Mistakes cost Tanners in football loss<br />

MARBLEHEAD – For the second straight week,<br />

Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff was less than pleased<br />

with how his team played. The Magicians didn’t get a<br />

first down until late in the first half, but they pounced<br />

on some Tanner mistakes to win the game 28-7 Friday<br />

night at Piper Field.<br />

“Peabody played a great game, I know they had a<br />

tough week, but we should’ve been a lot better than<br />

we were,” Rudloff said. “I honestly can’t express how<br />

disappointed I am, but I should have seen it coming,<br />

we had a terrible week of practice. We might have had<br />

a good 10 minutes here or there, but we certainly came<br />

out flat tonight.”<br />

The Magicians were fortunate that Peabody’s struggles<br />

on offense continued for the second straight game. After<br />

putting up just three points in a loss against Danvers, the<br />

Tanners finally broke through for a touchdown when Alex<br />

DeNisco hit Dylan Peluso with a 43-yard strike with 2:27<br />

left to play. Austin Leggett’s kick made it 28-7. Denisco<br />

took over for starter Matthew Jandrisevits, who took a<br />

heavy hit on a sack by Tamelle Platt.<br />

Marblehead (3-0) opened the scoring after Peabody<br />

(1-2) lost the ball trying to punt, the ball ending up on<br />

the Tanners’ seven. Tim Cronin scored two plays later,<br />

and Mason Poisson’s first of four PAT’s made it 7-0.<br />

The Magicians tried to add to their lead, but<br />

Peabody’s Brendan Caniffe swatted away a couple of<br />

Chris Gally passes in the end zone, ending the first half<br />

with the Tanners down seven.<br />

Penalties hurt Peabody in the second half, wiping out<br />

several long gains on runs by Angel Paulino and Luis<br />

Guidrys. When the Tanners were flagged on offense,<br />

it wiped out big gains, and when they were penalized<br />

on defense, it gave Marblehead excellent field position.<br />

The Magicians took advantage of the Tanners’ largesse,<br />

with Gally rushing in from the nine with 6:57<br />

left in the third quarter, making it a 14-0 game.<br />

Even when things went wrong for Marblehead, they<br />

were ending up going right. The Magicians got the ball<br />

on a short punt, and three snaps later Gally ran to the<br />

goal line where he fumbled the ball into the end zone and<br />

Devin Romain pounced on it, upping the score to 21-0.<br />

With 5:46 left, Cronin scored his second of the game<br />

from a yard out to seal the scoring for Marblehead.<br />

Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said his team is a<br />

work in progress and it’ll keep working to get better.<br />

“Are we happy that we’re 1-2? No, we’re not, but<br />

Danvers and Marblehead are two of the best teams on<br />

our schedule, so we’ll keep working and it will come,”<br />

Bettencourt said. “We need to get some momentum,<br />

get some first downs, and get some confidence. It’s<br />

the big picture, it’s a big puzzle, and the things are still<br />

being put into place, now we get ready for our next four<br />

games, trying to get better on offense and defense.”<br />

Peabody hosts Revere Friday night (7). The<br />

Magicians aim to remain undefeated when they visit<br />

Beverly next Saturday (1).<br />

Fenwick boys soccer team is really<br />

starting to round into form,<br />

and it showed it Wednesday afternoon.<br />

The Crusaders scored<br />

early and kept the pressure<br />

on all game long, shutting out<br />

Catholic Central League foe<br />

Arlington Catholic, 4-0, at<br />

Donaldson Stadium.<br />

“We had a really good offensive<br />

day today, and that was<br />

led by our three guys up front<br />

in Sean Kern, Tarek Nabbout<br />

and Sean Walsh who did an<br />

excellent job,” said Fenwick<br />

coach Tony Enos. “We’ve been<br />

working on putting some new<br />

systems into play, and the guys<br />

did a great job with that today.”<br />

Kern scored two goals in the<br />

victory, while Brendan Crichton<br />

had one goal and one assist.<br />

Liam Crichton had one goal.<br />

“The ball movement was excellent<br />

for us today, which was<br />

great to see because we’ve been<br />

working on that lately,” Enos<br />

said.<br />

The Crusaders were aggressive<br />

right from the opening<br />

kick, sending scoring chance<br />

after scoring chance right at<br />

the Arlington Catholic net.<br />

While the first few chances<br />

were either stopped or missed<br />

the net, Fenwick cashed in less<br />

than 10 minutes into the game<br />

on a goal by Kern, giving the<br />

Crusaders a 1-0 lead.<br />

For the rest of the first half,<br />

it was actually Fenwick’s defense<br />

that stood out. Arlington<br />

Catholic began to try to push<br />

the pace on offense, but every<br />

time the Crusaders would break<br />

up a pass, kill the Cougars’ momentum<br />

and take the ball back<br />

the other way. Enos credited the<br />

solid defensive play on his experienced<br />

back line.<br />

“Our back line is very strong,<br />

even though we have struggled<br />

a bit with the center-back position<br />

recently,” Enos said. “We<br />

tried something a little different<br />

today and it worked really well<br />

for us.”<br />

Despite a couple more<br />

Fenwick scoring chances,<br />

the first half ended with the<br />

Crusaders up 1-0.<br />

In the second half, Fenwick<br />

once again struck early. Just<br />

over five minutes into the half,<br />

Brendan Crichton knocked<br />

the ball off an opposing player’s<br />

foot in the offensive zone.<br />

Crichton then flipped the ball<br />

up into the air, slipped past a defender<br />

and settled the ball right<br />

back onto his left foot. After<br />

moving it over to his right foot,<br />

Crichton reared back and booted<br />

a strike into the back of the net to<br />

give Fenwick the 2-0 lead.<br />

Crichton’s goal boosted the<br />

momentum another notch for<br />

the Crusaders. About seven<br />

minutes after Crichton found<br />

the back of the net, he sent a<br />

perfect assist to his brother,<br />

Liam Crichton, for a goal to<br />

make it 3-0.<br />

Just 10 minutes later, Kern<br />

found some open space on the<br />

left side of the field and ran<br />

with the ball about 40 yards before<br />

firing a shot into the net for<br />

his second goal of the game.<br />

Now at 2-2-1, the Crusaders<br />

are starting to look like the<br />

team Enos knows they can be.<br />

But with two more tough games<br />

early next week (both road<br />

games against Austin Prep and<br />

Archbishop Williams), there is<br />

still plenty of work to be done.<br />

“We do a lot of video work here,<br />

and that’s going to be no different<br />

this coming week,” Enos said.<br />

“We’re going to prepare hard for<br />

both teams, work on some more<br />

strategy and hopefully come out<br />

with more performances like the<br />

one we had today.”<br />

The Crusaders’ next game is<br />

Friday, Sept. 28 at home against<br />

Lowell Catholic (3:45).<br />
