2 Cover story Continued from page 1 Thursday’s sale gave Makybe the distinction of selling the top two-priced lots in the sale, as along with the Makybe colt they sold Lot 200, the most expensive filly, who is a Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) half sister to Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) and All Too Hard (Casino Prince). The Tugela colt will race for a partnership that includes the Liston family’s Three Bridges Thoroughbreds in Victoria and owner/breeder Richard Pegum, who sold Lot 40 the first foal from his Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Amelia’s Dream (Redoute’s Choice), a filly by Encosta De Lago, for $910,000 on the opening day of the sale. “We were thinking maybe around a million, so it’s a little bit more than what we initially thought. We had to go a couple of bids further to secure him but we’re happy to be taking the colt home,” Moody said after signing the sales ticket. “I’ve seen all her [Tugela] foals, barring Makybe Diva, and I thought he was the nicest one of her progeny that I’d seen go to a sale ring. I was really attracted to him and I really liked the colt. He looks like a trainer’s horse. He doesn’t look like a show pony.” The colt is the ninth foal out of Tugela, whose four winners include the multiple Group One winner and Horse Of The Year Makybe Diva (Desert King), the Group Two winner Musket (Redoute’s Choice), who topped the Easter Sale in 2005 when making $2.5 million, and the Group Three winner Valkyrie Diva (Jade Robbery). “This colt’s a home grown product and we know he had no issues, mum throws a runner and he’s by an exciting stallion that’s done terrific things in that middle distance bracket in Australia here already,” said Moody. George Moore is a regular visitor at Australian auction sales and he bought the second highest priced lot on Thursday, Lot 414 a striking bay colt by Oasis Dream (Green Desert) out of the fourtime Group One winner Sun Classique (Fuji Kiseki), a Champion in South Africa and the UAE, for $850,000. The Sun Classique transaction highlighted an excellent sale for Patinack, who sold all 12 of its yearlings for a total $3.2 million at an average of $266,667. The final sale figures received a boost with confirmation that Lot 284 the colt by Hussonet (Mr Prospector) from the Champion filly Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) has been sold to Blue Sky Thoroughbreds/Gai Waterhouse Racing for $750,000 after being passed-in through the ring. Miss Finland won 11 races and $4.6 million, including the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). A new record price for an Easter Session Two yearling was recorded when Lot 463, Edinglassie Stud’s More Than Ready - Faith Hill filly, was purchased by John O’Shea for $360,000. Overall the sale finished down on the 2011 figures, despite having a top-priced lot sell for more than double that of 2011. The gross of $72,825,000 is down marginally from $74,240,000 in 2011 from 20 more lots sold. The average of $220,682 is down nearly seven percent from last year’s $239,484 with the median of $160,000 down more than ten percent on 2011’s $180,000. 3 Cover story Continued from page 2 The aucTioneers “Today’s top three lots, all colts, were sold to the leading trainers and owners in Victoria, Japan and Hong Kong, a fantastic endorsement of the world class product offered at Easter,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said. “The Session One average kept rising the further we got into the sale as buyers found their feet in the current market and it is great to see the Day one clearance rate rise from 74 percent at 6pm on Tuesday evening to now 82 percent. “The overall figures are down slightly on last year but we did produce a higher price than in 2011 and the all important clearance rate is stronger. We got a million-dollar lot on each of the three days, which is fantastic and the overall clearance rate is up around 82 percent, which is excellent. “I loved the Tugela colt on type, when we paraded him the other day everyone was talking about him being a superstar. Sometimes it’s all about pedigree but in this case it’s all about type. It’s great to see Three Bridges getting involved.
