also stated that the commercial
passenger vehicles in Victoria must
offer a safe form of transport for all
Victorians.
Perhaps a new government and
head of the regulatory industry body
will see fit to make the fitment of
safety cameras, annual roadworthy
checks and mandatory insurance
for all commercial passenger
vehicles a priority to meet the
proper safety standards for this very
necessary part of Victoria’s public
transport system.
In an interview on 3AW with Neil
Mitchell, Mr Kennett said, “I’m not
opposed to ride sharing at all. I
agree that the government had to
regulate the ride sharing industry
but they could have allowed the
licences to stand. Where a taxi/
hire car licence holder was not
able to be competitive the licence
value would have dropped to the
point of disappearing - because
they themselves were not able to
compete and not able to use new
technology.”
Mr Kennett went on to say, “What
Jacinta Allan has done has cost the
taxpayer tens of millions of dollars
while destroying many of the 3000
operators.”
But, at this stage, there has been no
mention of further compensation
for the taxi and hire car licence plate
holders. No indication that a Liberal
Nationals government would look at
reviewing the compensation made
for the revocation of licences –
effectively cancellation of licences
- that has caused the destruction of
wealth for many within the taxi and
hire car industry.
CPVAA President, Rod Barton said,
“We look forward to the Liberal
Nationals viewpoint on revisiting the
inadequate compensation licence
holders have received.”
“Also we are interested to know how
they will reinstate some stability to
the families and businesses that
have suffered greatly due to the
poor handling of the introduction
of ride-sharing to Victoria,” he
continued”.
In the 1990s Mr Kennett got the taxi
industry back on track – with standout
yellow vehicles, uniformed
drivers, driver/operator agreements,
knowledge of Melbourne and
English language assessments also
undertaken.
He brought pride back to the taxi
and hire car industry – pride to the
drivers, owners and operators –
pride and faith of the public too.
Mr Kennett has always and still
currently believes that the industry’s
drivers are the best ambassadors
we have for this city and this state.
Therefore if the public respects
them and enables them to earn a
reasonable living they will be the
best promoters of Melbourne and
Victoria.
On 3AW Mr Kennett said “I can’t
fix what has happened, but I can
review what has happened. I
want to rebuild the credibility of
the industry. I want people to
understand that this is a terribly
important part of Victorian life. And
without a taxi, hire car, ride share
industry of note, we are all going to
be disadvantaged,” he continued.
