7. How do I protect myself from identity theft? The
RCMP has many tips for preventing identity theft including
that you should be wary of unsolicited e-mails,
telephone calls or mail attempting to extract personal
or financial information from you. You should limit the
identity documents you carry in your wallet. You
should check your credit reports, bank and credit card
statements and report any irregularities promptly. You
should swipe your debit or credit card yourself and not
allow a cashier to do it for you. You should always
shield your personal identification number when using
an ATM or a PIN pad. You should shred personal and
financial documents before putting them in the garbage.
For more tips, visit the RCMP at www.rcmpgrc.gc.ca/scams-fraudes/id-theft-vol-eng.htm.
8. Can my landlord evict me in the winter? Yes, tenants
can be evicted in the winter. However, landlords
can only evict for reasons outlined in the Residential
Tenancies Act (i.e., arrears). Landlords must provide
the proper notice of termination. Tenants have the right
to fight the eviction through a hearing at the Landlord
and Tenant Board. If you have questions about your
tenancy, contact the Legal Clinic.
Can I get help with the cost of my electricity bill?
Yes! The Electricity Support Program (OESP) assists
those in lower-income homes. If you are a customer of
an electricity utility, the OESP will reduce the cost of
your household electricity by applying a monthly credit
directly to your bill. The credit amount will depend on
how many people live in your home and your combined
household income. For information, please contact
the OESP at https://ontarioelectricitysupport.ca/.
Tenancies Act? Yes! A care home is a place you
rent, where you get health care services, attendant care,
or help with daily living. If you live in a care home,
you are a tenant and have legal rights. If you have
questions about your tenancy, contact the Legal Clinic.
Rent-geared-to-income housing is available through
the County of Wellington’s Housing Services, including
apartment buildings catering to senior tenants. The
County also has formal service agreements with a number
of Retirement Homes in the area, where tenants can
receive housing along with related supports. If you disagree
with a decision made by Housing Service, you
can request a review within 10 days and can contact the
Legal Clinic for assistance with the review. To apply
