BITS AND BOBS CHARITY BOX: DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY SCREENINGS Accessibility is something that the Depot take seriously, in terms of wheelchair access, Audio Description headsets available (AD) for the visually impaired, and subtitled screenings for those with hearing impairments. They are also putting on a series of ‘relaxed, enhanced dementia-friendly’ screenings too – which are also ‘friendly’ for people on the autistic spectrum and those with learning disabilities and their carers. The host is Suzy Harvey, who has worked with people with dementia for many years, and organised the successful Musical Matinee Club at the De La Warr Pavilion, on which the Depot series is based. She tells us: “We’re screening musicals, because they are often extremely playful, with many opportunities to sing and dance along. We also use props and costumes to provide a great way for us all to stay engaged in the film in our own way. This singing, dancing and participation all combine to create more possibilities for connection, laughter and reminiscence.” To create a dementia-friendly environment, the cinema and restaurant will have extra, large signage and trained staff. In the auditorium, the house lights will be up, the sound down, and it’s fine for members of the audience to walk around, dance and sing – in fact it’s actively encouraged.
