Kenton Bowling Club
LAST week started off with a
bang! The finals of this year’s
Kenton Business League were a
real clash of the Titans.
The two strongest teams
throughout the competition –
Kenton Marina and Dias Insure –
went head-to-head to determine
the champions. After 12 ends
that were still at peels, it was
anybody’s match to win when
the 14, and final end
commenced. Unfortunately for
Dias Insure, the three shots
required was just too much and
the ladies of Kenton Marina were
crowned the champions.
In an effort to bring some
colour onto the greens, the
teams were encouraged to wear
their sponsor’s colours and to
display their advertising. To add
to the motivation, a parallel
competition was run for the
duration of the league to find the
most-appropriately dressed
team. Most teams entered into
the spirit of it and company
banners, bright T-shirts and
other paraphernalia added to the
colourful spectacle on the
greens.
The final winners were once
again Kenton Marina who added
a dash of femininity to their
sporting gear by wearing flowers
in their hair.
Overall, the league was a great
success and the record 16 teams
all vowed to return next year. An
added bonus was that the club
has welcomed six new social
members. Some of the new
members are also keen to take
up bowling as a sport and will
soon convert to full members.
The rain put paid to the
monthly Friday Personal Trust
Trips and steak evening.
Although the rain had stopped
by 2pm, the greens were too
soaked to allow play. Personal
Tr u st ’s Mark Gibbs and Carl
Vermeulen had travelled all the
way to join us for the afternoon
and evening. They enjoyed
meeting our members during the
social later that evening. We will
use the prize money set aside for
the trips for another occasion.
The attendance draw jackpot
is on the rise again! As a result
of Ann Crewe-Brown forfeiting
the R600 for not being present
... what’s happening
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: The winners of the Kenton Business League, from left, Colleen Crossland, Lynn West, Mo Marsay, Trish
Barwick and Sheila Walker. Linda Walker was absent
when her name was drawn,
Fr i d ay ’s draw will be for R700.
Remember, if you’re not there,
your wallet will stay bare!
On Saturday two of our teams
travelled to Grahamstown to
participate in the Albany GBS.
West y’s Personal Trust Team
(Rodney Austin, Carl Vermeulen
and Pippa Swift) managed a
credible fourth place. Brian
Aldag’s team finished further
down the field.
The first rounds of the Eastern
Areas Men’s (EA) 1st and 2nd
Leagues were held at our club
last Sunday. Thirty-two teams
took to the greens in an attempt
to obtain a good start to the
League season. Albany, the
defending champions certainly
succeeded and are leading both
the 1st and 2nd Leagues. Our 1st
League side started off
tentatively losing both games in
the morning. Their recovery in
the afternoon was not sufficient
to lift them off the bottom rung
of the ladder. Our 2nd League
side fared much better by
winning one game in the
morning and narrowly losing one
game in the afternoon. They
currently hold second position
behind Albany.
Events (March 22-29): 24 - EA
Mixed Pairs, 25 - EA Mixed Pairs.
Duties (March 26-31): Bar - The
Rules, Tabs - Lottie Brink.
Kowie Bowling Club
What happened on Sunday can
only be described as “The Great
Escape”.
Playing against Grahamstown
in the first round of the EA Men's
“A” league our two teams pulled
off a coup when contemplating a
rather ignominious defeat. In the
morning honours were even.
Jacques Krige's team won and
Steven Minnaar’s team lost by
enough for us to concede the
bonus point.
In the afternoon, Jacques was
13-5 up only to fritter it away to a
17-16 deficit close to the 18th
end. Steven, meanwhile, had
steadily conceded points to be
10 shots down midway in the
game. Both rallied to be just on
the positive side playing the last.
Steve sealed it by trailing the
jack for a 4 with his last bowl
while Jacques saw the
opposition lying 5 and game
when he had to play. Delivering
probably the best shot of the day
he got second shot and game.
Our “B” league teams, playing
against Kenton, ended in the
middle with Eric Kent's team
winning both and Mike
Tomlinson's team losing both.
Tuesday's Spar voucher
competition yielded mixed
results. Many of the games were
separated by only one point but
then Keith Kolesky, Brian Burger,
and Des Kahn ran riot towards
the end of their game and ended
with an obscene 8 plus 17.
On Wednesday we welcomed
the EP Greens Committee on
their annual visit to inspect our
greens. It has been heavy
weather for our greens recently
so they could probably have
been excused if they showed
some wear. The men's senior
singles was a story of two
phases with Mike Tomlinson
initially building up a substantial
lead against Jacques Krige and
then the rain came and Jacque
not only came abreast of Mike
but continued to pull away and
win the Men's Senior Singles –
well done Jacques.
The Ladies’ Singles appears to
be jinxed by the weather which
also put paid to the Night Bowls
on Friday.
In the 1990s we had Boet and
Swaer to entertain us with their
verbal exchanges. Now, 20 years
later we have Mutt and Jeff at
the club, These two gentlemen
are our “Mr Fix-its” and are often
seen inside and outside the
clubhouse fixing things. Their
more recent efforts being putting
shade-shelters over some of our
benches – sincerely appreciated
by the members. It is, however,
the discourse between them
which is worthy of anything said
by “Boet and Swaer”.
When called upon to plan a
job this contemplative phase
might be very protracted – akin
to a “volkskongres – a potpourri
of genuine information and
nonsense.
As the work goes on, we are
treated to a series of anecdotes
of past experiences going back
many years and on completion
we would listen to advice
reminiscent of Polonius' “c h at ”
with Laertes (Hamlet). To Bob
Ford and Ronnie Smith, our
sincere thanks for what you are
doing for the club and please
provide seats for when you do
the next benches so that more
members can hear these little
verbal gems.
With four teams playing in the
Albany GBS our field on
Saturday was surprisingly large.
Jonine MacFarlane, Bugs Wilmot
and Des Kahn will be enjoying a
meal at Ocean Basket.
Duties for next week, March
26: Tony Brown – Rolling, Stan
Richter and Dave Tyrell –
Marking, Lynn Kolesky – Ta b s ,
Pick n Pay Night Bowls Competition
LAST Friday was
supposed to be round
four of the Night Bowls
Tournament but due to
weather conditions and
50mm of rain on
Thursday night, the
organisers had to call off
the bowls.
The weather did clear
on Friday afternoon but
the greens were very wet
and the greenkeeper
would not allow play.
The proposal is to play
a double header
tomorrow if all teams
agree to it.
The idea is to start a
little earlier and play two
rounds of shortened
games in the evening.
The start time is
5.30pm. Round four will
be a 10-end game, then
there will be a break for
30 minutes, after which
they will play round five,
another 10-end game.
The scoring system
will be the same as the
15-end games.
“All teams and
businesses need to be in
agreement if we play
this system.
This would help us to
finish the tournament
before May [the middle
of winter], providing
there are no more
weather delays,”
convenor Mike
Tomlinson said.
CROQUET
CORNER
IN the Radue-sponsored tournament, Ellen
Wolmarans came first with +12, followed
by Phyl Russell with +11 and third was Zola
Nodongwe with +9.
The consolation prize was awarded to
Tersia Wienand. We still need more
donations for the prize hampers.
Lastly, Colin Barnard celebrates a
birthday on the 28th. Have a good one,
Colin.
