Kilmacolm Civic Trust - Autumn Talk on Tuesday 9th October 2018 from 7pm in The Cargill Centre, Kilmacolm An illustrated talk by Mr James Lang, Director of Scottish Leather Group, Bridge of Weir Scottish Leather Group Limited, located in Bridge of Weir is the UK’s biggest leather manufacturer for the automotive industry, and operates one of the largest tanneries in Europe exporting to over 60 countries around the world. Everyone welcome, entrance free, refreshments served, donations welcome. kilmacolm & quarriers Work Completed on Kilmacolm Park Drainage System A £400,000 Inverclyde Council project to tackle drainage problems at Birkmyre Park in Kilmacolm has been completed. Both rugby pitches have had drainage pipes installed under the surface carrying excess water to the nearest water course, the Gryfe Water. Environment & Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “I am delighted we have been able to address the serious drainage issues affecting the park. “The pitches are an important and much appreciated asset of village life and are well used particularly by the local rugby club. “The poor drainage of the past had caused regular disruption to training and playing matches but this innovative scheme will make a huge difference.” Perforated land drainage pipes have been laid to remove excess soil water. The pipes have been carefully sized to allow very small particles to pass through the slots and fl ushed away by the fl ow of water. A secondary drainage system – slit trench drainage - uses narrow sand-fi lled trenches spaced one to two metres apart across the pitches. A water attenuation tank has also been installed to slowly release drainage water into the Gryfe Water to minimise the risk of fl ooding of the water course during heavy rain. The Advertizer kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Old Kirk Church Old Kirk Social Events 30th September OK Fest Concert by the Bridge of Weir Choral Society with organ recital by Steven McIntyre (details re venue and time will be posted on Old Kirk website and Facebook page). Outlook ‘OUTLOOK’ Kilmacolm, is a social community group, formulated for friendship and fellowship. It is led by the Community Issues team of Kilmacolm O l d Kirk. The group meets In Kidston Hall on 1st and 3rd Thursdays monthly, 2pm - 4pm. Everyone is most welcome. The varied programme includes invited Speakers, followed by items of community issues for discussion, then afternoon tea is served by our dedicated OUTLOOK team. Tea money is donated monthly to a chosen charity. CANCELLED kilmacolm & quarriers St Fillans Choir Concert By Voskresenije Russian Choir on Sunday 18th November at 7.30pm in St Fillan’s Church, Moss Road Killmacolm. There is a welcome return visit of the celebrated ‘Resurrection’ Choir Ensemble (‘Voskresenije’ in Russian) from St Petersburg. Conductor Jurij Maruk, has brought together a superb choir has eight professional male and female vocalists. The repertoire includes sacred music, ballads and traditional Russian folk songs. Tickets £10 (Pay at Door) Refreshments of wine, soft drinks & savouries. On the Programme will be songs by the children, recital pieces from Archie Morris on Flute and Piano and solo singing by Helen Knight. The Junior and Senior Choir will be making their contribution of songs from their repertoire. Tickets £5 including refreshments (pay at door). October 2018 t: 01505 613340 e: info@advertizer.co.uk 33 kilmacolm & quarriers Cllr Christopher Curley Roads: I am glad to see that Inverclyde Council offi cers have taken measures to fi x the 30mph signs at Knockbuckle Road. I understand that further works to the road will be undertaken on the 4th of October. Having seen fi rst-hand that traffi c speed on this stretch of Knockbuckle Road and would hope that the works will encourage drivers, many of whom will be local to Kilmacolm to slow down when entering the village on Knockbuckle Road, given the lack of continuous footpaths on either side of the road. Council Offi cers have also advised me that there will be undertaken a speed survey in Port Glasgow Road in January and undertaking drainage works to reduce fl ooding on the footpath at Lochwinnoch Road. Parks: The drainage works at Birkmyre Park Pitches are now complete- hopefully we will see an immediate benefi t from this substantial outlay by Inverclyde Council. The Park itself was very busy with the Kilmacolm Running festival and the St Columba’s School Summer Fete. I ‘competed’ in the 10k and I am pleased to say that my legs have just about recovered! Schools: It was great to attend the Port Glasgow High School and St Stephen’s High School Annual Prize Giving ceremonies in September. Well done to all pupils! Thefts: I was sorry to hear that lead was stolen from the roofs of the Kilmacolm Library and the surgery at the Cargill Centre. Hopefully, this is an isolated incident. My next surgeries will be at the Port Glasgow Community Campus Enterprise Centre from 7pm to 8pm on the 24/10/2018 and at Kilmacolm Community Centre from 7pm to 8pm on the 21/11/2018. The class is open to artists of all abilities from the local community. There is a weekly morning and afternoon session of 20 classes. There is tutor in attendance to assist as required. New members would be made most welcome within a good social group. The class terminates in March next year with an exhibition open to the public.
