<strong>2018</strong> Kentucky Nurses Association<br />
February Board Meeting <strong>2018</strong>:<br />
• The Bluegrass Chapter awards the Karen Sexton Award every other year to a nurse nominated by a<br />
peer. This award is in honor of a chapter member who passed away and felt a passion for the bedside<br />
nurse, thus preference is given to this category. The board of directors would like to present this<br />
award at the annual <strong>KNA</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> scheduled for November 1-2.<br />
• The Bluegrass Chapter also awards the Karen Tufts award to a graduating senior nursing student<br />
nominated by his or her faculty.<br />
• A planning committee was organized for the chapter’s upcoming biennial conference which<br />
traditionally takes place in the fall.<br />
March Member Meeting <strong>2018</strong>:<br />
• Lynn Roser, chapter president, encouraged members to consider running for one of the open<br />
positions at the state level and announced upcoming vacancies on the Bluegrass Chapter board.<br />
• Sheila Schuster gave a wonderful and informative presentation about nursing advocacy and explained<br />
the nuances of lobbying at the state legislature.<br />
April Board Meeting <strong>2018</strong>:<br />
• The chapter voted to present the Karen Tufts award to Matthew Eubank, a May graduate of the Med-<br />
Vet Program at UK.<br />
• The Bluegrass Chapter continued with plans for the upcoming half-day conference tentatively<br />
scheduled for October 19, <strong>2018</strong>.<br />

• Matthew Eubank received The Karen Tufts Award at the May meeting. His award included a $100 gift<br />
and one-year <strong>KNA</strong> membership.<br />
• Two chapter members finished their doctorate degrees: Dr. Beth Gamble, PhD, RN, CNE and Dr.<br />
Heather Norris, DNP, RN. The chapter presented them with a celebratory cake.<br />
• Lexington Police Officer Big Towery facilitated the May CE program, “Workplace Violence/Active<br />
Situation: Prevention & Recognition & Response.”<br />
June Board Meeting <strong>2018</strong>:<br />
• Board members continued to write personal notes to chapter members whose ANA/<strong>KNA</strong><br />
membership was about to expire and encouraged them to renew.<br />
• The board of directors reached out to chapter members who expressed interest in serving on the<br />
board. Kim Wilder, chair of the nominating committee, and board members are reaching out to<br />
hospitals, long-term care facilities, health departments and schools of nursing to stimulate interest<br />
in serving the <strong>KNA</strong> at the local level. Board members volunteered to address envelopes and mail<br />
Nightingale brochures to funeral homes located in counties served by the chapter’s geographic reach.<br />
