“
Who’s THE MAN!” I roared to my Rana as I
nearly tumbled off the ladder in celebration.
With (almost my) blood, (a great deal of)
sweat and (close to) tears - along with that frightening female “look”
that terrorizes all men, I had done the improbable; NO, make that the
impossible!
I got our big screen television back to life.
Regular readers are well-aware of my mechanical-challenged
abilities. I have no hesitation in confirming what my Ladylove has
advised to anyone who will listen: when it comes to those “manly”
requirements, the publisher of The Vegas Voice is useless.
Now as I previously mentioned, I thankfully have a “silver bullet” -
my Bronx brother, best buddy and Vegas Voice columnist Bill Caserta.
The man can solve and fix anything; and so long as he tolerates me,
I’m in good shape.
But this was different. Bill and Barbara were in Europe and our TV
picture was now a black box. Make no mistake, there was panic in the
air.
To further complicate matters, Rana had just purchased an Amazon
Fire TV Stick. “Look at all the options” she proudly announced. “We
may never go out again.”
And to really put yours truly in her potential cross-hairs, she was told
by the 20-something techno-jerk when she purchased the gadget, that
“even an idiot” can hook it up. “Good” she replied to this pimplefaced
geek, “I have one at home.”
So anyway, with my manhood (and idiocy) at stake, I slowly opened
the box. Trying desperately to recall what Bill has told me countless
times, I ever so carefully emptied the contents.
Luckily, the instructions contained “pictures” and I was (eventually)
able to connect the HDMI thingy (by the way, anybody know what
HDMI means?) into the TV. It worked.
So as I patted myself on the back, we settled in for the evening. The
Call Me Mr. Fix-It!
Another Guardianship Seminar
Vegas Voice political editor Rana Goodman with Las Vegas City
Councilman Steve Seroka at Atria Seville Senior Living Facility in
Summerlin last month. Residents were able to obtain free notary
services for their Guardianship Nomination forms. It was our 17th
guardianship seminar this year.
October 2018
crisis however was the next day.
While I knew to switch the HDMI remote button from 2 to 1, when
I did so, our “regular” channels failed to appear. A totally dark screen.
“Do something!” my Rana commanded. Looking at our four TV
remotes - and all those other buttons (which Bill told me never to
touch) I felt a tightness in my chest and sweat appearing from every
part of my body.
I immediately reached for my cell to call Bill – but remembered he
was in Italy. I quickly calculated the time zone difference and realized
that he probably would not get back to me since it was after 3:00 am
his time.
Rana’s grandchildren weren’t around either. No; it was all on me.
Nervously, I climbed the stepstool and saw (no exaggeration, about
a gazillion) wires and plugs behind the mounted TV. “Hurry” Rana
thundered. “I don’t want to miss America’s Got Talent. It’s the semifinals.”
Not having a freakin’ clue as to what I was doing or even looking
for, I felt the strange presence of Bill by my side telling me to stay
calm (“The Force will be with you.” his Obi-wan Kenobi assured this
terrified Luke Skywalker).
Drying my trembling hands, I touched (once again, no exaggeration,
about a million) wires, cords and other stuff - and after what seemed
like an eternity …a miracle. Picture and sound appeared from the
heavens. It was a gift from God.
Never mind that I had to simply plug the cord back in - it’s the result
that counts.
Rana, you hear that? I joyfully shouted. It was the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir singing Handel’s “Hallelujah.” Rather than join
in, she simply shook her head over her PILL’s (partner in love & life)
exuberance in hearing the harmonic voices.
Snicker all you want, but I now know exactly how Edison felt when
he saw that bulb light up for the first time; how Sir Edmond Hillary felt
when he reached the top of Mt. Everest; when…well, you get the idea.
I was Rocky Balboa. “Yo Adrian, I did it!” Even Rana smiled, but I
think she was just relieved that I did not break anything.
Anyway we sat on our recliners in time to watch “AGT” (with picture
and sound in perfect condition, I must proudly add) and, as usual, fell
asleep half-way through the telecast. But no worries, Mr. Fix-It knew
how to “record” the show.
And the best news of all – Bill returned home 3 days later.

By: Mike Landry / Golf Fore Ever
For those not familiar with the USGA GHIN
handicap system (required for those who
play in USGA sanctioned tournaments) here’s a
quick lesson.
Why is a handicap used? It levels the
playing field. It enables players of differing abilities to compete on an
equitable basis.
Example: If player 1 has a 20 handicap index and player 2 has a
+4 handicap index, then player 2 spots golfer 1 “24 shots.” Now the
players are playing heads up golf.
How the Index works? The handicap index is a course
independent measure that shows up on your Handicap Card and is
specific to your abilities. It’s adjusted depending on the course you
play.
Check with the Pro Shop for the course Rating/Index sheet so you
can determine your handicap for each course you play (they are
all different). When you input your scores in the GHIN system, the
computer adjusts for each course you play, tees used and so on.
What is ESC Score? (Equitable Stroke Control) and the table
below shows the maximum number of strokes that a player can take
on each hole based their handicap.
I’ve Been Thinking
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Why the sun lightens our hair, but
darkens our skin?
Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic
Wins Lottery”?
Why is “abbreviated” such a long word?
Why is it that Doctors call what they do “practice”?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor and dishwashing
liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a “broker”?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called “rush hour”?
Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?
Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes when he had the chance?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the “terminal”? And
speaking of flying, you know that indestructible black box that is used
on airplanes? Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff?
Spell Check: Let me tell you friends, that just one simple spelling
mistake can make your life hell. A friend of mine recently texted a short,
romantic note to his wife while he was away on a football weekend, and
he missed one small “e.”
No problem you might say. Not so! This tiny error has caused him to
seek police protection just to enter his own house.
He wrote, “Hi darling, I’m enjoying and experiencing the best time
of my whole life, and I wish you were her!”
And Finally: I know you have been laying awake at night
wondering why baby diapers have brand names such as Luvs, Huggies
and Pampers, while undergarments for us seniors are called Depends.
Well here is the Bill’s Blurbs answer: When babies “go” in their
pants, people are still gonna Love’em, Hug’em and Pamper’em.
When we do the same thing, it “Depends” on who’s in the will!
Bill Caserta is the Project Director for The Vegas Voice and
Tin Pan Alley
By: Yvonne Cloutier / Musical Moments
Before the 1890s, popular songs were written
but composers hired solely for sales profits
did not exist. This all changed when the Tin Pan
Alley era developed.
Tin Pan Alley was an area on West 28 th Street between Broadway and
6 th Avenue in Manhattan, New York. Fledgling publishers and composers
who had a vision of being able to have their music published pursued
this business of getting their music out to the public on a big scale.
They congregated here. The Tin Pan Alley name was eventually given
to these thriving businesses.
They began in simple brownstone flats. The office usually consisted
of a broken-down, out-of-tune piano, a second-hand desk and chair
and wooden racks holding the stock of sheet music.
Musicians, usually piano players called pluggers (some good, some
bad), were hired to play the songs for singers and night club owners
looking for new material.
