SPEAKER MEETINGS AT THE RIVER INN
Wednesday 22nd August – Hugh Kerr “Volunteering
with Sustrans”
Hugh Kerr, a
relatively recent new member
of the club had chosen to tell
members about his work as a
volunteer with Sustrans – the
national charity which has built
cycling and walking paths all
round the UK. What started as
a stretch became almost 15,000
miles, known as the National Cycle Network.
Hugh works with a group known as the Renfrewshire Rangers which looks
after the local cycle track, part of National Cycle Network Route 7. They
meet up one day a week, 52 weeks a year to pick up litter, clear overgrown
vegetation, paint bridges and repair the track.
Hugh was thanked for his work and a very interesting talk.
Wednesday 29th August – Professor Kenneth Patterson “Tenovus
Scotland – supporting medical research”
Professor Patterson – an eminent
retired consultant physician
and diabetes specialist - was
introduced by member Hamid
Khatib. He told the club about
the charity Tenovus Scotland
which supports early-stage
medical research in Scotland,
giving funding to novel projects
which often lead onto much larger
awards from the bigger funders. On average a Tenovus award leads
unlocks 10X further funding (17X last year!). A large source of income is
legacies and the charity is often favoured by donors because it provides
funding across all diseases areas. Much more information is available at
the website www.tenovus-scotland.org.uk.
INVITATION
Dinner meetings are held in The River Inn, Crosslee at 7pm for 7.30pm.
We enjoy a good meal and a tremendous variety of speakers. Some are
challenging, some amusing, but all very interesting, as indicated by the
reports above. If you are interested in Rotary and would to like to attend,
or help at any of our events, please contact the club via the “contact”
button on the website www.gryffevalley-rotary.org.uk or phone Mike Farley
Rotary BBQ and Disco at Brookfield Village Hall 24th August 2018
A hundred members and guests
enjoyed an evening of fine food and
dancing, raising almost £2,000 in
the process. The BBQ cooking of
steaks, sausages and salmon was
expertly accomplished by Bridge
of Weir Scouts and accompanying
salads were provided by member’s
wives. Andrew Macleman,
President thanked everyone for
attending and announced that
the proceeds would be used to
finance an evening out for Young Carers around Christmastime.
