MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE
During the month of September, we are focusing on training and talks
with our staff and learners as part of our anti-bullying campaign. As
stakeholders in the education of our children we take pride in this
campaign. I invite learners and parents to feel free to speak to a staff member
if you experience acts of bullying, witness acts of bullying or if you are the
bully yourself and need help.
Curro introduced tablets and e-learning for the Intermediate, Senior and FET
Phases in 2014 with mixed success. Most learners and parents embraced
this new technology; however, there were learners who chose to use hard
copies, i.e. textbooks. As from 2019, Curro will follow a blended approach,
combining textbooks and e-books. Parents may now choose if they would
rather buy hard copy textbooks or continue using e-books. Please note that
learners will still need devices, as teachers will push content (worksheets,
notes, etc.) to their devices and will not make hard copies of such work/
content for students. In due course, I will send a separate letter in this regard
outlining the process to all parents and learners.
I would like to thank all our parents, learners and teachers for your
commitment and hard work over the past term. We were truly blessed
with exceptional results and achievements in all areas of school life and
the respective heads of school will reflect on this in their sections. I would
especially like to commend the hours and hours of hard work put in by our
high school learners and staff with our first ever pantomime. This was truly
a great fun-filled evening of which we can all be very proud. I am grateful to
each parent and learner that participated in raising funds through our soap
box day. It was once again a huge success – I can only say THANK YOU! I
MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE
would like to remind all our parents about our golf day, organised by the PAC,
which is taking place at Pebble Rock on 31 October 2018. Please support this
initiative.
Child safety has made headlines in the media over the past few weeks and
I share the concerns of the community at large regarding how we take care
of our children. We are constantly monitoring the security at our school and I
would like to draw your attention to the following important matters:
• Please report any suspicious behavior by anyone immediately at reception.
• Take care in making sure your child enters our school grounds safely.
• If you need to pick up your child from school before the end of the school
day you need to report to the school’s reception and are not allowed to go
directly to your child’s register class.
Congratulations to our newly elected high school prefects. We are privileged
to have you as the leaders that will take our school to the next level in 2019.
I wish all our families and teachers well during the coming holiday. May God
bless you and your loved ones! Our grade 12 staff and learners will do final
preparations during the spring school in the holiday – good luck, you will reap
the benefits in the final exams.
Kind regards
Ferdi Niemand
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Term 3 is coming to a close in a
few weeks, but we still have a
number of exciting events still to
come into full flower and bear fruit.
We as a school can thank the Lord
that we have been blessed. Our
learners have grown so much and in
so many ways. When I reflect on the
prefect presentations and prefect camp
compared to last year, it appears to
be from a totally different school. The
eloquent way that our learners are able
to get their point across is commendable.
We have democratically managed to
select a prefect body that will lead the
way into 2019, and they definitely have
my vote. We as the Curro Roodeplaat
family must now support them all the
way. Voting by the prefects to select
who will be leading them is completed
but will only be announced during the
inauguration of the whole prefect body.
Academically, it was an easier term in
theory due to less stringent assessments
and should reflect so on the report cards
that will be handed out on the last day
of school. Having said that, take into
account this will only be applicable to
grades 8-11. Grade 12 is a completely
different kettle of fish. The Prelim Exam is
on track and feedback from the learners
is positive. But yet again, the proof is in
the pudding and their report cards will
be handed out after the holidays, since
they are writing right up until end of term.
Spring school is scheduled to take place
during the holiday and learners will work
on their prelim papers and shortfalls
even before report cards are handed
out. That is why this effort by the staff is
to be embraced.
Thank you to everybody who attended
the Grade 9 subject choice info evening.
Our Grade 10 learners will embark on
their annual Compass Camp, where
they get in touch with themselves and
where each and every one will determine
there right of way, hence the name of
the camp. In the same week, our Grade
8 and 9 learners will go on excursions
and the Grade 11 learners go on a day
of job shadowing.
Many hours of hard work will culminate
into our first ever pantomime and we
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
hope that everybody will attend the show
of the year. If the success of our choir
and the drama performance entitled
Breyten & Blake at the Tshwane Youth
Arts Festival is something to go by,
then the pantomime promises to be a
roaring success and a true celebration of
culture that is growing in stature at our
school. During the Eisteddfod Art prize
giving, Calain Bloys was announced as
the winner of Grade 10 photography
category. Mieke Bolhuis won in a number
of categories and was subsequently
declared as the overall winner of the
Pretoria Eisteddfod.