This music business began to thrive as publishers then hired
composers and lyricists on a permanent basis to create popular songs.
These composers became popular because some of their songs became
hits - either because they were songs that people liked, or because
of the sales pitches that the publishers used. Publishers would then
market these songs in sheet music form. Covers were colorful and very
attractive, often with the singer’s picture on them.
If an unknown composer brought a song to one of these businesses,
the publishers would put one of the popular composer’s names on the
music as co-writer in order to create sales. Sometimes, singers of the
songs, as with Al Jolson, would require that their names be on the music
as co-writers so as to get monetary credit.
It became a time when a song’s popularity was determined by the
number of copies of sheet music the song sold. They were not always
the best songs, and most of them did not become standard songs that
we hear today.
How did Tin Pan Alley get its name? It is reported that a newspaper
reporter said that the din of competing pianists plugging the songs
sounded like a bunch of tin pans clanging. Also, the shabby area looked
like an alley. Thus the name: Tin Pan Alley.
background, specializes in ragtime piano. She reports about
music on SCA-TV.com/Anthem Alive! You can contact her
What’s Happening This Month
By: Evan Davis / Entertainment Editor
It’s the month of Witches & Warlocks, but
there’s nothing scary about the shows and
talent we can see in Vegas. We get quite a diverse
list of entertainment, starting with a wonderful
jazz guitarist, Graham Dechter, who will be performing December
10 th and 11 th at Myron’s Cabaret Jazz in The Smith Center.
Let’s also check a quick week of entertainment - starting with Kelly
Clinton’s open mic at the Bootlegger Bistro and then Tuesday night
to hear Craig Canter at Tattoria Reggiano in Downtown Summerlin.
Wednesday starts the beginning of the week for The Italian American
Club with different singers nightly. Stop by the Piazza Lounge on
Thursday night October 4 th or 25 th to see Jonathan Karrant, and of
course, Nik Mastrangelo at Monzu Pizzeria on Friday.
There are always a couple of special performances you can see just
about every month, if not every week. For instance, A.J. Lambert,
Frank Sinatra’s Granddaughter, is performing at the Bootlegger
Bistro’s Copa room on October 27 th and Jimmy Hopper will be
performing at Myron’s Cabaret Jazz on October 29 th .
You must get to see Cocktail Cabaret, featuring the talent of
Philip Fortenberry, Eric Jordan Young, Daniel Emmet (with
our congratulations for being a finalist on America’s Got
Talent!), Niki Scalera and Maren Wade, at Cleopatra’s Barge in
Caesar’s Palace Wednesday - Saturday at 6:00 pm.
And of course, on Saturday, October
20 th , The Vegas Voice is presenting
“Lullaby on Broadway” at Sun City
MacDonald Ranch featuring the vocals
of Randal Keith and Genevieve
Dew under the musical direction of
Bill Fayne (See page 13). A show you
won’t want to miss!
***Permit me to once again, tell
everyone about the fantastic pleasure I
Nightlife Editor
OLD SIGNS.
NEW TECHNOLOGY.
Introducing Brilliant, the newest
interactive experience at The Neon
Museum. This revolutionary art form
uses sight and sound to transport you
through time and bring long dormant
signs back to life. If all this seems hard
to picture, that’s because it is. You
literally have to see it to believe it.
Becoming Samadhi
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
here has never been a word that can convey
Tthe equivalent translation for Samadhi.
Even if there was an accurate definition on a mind
level, it would still be difficult to understand, since
the only way to fully know Samadhi is to experience it.
In the movie “Samadhi: Maya the Illusion of the Self” Samadhi in
ancient Sanskrit refers to “the transcendent union that is at the root
of all spirituality and all self-inquiry. Awakened beings throughout
history have learned the wisdom of self-surrender to what Buddha
called “Anata”, that which lies beyond name and form.”
When we are born, we are told who we are, by our culture and
society. At the same time, we become slaves to the deeper unconscious,
biological craving and aversion that governs our choices.
As we became more and more immersed in our daily lives we forget
who we truly are. We also forget what we have forgotten - why we’re
here and where we’re going.
Rather than human “beings” we’ve become human “doers.”
Therefore, whatever we want to attain is ego based.
In seeking spirituality, it isn’t the seeking that’s the problem. It’s
thinking that the answer lies in some external form.
However in Samadhi, our soul’s journey is like life and death or the
Yin and Yang. An inseparable continuation that is endlessly unfolding
with no beginning and no end. Where there is no fear of life or death.
Samadhi is where our world of duality merges and is rejoined as
supreme souls that have no needs or wants. The place where all fears,
doubts, dualities and differences vanish and where the thinker and the
thought become one.
It is where the surrendered ego and soul merge. Here slates are
wiped clean of any attachments of ego/mind or any limiting identity;
ultimately leaving us with a heart connection to everyone and
everything.
With Samadhi, reincarnation is no longer needed, since the merged
energy, comes together to form a complete energy system that can
sustain itself on either side, or, as quoted in the book of Genesis:
“Become ye as the Gods.”
The New Dress Codes
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
read a newspaper column recently that
I bemoaned the…uh…slutaciousness of
the clothing on young girls nowadays, and I was
thrilled that someone out there is actually awake!
As a teacher, I gotta tell you, folks - the outfits which our girls come
to school today are so appallingly hussy-fied I sometimes don’t even
know where to look. You grandmas and granddads out there: do you
have ANY idea what your grandchild is wearing?
As the parent of teenagers, I could always find clothes they could
wear that wouldn’t give me, say, an aneurysm, and today is no different.
If the that’s-all-there-is-out-there fantasy my child was spinning were
really true, and I couldn’t find one single pair of jeans on this earth
that weren’t too small for my daughter or too large for my son, and
there were no blouses that actually had sleeves wide enough to hide a
bra strap, well, I would scream loudly on a street corner for something
to be done.
(Or, if I could work a sewing machine without copious blood loss
– and resulting togs that bring “Heidi” to mind – I’d make outfits
for them myself, which they would wear under threat of being homeschooled!)
But, that fantasy is not true. Some teen, one day, upon returning
from the mall with an outfit her parents assumed was for her Barbie:
Mom (small frown, tsk tsk): “Dear, you could get a sun burn
through that blouse, and you seem to have forgotten the other half of
your skirt.”
Dad (spluttering, slack-jawed, face turning several shades of a
chartreuse-like color): “B-b-…I-I-I-…di-di-…”
Daughter (whining): “Mo-o-o-om, this is all they sell now, I swe-eear!
I couldn’t find one pair of shorts that covered my rear, or a single
dress that would be acceptable anywhere but Hooker Street! I’m no-oo-ot
ki-i-i-idding!”
And, her parents bought it, and that one day changed the course of
teen history. From that day on, it became acceptable for a young girl to
wear clothes that are not only too revealing, too small, and too skanky,
but are also really ugly (and I am a veteran of the bellbottom, elephant
pants years, so I KNOW ugly!).
And for guys to wear pants that are so insanely large that they must
hold onto the crotch as they walk – NOT because it’s cool, but because
otherwise the pants will literally fall to their ankles.
