My Fitbit by Sylvia Grant Last year, my eldest son gave me a Fitbit for Christmas. With this Fitbit, I am able to keep track, on a daily basis, of the number of steps I take, the number of kilometres I walk, the number of calories I burn, the number of minutes of sustained activity I achieve, and the number of hours of restful sleep I get. That is a lot of information in one small device. Not only do I get all this information about me, but so does my son. He has kindly set us up to share our information. We are Fitbit friends. I have heard of some people being involved in amicable, but serious, competitions with others. I’ve seen a husband and wife on my street taking extra walks so each could get more steps than the other. I decided early on to be interested in my son’s steps, but not to be competitive. My son lives in downtown Toronto and doesn’t drive a car. When he doesn’t take the TTC or a cab, he walks. Since I do have a car and don’t live within walking distance of anything, he accumulates far more steps in a week than I have ever been able to do. Competition aside, the Fitbit has proved to be the most entertaining form of fitness recording that I have ever experienced. Someone has determined that 10,000 steps a day are what we need to do to maintain our health. Unless you live in Toronto and don’t own a car, this is more of a challenge than what you might think. My first order of business on acquiring a Fitbit was to determine the number of steps I take in an ordinary day. I soon discovered that just going about my daily routine did not get me 10,000 steps. I had to do more. I needed to go on a 1-1/2 hour hike on a trail, or walk for an hour on the indoor track at Marden. Two strength training classes at The Evergreen Centre also helped achieve my goal. In addition to theses activities, shopping also helped increase the number of steps I took in a day. Since I acquired a Fitbit, going up and down the aisles in the grocery store or walking the length of Stone Road Mall has taken on new significance. If I forget to get something and have to backtrack in the grocery store or in the mall, I don’t sigh and regret the wasted time. Instead I feel enthusiastic because I know I will be getting more steps that day. If, at the end of the day, when I’m lounging on the chesterfield watching TV and I notice that I do not have my 10,000 steps for the day, I jump up during every commercial and begin pacing through my house. Often I can get up to 10,000 steps in this way unless I am watching TVO. TVO might be good for the mind - “It makes you think” - but without the commercial breaks, it might be detrimental to the body. The Fitbit also takes it upon itself to remind me to get up and walk if I have sat for too long. I usually get a reminder halfway through church service on Sunday. So far, I have held back and resisted the temptation to start pacing the aisles. Other people have confessed to me the unusual ways they manage to get their 10,000 daily steps. One woman confided that when she gets her laundry out of the dryer in her laundry room, she puts it away in her bedroom, one piece at a time. So, if she has twenty pairs of underwear in the dryer, she takes twenty trips from the laundry room to the dresser in her bedroom and back again to the laundry room. Only a Fitbit wearer would understand. Why do owners of Fitbits work so hard to get 10,000 daily steps? I think it is because the Fitbit operates on the same principle as a sticker reward system does for children. Aside from the health benefits, which might be elusive, I get a reward when I reach 10,000 daily steps. At this point, my Fitbit starts to vibrate, and on my small screen, I see two consecutive sets of fireworks. This is well worth the extra pacing I might have to do at the end of the day. Not only do I get daily feedback, but I also get a weekly report from Fitbit. It shows me my daily steps with a star for those days I made 10,000 steps. My best day gets the biggest star. I also get a weekly total and I am informed of how this week’s total compares to last week’s total. Am I 10,000 steps more than last week or am I 10,000 steps less? If it is less, I can vow to do better next week. Another way in which the Fitbit rewards wearers is by giving out badges for distances walked. Since I got my Fitbit, I have earned three badges. I have only walked on local trails and on an indoor track and not as much as my son, but I have earned a badge for walking the London underground, another for walking The Serengeti and a third badge for walking the length of Italy. I am so impressed and encouraged by this that I intend to walk even more as I eagerly await my next badge. I didn’t know I needed or wanted a Fitbit. It wasn’t on my Christmas wish list, but it has proved to be the most significant gift I got last year. The device has proved to be both informative and entertaining and I hope it is contributing to my health. 35 T S - A 2018
