Oral Health Issues & Advice
by Sheila Macintyre, Practice Owner at Kilbarchan Dental
Practice
As the new University and College terms have recently started I
thought it would be useful to focus on some oral health issues
and advice for students.
As well as entering a new stage of education there is often
an exciting new social scene and, if you have moved away from home and into
student accommodation, a whole new way of living. Unfortunately, along with
this there is the risk of developing some bad oral health habits.
If you are suddenly responsible for buying your own food, resist the temptation
to blow your student loan on all the unhealthy foods mum and dad used to
only buy in moderation. There is good reason for this - over time, processed
convenience food and snacks can have detrimental effects on both your
general and oral health. They often have little nutritional value and high fat
and sugar contents. Try and shop smartly to ensure a balanced diet, make
sure you include fresh fruit and veg on your shopping list - loads can be eaten
raw so it’s actually the ultimate convenience food! Whatever you eat try not to
snack or drink sugary drinks between meals, this provides a breeding ground
for bacteria.
Energy drinks have become really popular amongst young people and can
also seem like a great way to get you through late night assignments to meet
deadline. Be warned, drinks that fall into this category have some of the
highest sugar and acid contents and it is easy to get hooked on the sugar and
caffeine hit they offer.
There is no getting around the fact that socialising and the associated alcohol
consumption is often part of student life. Again, most alcoholic drinks contain
a lot of sugar and can be highly acidic attacking the enamel that protects your
teeth. Moderation is key and may also stop you falling into bed without brushing
your teeth! Why not try drinking water between drinks.
