Prestigious fellowship to the faculty
member of İTÜ
Dr. Sevil Deniz Yakan Dündar,
faculty member of the Shipbuilding
and Ocean Engineering
Department of the Faculty of
Naval Architecture and Ocean
Engineering of Istanbul Technical
University (ITÜ), was granted one
of the prestigious fellowships of
the world in the field of ocean
engineering (Oceanography).
According to the announcement
made by İTÜ, Dr. Dündar has
become one of the four persons
admitted to the fellowship
program supported by POGO
(Partnership for the Observations
of the Global Oceans) and SCOR
(Scientific Committee on Oceanic
Research). The main purpose
of POGO-SCOR Visiting
Fellowship program which has
been applied since 2001 to make
global observations. The Faculty
Member Deniz Yakan Dündar
has been the first scientist from
Turkey accepted to the fellowship
program after a break of 10 years.

WITH SUCCESSFUL
STUDIES IN
OCEANOGRAPHY”
Dr. Sevil Deniz Yakan Dündar
made the following statement in the
above-mentioned announcement:
“I was very excited and happy
when I learned that I was granted
the fellowship since it is a very
special fellowship granted in the
oceanography. Oceanography
is predominantly offered at the
post graduate level as it requires
an interdisciplinary study. As a
member of a department giving
oceanography (ocean engineering)
courses as a compulsory course in
its circulum at the undergraduate
level, I felt myself very happy for
having the opportunity to increase
my knowledge in this branch that
I will pass over to my students
and to expand the viewpoint of
those around me. Increase of
interest in the existing studies in
oceanography is quite important.
It is one of the basic objectives
of this fellowship program to
increase the number of research
studies and cooperation in the
oceanographyby strengthening
the infrastructure of its education.
In line with that purpose, I applied
for and received this visiting
fellowship with my paper titled
“The impact of local currents
and whirlpools in the Bosphorus
using the bio-optical parameters
of phyto-planktons sampled in
coastal waters”. My purpose is
to increase the cooperation in
the field of oceanographywhich
is an interdisciplinary branch
and to attract the interests of the
students at the undergraduate level
to these topics with the training
and the knowledge that I will get
under the scope of the fellowship.
Scientist from İTÜ was granted the
2018 POGO-SCAR Visiting Fellowship
in the category of oceanography and
has become one of the four scientists in
the world who will work in this field.
POGO-SCOR PROVIDES
SIGNIFICANT
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE
OCEANOGRAPHY
POGO was established in 1999
for the purpose of extending
support to the studies of the
leading oceanography institutes
of the world in the field of global
oceanography. 38 institutes
from 20 different countries
are its members. On the other
hand, SCOR was established by
International Scientific Council
(ICSU) in 1957 for the purpose
of addressing the interdisciplinary
scientific problems related to
the oceans.It is known as an
international, non-governmental,
nonprofit organization.
Technicians, postgraduate students
and post-doctoral fellows may
apply to POGO-SCOR Visiting
Fellowship. The fellowship
program offers the opportunity
for carrying out studies to advance
sustained ocean observations and
their applications. The selected
fellows are also offered the
opportunity to visit oceanographic
centers.