From there, we saw not just purple hair, black lipstick, and “goth”
garb, but the tattoos. Not just tiny butterflies on the back of a shoulder,
either. I’m talking big honking skulls, snakes and various cute little
adages like, “Die, M---F---!” and “Kill the B---!” Charming.
Then came piercings: one or two… or seven holes in the ear, on
the nose, above the eyebrow, through the tongue (which, please, just
shoot me) and beside the lip. These will come in handy when they have
children, because they give babies something to look at and play with
(grab…rip out) while they’re having a bottle.
On the other hand, when you’re walking down the aisle on your
father’s arm, girls, how great will it be to have a nose ring chained
to an earring under that veil (surprise!) or to talk so funny around
your tongue piercing that no one’s sure if you said: “In sickness and in
health” or “Id tickbut ad id helf”?
Vicki Wentz is a writer, teacher and speaker living in North
Carolina. Readers may contact her - and order her new children’s
book! - by visiting her website at www.vickiwentz.com.
Today’s Fashion
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / 60s to 60
The other day I was in a restaurant when I
noticed how everyone was dressed. When
you’re sitting in a bar area, you see all.
Nobody looks fresh! There is no such thing anymore and I am
longing for the fashion police to turn the tables on us and make men
shave, get the crap out of their hair, and look like men again.
As for the women, I guess they save money because those old, torn
jeans are the rage. Attach some rhinestones, add a little lace and you’re
today’s fashion statement.
Just look at the ads in Town & Country to see tattered jeans with a
$3,000 handbag. I think it also has something to do with where the
rips and tears are to determine if the jeans are old or cost another $800.
Tattoos, once reserved for bad boys are a badge of honor for some.
The more you have, the more your status goes up. Women are on the
list too.
I understand a permanent mark to remember something or someone,
a lost love, a cause or symbol of your faith. I don’t understand skulls
and all the weapons art burned into someone’s skin forever.
And the unshaven look for men has gone just a little over the top in
my opinion. It’s one thing to grow a beard and keep it trimmed in an
orderly fashion. It’s quite another to look like you just woke up from a
3-day drunk.
I think of myself as progressive and am constantly aware that each
generation has its own fashion statement and stamp of authenticity.
After all, miniskirts,
teased hair, clog
shoes and Cleopatra
eyes were my look
at one time. I can
only imagine what
everyone thought of
us back then.
Looking at the
old photos, we really
did look ridiculous.
I even have one of
me with giant hair,
false eyelashes and
a stupid bow right
in the middle of that
hair.
I must have
thought I was foxy
enough to have my
picture taken. There
I was with a smug
little smile looking all sassy.
What I find amusing is that as fashions change, so does my perception
of them. I was so influenced by magazines that I never developed my
own style. Aside from parting my hair on the left for my whole life,
everything else was according to the look of the time.
Now I guess I should get my old clothes, slightly shred them, attach a
bunch of junk and get with the program. I can’t change the part in my
hair because it’s the only way I remember right from left.
Hale Returns to Make Music
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
It could be said that Steve Wynn was still “wet
behind the ears” with his 5% minority stake
in the Frontier in 1970 when teenager Renee Hale
headlined the casino’s lounge. Although Wynn crashed decades later,
good fortune lay before each.
For Hale, she followed an enriching path that fate prescribed for her
despite veering her away from those beloved footlights. She maintained
her “chops” with song-or-two guest appearances at local venues, all the
time responding to opportunities that destiny provided, building several
successful hospitality, convention and entertainment-based businesses.
She now returns to star in her own show at the Italian American Club
on October 14.
Hale’s career, unbeknownst to her, began as a pre-teen in Dick Blake’s
dance studio. Television commercial work in her Cleveland hometown
led to an offer from bandleader Ray Anthony (famous for Bunny Hop,
Hokey Pokey and the theme to Dragnet) to join him onstage in Las
Vegas as a member of his backup singers, The Bookends. “I packed a
car like The Beverly Hillbillies,” Hale says, and headed west.
During those Golden Vegas Years, Hale became a familiar face in the
legendary Vegas lounges, supper clubs and showrooms including Bally’s,
Desert Inn and Sands. Destiny intervened when Rossi Ralenkotter,
former CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau and often
credited for helping establish Las Vegas as a convention juggernaut,
enlisted Hale and her band to take to the road, representing the town to
travel agents and convention planners.
Renee Hale, then & now
“You can start booking rooms and conventions,” Ralenkotter
explained. Those cross-the-country tours spawned Hale’s enormously
successful event planning business, Creative Concepts. The company
provides a full array of services including travel, hotels, entertainment
and convention and meeting facilities.
Hale’s latest entrepreneurial venture, Creative Life Celebrations,
evolved from honoring her mother’s final wishes to host a last, joyous
party.
Talented friends joining Hale on stage October 14 will be Rita Lim,
the team of Jay Ramsey and Jerry Brown, singer/dancer Jay Joseph and
Evan Fonfa. The tie that binds Ramsey and Hale is Elvis who recorded
Ramsey’s music and Renee who dated The King.
Beauty Show was Beautiful!
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
One of the best things about working in the
beauty industry is attending the beauty
shows for a hands-on experience of the latest and
greatest products. This year’s CosmoProf was no exception!
Starting with face masks, there was something for everyone. Peel
off, magnetic, pore-shrinking, anti-aging, they had it all! Some of my
favorites were by a company called 7th Heaven. They have a huge
selection of peel off masks that I love, especially one called the Passion
Peel. Their line is carried online at my7thheaven.com, as well as
Walmart.
For feet, hands and body care, I found a great company called TS
Cosmetic Lab! They have many different fun scents and products, but
my favorite was the lavender sugar scrub and massage cream. For their
full line and locations, check out TSCosmetic.com.
And of course, since I love lip products, there’s a Canadian company
called Ton Cosmetics. It was started by two sisters and they offer very
reasonable shipping fees for their lipsticks.
What’s fun and different about these is that you take a short test online
to determine the best color match for you. Once that’s determined,
you can choose from various colors for your skin tone. Their site is
toncosmetics.com.
For a special skin care line, I met a wonderful dermatologist named
Dr. Rogers that developed her own products after failing to find
anything on the market that met all of her requirements. Her line
9629_NVHL_VegasVoiceAd.pdf 1 9/13/18 12:10 PM
has been recognized in major magazines and her healing balm is
getting great results! To learn more about her and the products, visit
doctorrogers.com.
Finally, hair! I watched a demo under a microscope of a hair strand
treated with a product called Nano DryFix and it certainly impressed
me! I have since been using the shampoo, leave-in conditioner, and
hair mask treatment.
As many of you know, I tend to be a drug store shopper and while this
line is more expensive than my usual go-to products, a little goes a long
way and if I was going to just purchase one of these products, it would
be the leave-in conditioner called DryFix Micro Therapy Treatment. To
learn more about their products, visit researchinbeauty.com.
J.D. Power and Associates:
What Are These Awards?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
You see the name in advertising, hear about
the studies on TV commercials, and might
even have filled out a long survey for this company when you bought
your last new car. Who the heck is J.D. Power and Associates, and do all
these awards really mean anything?
