MARBLEHEAD – For the second straight week,
Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff was less than pleased
with how his team played. The Magicians didn’t get a
first down until late in the first half, but they pounced
on some Tanner mistakes to win the game 28-7 Friday
night at Piper Field.
“Peabody played a great game, I know they had a
tough week, but we should’ve been a lot better than
we were,” Rudloff said. “I honestly can’t express how
disappointed I am, but I should have seen it coming,
we had a terrible week of practice. We might have had
a good 10 minutes here or there, but we certainly came
out flat tonight.”
The Magicians were fortunate that Peabody’s struggles
on offense continued for the second straight game. After
putting up just three points in a loss against Danvers, the
Tanners finally broke through for a touchdown when Alex
DeNisco hit Dylan Peluso with a 43-yard strike with 2:27
left to play. Austin Leggett’s kick made it 28-7. Denisco
took over for starter Matthew Jandrisevits, who took a
heavy hit on a sack by Tamelle Platt.
Marblehead (3-0) opened the scoring after Peabody
(1-2) lost the ball trying to punt, the ball ending up on
the Tanners’ seven. Tim Cronin scored two plays later,
and Mason Poisson’s first of four PAT’s made it 7-0.
The Magicians tried to add to their lead, but
Peabody’s Brendan Caniffe swatted away a couple of
Chris Gally passes in the end zone, ending the first half
with the Tanners down seven.
Penalties hurt Peabody in the second half, wiping out
several long gains on runs by Angel Paulino and Luis
Guidrys. When the Tanners were flagged on offense,
it wiped out big gains, and when they were penalized
on defense, it gave Marblehead excellent field position.
The Magicians took advantage of the Tanners’ largesse,
with Gally rushing in from the nine with 6:57
left in the third quarter, making it a 14-0 game.
Even when things went wrong for Marblehead, they
were ending up going right. The Magicians got the ball
on a short punt, and three snaps later Gally ran to the
goal line where he fumbled the ball into the end zone and
Devin Romain pounced on it, upping the score to 21-0.
With 5:46 left, Cronin scored his second of the game
from a yard out to seal the scoring for Marblehead.
Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said his team is a
work in progress and it’ll keep working to get better.
“Are we happy that we’re 1-2? No, we’re not, but
Danvers and Marblehead are two of the best teams on
our schedule, so we’ll keep working and it will come,”
Bettencourt said. “We need to get some momentum,
get some first downs, and get some confidence. It’s
the big picture, it’s a big puzzle, and the things are still
being put into place, now we get ready for our next four
games, trying to get better on offense and defense.”
Peabody hosts Revere Friday night (7). The
Magicians aim to remain undefeated when they visit
Beverly next Saturday (1).
PEABODY — The Bishop
Fenwick boys soccer team is really
starting to round into form,
and it showed it Wednesday afternoon.
The Crusaders scored
early and kept the pressure
on all game long, shutting out
Catholic Central League foe
Arlington Catholic, 4-0, at
Donaldson Stadium.
“We had a really good offensive
day today, and that was
led by our three guys up front
in Sean Kern, Tarek Nabbout
and Sean Walsh who did an
excellent job,” said Fenwick
coach Tony Enos. “We’ve been
working on putting some new
systems into play, and the guys
did a great job with that today.”
Kern scored two goals in the
victory, while Brendan Crichton
had one goal and one assist.
Liam Crichton had one goal.
“The ball movement was excellent
for us today, which was
great to see because we’ve been
working on that lately,” Enos
said.
The Crusaders were aggressive
right from the opening
kick, sending scoring chance
after scoring chance right at
the Arlington Catholic net.
While the first few chances
were either stopped or missed
the net, Fenwick cashed in less
than 10 minutes into the game
on a goal by Kern, giving the
Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
For the rest of the first half,
it was actually Fenwick’s defense
that stood out. Arlington
Catholic began to try to push
the pace on offense, but every
time the Crusaders would break
up a pass, kill the Cougars’ momentum
and take the ball back
the other way. Enos credited the
solid defensive play on his experienced
back line.
“Our back line is very strong,
even though we have struggled
a bit with the center-back position
recently,” Enos said. “We
tried something a little different
today and it worked really well
for us.”
Despite a couple more
Fenwick scoring chances,
the first half ended with the
Crusaders up 1-0.
In the second half, Fenwick
once again struck early. Just
over five minutes into the half,
Brendan Crichton knocked
the ball off an opposing player’s
foot in the offensive zone.
Crichton then flipped the ball
up into the air, slipped past a defender
and settled the ball right
back onto his left foot. After
moving it over to his right foot,
Crichton reared back and booted
a strike into the back of the net to
give Fenwick the 2-0 lead.
Crichton’s goal boosted the
momentum another notch for
the Crusaders. About seven
minutes after Crichton found
the back of the net, he sent a
perfect assist to his brother,
Liam Crichton, for a goal to
make it 3-0.
Just 10 minutes later, Kern
found some open space on the
left side of the field and ran
with the ball about 40 yards before
firing a shot into the net for
his second goal of the game.
Now at 2-2-1, the Crusaders
are starting to look like the
team Enos knows they can be.
But with two more tough games
early next week (both road
games against Austin Prep and
Archbishop Williams), there is
still plenty of work to be done.
“We do a lot of video work here,
and that’s going to be no different
this coming week,” Enos said.
“We’re going to prepare hard for
both teams, work on some more
strategy and hopefully come out
with more performances like the
one we had today.”
The Crusaders’ next game is
Friday, Sept. 28 at home against
Lowell Catholic (3:45).
