Question:
Is now a good time to plant Tomatoes?
November is a great time
Answer: to plant tomatoes outside,
as the weather is more
settled now. Prepare the ground 2 to 3 weeks before
planting. Dig in good compost and remove any
weeds. While you are there, check that the soil is
not too dry. The best site to grow tomatoes is one
that has plenty of sun, shelter from cold winds,
and access to a good water supply (but has good
drainage too). Tomatoes are gross feeders, meaning
they will need a lot of nutrients through the growing
season. At planting time, incorporate fertilisers such
as Intelligro Tomato Fertiliser or Nitrophoska. Hold
on to the fertiliser, you will need this through the
season.
Place the supporting stakes in the ground before planting, and tie the stems to the
stakes. Once rapid growth has started they must not get stressed so need to have
regular watering and be tied to the stake to keep the stems straight. Laterals must be
removed as soon as they are able to be handled to encourage flower development.
Fertilising Tomatoes
In a garden bed - Apply 100 grams per square metre of Intelligro
Tomato Fertiliser every 4 weeks during the growing season
(spring and summer). Mix well and water after application.
In a pot or container - We would recommend using Intelligro
Topdressing Fertiliser for tomatoes that are in some form of pot
or container. Apply 1-2 grams per litre of pot size, every 4-6
weeks during the key growth periods of spring and summer.
Water well after application.
