CLOUDS
by Ross Coulter
I know, without doubt, from
whence they come,
Garnered from earthly waters below,
Beads of moisture gathered in proliferate sum
Parading onward surely but slow.
White and fluffy in odd shapes as they pass me by,
Journeying relentlessly across the sky,
But there’s a question unanswered, something I’d
like to know,
After they’ve passed, where do they go?
How far have they travelled since they were made?
Will they gather and darken somewhere down the
road
And with thunder and lightning drop their watery
load?
Surely it will happen and the skies will clear
As the clouds seen earlier disappear.
THE MAGIC OF NATURE
by Julie Jane Dowdle
An eagerly anticipated rain
Produces a surge in growth
In the garden…
The likes of which
Is astounding.
A small green plant
Suddenly becomes a clump…
Tiny flower buds
Make an appearance
As if by magic.
Tree branches bend and sway
Seemingly encumbered
By a substantial, unexpected
Growth spurt.
Flower heads are fuller…
Their colours deeper…richer,
Leaves wider…greener,
And stems of vines
Reaching high above
The fence tops.
Bare spots in the lawn
Are indiscernible
Among the taller…lusher blades
Of wavy, darker green grass.
Colours, overall, appear bolder
And more substantial…
The hues more noticeable
Before the sun again beats down,
Draining the lush new growth
Of such a fabulous display.
We all love the sunshine…
There’s no doubt about
It’s instilling feelings in us
Of complete wellbeing,
And enabling the flora
To benefit from
Those glorious golden rays.
But, truly, there’s nothing
Like the magnificent spectacle
Of a thriving garden
After a nurturing rainfall.
We meet at the orange-roofed pavilion in Riverside Park
every Thursday morning, rain or shine. We assemble at
9:30 a.m. for registering, collection of fees and we depart
at 10 a.m. sharp. All walkers must be current members of
memberships are available from the Evergreen Centre.
Walkers may join the Walking Club any time during the
year for a fee of $10 per year. It is a friendly group and
we are always glad to see new members.
