Complementary colour boxes

TASK
Colour a geometric abstract picture using complementary colour combinations.
Materials
✓✓ cartridge paper
✓✓ rulers
✓✓ lead pencils
✓✓ erasers
✓✓ black permanent markers
✓✓ oil pastels
LESSON 1
1. On cartridge paper, students use a
ruler and pencil to draw a series of
boxes, two or three boxes across and
four down.
2. Inside each box, draw a smaller box.
Vary the position of the smaller boxes
inside the larger ones to create a more
interesting picture.
3. Trace over all the lines and boxes in
black permanent marker. Ensure a ruler
is used for the tracing so the lines
remain straight.

Lesson 2
Before colouring with oil pastel, discuss
complementary colours (colours that
are opposite to each other on the
colour wheel—red and green, yellow and
purple, orange and blue). The students
use these colour combinations to
complete their picture. Ensure that the
students use the oil pastels carefully
and appropriately so that the colours
are bright and bold with no white
spaces visible.