Soccer (for boys and girls), cricket, cross
country, mountain biking, chess, indoor
hockey and golf were the sport activities
of the term; and to top it all off, a number
of our boys are currently busy with rugby
and cricket trials for provincial accolades
and representation. All of them made us
proud. The scores and reflections will be
conveyed in the sports component of the
newsletter.
investment in the future - planting a tree. All
bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, the netball
started, where only the boys could score
the goals. You can imagine the true talent
we discovered. Hockey and touch rugby,
with similar rules, followed this. Then we
moved on to the Chariots of Fire Relay
Race. We concluded with the Lenteliedjie
competition. All the celebrations took
place in a house competition format. The
question remains - WHO WON?
On the last day of school, we have our
annual Matric Farewell. We want to invite
the whole community to come and enjoy
the arrival parade at school, starting at
17:00 on the red carpet. Come have a
look at the dresses and cars and wave
our matrics off to enjoy a memorable
evening at the secret venue.
As we go into the final stretch, have a wellearned
rest to come back rejuvenated to
conclude 2018 and set the foundation for
2019.
Spring Day was truly celebrated this
year. We started the day by making an
GIRLS HOCKEY
Term three has brought about a new challenge for the hockey girls. The hockey girls
are playing, for the first time, in an indoor hockey league. The goal of the league is
to sharpen the girls’ hockey skills and to keep their fitness levels up in preparation
for next year’s hockey season.
The first matches took place on the 29 August 2018 at Hatfield Christian School. The
day started with the junior team who played three games of 20 minutes each.
The results are as follows:
• Match 1 - Curro Roodeplaat against Hazeldean (3-1)
• Match 2 - Curro Roodeplaat against Hatfield Christian School (0-3)
• Match 3 - Curro Roodeplaat against Crawford College (2-0)
The seniors had a bye and will start playing their matches in the upcoming week.
Although the girls were scared at first, they enjoyed every minute of it.
We wish the girls good luck with their upcoming fixtures.
SOCCER
Soccer is still going on strongly at the high school. Our learners have exceeded the
expectations that we had of them. During this season we came up against stern opposition,
and still our learners surprised the opponents.
The u/15 and 1st team played against Hatfield Christian School and Curro Soshanguve
since the last newsletter was published. The u/15 team won Hatfield Christian
School 2 – 1 and drew 2 – 2 against Curro Soshanguve. The first team lost 4 – 3
against Hatfield Christian School and won Curro Soshanguve 4 – 2.
CHESS GAUTENG CHAMPION LEAGUE
On Saturday the 18 August Curro Roodeplaat u/15 and u/19 teams participated in
the District 1 league match at Du Preeze van Wyk in Bronkhorstspruit. Imagine, over
50 teams competing for the first place in our district. The silence…
Our u/15 team came first in the league, and the u/19 team third.
The u/15 team was invited to compete in the Gauteng league final championships.
This is a major victory for Curro Roodeplaat as our u/15 team has never before
qualified to present our school at the championships league.
On 25 August, emotions run high as the Pretoria showgrounds was transformed.
Chess matches was played inside the Badminton hall. Outside under every possible
patch of shade team strategy was discussed, planned, and practised. After every
round of chess, a stronger opponent had to be faced. Curro Roodeplaat made it to
round 4 where we unfortunately lost.
Our u/15 team is now ranked 1st in our District and 24TH in the Championship
league.
Congratulations!
THE PRIMARY SCENE
It is with gratefulness that we stand at the end of another successful term. As a
school we have experienced and accomplished so much in this short, yet busy
third term.
I thank all the participants, coaches and organisers of the eisteddfods, culture week,
cross country, cricket, soccer, hockey, tennis and equestrian. You have made this
term a super term! Without the support of you, our parents, these activities would
have been impossible. I am grateful towards you all!
A successful culture week ended on a high note with the gala evening where
learners shone like stars and showcased their many talents. Thank you, Roodies, for
the enthusiasm shown in this week!
Our book week (3-7 September) kicked-off with a spring picnic and a book
exhibition. Thank you to all our learners who donated books towards our soon-toopen-library!
