THE FLUSH IS COMING FLUSHING FROM PAGE 1 Fixing the city’s water problems and increasing school security are two key initiatives on Peabody’s proposed $171 million budget for fiscal year 2019. The Peabody Finance Committee combed through the budget proposal during a meeting on June 7. The Fiscal 2019 Operating Budget totals $171,286,426, an increase of $6.8 million, or 4.1 percent, over the current year. That increase will be split between $2.4 million in salary increases, $2.2 million in Massachusetts Water Resource Interior & Exterior Finished Carpentry. Custom made Cabinets. New Decks. Overall, total revenues are up from the fiscal 2018, including $107.4 million in property taxes, $34.4 million local revenues, $27.9 million in state aid, and $4.6 million in available revenues from dedicated funds. Water and sewer rates are expected to increase by $260,000, according to the proposed budget. Education spending increases by $1.9 million in the proposed budget. Strong home sales continues to buoy the city’s revenues, according to Bettencourt. Homes sold in Peabody spent fewer days on the market than any other community in the state. The average amount of time homes stay on the market is 17 days.

Wakefield Elks give out 88 scholarships The Wakefield Lodge of Elks #1276 is happy to announce that this year there were 88 scholarships, totaling $78,700 awarded to students from the Wakefield Lodge jurisdiction. Marc Alperen, a 2018 Reading High School graduate, and Derek Blanchard, a Peabody resident and a 2018 graduate of Malden Catholic High School, were each awarded two Wakefield Lodge Member Elk Scholarships. Scholarships are given in memory of past Wakefield Lodge members. The lodge also had five students who were state finalists for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship. Along with these awards there were 75 students from the Wakefield Lodge jurisdiction who received Massachusetts Elks Scholarship, Inc. Major Project awards, totaling $61,900. Congratulations to all the recipients and best of luck next year. Thanks to more than 1700 people who live at Brooksby Village, 60 students from the North Shore will receive the $8,000 Brooksby Village Student Scholarship. "We have awarded scholarships to over 450 students since the program started in 2002 and this was our largest class ever with 60 students," said Elizabeth Macomber, philanthropy manager, Brooksby Village. "The students become eligible for the Brooksby Village Scholarship by completing 1000 hours of work here over a consecutive two year period. The students and the residents build strong bonds of friendship. They enjoy their conversations, daily interactions and learning from each other.
