Tornado
DURATION
Two lessons
TASK
Draw and colour a tornado scene.
Materials
✓✓ A3 sheet light blue card
✓✓ oil pastels
LESSON 1
1. Use purple oil pastel to lightly sketch
some hills in the background.
2. Draw a large barn on the bottom half of
the page, either on the left- or righthand
side.
3. Draw a field behind and in front of the
barn.
4. Use grey oil pastel to draw the tornado
shape, starting in large oval shapes
at the top of the page, progressively
getting smaller as the tornado reaches
the ground.
5. To give the tornado a three–dimensional
look, draw curved black lines from
one side of the tornado and white
curved lines from the other side of the
tornado, blending the two in the middle.
Evaluation
Lesson 2
1. Colour the purple hills and green field
appropriately, ensuring there are no
gaps.
2. Colour the barn using two shades of
brown to give it some dimension. Draw
windows in black oil pastel, then outline
the edges of the windows in white to
add some highlighted areas.
3. Use black oil pastel to draw debris
flying from the tornado.
4. Use fingers to smudge the debris from
the bottom of the tornado, where it
touches the ground.
