Cllr Colin McCulloch
Planning: Council is out of recess and it’s good to be back into
the thick of it. Progress continues to be made at Dargavel, with
work beginning on Renfrewshire Council’s wave of affordable
housing for social rent. In addition, there is fi nally movement on
plans for Bishopton’s new health centre. I know all local elected
members have been pressing for this to fi nally come to fruition,
so hopefully rapid progress will follow. I’m continuing to hear
local concerns regarding the size of the proposed new primary
school to serve the children of the Dargavel development and I am continuing to
highlight these concerns to the Council Planning Department.
Schools: In Langbank, I was pleased to be able to assist local parents in arranging
with Renfrewshire Council the construction of a covered walkway connecting the
primary school main building and its annexe. That children and staff must exit
one building and enter another exposed to the elements during the school day
isn’t acceptable. I hope work will commence shortly and will provide an update
when works are underway.
Roads: Elsewhere in Langbank, I am keen to hear views on the current condition
of Station Road Park and what local residents feel they may wish to do with it.
Recent legislative changes enable local communities to take over public assets
such as parks, which can then unlock potential funding sources that are otherwise
not available to local authorities.
Development: In Bridge of Weir, hopefully we will soon see works underway to
develop the vacant ‘Bulls Garage’ site. It’s been an eyesore for too long and the
agreed development will add much needed amenities and parking spaces to the
village.
As ever, please get in touch if you have issues you wish to raise. You can contact
me by telephone, email, on Facebook or at my surgeries.
Places for Practising Gratitude
It is probably one of the fi rst ‘life lessons’ we teach our little
ones; that we should say ‘thank you’ when we get something.
We teach this because it is polite and respectful, but also
because grateful people generally are nicer to be around!
Gratitude means not taking things for granted and expressing appreciation for
the things we have or that others do for us. Apparently the practice of gratitude
has a positive impact on our mental health and keeping a gratitude diary can
help us when life feels overwhelming.
Churches provide a place to practise gratitude – gratitude expressed to God the
giver of life and all we have. We are all naturally inclined to focus on what we
don’t have or miss in our lives, but turning our focus outwards and upwards and
thanking and praising God for what we have received in life makes for a more
contented way of living. The Bible reminds its readers that ‘the earth belongs to
God and all that is in it, the world and all who live in it.’
Saying thank you not just to one
another but also to God as the giver of
all is a life giving habit! Why not come
along and practice gratitude at your
local church this week?
Coffee Morning In Aid Of Guide Dogs
Saturday 6th October, 2018 from 10am to 12noon
Freeland Church Pirie Centre
For many years Jimmy Coats was a well-known fi gure in Bridge of
Weir striding confi dently through the village with his Guide Dog.
Jimmy lost his sight in his early forties but after he qualifi ed with
his fi rst Guide Dog he was able to carry on being independent and
with the dog’s assistance travelled to work in Springburn each
day.
Jimmy is only one of many people who have experienced the trauma of losing
their sight and wondering what the future will hold, some think they will never
be able to go out alone again, but being partnered with a Guide Dog can give
them back their confi dence and independence. The Guide Dog Association do
a wonderful job in matching the visually impaired person with the right dog,
training them to work as a partnership and continuing to care and help them
throughout that partnership.
Jimmy had fi ve guide dogs during his working life and retirement. Looking after
the dogs and providing after care is expensive and to support the work of Guide
Dogs the Renfrewshire Fund Raising Committee have arranged a coffee morning
in Freeland Church on Saturday 6th October. This date signifi es the start of
National Guide Dog week and the team hope to raise as much money as possible
to ensure that the excellent work of Guide Dogs can continue.
