SHOES ON NOW: CONNECT 4, ANYONE?
Having been a parent for
almost 13 years now I’ve experienced
several fads or fashions
in toys. I’m not the only one to
have weathered the Skylanders’
era, sat through the loom band
period and raised my eyebrows
as the bug hotel with all its accessories
was installed in our boys’ bedroom. But
recently I’ve been thinking how three games seem
to have missed the obsolescence memo and are as
popular today as they ever were. Here’s a timeless
trio never to relegate to the loft.
Cluedo - This is a game for the strategists out
there, the double bluffers and the super sleuths.
I’m too distracted to play most times, my brain
too full of ‘did I wash their uniform?’ to have
any space to work out if Ms Blue knocked off Mr
Hatchett in the library with
a baguette, or something like
that.
Connect 4 - There’s nothing
as satisfying for a parent as
out-strategizing your child at
this game. I can feel my heart
pumping full of adrenalin when
I realise my child has not noticed how near I am
to my row of four.
Ludo - Sometimes I’m tired. Dog tired. Yet
never too tired for Ludo, which requires almost
no brain power. For a parent exhausted from
work, children and life, this is a game you can
play almost with your eyes closed. Plus, there’s
something about the orderliness of the board
in contrast to the chaos of real life, that I find
strangely appealing. Jacky Adams
