“When we were formed,
we sat around and thought
why does this have to stop
at a running club and one
running event?”
Mr Wilson felt Selwyn
was easily ignored in
terms of sport at the time.
His role as chief executive
has increased from one
day a week to a full-time
way of life.
“One day became two
and then three and, all of
a sudden, I didn’t need the
casual teaching jobs.
“Each time I reached
capacity came with me
increasing my hours.”
As a charitable trust,
funding comes from a
wide range of sources,
including the Rata Foundation,
district council,
NZCT, Kiwisport Partnership
Fund through Sport
Canterbury, invested
schools in the activator
programme, event revenue
and other gaming trusts.
Funding ids used to build
up and restore equipment.
The trust runs activities
suited to the district like
the Koru Games, which
sees 2000 students from
around the South Island

“Koru Games is great
for kids in year 7 and 8
because it limits the cost
of kids at that age going to
tournaments,” Mr Wilson
said.
“It’s about individual
skill development within a
team environment. We’re
also trying to encourage
that tournament sport
trips aren’t just about
the sport; they’re about
the volunteers, officials,
coaching and having fun
with your friends.”
