New Heritage Talks in
Paisley
After a successful summer season of heritage walks in
Paisley and the surrounding area, The Urban Historian is
launching a series of heritage talks on a regular basis.
The talks will take place in Paisley Thread Mill Museum
on a Monday night beginning on the 1st October at 7pm. Over the winter the
talks will explore aspects of Paisley and Renfrewshire History from prehistory
through to modern times.
The fi rst talk on the 1st of October: ‘Witchcraft of Thread’ will explore the
arrival and introduction of fi ne thread making in 1722 and the rapid growth of
the industry in the mid-18th century. The talk will also explore the impact of
Christian Millar on the industry locally and then nationally.
On the 7th of October: ‘The Bargarran Witchhunt of 1696’ will explore the cause
and effect of the last mass witch hunt in Scotland.
On the 15th October the talk will be on ‘Paisley Abbey’. The Abbey is Paisley’s
most obvious link the medieval past of the town, but the building we see today
hides a lot more history and witnessed many more important visitors and
events that we do not talk about today. The introduction to the Abbey will be
a catalyst to future lectures on the history of the buildings, the monks and the
people who have worshipped there continuously since 1163.
The History Café Sessions will also restart on Tuesday 2nd October at 10am
in Blend Coffee Lounge on Causeyside Street. The sessions are designed to
allow people to come in have a coffee
(and or cake) and chat about the
history of Paisley and the local area.
The fi rst session will follow on from the
Monday night theme of thread making,
but the future themes will be based
on participants interest. Sessions will
continue on the 1st Tuesday of the
month.
Heritage Walks in Paisley and
Renfrewshire will continue each
weekend until the end of December
before restarting in April for the 2019
season.
Full details of all the Urban Historian’s
activities are available on the website
www.theurbanhistorian.co.uk and
other social media. Walks and talks
cost £5 for each session and can be
booked online.