J.D. Power is a global marketing firm that focuses on rating customer
experiences with everything from automobiles to healthcare. It gets its
information via surveys filled out by those who have purchased goods or
services, and then rates the products based on those experiences.
While J.D. Power and Associates covers many different industries,
let’s just talk about what it does for the automotive spectrum. Contrary
to popular belief, J.D. Power does not allow companies to “buy”
awards. It makes its money by selling the results of the surveys to the
manufacturers, which in turn helps the companies improve.
Three of the biggest J.D. Power awards are IQS, or Initial Quality
Study, Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), and APEAL (Automotive
Performance, Execution, and Layout). The IQS measures the first 90
days of vehicle ownership and uses it as a prediction for long-term
durability. It focuses on over 230 problems, organized into eight
categories, such as exterior, driving experience, and infotainment.
The Dependability Study contacts owners of three-year-old vehicles,
and again focuses on specific vehicle features and if they are experiencing
any problems. For the APEAL Study, the goal is to examine how newvehicle
owners feel about the design, content, layout, and performance
of their vehicle after 60 days, and it covers 10 specific categories.
While it’s true that for IQS and APEAL the owners are still in the
honeymoon phase with their vehicles, you might want to give more
weight to the Dependability study. Although all three should give you a
good idea of the quality and features for each product, it is still up to you
to do your homework to see which vehicle is right for you.
Insurance Telematics
By: Jim Valkenburg / Insurance Insight
You’ve probably all seen Progressive’s
commercial with “Flo” showing something
called a Snapshot device to put in your car which
might save you premium dollars. That device –
a telematics device is also called a car insurance tracker, safe driving
app or car insurance monitoring device by other companies.
You install it in your vehicle so it can track different aspects of your
driving habits which, in turn, may (or may not) lower your premiums.
There are several factors companies track but four of the major ones
are: (1) time of day you drive, (2) weekly, monthly or annual miles, (3)
quick acceleration and (4) hard braking. When I owned my agency, we
did not encourage clients who worked the graveyard shift to accept
these devices because they often drove between, say, 11:00 pm - 4:00
am. I also discouraged anyone driving 12-15,000 miles/year or more.
Several insurance companies are offering their insured a chance to
save valuable premium dollars with telematics. How does it work?
Well, you often get a discount immediately on your new policy when
you agree to use the device. After a period of time (typically 90 days
– 6 months), your insurance company analyzes the data based on
their parameters of your driving habits and, hopefully, receive another
discount.
There are several benefits of using a telematics device. First, you most
likely become a safer driver. Just knowing your habits are being tracked
can make you more aware. You probably adjust your quick acceleration
and hard stops and that can also lead to better fuel economy.
One of the biggest downsides to telematics is privacy concerns.
Consumers want to know what is being tracked and who has access
to it. Consumers also feel that at some point the data may be used to
increase their premium.
If your company offers you the opportunity to save money on your
auto insurance, be sure to do your own analysis.
Saying Goodbye
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
To all my loyal readers (and I thank you) and
to those who are new to my column, you
know that I write about my memories of growing
up in Hollywood, being a child actress and my experiences of working
on various movies/TV shows with various actors.
This month I’d like to write about a different experience. Please
indulge me as I share this story.
I’m sure you are aware that I am an animal lover and have had pets
my whole life. Along with having pets, there sadly comes the time when
they get old or sick and have to be euthanized.
For those who have pets, I know you will agree that they are part of
our “family.” Saying goodbye to them is devastating.
Sadly, I had to put my little rescue “Reggie” down. He was a little
mixed Terrier who had seizures his whole life and was quite the
character. I actually think he had a sense of humor.
He lived to be 17 (for which I’m very grateful) but in the end, he
could no longer walk and was starting to fail. I knew the time was
drawing near for him to go to the Rainbow Bridge, but it’s never easy
to make that decision.
Knowing that the drive there, and what you are about to do, and
then, the long drive home with them no longer beside you has always
been a heart wrenching moment.
I go to a wonderful Veterinarian Hospital called “Legacy” and I love
my wonderful vet, Dr. Terry Muratore. Dr. M. has always treated my
pets with love and kindness and
has kept them healthy for a
very long time.
What I didn’t know is that
Dr. M. has another wonderful
vet named Dr. Toby Goldman.
Dr. Goldman performs
animal hospice and “in home
euthanasia.”
I decided to do that for my
Reggie, and I realize that there
are many people who aren’t
aware of that service.
Photo Credit: Courtesy of Linda Q
Photography
I now know that it is the ONLY way to do it. Yes, it’s still hard, but it
was so peaceful.
I had candles burning, soft music playing, and Reggie was in his
own bed, in his own surroundings with his “brothers” and “sister” and
his “mom” right beside him. There were no bright lights, other dogs
barking or strangers here.
It was most peaceful and comforting and was as if he just drifted off
to sleep. Dr. Toby (as he goes by) was kind and caring. He explained
everything to me and I felt a warmth that exuded from him.
For those who have pets, I pray it will be a long time before you have
to make that decision. But when you do, I truly hope you will contact
Dr. Toby. He has a heart full of love and compassion.
Although, of course, I cried my eyes out, I can say that it was the most
comforting, kindest, and gentlest way that I’ve had to say good-bye
to one of my little furry ones. Dr. Toby can be reached at: TheLapofLove.
com or at 702/703-9590.
Rest in peace my little Reggie. You will forever be in my heart.
Until next time, remember to always cherish the everyday moments.
2019 Legislation - Lobby Time Again
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
It looks like I will be heading to Carson City
this year wearing running shoes rather
than high heels and I’m not thinking of my
knee injury. Looking at the list of “must tackle issues” this upcoming
session, publisher Dan and I will be earning every dime we DON’T
make as non-paid lobbyist concerning readers’ issues.
Below are our initial items. You agree?
Nanny Cams: We heard so many heart-breaking family stories
during our guardianship presentations about the mistreatment of
seniors in nursing homes and other facilities. With heart-breaking
photographs concerning “accidents” we talked to some legislators
about the installation of a “nanny-cam.”
Although privacy seemed to be a concern, we believe that if consent
is given by the family of the person occupying the room, for the safety
of their loved one, that should suffice.
Supported Decision Making: This system is already being used
in several states and, simply put, a person with early on-set dementia
can opt for someone they trust to be named as their “Supported
Decision Maker.”
This is a person who can assist them is writing checks, paying bills,
purchasing any large items, making any big decision for which they
might need help but don’t need to have a guardian or be removed
from their home. It is meant to be a less restrictive way to help an aging
senior without taking away any of their rights, as guardianship
does.
Death with Dignity: This is the topic that The Vegas Voice surveyed
our readers over the last few months. As many of you may know, this
is a very emotional issue with me and something I feel strongly about.
Dan thought we would get blasted out of the water for supporting
such a bill, however, with thanks to all who took the time to respond; the
favorable responses were over 97%. Suffice to say, we will be backing
this bill.
