Mills on the Service of Remembrance due to take 

place on 23rd June in honour to those who have 

made sacrifices in defence of their country. 

We also feature a write up from the Greater 

Manchester Heywood Police Force on their 

recent successful “Giving Back” event on page 

40. The Giving Back scheme allows Greater 

Manchester Police to use money seized from 

criminals to help their local community and tackle 

the issues that matter most to you. £20,000 has 

been put back into the community to help prevent 

anti social behaviour.

Heywood 1940’s Day 

Set to be another Amazing Day 

Heywood 1940’s Day is back for another year, in fact this will be our 7th year!! 

Kicking off on Friday 22nd June and leading on to a full day of events and 

displays on Saturday 23rd June 2018. 

As usual a fun packed day is being organised, with something for everyone and for the whole 

family to enjoy. This year kicks off on the Friday Night at the Heywood Civic Centre Jive Night. 

Starting at 7:30pm until midnight, the evening is a jive spectacular featuring music from The Swing 

Commanders and compared by the fantastic GI Jive. Only £15 per person ticket are available now 

on 01706 368130. 

Saturday morning will see an array of military vehicles arriving for 10am including a full replica 

Hurricane and Messerschmitt 109, military tanks courtesy of Heywood Tanks, Steam Engines, 

military displays from most nations, vehicles and dancing should you fancy a quick jive around the 

dance floor, Cotton Town Hot Club will be back by popular demand. 

Wave the Evacuees off from the East Lancashire Railway Heywood Station at 10.40am and their 

return from the country (well Ramsbottom!) early afternoon time for our Jo Cox Vintage Street Party! 

At Morrison’s Gap you can enjoy the wonderful sounds of the brass band, with Littleborough Brass 

Band 2-4pm. Across the road on Mission St, we’re hosting our 2nd Jo Cox Street Party, with two 

parties, one at 1pm for all the Evacuees coming home from the country and the second at 3pm 

where everyone in Vintage wear is invited for sandwiches, cake and jelly! 

At noon in the Heywood Memorial Gardens, there 

will be a short Service of Remembrance to 

commemorate the centenary of World War 1 and 

all who served in the Forgotten Wars. 

Don’t forget to line the streets for the Town’s Official 

Armed Forces Day Parade, leaving The Heywood 

Pub at 13.00 hours prompt. Leading with the official 

standards, Veterans and Cadets alike will be 

marching along with the Manchester Army Cadet 

Brass Band and Littleborough Brass Band around 

the town and returning to The Heywood Pub. Look 

out for a special balloon display in the parade 

from Blue Rose Gifts.

Stalls and children activities including a miniature steam railway and carousel will be outside the 

Civic Centre. Whilst across the road at St Luke’s, their NAAFI is open 12pm-5pm and the usual 

1940s Day concert kicking off at 12:30pm with Marina Mae and the rest leading on from 1:30pm 

after the parade. With acts including Kats Dance, VOICE and music, instruments and acting from 

the era with talent from our own town, it’s a truly entertaining show for all the family, pick a deck 

chair on the lawn of St Luke’s. 

Look up in the sky at 1:26pm for a flypast from Britain of Memorial Flight, as their Spitfire flies 

over the town. 

Experience the Air Raid shelters over at Mike Goldrick Window Blinds, inside Tilly’s Tea Room as 

they perform hourly Air Raids, with their Home Guard and unexploded bomb display open all day 

and music and dance from The Backstep Boogie Club from 11am. You can easily join in and follow 

as Trina talks everyone through the steps for beginners! 

Longford Street car park and Heywood Magic Market have children fairground rides. The Market 

also have a singer inside, bouncy castles, vintage car displays and a Nerf Gun Range. You can 

jump on the FREE Vintage Bus at the Market and have a ride around the town too. There will be 

stops around the town so please look out for the bus route on the day. 

Listen out for Patelvis during the afternoon at Jazba and Venus is opens for refreshments. 

If dance is your thing, then join Lille de Carlo singing at the annual St James’s Tea Dance, tickets 

can be bought it advance - £5 each including refreshments, call Janet on 01706 620010. 

To round the day off wave off the military vehicles as they convoy around the town from 4:30pm.

