MS THURGAU RHÔNE
Lyon
Day 1: London – Lyon
We travel to Lyon and board our ship for a relaxing
evening, as we begin cruising along the Saône river
towards Mâcon.
Day 2: Mâcon
Today you have the option of joining three different
excursions which explore the beautiful region of
Burgundy. The first visits Cluny Abbey, which was
once the seat of the greatest medieval monastic
order in the west. Next you can join a walking tour
of Mâcon and enjoy the distinctly Mediterranean
feel of this little town with its colourful buildings.
You can then end the day with a scenic tour along
the Beaujolais wine route, which is lined with
endless rows of vineyards and estates.
Day 3: Chalon-sur-Saône
Wake up in Chalon-sur-Saône in the middle of wine
country and join an optional walking tour which
reveals the highlights of this lively market town. You
can then join another optional excursion visiting the
town of Beaune, one of the best places in France to
taste wine. We return to our ship in Tournus, where
you can join an optional stroll through the town.
Day 4: Lyon – Vienne
We cruise back to Lyon where you can join an
optional city tour to see the main sights of this
beautiful destination. Around midday we join the
Rhône river and cruise to Vienne, one of the oldest
cities in the Rhône-Alpes region, where you can join
an optional walk through the town centre. Later in
the day we continue along the Rhône on our way
to Avignon.
Viviers
Day 5: Avignon
Enjoy a relaxing morning onboard our ship before
we reach Avignon. This graceful city is best known
for the Palais des Papes, the largest gothic palace
in the world where Pope Clement V took up
permanent residence in the 14th century. The city
walls are accessed by one of seven doors, which
lead you into a beautiful web of papal architecture,
charming streets and attractive courtyards. You can
spend your time here at leisure or join an optional
city tour to ensure you miss none of the highlights.
Day 6: Avignon
Today you can join an optional excursion which
takes you by coach through the vast and beautiful
Camargue nature reserve in search of the iconic
wildlife, which includes white horses, black bulls and
pink flamingos. After lunch you can join another
optional excursion which takes you around Arles.
This quaint little city is widely regarded as the heart
of Provence and was where Vincent van Gogh
produced some of his most famous paintings. Later
in the day we continue cruising towards Viviers.
Day 7: Viviers – Le Pouzin
We reach the town of Viviers where you can join an
optional excursion to see the spectacular Ardèche
gorges, hailed as the Grand Canyon of Europe
with cliffs towering up to 1000 feet above the
meandering river. The most striking feature is the
Pont d’Arc, a natural stone arch standing over 200
feet high with a span of 110 feet. We return to our
ship in Le Pouzin, where the afternoon is free to
relax onboard as we cruise back to Lyon.
Day 8: Lyon – London
After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts and set
