“I think it has been a good sale.
“At Easter you have to bring the real horse and you get paid real
money.
“There is probably not as much speculative money from the
trainers and syndicators. Agents and trainers that have principals
are chasing the elite horses for those principals and there is plenty
of depth in that side of the market.”
Henry Field, Newgate Farm
“The sale has been strong in terms of a combination of domestic
and international money. I am surprised to see the strength of the
international market, especially considering the strength of the
dollar. We thought that this [international spend] might be slightly
down, so it is pleasing.
“In terms of our sale we have had a relatively strong, solid sort
of sale. We have had nice hoses sell well and we have also had
nice horses that have fallen through the cracks, but that is the sale
generally, I guess. It is not quite the level of 2008 and 2009 but we
are working very hard and the horses are selling, so we are happy
enough.
“What we are really happy to see is horses by our young stallions
being really well received. Sebring averaged $145,000, and Northern
Meteor averaged $180,000 at the sale, so that is really pleasing
“It is also pleasing to see business being done after a horse
goes through the ring unsold. Buyers are still working hard to fill their
orders and plenty of nice horses that have been passed in were then
sold afterwards. I think that is healthy for the sale in general.”
Ryan McEvoy, Widden
“I believe the pool of popular horses is shrinking and the top ten
percent are very hard to buy but the remainder of the catalogue is
extremely patchy. You can quite often walk in with a decent horse and
have no bid whatsoever. It shows where we are in the market place
at the moment and I am still a big believer that service fees have to
be reduced.”