Property Taxes: In the last legislature SJR 14 passed with all
Democrats and no Republicans supporting it. If this becomes law, it
would remove the 3% and 8% property cap we have now on our homes.
As seniors, I’m sure you will agree we must keep the cap as it is.
SJR 14 must pass again in 2019, then go to a vote of the people in
2020. We will be working closely with our former columnist Knight
Allen on this issue. Knight is our eyes and ears (and expert) in these
matters and we will rely on Knight for his tremendous assistance.
Homeowners Associations
By: Judy Polumbaum / Our View
Something like half of Las Vegas
Valley residents live in what Nevada
endearingly calls “common-interest
communities.” Known to most as homeowners’ associations, or
unit-owners’ associations, or condominium associations. Whose
residents may or may not have much in common, other than
living in the same neighborhood or building with obligations to
pay for certain shared costs.
As of mid-2018, 3,258 such associations were recorded
statewide, accounting for a total of 541,939 units. Beyond costs
of annual registration and other assorted fees, each of these
associations pays state government $4.25 per unit per year.
That’s more than $2.3 million going into state coffers for the
current year. With nearly two-thirds of the state’s population
concentrated in Clark County, that’s where the biggest chunk
comes from.
Presumably, the money comes back to unit owners and dwellers
in the form of state services. Ironic, because the way many of us
live originated from a movement to privatize public services.
Still, the state purportedly cares about us, through the Common-
Interest Communities (CIC) Program of the Real Estate Division
of the Nevada Department of Business and Industry.
Among other things, the CIC Program has an office that fields
complaints about homeowner association boards and managers.
This office, headed by a congenial college football hall of famer,
received 246 complaints during the first half of this year.
Some fade away, get resolved, or go to mediation, others go
before an appointed commission, and a few may end up in court.
Details of nearly all complaints remain confidential, although
occasionally commission hearings lead to public disciplinary
actions.
You can guess what these cases are about: Nepotism,
mishandling of money, incompetence, and the like.
We have begun to look further into this system, and would be
glad to hear about any experiences, good or bad, that you may
have with the CIC Program. Meanwhile, even as you anticipate
important votes to select civic representatives this November,
you might want to pay attention when elections for pseudogovernmental
positions roll around as well.
It seems several types of people run for HOA executive boards.
Let’s hope most are altruistic folks who truly care about keeping
their neighborhoods happy, healthy, and honest.
Some (you know the type) seek more of a sense of control over
community decisions and resources. What boards don’t need are
members who direct business to their friends and relatives.
Judy is a professor emerita of journalism and a recent transplant
to Las Vegas from the Midwest.
Democrats in Action
By: Howard Beckerman /Nevada Democrats
It’s time to put NEVADA FIRST!
Early voting is only days away. Every one of
us has the opportunity to make our voices heard
in this election.
You can multiply your voice by reminding all your friends and
neighbors to vote. When we get out and vote Nevada wins!
Steve Sisolak for Governor: Steve pledges to become the “Education
Governor.” His opponent wants to gut the funding that goes to our
schools. Steve’s opponent only moved to Nevada seven years ago, while
Steve has dedicated his career in helping Nevada’s citizens.
Jacky Rosen for Senate, Susie Lee for Congressional 3, Steve Horsford
for Congressional 4: We need these 3 to go and fight in Washington for
the interests of Nevada, and especially our seniors.
Their opponents want to gut Medicare and Social Security. Their
opponents also want to give additional tax breaks to big corporations.
Jacky, Susie, and Steve have pledged to put seniors first by fighting for
lower prescription drug prices for all Americans so that you don’t have
to go to Canada or Mexico where the prices are lower.
State Senate: Anthem - Julie Pazina; Sienna - Melanie Scheible. After
the ugly recalls we need people who will move our state forward instead
of wasting taxpayer money.
State Assembly: Anthem - Kristee Watson; Summerlin - Shea Backus.
These two candidates have pledged to do everything they can to protect
senior citizens.
Judges: Most people do not follow the Judicial races and many people
email me at the last minute asking who to vote for. The Judges who
stand out for their allegiance to the rule of law are Judge Elissa Cadish
for Nevada Supreme Court and Judge Mark Bailus for District Court.
Both of these judges deserve bi-partisan support for the experience,
fairness, and knowledge of the law.
An important, yet unheralded position is for State Treasurer:
Catherine Byrne will be our best “watchdog” over Nevada’s finances.
Don’t forget to also cast your vote “down ballot” for Lynn Goya for
County Clerk, Rob Telles for Public Administrator and Briana Johnson
for Assessor.
Howard Beckerman serves on the Nevada State Democratic Central
Committee, the Clark County Central Committee, and is Vice President
of the Red Rock Democratic Club. He has been active in the political
scene for over 40 years.
The Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher
By: Victoria Seaman / Victoria’s Corner
On, Wednesday, November 7th we will wake
up to one of two futures. Which one will
depend on the choices we make.
Will it be a bright future with the Republicans keeping control of
both the House and Senate and keeping President Trump’s America
First Agenda rolling forward - an agenda that has seen record setting
economic activity at home; record low unemployment; historic foreign
policy successes in North Korea, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the
appointment of strong constitutional judges to all levels of the court?
Or will it be a future where the Democrats take control of Congress
and slam the brakes on this economy by shutting down everything
President Trump tries to accomplish?
The choice is ours.
If we stay home and don’t vote, they win and the country loses. But
if we turn out and vote for Dean Heller and the Republican candidates
for Congress, the country wins and we will continue keeping America
great.
That same morning, there will also be two possible futures for
Nevada.
Steve Sisolak’s Nevada, which will follow California’s path to
destruction - higher taxes, bigger government, sanctuary cities, gun
control, failing schools, and extreme social and environmental policies.
Or Adam Laxalt’s future for Nevada - one of low taxes, limited
government, school choice and the freedoms and liberties we cherish
in Nevada.
Once again, the choice is ours. Staying home and not voting for
Republicans at the State and local levels and the future will ensure a
Steve Sisolak Nevada.
That’s why I am asking all my fellow Republicans to not just simply
show up and vote, but to take your friends and family with you. Talk
to your neighbors about what’s at stake. Spend a few hours a week
volunteering for the Republican ticket. Write a check if you can, to help
push our team across the finish line.
I have no doubt if we all work hard together, the future we wake up
to November 7th will most certainly be bright.
Who Said It?
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
“
Political parties serve to organize faction,
to give it an artificial and extraordinary
force; to put, in the place of the delegated
will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful
and enterprising minority of the community resulting in illconcerted
and incongruous projects…they are likely to become
potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled
men (and women) will be
enabled to subvert the
power of the people and to
usurp for themselves the
Chowtime
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
There’s an old saying that an army travels
on its stomach; which really means, that
second only to ammunition, food and water are
the two most vital commodities for a military unit. With Thanksgiving
just around the corner, here’s some military chowtime history:
The first U.S. soldier ration (during the Revolutionary War) consisted
of enough food to feed a man for one day. It was mostly beef, peas,
and rice. During the Civil War, the military moved toward canned
goods. Later, self-contained kits were issued as a whole ration and
contained canned meat, bread, coffee, sugar and salt.
