New Heritage Talks in<br />

Paisley<br />

After a successful summer season of heritage walks in<br />

Paisley and the surrounding area, The Urban Historian is<br />

launching a series of heritage talks on a regular basis.<br />

The talks will take place in Paisley Thread Mill Museum<br />

on a Monday night beginning on the 1st <strong>October</strong> at 7pm. Over the winter the<br />

talks will explore aspects of Paisley and Renfrewshire History from prehistory<br />

through to modern times.<br />

The fi rst talk on the 1st of <strong>October</strong>: ‘Witchcraft of Thread’ will explore the<br />

arrival and introduction of fi ne thread making in 1722 and the rapid growth of<br />

the industry in the mid-18th century. The talk will also explore the impact of<br />

Christian Millar on the industry locally and then nationally.<br />

On the 7th of <strong>October</strong>: ‘The Bargarran Witchhunt of 1696’ will explore the cause<br />

and effect of the last mass witch hunt in Scotland.<br />

On the 15th <strong>October</strong> the talk will be on ‘Paisley Abbey’. The Abbey is Paisley’s<br />

most obvious link the medieval past of the town, but the building we see today<br />

hides a lot more history and witnessed many more important visitors and<br />

events that we do not talk about today. The introduction to the Abbey will be<br />

a catalyst to future lectures on the history of the buildings, the monks and the<br />

people who have worshipped there continuously since 1163.<br />

The History Café Sessions will also restart on Tuesday 2nd <strong>October</strong> at 10am<br />

in Blend Coffee Lounge on Causeyside Street. The sessions are designed to<br />

allow people to come in have a coffee<br />

(and or cake) and chat about the<br />

history of Paisley and the local area.<br />

The fi rst session will follow on from the<br />

Monday night theme of thread making,<br />

but the future themes will be based<br />

on participants interest. Sessions will<br />

continue on the 1st Tuesday of the<br />

month.<br />

Heritage Walks in Paisley and<br />

Renfrewshire will continue each<br />

weekend until the end of December<br />

before restarting in April for the 2019<br />

season.<br />

The OIR Dance Group meet on a Monday at 1.30pm<br />

in the Clark Memorial Hall, Largs. Dancing consists of Ballroom, Sequence, Old<br />

Time and Scottish.<br />
