Norway to pass to zero emissions at sea
with Turkish company
Norway passed the law, which calls for zero emissions in shipping. The law requires all ferries and sea
vehicles to be powered by electricity. 2 of 7 vessels to be built following the law will be supplied by the
Cemre Shipyard.
Norway is creating the world’s first
zero emission zone on the water.
According to the proposal adopted
by the Norwegian Parliament,
emissions in the world legacy
fjords will be set to zero in
the shortest period technically
possible. The latest possible date
will be 2026.
As a result of the resolution, the
fjords on the world heritage list
known as Geirangerfjord and
Næerøyfjord will only be passed
by electric vessels instead of fossil
fuel-powered ferryboats which
increase pollution at the moment.
In this scope, Norway’s largest
ferry operator Fjord1 will
purchase 7 electric battery ferries,
2 of which will be manufactured
in Turkey, in the Yalova-based
Cemre Shipyard. The remaining
5 vessels will be built in Leirvik.
The crafts will be operational in
2020. Fjord1 carried 21 million
passengers and over 10 million
vehicles last year.
BATTERIES BY SIEMENS
PBES and German company
Siemens are in collaboration
for electric battery production
for the vessels. The Germans
are expected to invest about 100
million Norwegian krona (€ 10.5
million).
Before the law, Norway had been
working on electric maritime
transport in a relatively small
area. A national research project
also examined the development of
non- emission autonomous vessels.
The United Nations International
Maritime Organization aims to
reduce maritime carbon emissions
by 50 percent by 2050 under a
treaty recently signed with 173
nations.
The world’s fastest boat in Bodrum!
‘Yonca-Onuk’, one of the Underwater
Offense Team (SAT) special operations
crafts, came to Bodrum. It is the fastest
in the world and cannot be detected by
radar.
One of the fastest and bestequipped
military boats in the
world with a speed of 120 km/h
that cannot be detected by radar,
the MRTP 22 U type Turkish SAT
special operations craft ‘Yonca-
Onuk’, built by Ekber Onuk, a
Turkish Engineer, and deployed in
Aksaz Military Base of the Coast
Guard Command, came into the
Landing Wharf of Bodrum.
The boat has become the center of
attention and we have learned that
it will be used during the summer
season for fast intervention
against smuggling of migrants
and violation of Turkish waters
by Greek coast guard boats
in Bodrum and its districts
Yalıkavak, Gümüşlük, Turgutreis,
Akyarlar, Bitez and the nearly 55-
mile area between Kardak reefs.
It was stated that the boat was
developed for the Special Forces
and SAT teams to serve in hostile
territories, built for professional
use to provide high firing power
as well as speed, navigation and
cargo transport capabilities, and
it is currently used by the SAT
units. In the period when the
current Minister of Defense,
Hulusi Akar, was serving as the
Chief of General Staff, three of
these MRTP 22 U type Turkish
SAT special operations crafts had
accompanied Akar’s attack boat
during his visit to the Kardak
Reefs on January 29, 2017.