During the First World War, canned meats were replaced with
lightweight preserved meats (salted or dried) to allow more rations to
be carried by foot soldiers. During World War II, a number of new field
rations were introduced.
The K-ration then became popular. It was an individual daily combat
food ration originally for mobile forces.
As it was based on an emergency ration, the K-ration provided
roughly 800–1,200 calories fewer than was required by highly active
men. Malnutrition became evident with so few calories.
Cost-cutting measures by Quartermaster Command officials during
the latter part of World War II and the Korean War again saw the
predominance of heavy canned C rations issued to troops, regardless of
operating environment or mission.
Introduced in 1938 (and refined
in 1940, 1943/1944 and 1945),
it was significantly heavier, with
less variety in meals, but most
importantly had more calories.
C-Rations were individually
canned, pre-cooked, wet rations.
They were intended to be issued to
U.S. military land forces when fresh food A-rations (food prepared in
mess halls or field kitchens) was not possible, or not available.
The C-Ration was replaced in 1958 with the Meal Combat Individual
(MCI). Although officially a new ration, the MCI was derived from,
and very similar to the original C-Ration, and continued to be called
“C-Rations” by American troops throughout its production life (1958–
1980).
Today the Meal, Ready-to-Eat; commonly known as the MRE is a
self-contained, individual field ration in lightweight packaging for
service members to use in combat or other field conditions.
Can you remember what C-Ration unit you had on Thanksgiving in
a war zone?
Impoverished by Medicaid
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
A brother and sister came to my office. Their
mom had passed years earlier and dad, dying from
Parkinson’s disease, was entering hospice. He had
been in a skilled nursing facility for the last ten years.
The two kids had worked extra jobs to keep dad’s house, hoping for him
to return home one day. Worst case the kids figured, when dad died they
could recover their funds by selling the house.
Unfortunately Medicaid has changed and went from being a benefit to
a loan. Every dollar spent by Medicaid on you is tracked and when you
die, Medicaid expects to be paid back from your Estate.
In addition, the rules to qualify for Medicaid changed so that instead
of 200,000 people on Medicaid in Nevada, we now have over 600,000.
In effect, while reducing the Estate Tax, they created a huge hidden tax,
without politicians calling it a tax, simply a “recovery” so more people
can benefit from the program.
I had to explain to the brother and sister that Medicaid was no longer
a benefit, but a loan. In their case, dad was in a skilled nursing facility -
$8,000 a month (average cost in Nevada), 12 months a year, $96,000 for
10 years or $960,000.
End result, dad’s home was sold to pay Medicaid back. The kids got no
inheritance and had lost years of work.
It should surprise no one that when the Federal Government raised the
Federal Estate Tax threshold to 11.2 million dollars appearing to reduce
their supply of our money, Congress had already found a new source of
funds by stealing the life savings of our seniors. The method for capturing
these funds - changing Medicaid.
While most people can afford the cost of assisted living for a spouse,
few people can afford the $8,000 monthly cost of a skilled nursing facility.
In order to qualify for Medicaid assistance, a single person is allowed to
keep $2,000 in assets, and if both spouses need assistance the amount
increases to $3,000.
If you can’t pay the $8,000 a month, you’ll be forced to reduce your
life savings to impoverishment levels and have no safety net in order to
receive Medicaid’s help. There is a better way.
Contacting an Elder law attorney and planning for Medicaid as part of
your estate plan now can save financial and emotional heartache for you
and your family. Failing to plan is planning to fail.
I urge you to not let this happen to you and your family. Protect yourself
and find an elder law attorney to speak with today.
Zumba Training
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
survived a full week of Zumba trainings and
I workshops in Orlando during the end of July.
How in the world did I keep my energy up?
Although this was my 11th year attending the week long convention,
as I get older, my thoughts turn to how to keep my energy level going
and to “recharge my batteries.”
I have followed this solution - a great breakfast with black coffee,
protein, fruit and carbs. Yes, carbs! Those who eliminate carbs from
your diet are doing yourself a harmful dis-service. You really need carbs
as a “building block” to your system.
The breakfast kept me going throughout the mornings and then
a sandwich and/or salad at lunch. A full dinner with meat or fish,
vegetables and more carbs. In between, snacks included fruit or protein
bars. And yes, lots of WATER!
I found my energy level persisted throughout the week, even though
I was burning several hundreds and thousands of calories. I also admit
that I did indulge in an alcoholic beverage once in a while! After all, I
burned off the calories, so I deserved a “treat!”
I did notice certain instructors’ energy levels diminish toward the
end of the week, but they had not learned to pace themselves and
especially eat nutritionally.
Getting plenty of sleep also helps. Lack of sleep contributes to weight
gain. Also try not to eat too late in the evening. You need to give your
digestive system enough time to use up those calories before sleeping.
I found myself eating too late in the evening while I was at another
job. Coming home hungry, I was tempted to grab something “quick.”
I now take the time to eat something earlier in the day to suppress the
hunger that I experienced at night. Drinking a hot cup of chamomile
tea helped to make me sleepy, as well as fill me up before bedtime.
When What You Don’t Know Can
Hurt You - Part II
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
plant needs a certain environment to be
A healthy. Given that healthy environment,
it prospers and blossoms. Put that same plant in an unhealthy
environment and it will wither and eventually die.
The cells of your body behave in the same way. Their environment,
known as the extracellular matrix (ECM), has an electrical potential
that must stay within certain parameters to keep your cells healthy.
In medical issues such as acute inflammation, the electrical potential
is too high and must be decreased to help reduce the inflammation. If
you were to increase the electrical potential instead, you can exacerbate
the inflammation.
In chronic degenerative conditions where cells are working less
efficiently, the electrical potential of the ECM has been decreased. Here it
must be increased to help the cells function efficiently and effectively. If
you were to decreases the electrical potential in this case, you can make
the patient worse, because now, you have made the affected cells work
even less efficiently.
What you have just read is some of the biophysics of how acupuncture
works.
Research has demonstrated that any time you insert a needle through
the skin, you create a depolarization event in the ECM and affect its
electrical potential throughout the body. Students trained in acupuncture
go through years of training to make sure they can properly diagnose
the state of the ECM and then treat it.
Physical therapists doing dry needling, a technique similar to
acupuncture, have no minimal requirement for training. The issue of
the electrical potential is never even addressed.
The issue was addressed to the Nevada State Physical Therapy Board
in July and a book on the medical research supporting this was supplied.
The Board was asked to have an expert review the information as a
means to help keep the public safe.
A member of the committee informed me that they are continuing to
push through legislature for physical therapists to do dry needling with
no minimal standard for training. Is it not their responsibility to make
sure that medically they are doing no harm?
Comprehensive Care
By: James J. White, D.D.S. / Your Dentist
have lost count of the number of times that
I I heard a person speak about seeing their
health care provider and that the doctor spent
only three to five minutes with them.
Indeed, most of us go to a physician only when something is
bothering us. The medical visit was scheduled to address that concern.
