12 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 SEPTEMBER 27, 2018 Tanners are no match for Lynnfield By Anne Marie Tobin PEABODY — The Lynnfield girls volleyball team extended its season-long win streak to seven Monday night, defeating host Peabody 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25- 22) to improve to a perfect 7-0. The match was closer than the score suggests as the Tanners (4-3) pushed the Pioneers to the limit in each of the last two sets, particularly in the third set when Lynnfield trailed for nearly the entire set until finally taking the lead for good at 22-21 on a monster kill down the left sideline by Sam Lebruska (12 digs, 8 kills). She came up big a couple of points later with a cross-court kill to set up match point at 24-22. Sam DeGeorge and Sophia Wilkinson (11 assists, 2 kills, 3 aces) secured the set and match with a double-block at the net. “Our energy was there in the first set and we celebrated a lot of big moments and shots, but I think we just got a little too comfortable in the second set, but I have to give credit to Peabody coach Lisa Keene for making the defensive adjustments,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Ashley. “I saw Peabody play Malden and they were not at all into it as they were tonight, so we needed to up the energy level. I think that the shot of the match was Sam’s shot down the line in that third set. She had hit a few long balls, but really hit that shot when we needed it. If she doesn’t make that shot, I’m not sure we win that set.” Despite the loss, which snapped the Tanners’ fourgame win streak, Keene took away many positives from the match. “What I saw tonight is such great improvement, both individually and as a team, from those first two tough matches against North Andover and Danvers,” Keene said. “Honestly, what hurt us tonight was we had too many service errors. When you have four, five, six errors in a set, you are not going to win that set, and had we cut down those errors we could have won those two sets. The teams traded points until finally Lebruska put the set away with a crosscourt kill from the left side to put the Pioneers on top, 1-0. The second set was a different story. Neither team could seize any momentum or put any runs together. Lynnfield took its largest lead at 13-9 on an ace by Wilkinson, but Peabody fought back to level the match at 22 all. Trailing 22-19, Ava LaValle (7 kills) sandwiched Santos makes name for himself By Harold Rivera WORCESTER — It didn’t take long for Doug Santos to make a name for himself on the football team at Peabody High. The 2015 graduate was known for giving opposing teams headaches on Friday nights as one of the most feared running backs in the Northeastern Conference, shattering nearly every rushing record in program history. Fast forward to 2018 and Santos is carving out a similar role for himself at Division II Assumption College. In 11 games last season as a sophomore, Santos ran the ball 68 times for 300 yards and five touchdowns. He missed a few games as he recovered from a high ankle sprain suffered during Assumption’s season opener. Santos helped the Greyhounds to an 11-2 finish and a trip to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, the most successful season in program history. This year, Santos had picked up where he left off. In four games, he has picked up 235 rushing yards on 43 carries with four touchdowns and has also caught eight passes for 48 yards. Last Saturday, he had a marquee afternoon against Pace, scoring three touchdowns to lead the 3-1 Greyhounds to a 49-21 victory. “My first year it was kind of just coming out of high school and playing college football, which is a whole different monster,” Santos said prior to the start of the season. “I got hurt during my first game last year. I kept my head up. Toward the end of the year I felt a lot healthier. I felt much better at the end of the season. I’m ready to take on this year with a full head of steam.” Plenty of changes took place during the offseason at Assumption. The Greyhounds hired Andy McKenzie in February as their new head coach and Tommy Galt as their new offensive coordinator. McKenzie and Galt have brought in a new offensive system at Assumption but it suits Santos. “I think I fit into the new system very well,” Santos said. “It’s different because we have a couple different reads now. We’re out running more routes on a pass. I feel like it gives us opportunities to make plays. I’m very grateful for that. “I think I have to be a little more patient than last year. Last year I was anxious, I wanted to get the ball and go. With this offense we slow things down a little bit to make the right reads and cuts. That’s what I’m trying to improve on and work on.” With veteran leadership at the forefront, the Greyhounds have made their best effort to get past the learning curve that comes with a new coaching staff taking over the program. Santos said challenges have come up along the way but the Greyhounds, who return 14 starters, were prepared to handle them. “We’re looking very solid right now,” Santos said. “It’s not easy putting in a whole new offense and defense, but with the type of guys that we have here we look like Basketball tryout schedule Tryouts for the Peabody Basketball Association travel teams will be held Oct. 1-3 at the Higgins Middle School gymnasium. Despite the lofty goals, Santos said Assumption’s plan is to take a “one game at a time” approach. “We have it on our minds that we just have to be 1-0 every Saturday,” Santos said. “That’s what we’ll think about every Friday, just going 1-0 on Saturday. If we taking it one game at a time I think we’ll be fine in the long run. A criminology major, things have gone well for Santos academically. The academic year started earlier this week at Assumption. Santos applauded his coaches and the athletic department for opening resources whenever they’re needed. “It’s nothing we can’t handle,” Santos said. “The coaches are here to help us a lot. Behind Rachel Coleman’s serve, the Tanners ran off the first three points of the match before a serving error closed out the run. Peabody led by as many as five, 12-7, before Lynnfield battled back to tie the match, 14-14. Peabody responded with a 4-1 run, the big shots being an ace by Tatiana Correia (24 digs) and a winner by Martyna Kot (14 digs, 4 kills) to regain the lead at 18-15 and still led 19-16 before Lynnfield found its rhythm and clawed back to tie the match at 21 all. Lebruska gave Lynnfield its first lead of the set, 22-21 with her down-the-line kill to set the stage for the final three points of the match. “Her shot that hit the line was a Melissa Morelli type kill that we needed in that moment, it just came from a different hitter,” said Ashley. Keene could only wonder what a different match it might have been had the Tanners not committed too many service errors. “It definitely came down to our service game, but I was proud of our defense, especially from Tatiana and Martyna and Rachel as there were so many balls that could have hit the floor, but they really played all out and just flat out went for those balls tonight to keep points alive. That was huge for us.” Ashley singled out the play of Sofia Ciriello, who had 16 dig and a strong service game with five aces. Bettencourt, a former Peabody quarterback, and his wife, Lauren, took Santos into their family as foster parents. Santos still keeps in touch with the Bettencourts on a regular basis and the family often attends Assumption’s games. “(Mark) supported me every step of the way and I’m thankful for him, Lauren and the kids,” Santos said. “They’re always supporting me and having my back through whatever I go through. “We talk about everything. I’m always checking up on him and he’s always checking up on me. He asks me about school and social life. I ask him about the family and everything. I try to stay in touch with the kids as much as possible.”
