Pearl mullet registered
Pearl mullet which
is an endemic
species living in
Lake Van was
registered by
the Aquaculture
Registration
Committee of the
Ministry of Food,
Agriculture and
Husbandry
Three fish species were registered
by the Aquaculture Registration
Committee of the Ministry of
Food, Agriculture and Husbandry.
The registration of anchovy and
rockfish together with pearl mullet
was welcomed favorably in Van.
Decisions of the committee on
registration were published in
the issue of the Official Gazette
the day before yesterday.
Accordingly the application
made by the General Directorate
of Agricultural Research and
Policies for the registration of
anchovy, pearl mullet and doctor
fish or rockfish was finalized.
Anchovy was registered with its
local name “Black Sea Anchovy”
and described as a “fish with a
greenish back with a blackish
tone, a pearl-grey white abdomen
part and bright edges”. Size
of the Black Sea anchovy was
determined as minimum 8 cm and
maximum 10,72 cm for females
and minimum 8 cm and maximum
9,22 cm for males. The committee
also registered garrarufa which
is known as “doctor fish”, “fatty
fish”, “rockfish” and “Kangal fish”
and kırbaki as well as pearl mullet
whose propagation area is Lake
Van basin.

LIVING
Assistant Prof. Mustafa Akkuş,
Member of the Academic Staff
of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University
(Van YYÜ) made a statement to
İHA regarding the registration of
pearl mullet. “We are here in Lake
Van together with the fishermen.
Approximately 20-30 years ago
only the people living in Van knew
the pearl mullet living in Lake
Van. It was even stated in the
books published by the Ministry
of Education that pearl mullet did
not live in Lake Van. Pearl mullet
is an asset which is only known
by those living in Van. But the
unawareness about the existence of
pearl mullet was cleared away and
it became a global brand thanks
to the studies initiated by Prof.Dr.
Mustafa Sarı. As of today, pearl
mullet has become an important
asset providing subsistence for
fourteen thousand people living
in the region, creating a turnover
of more than 12 billion USD as a
result of the efforts made by Prof.
Dr. Mustafa Sarı” said Mustafa
Akkuş. Mr. Akkuş further stated
that this rise of pearl mullet has
continued within the course of
years. “As you know we received
a pleasing news on February 16,
2018. Pearl mullet became one
of the three fishes registered in
our country based on the data
produced by Prof.Dr. Mustafa Sarı.
It was registered by the General
Directorate of Agricultural
Research and Policies of the
Ministry of Food, Agriculture
and Husbandry. Three fish species
were registered in our country.
One of them is anchovy and the
others are doctor fish, also called
fatty fish and pearl mullet. This
is a very good news in the name
of our region and fishing”.

“The rise of pearl mullet will
continue along with the increase of
the contribution of Lake Van to the
regional economy and its value.
The registration of pearl mullet as
of February 16 was published in
the Official Gazette. Pearl mullet
took a very important step in the
way to becoming a global brand.
What does the registration of
pearl mullet mean, what does it
express? As you know today all
cities and countries have their own
assests, either natural or artificial,
registered. In other words, they
increase the value of economic
contribution that they realize
through their asset by having
their ownership of that asset. It
is certified once more that pearl
mullet is a fish belonging to Lake
Van basin together with all its
characteristic features including
size, etc.. The registration makes
a great contribution to the
promotion and protection of the
fish. Because all our assets that
we fail to protect are doomed to
extinction. Accordingly, we expect
an increase in the contribution of
pearl mullet both to eco-tourism
and fishery in the region. Pearl
mullet is now a registered asset
and the efforts aiming at protection
of pearl mullet has become more
important than ever.” said Mr.
Akkuş.