From The Archives 

Cinemas of Rochdale 

By the end of the 19th century 

experiments were taking place in America 

and by Friese-Green in Britain in the hope 

of projecting moving images onto a screen. 

The first cinema to appear in the UK was 

in Regent Street, London in the mid 1890’s 

with hand-cranked projectors showing 

silent scenes from everyday life ten times 

a day. Rochdale was not too far behind 

with six cinemas opening before 1920 and 

more in the following decades. 

Chronologically, Rochdale’s cinemas 

opened across the first three decades 

of the 20th century. 

The Hippodrome 

In 1903 the Hippodrome, owned by Messrs 

Smith, Lee and Hargreaves showed simple 

animated pictures under the Pringles name 

although in 1905 it was also hosting variety 

acts, Grace Stansfield (Gracie Fields) winning a 

singing competition on-stage there in that year. 

The Empire 

Built in 1904 to reflect the gothic style of the 

Town Hall, this cinema was linked with the 

Hippodrome in its early days and became 

Pringle’s Picture Palace. It had a music hallstyled 

horseshoe balcony (Music Hall 

continuing there until 1910) but this, along with 

the proscenium, was changed in 1929 and the 

orchestra pit taken out to suit the re-named Empire 

De Luxe Cinema rather than theatre. 

As part of the decline of cinema nationally in the 

1950’s, the showing of films was terminated and 

it became a Bingo Hall, then in 1995 a nightclub 

with the cinema balcony bricked-up. 

The Palace 

The Palace was located in George Street off 

Drake Street and opened in 1911. By 1922 The 

Palace had been taken over by the Northern 

Cinemas chain and in the 1930’s re-named the 

Palace Tudor Super Cinema. In turn it became 

part of the Essoldo chain in the 1950’s. Initially 

closed in 1968 it was later used to screen 

Bollywood films and on final closure as a 

cinema in 1981 it was converted into ‘Scene 

One’ night club which was partly destroyed by 

fire and then re-built as the ‘Xanadu’ night club 

which closed in 2002 after which the building 

was demolished. 

The Coliseum Picture Theatre 

The Coliseum Picture Theatre was built in 1911 

at the corner of the High Level and Oldham 

Road next door to the then popular Palace 

Roller Skating rink. In the 1930’s ‘The Colli’ 

was equipped with an expensive RCA sound 

system but after many years of entertainment it 

closed in the early 1950’s and the building taken 

over initially by the Ford Motor garage but later 

demolished. 

The Pavilion 

The Pavillion opened in 1912 as the Pavilion 

Picture Palace on St Mary’s Gate at the junction 

of Spotland and Bury Road it initially showed 

silent films but was host to the town’s first 

‘talkie’ in 1929. The cinema closed its doors 

in 1963. 

The Ceylon Picture Hall 

This old cinema which opened in 1914 stood 

at the corner of Littlewood Street backing off 

Yorkshire Street and was a converted 

warehouse. It had a snooker hall upstairs and 

though it was re-furbished and re-named in the

1920’s as Ceylon Cinema De Luxe, by the end 

of the war it had reverted to being the Ceylon 

Cinema. Its last showing was ‘Flame of the 

Islands’ with Yvonne de Carlo in 1956 after 

which it stood unused for many years before 

being demolished. 

The Princess 

The Princess in Castleton was another early 

picture house. Opened in 1914 it stood next door 

to The Ideal Cinema (1931) and at one time had 

the same telephone number. Initially owned by 

A E Millward, ownership transferred to 

E Woodall by the 1940’s. Reversing the usual 

transfer of use, the cinema in 1951 was acquired 

by the Catholic Church and became St Gabriel 

and the Angels with a new presbytery built 

alongside it in 1953. The Ideal next door was 

eventually taken over by a sheet metal company. 

The Kings 

The Kings cinema, showing films from 1922, 

was located near to Lower Place. It had an 

impressive 32 feet wide screen area 

proscenium and was equipped with a Western 

Electric sound system. The cinema closed in 

1969, initially becoming an Asian social centre 

and then a Bingo club, closing in 2013 as such. 

