Exporters think that shipbuilding
is one of the two industries with
the highest export along with
automotive. Ship and Yacht
Exporters’ Association (GYİB)
Chairman Başaran Bayrak said:
“Despite the rapid growth, these
numbers are far below our targets.
Once the troubles in neighbouring
countries are eliminated and a
number of security problems are
resolved, the increase in export
will be much faster”.
Altınova Shipyard Entrepreneurs’
Chairman Fazıl Uzun emphasized
that he prefers Turkish shipyards
to China, Singapore, Korea and
Vietnam thanks to the quality
production in Turkey. Focusing
on maintenance and repair works
after the global financial crisis,
Turkish shipyards have reached the
annual capacity of 20 million dwt
in this area. The representatives
of the industry stress that
maintenance and repair with an
annual income of 600 million
dollars should also be regarded
as export.
22 percent of export by
Tersan
Recently focused on special
projects such as fishing vessels
and offshore platform supply
vessels exported to the European
market, Tersan Shipyard has been
the company with the second
highest jump on the latest İSO
500 list. Tersan moved up by 203
ranks on the list compared to the
previous year, taking its place as
the 156th this year. Signing major
shipbuilding projects in northern
Europe, especially in Norway, the
company increased its exports by
77 percent, achieving 22 percent
of exports in the industry alone.
The main slipway of Tersan on
a 220-acre land in Yalova board
is one of the biggest slipways in
Turkey with a length of 200 meters
and a width of 56 meters.
The crane on the slipway has a
lifting capacity of 550 tons. As
soon as the shipbuilding facility
in Yalova was launched, Tersan
headed for maintenance and repair
in the shipyard in Tuzla. This
shipyard has a 130 x 22.5 meter
floating pool. The shipyard aims
to be one of the few shipyards in
Europe with R&D investments,
and its R&D activities include
approved projects such as
horizontal production/ ship
launching line and sliding of
vessels. In the same shipyard,
construction of four ferries with
100 percent battery power is
underway.
In addition to these, three LNGfuelled
and battery powered
hybrid ferries are being built for
a Norwegian logistics company.
The semi-robotic panel line, which
was started in Yalova facilities last
year, the horizontal production/
ship launching line to be
commissioned later this year, and
the Panamax floating pool, which
will be started to manufacture this
year to commission next year, are
the remarkable investments on the
company’s agenda. The company
recorded export of 200 million
dollars in 2016 and currently has
500 employees.
Power ships for Africa
constructed by Sedef
Sedef, one of Turkey’s largest
shipyards, is growing rapidly in
energy and military ship projects.
The shipyard has already taken the
first step for the Landing Platform
Dock (LPD) to be built for the
Defense Industry for 700 million
Euros. Also reaching 900 MW in
construction of power ships, Sedef
Shipyard has delivered the 11th
project to the Karadeniz Holding.
The Karadeniz Powership Onur
Sultan, which is the latest one built
for Karadeniz Holding in Sedef
Shipyard and sent to Indonesia
last June, has an installed power
of 470 MW.
Sanmar with shipyards in
Tuzla and Yalova is one of the
world’s largest 10 companies in
construction of tugboats. Sanmar
built the world’s first LNG-fuelled
tugboat for Bukser og Berging
from Norway. The world’s first
remote-controlled ship “Svitzer
Hermod” was also built by Sanmar.
Designed by Robert Allen, the
Svitzer Hermod, was equipped
with Rolls-Royce Dynamic
Positioning System. Sanmar is
one of the two tug companies in
the ‘initiative of testing tugboats’
that was newly established in the
world for certification of bollard
pull capacity to determine the
trends in the industry.
So far, Sanmar Shipyard has
completed 156 tugs, 21 mooring
lines, and 11 pilot tugs and its
total export of tugs to 7 continents
has exceeded 100. Due to rapid
growth, the second phase
investment in Altınova’s new
shipyard was brought forward for
5 years. Delivering 16 pieces in the
first eight months, the company
is going to deliver another 9
deliveries by the end of the year.
Nine yachts with a value of
$53 million in six months
As of June 2018, a total of nine
boats, including super luxury
yachts, were launched in the
Antalya Free Zone, one of the
world’s three most important
centers in super luxury yacht
projects worldwide especially
in special purpose boats. The
company has a number of
outstanding projects such as
export of fishing boats, rivertype
vessels, platform supply
vessels, seismic research support
ships, ferries, and catamarans
to countries mainly including
Norway, Iceland, Denmark,
and Ukraine. The company
was awarded the world’s largest
ship tenders for construction of
offshore wind turbine support
vessels in 2016. It became the
successful bidder among nearly
35 shipyards from all over the
world for manufacturing service
operation ships for wind farms
on German and French coasts.
The shipyard has already begun
building the ship and it is also
engaged in manufacturing a
couple of the same type of ships
for Denmark. The company’s
turnover for 2016 is about TRY
237 million.
Super luxury yacht exports exceed $1 billion
production and the most important
one in Turkey. Antalya Free Zone
Corp. (ASBAŞ) General Manager
Zeki Gürses stated that the total
length of the nine boats launched
this year was 198 meters and their
total sales value was $53 million.
Sales to five countries
Zeki Gürses said the boats
launched this year were between
13 and 33 meters in length, adding
that these boats were sold to the
Netherlands, the U.K., Oman,
Qatar and the U.S. Gürses noted
that one 18-meter and two 33-meter
boats were sold to Qatar as coast
guard boats. He added that two
15-meter boats were produced as
commercial vessels, one 19-meter
boat was a catamaran, and 26-,
46-, 54- and 60-meter boats will
be launched in July and August.
Year-end target: $150
million
According to Gürses, a total of 30
yachts and super luxury yachts are
expected to be launched by the
end of 2018. “One of these yachts
measure 60 meters, four of them
are over 40 meters, 11 between 24
and 39 meters, and 15 have various
lengths up to 23 meters. By the end
of June this year, the total value
of boats produced and sold in the
Antalya Free Zone exceeded $1
billion. Our target for year 2018
is $150 million.”
Maintenance & repair
revenues: $23.4 million
Gürses stated that in addition to
being a center of super luxury
boat production, the free zone has
turned into a center of maintenance
and repair for such yachts coming
from various countries. “A total of
107 boats have come to the free
zone for maintenance and repair
since 2008. 91 of these boats
have been maintained, repaired
and delivered to their owners,
which brought in $23.47 million
in revenue. 16 of them are still
being maintained and repaired”
Gürses said.
