ART & ABOUT
In town this month
Simone Riley is the featured artist at Chalk
Gallery from the 21st. You might recall her distinctive
personal style from the beautiful cover
she created for us in April 2017. Made by taking
an original photograph, or combining elements
from several images, her photomontages are built
up from her library of photographed textures,
creating layers and subtle colours that end up
more fine art than photograph. Until the 10th of
June. [simoneriley.co.uk]
In Her Shoes, an
exhibition by experimental
glass artist
Alison Allum, is at
Martyrs’ Gallery
from Saturday the
5th (until the 25th).
Recently shown at
the V&A, Alison
exploits the inherent
qualities of glass – ‘beauty and fragility
versus tensile strength and the potential
for danger’ – to explore the contradictory
experiences of modern womanhood. Gallery
open 12 noon–5pm, Thurs–Sun.
Marco Crivello
Father and son Marco and
Jacob Crivello present Continuum
at Keizer Frames
Gallery in Malling Street,
from the 19th. Jacob will show
his poetic, sculpted landscapes
in bell jars and wall-mounted
microworlds growing within
vintage tobacco tins. Alongside,
Marco presents a final series
of seascapes, as well as a wide
range of new work that continues
to explore themes of improvisation,
materiality and process. The exhibition continues
until the 3rd of June. (Private View, Saturday 19th, 2-5pm.)