The Victory 

The Victory stood at the corner of Milkstone 

Road at Station Approach. Opened in 1925, it 

was early in promoting ‘talkies,’ showing Al 

Jolson’s ‘The Singing Fool’ in 1929. As a 

cinema it closed its doors in the late 1950’s after 

which the building was taken over by retail 

businesses. 

Organisation. Towards its closure, in November 

1975, it was reported that youths threw 

fireworks inside the cinema, setting fire to 

the stage curtains and part of the screen. The 

cinema closed soon after this event (it was due 

to close anyway) and never re-opened. The 

building was demolished in the mid 1980’s. 

The Regalon 

The Butts was the last cinema to be built in the 

town centre in 1938. The art deco style building 

was designed by the architect Leslie C Norton to 

hold 1901 seats, two thirds in the stalls and one 

third in the balcony. It was re-named the ABC 

in 1962 and closed for three months in 1978 as 

it was converted into a three-screen cinema. It 

became the Cannon in 1986 and closed as a 

cinema in 1992 first becoming a Bingo Hall and 

then operating as The Regal Moon from 1997. 

The 1960’s witnessed a dramatic drop in cinema 

attendancepartly due to popular ownership of 

TV sets as home entertainment. Video rentals 

in the 1970’s and latterly DVD sales further 

marginalised cinema-going although the rise of 

the multiplex has, to some extent reversed this 

trend. Even so, the era of going to the pictures 

with a great choice of double-header films will 

be remembered with fondness by many in 

the town.

The Rialto 

The Rialto (1928), later re-named The Odeon, 

was initially The Rialto Super Cinema with 

Grace Fields present at its opening. It had an 

impressive outer façade with cream faience 

tiling, its interior also stunning with marble 

floors, lined walls with painted panels of 

English scenes (one of Healey Dell). There was 

a café attached to the cinema decorated with 

scenes of the Rialto bridge in Venice. In 1955 

‘the Ri’ was equipped with Cinemascope and 

in 1959 re-named The Odeon under the Rank

Heywood Greater Manchester Police Give Back 

to the Local Community 

On 12th May your local police force held their first “Giving Back” event at the Heywood Civic Centre. 

The Giving Back scheme allows Greater Manchester Police to use money seized from criminals to help their 

local community and tackle the issues that matter most to you. 

Heywood GMP was given an amount of £10,000 from the proceeds of crime. Local residents were asked 

to come up with initiatives to help reduce anti social behaviour in the 

town and given the opportunity to then submit an application form 

to apply for funding to help this happen. The applicants were then 

selected by a panel of judges which included our Heywood Police 

Inspector Paul Wood and two other community champions, 

Sandra Tricket and Barney Greenhouse. 

Fifteen successful applicants were then chosen and given the 

opportunity on the day of the event to place a “Dragons Den” style bid 

for the amount of money they needed for their project. The conditions 

of the funding are to reduce anti social behaviour and to be ongoing, 

funded by GMP for the first 12 months. 

Before the event we were match funded by Rochdale Council by 

another £10,000 which took our total to £20,000, with this we were 

able to help more projects on the day. The final vote was made by 

the public after the bids had been placed and six winners were then 

chosen from the final fifteen applicants.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE 23rd JUNE 2018 

HEYWOOD 1940’s DAY ARMED FORCES 

Sadly, during my period in Service, I attended the funerals of several friends and 

colleagues who were killed or died while serving abroad in Aden, Germany, Kenya and 

Malaya. In those days they were laid to rest in the country in which they died. 

Thankfully the system changed in the Falklands War and relatives were given a choice 

of their loved ones being buried where they died or being repatriated. I welcomed that 

change as there is nothing sadder than widows, parents or children being unable to 

afford to visit the grave of their family member. 

With this in mind I decided that there ought to be a place where relatives of people 

killed in the so called ‘Forgotten Wars’ could come to commemorate the lives of their 

people so I began arranging a local Service of Remembrance and also lobbied strongly 

for a Wall of Remembrance in Heywood. 

It took many years for the Council to finally agree to implement the idea of the Wall but 

eventually the people of Heywood had a focal point where they could visit to remember 

their loved ones and attend the Parades & Services designed specifically for them. 

The Services still continue and are currently a joint initiative between Lancashire 

Veterans Association and Aden Veterans Association.