Congratulations to the following five cricket players who represented us at the u.13
Big Bash cricket week at SuperSport park: Divan de Bruyn, Dirk van der Hoff, Adam
SOCCER CAMP
On Friday, 31 August the u.11 and u.13
soccer boys set off to Camp Discovery for
their soccer camp. Upon arrival the boys
did not have a lot of time to get settled in as
coaching started almost immediately. The
coaching team was led by former Bafana
Bafana star and Supersport United legend,
Phil Evans. After a busy first day the boys
cooled down and relaxed with their own
pool party. The second day started bright
and early with a team strategy coaching
session. After lunch the boys enjoyed
their down time with a very educational
game drive. The afternoon session
kicked off with the u.11 team winning
both their matches against Glenstantia
A and B. Later in the afternoon the u.13
team followed by also winning their match
against Prestige College Thornview. At
the end of the second day no one had to
tell the boys to go to bed as they were all
exhausted by the day’s activities. Sunday
left us with a final coaching session and
the prize giving ceremony. At the prize
giving Leaveill Ceylon won the MVP award
for the u.11’s and Tiisetso Hlokwe won the
MVP award for the u.13 age group.
Thank you to all the boys who made the
camp very successful and memorable for
everyone.
TENNIS
Our under 13 boys’ tennis team is on fire.
They won five out of five of their matches
up to date. The results for the past three
weeks are as follow:
Laerskool Pierneef 32 – 23
Laerskool Villieria 41 – 14
Laerskool Voorpos 29 – 26
We are extremely proud of you.
CROSS COUNTRY
Five of our learners participated at
Hoërskool Eldoraigne on 18 August 2018.
the SA team, we are still very proud of
Kwetsima Chabalala Gr 2, Armand Vivier
Gr 3, Rosou Rossouw Gr 3, Kristen Barry
Gr 4 and Ethan van Deventer Gr 6.
Curro Roodeplaat did, however, have a
PRIMARY SCHOOL CULTURE
Term 3 has been a busy term for culture! There have been many events for the
learners to take part in. The culture week took place from 20 – 23 August. Learners
enjoyed workshops in the afternoons in dance and drama. We also had “graffiti in
the quad” on Monday, 20 August. The learners thoroughly enjoyed themselves and
created magnificent artworks for us to admire. The winners for the “graffiti in the
quad” were:
• Grades 1-3: Naledi, Maxine, Rumby and Lesedi from Grade 1E
• Grades 4-6: Anrizel, Izette, Reynard and Donovan from Grade 6A
• Grade 7: Myralene, Daniele, Johané and Zandri from Grade 7A.
Congratulations to these learners! Thank you to the teachers who helped make
the workshops such fun for the learners. We hope that next year even more of the
learners will come join us at the culture week workshops and develop their talents.
The culture Gala evening was also a wonderful and enjoyable event. We watched
many different talents such as singing, dancing, playing an instrument, acting and
even stand-up comedy! It was truly a special night and we thank every learner and
parent for their input into culture.
Book Week took place from 3 – 7 September, and learners donated books to the
school’s library. Thank you for your generosity in supporting this project. We also
enjoyed a lovely spring picnic on 3 September to celebrate the change of season.
CURRO CASTLE
We had the best visit for this
year by far. Thank you very
much Captain JP Marais and
your whole team, who represented our
Police force so well. You are definitely
wonderful and we appreciate your effort
and time to come and teach and show
how much you do to serve our country.
The police officers thoroughly enjoyed
seeing our little toddlers dressed as police
or fire brigade staff. You as parents are
so original and absolutely the best. See
in our photo gallery exactly how much we
appreciate your efforts.
with joy!
We are also inviting Leeuwfontein
pre-primary to our Puppet show.
They are our outreach-friends for
2018. Any old, clean clothing or shoes
you would like to donate is most
welcome. We are going to paint
boxes, pack all the donations in there
and will deliver it to them by the end of
the year. Our appreciation is lying
deep in our hearts for another term
filled with new memories, lots of
learning, smiles and fun.
On Friday, 24 August we baked spring
flower cookies. Here is definitely a few
Michelin-star-chefs to be developed. It
smelled delicious and it tasted just as
nice.
Enjoy your holiday!
Warmest regards,
Castle staff
Our Spring day on 3 September was so
11
beautiful. We had numerous flower faces,
ladybugs and bees. You made us skip
