<strong>2018</strong> Kentucky Nurses Association<br />
<strong>KNA</strong> Nightingale Chapter<br />
Nightingale Chapter officers include:<br />
Patricia Calico - Interim President<br />
Charlene Maddox - Treasurer (Charlene is retiring after the November meeting)<br />
Denise Alvey - Secretary<br />
Gwyneth Pyle - Scholarship Committee<br />
The Nightingale Chapter addressed components of the <strong>KNA</strong> Strategic Plan through Advocacy,<br />
Membership and Voice and Visibility through the activities delineated in this report.<br />
Meetings<br />
The Nightingale Chapter met in August and October of 2017 and March and May of <strong>2018</strong> at Ephraim<br />
McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville, Ky. Educational programs were provided at each meeting:<br />
• August 2017: Suicide Assessment and Responding to Suicide Risk, Rosalie Albright<br />
• October 2017: Sleep: An Indispensable Part of a Healthy Lifestyle, Denise Alvey<br />
• March <strong>2018</strong>: Nursing Advocacy – Your Voice Counts!, Sheila Schuster<br />
• May <strong>2018</strong>: Healthy Nurse - ANA and <strong>KNA</strong>, Denise Alvey and Patricia Calico. The new chapter banner<br />
with the Nightingale logo was presented at the May Meeting.<br />
• <strong>KNA</strong> Strategic Plan poster was displayed at meetings.<br />
Guests<br />
• The Nightingale Chapter members were honored to have guests Delanor Manson, <strong>KNA</strong> executive<br />
director, Shelia Schuster, <strong>KNA</strong> lobbyist and Eastern Kentucky University nursing students at the March<br />
<strong>2018</strong> meeting. Delanor guided students on how to register as ANA subscribers.<br />
• May Guests: John and Morgan Thacker and Elizabeth Delph.<br />
New Members<br />
The Chapter welcomed three new members to its meetings:<br />
• Elizabeth Simmons, Cynthia VanWinkle and Jeneen Walker.<br />
Member Spotlight<br />
• Barbara Sonnen was recognized for her longstanding membership in ANA – she joined in 1963 and<br />
began work with the Wisconsin Nurses Association in 1964.<br />
• Her employment included various positions in nursing and she retired from the Kentucky State<br />
Department of Health.<br />
• Congratulations to Barbara for her steadfast contributions to nursing through ANA membership and<br />
her career in nursing. She was honored with a KNF Foundation Heart.<br />
The Nightingale Chapter Scholarship<br />
Congratulations to the Nightingale Chapter Scholarship Recipients. The Scholarships were presented<br />
by Charlene Maddox and Gwyneth Pyle:<br />
• Fall 2017: Brittany Pridey of Harrodsburg is a Kentucky Christian University BSN student.<br />
• Spring <strong>2018</strong>: Morgan Thacker of Lawrenceburg is a University of Kentucky RN/BSN student.<br />
National Nurses Week<br />
• The Nightingale Chapter celebrated National Nurses Day at the May 10 meeting with a soup and salad<br />
meal and a program focused on Healthy Nurse – ANA and <strong>KNA</strong> to support the <strong>2018</strong> <strong>KNA</strong> <strong>Annual</strong><br />
<strong>Conference</strong> theme: Reclaim Nursing: Heal, Empower, and Inspire. All attendees received a National<br />
Nurses Week stadium cup and several door prizes were awarded.<br />
