BUSINESS NEWS Photos by Alex Leith First up a couple of happy birthdays. We were in very good company celebrating the 30th birthday of The Runaway café, on Platform 2 of the railway station, on Thursday morning, April 12th. The Runaway has had a bit of a rollercoaster last decade, but thankfully is still going strong, and among those sipping early morning champers and scoffing beautifully prepared snacks were former MP Norman Baker, Mayor Michael Chartier and Mayor Elect Janet Baah. Congratulations to Jacqueline Elsey and all her staff. And a happy 10th birthday to the-stitchery, the go-to place in the Riverside ‘for all your haberdashery, fabric and knitting needs’. After a lot of work by Green councillor Jo Carter, the Turkish Baths were recently earmarked for community use, rather than becoming (yet) another restaurant, and it’s going to be turned into ‘The Unity Centre’, an ‘inclusive holistic community centre’ run by Lewes resident Sevanti Jo Atwood, who currently administers a yoga studio on the Lewes Road in Brighton. The centre will be a CIC, and as well as offering yoga classes in the main (22-mat) studio, it will have a couple of treatment rooms (for acupuncture and other holistic treatments), facilities for artists and performers, a vegetarian café, a shop and gallery space, plus – going back to its roots - a sauna and possibly a floatation tank. The space offers easy access for the disabled, aiming to be ‘an inclusive project… insuring that those from vulnerable and marginalised groups are equally welcomed and supported’. Jo is looking for crowdfunding to help her get it up and running (see being-inunity.com, campaign runs till June 18th). And now for the bad news. The national chain Carpetright have announced the forthcoming closure of 92 of their 416 UK stores, and sadly the Lewes branch, on Brooks Road, is one of those earmarked for the chop. An employee at the store informed us that they will continue trading for six months. And if you need the services of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, their little office on North Court in Cliffe is no longer operating. The service has moved to Southover House on Southover Street, opening on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 9.30am-3pm. The new number to contact, a sign in the window told us, was 03444 111444. They continue to offer telephone advice Mon-Fri (9.30am-4pm) and you can also consult them via e-mail (eastsussexcab.co.uk). Finally, those looking to add a little ‘je-ne-saisquoi’ to their weekend revelry will be pleased to know that Café du Jardin, opposite the Dorset in Cliffe, are now open till 11pm Friday and Saturday, serving cocktails. And we’ll drink to that. STOP PRESS! Just before going to the printers we learnt that Stevie and Jamie Freeman are handing the reins of the Union Music Store to Del Day and Danny Wilson, two Lewes musos who run the Maiden Voyage label.