It is not a diagnostic visit, but rather a problem focused appointment.
Dentistry, as most health care services, is just the same. A person often
seeks care at a dental office only because there is a problem.
The emergency is addressed until the next time. Dentists refer to this
as piece-meal dentistry. It rarely solves the cause of the problems, but
rather treats them symptomatically.
Comprehensive care, on the other hand, is the solution to emergency
dentistry and always results in comfort, function, aesthetics and longterm
health and stability. Comprehensive care is how a dentist can
preserve a patient’s teeth for a life time.
When seeing a new patient (non-emergency), the dentist should
complete a comprehensive oral physical - not a 3 minute “look
see.” The review should include the jaw joints, muscles, functional
movements, bite balance/imbalance, wear, cancer screen, gum health,
chart current fillings, crowns, x-rays, sometimes models with facebow,
review of health history and medicines and examine teeth for decays.
The information from the comprehensive oral physical, along with
x-rays and study models (if needed) will allow your dentist to address
any and all
problems that are
discovered and
to be able to tell
you “why” and
“how” to correct
them. With
information from
a comprehensive
oral physical,
the dentist can
present what
the best care to
solve a particular
problem should
be.
We have a professional and moral obligation to tell the patient the
best, not the quickest or cheapest, solution. Having said this, I also need
to add that it is the patient’s responsibility to honestly communicate
with their dental practitioner.
If one cannot afford the finest treatment presented, tell your dentist
and ask if there is an alternative, less-costly option. A compromise in
treatment selection is not a sin. Just remember that if one is paying for
a Honda, one cannot expect it to be equal to a Mercedes.
Good dentistry is never expensive, but cheap dentistry will end up
costing patients a fortune.
Tired of wearing dentures that
don’t stay in place, won’t chew food
well or cause mouth sores from time to time?
Make an investment in yourself!
What would it be worth not to have dentures anymore?
Eat and chew ANYTHING you want. Laugh out loud
without the fear of your teeth falling.
Corn on the cob? Stop remembering “when.”
Get permanent teeth in one day.
Is Your Medicare Still Working For You?
When you turned 65, you, like many other Southern Nevada
Seniors, signed up for Medicare. Odds are, you were one of
the thousands who signed up for traditional Medicare, also known as
Medicare Part A and B.
“At 65, most Seniors are still active and relatively healthy,” notes
Dr. Tracy J. Wakefield, President of P3 Medical Group. “They like the
flexibility to see any provider that takes Medicare, which is really handy
when retirees travel frequently. Medication costs are manageable and,
in most cases, transportation is not an issue.”
After 5-10 years, though, most Seniors’ needs will have changed.
Chronic conditions like diabetes, heart and kidney disease and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) crop up, requiring more visits
to specialists and more medications. Getting around town may also be
more challenging.
The good news is that Seniors can change their coverage during
Medicare Open Enrollment each year. Beginning October 15, they can
elect to continue in their traditional Medicare plan or make a switch to
a Medicare Advantage plan.
Depending on your situation, Medicare Advantage plans can offer
all the benefits of traditional Medicare coverage along with better
prescription coverage, dental and vision benefits and transportation
assistance. In some cases, the monthly premiums and co-pays may
also be lower. Some plans may have a higher monthly premium than
traditional Medicare, however, participants save over the course of the
year because of better coverage.
“The best part of Medicare Advantage is the difference in care,”
according to Wakefield. “Seniors
who choose Medicare Advantage
plans with P3 in their network are
assessed at the beginning of the
year. We put their doctor in charge of their care and surround them
with a care team focused on helping them reach and maintain their
wellness goals.”
P3 Nevada, with more than 200 primary care providers and 800
specialists, is the exclusive network for Hometown Health’s Senior Care
Plus Medicare Advantage and Select Health Advantage plans.
It’s important for anyone over 65 to assess how their needs have
changed and update their Medicare coverage between October 15 and
December 7. Seniors can learn more by contacting their Medicare
Advantage broker, by calling P3 (702) 333-4700 or visiting P3NV.org.
October 7, 1849
By: John Beilun / Time Traveler
The day was dark and gloomy. At 4 pm a
handful of people hovered over a coffin so
cheap that it was no better than a box.
The reverend in attendance decided that the meager crowd didn’t
warrant a sermon. So, he simply crossed himself and said a brief prayer.
Within three minutes the mourners had disbursed.
Four days earlier the deceased was discovered lying on a wooden
bench outside a saloon in Baltimore. He was disheveled and unwashed,
attired in filthy clothing which were obviously not his own.
No one knows how he came to be in such a state. Based on the
lifestyle attributed to him by his detractors, it was assumed to be due to
alcohol and opiate abuse. His symptoms however, were more akin to
those exhibited in the final stages of rabies.
The unfortunate gentleman in question was only 40 - but showed
the wear and tear of a man much older. After being orphaned at two,
a merchant took him in only to abuse the poor lad with merciless
discipline.
At eighteen the now young man enlisted in the U. S. Army. After only
two years, he rose to the highest non-commissioned rank of Sergeant
Major of Artillery. Although a superb horseman and skillful with a
sword, the new cadet quickly grew weary of the Military Academy’s
regimen. And by intentionally refusing to follow orders, forced a court
martial.
Choosing a new career in the habitually financially unrewarding
field of literature, the disgraced former soldier settled in Baltimore.
Writing not only poetry and short stories, but also critical essays and
reviews, at the age of 22, Edgar Allen Poe had found his calling.
For the next eighteen years, Poe wrote for scores of newspapers
and magazines and excelled in such diverse genres as horror, science
fiction, gothic, romance, crime, comedy and satire. More importantly,
he inspired all subsequent writers and poets.
To say that Poe was the Mozart of literature would not be a stretch.
Sadly, like Amadeus, Edgar died a young, lonely and nearly bankrupt
man, also under mysterious circumstances.
October 7, 1849, the day Edgar Allen Poe passed away, is indeed a sad
moment in history. The “The Bells” would forever be silent. “The Tell-
Tale Heart” would never beat again.
Simply put – to quote “The Raven:” “Nevermore!”
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
October is one of the busiest months for
the Las Vegas gardener. The temperature
is getting milder and we can spend more time
outdoors without “melting away.”
I divide this month’s chores into two categories: Checking out the
landscape and then repairing and improving.
During early October, I suggest checking out the status of your
landscape and equipment. Now is the time to replace dead and damaged
plants and modify and repair your drip systems. The nurseries and
home centers will have fresh supplies of trees, bushes and plants ready
for you to plant (and in some cases, provide a feast for the rabbits!).
During this time, visually check out the drip systems “and repair
and expand” where needed because as your landscaping grows, the
irrigation needs to grow too! Be ready to add and/or reposition your
drips!
As we progress into the last weeks of October and the leaves on our
deciduous trees and bushes are falling, we can begin the annual fall
cleanup. With diminishing temperature and daylight, it is also time to
begin your heavy pruning.
We wait for this time so that any pruning will not stimulate new
growth that may be damaged by an early frost. Palm trees should be
pruned first since we want the remaining fronds to acclimate to the
cooler temperatures.
Roses should be pruned by removing at least half of the existing
stems and branches. This will stimulate greater growth in the Spring.
Do not prune fruit trees until they go dormant later in the season.
All additional plants (including cactus) could be pruned and shaped
as well.
As for Yucca and Agave - remove dead areas. Also, treat the soil
around any Agave plants with a systemic insecticide as well. During the
summer, the Agave weevil has laid eggs under the soil and these eggs
will hatch during the cooler months and the larvae will eat the roots of
these plant and kill these expensive plants!
Once we have completed these tasks we can relax - until next month!
Resuscitation
By: Heather Latimer / Helpful Hints
If you gave a Do Not Resuscitate statement
to your hospital, and included it in your will,
you may believe that situation is covered. Yet EMS
personnel responding to a 911 call to your home
have no access to those documents. If your condition warrants it, they
will promptly commence chest compressions and other life-sustaining
procedures.
To counteract that happening, caregiver Kay Mosley told me that a
Do Not Resuscitate Certificate is available that’s designed to be instantly
recognizable by EMS personnel. It’s easily obtainable and you can post
it in a highly visible spot where you live.
Here’s how:
1. Enter “Do Not Resuscitate” in your browser. Scroll down to
Southern Nevada Health District bearing the Nevada seal. You’ll find an
application form to print. Or request a “DNR Application” by telephone
– 702/759-1050.
2. The simple one-page form requires: (a) your name, address,
gender, birthdate, (b) either your signature or of your agent, (the
person with your power of attorney if you have one), (c) Taking the
completed form to your doctor for signature, (d) Mailing the form with
$5 check payable to Division of Public and Behavioral Health.
Most people place the certificate over their bed. However, the wording
on the certificate advises that if EMS personnel do not see the certificate,
or you’re unable to produce the wallet-card, they’ll immediately apply
standard resuscitation procedures.
Happy Adventures
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
When I started the Vegas Voyagers, I tried to
come up with a tag line for these monthly
articles. As much as I thought about this, the best
I could come up with to end my article was Happy Destinations. And I
have used this tag line for over 15 years.
I started to think about these two words. I suppose it’s not a bad
sentiment. But what does it mean?
Short answer; I don’t know. The word HAPPY is easy enough. I do
want everybody to be happy. Happy is a good thing.
But the word DESTINATIONS? I guess what I was trying to say in
those two words is that I want all Vegas Voyagers to be happy when they
go; when they travel - wherever that journey may take you.
HAPPY DESTINATIONS! However, I started thinking, is there a better
tag line I can use?
And while I was thinking about this new tag line possibility Arizona
Senator John McCain passed away. What does his passing have to do
with a new tag line for my monthly articles?
To say the least, Senator McCain lived a very interesting, adventurous
full life. The many retrospectives on his life made that very clear.
In reviewing his own life’s experience, Senator McCain explained,
“I’ve had an adventure-fill full life. I wouldn’t change a thing.” His
words left me with the impression that, in spite of some very tough
times, he loved everything about the life he lived and the adventures
he had.
With this in mind, I thought that all of us who are in our senior
years, if at all
possible, should
continue to seek
out adventure. It
might be “soft”
adventure, but
seek out adventure
nonetheless.
And that’s what
we’re are all about.
Offering Vegas
Voice readers the
opportunity to
participate in new
adventures. To go
Senator John McCain
to new places, you
many never have
visited. To travel with like-minded people and to continue to explore
for as long as you can.
While the tag line HAPPY DESTINATOIONS has served me well, and
I will miss it, the better sentiment going forward
is HAPPY ADVENTURES. Continue
to explore, continue to experience
and most of all, I hope for all of
you, continue to be happy.
HAPPY ADVENTURES to all.
New Device Stops a Cold Before it Starts
By: Doug Cornell / To Your Health
New research shows you can
stop a cold in its tracks if you
take one simple step with a new device when you
first feel a cold coming on.
Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose.
Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early,
they spread in your airways and cause misery.
But scientists have found a
quick way to kill a virus. Touch it
with copper. Researchers at labs
and universities agree, copper is
“antimicrobial.” It kills microbes,
such as viruses and bacteria, just
by touch.
That’s why ancient Greeks and
Egyptians used copper to purify
water and heal wounds. They
didn’t know about viruses and
bacteria, but now we do.
Scientists say the high conductance of copper
disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell
and destroys the cell in seconds.
Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) show germs die fast on copper. So some
hospitals tried copper for touch surfaces like faucets
and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA
and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.
The strong scientific evidence gave inventor
Doug Cornell an idea. When he felt a cold coming
on he fashioned a smooth copper probe and
rubbed it gently in his nose for 60 seconds.
“It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold went
away completely.” It worked again every time he
felt a cold coming on and he hasn’t had a cold
since.
He asked relatives and friends to try it. They
said it worked for them, too, so he patented CopperZap
and put it on the market.
Soon hundreds of people had tried it and given
feedback. Nearly 100% said the copper stops
colds if used within 3 hours after the first sign.
Even up to 2 days, if they still get the cold it is
milder than usual and they feel better.
Users wrote things like, “It stopped my cold
right away,” and “Is it supposed to work that fast?”
“What a wonderful thing,” wrote Physician’s
Assistant Julie. “No more colds for me!”
Pat McAllister, age 70, received one for Christmas
and called it “one of the best presents ever.
This little jewel really works.” Now thousands of
(paid advertisement)
users have simply stopped getting colds.
People often use CopperZap preventively.
Frequent flier Karen Gauci used to get colds after
crowded flights. Though skeptical, she tried it
several times a day on travel days for 2 months.
“Sixteen flights and not a sniffle!” she exclaimed.
Businesswoman Rosaleen says when people
are sick around her she uses CopperZap morning
New research: Copper stops colds if used early.
and night. “It saved me last holidays,” she said.
“The kids had colds going round and round, but
not me.”
Some users say it also helps with sinuses. Attorney
Donna Blight had a 2-day sinus headache.
When her CopperZap arrived, she tried it. “I am
shocked!” she said. “My head cleared, no more
headache, no more congestion.”
Some users say copper stops nighttime stuffiness
if used just before bed. One man said, “Best
sleep I’ve had in years.”
Copper may even stop flu if used early and for
several days. Lab technicians placed 25 million
live flu viruses on a CopperZap. No viruses were
found alive soon after.
Copper even kills deadly germs that have become
resistant to antibiotics. If you are near sick
people, a moment of handling it may keep serious
infection away from you and your loved ones. It
may even save a life.
The EPA says copper still works even when
tarnished. It kills hundreds of different disease
germs so it can prevent serious or even fatal
illness.
CopperZap is made in the U.S. of pure copper.
It has a 90-day full money back guarantee when
used as directed to stop a cold. It is $69.95. Get
Nothing Like a
Ghost Story
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Nearly everyone enjoys a ghost story, and the
“haunted” Goldfield Hotel in Goldfield,
Nevada offers one. Goldfield’s historical society began hosting ghost
tours inside the hotel in 2001; offering no guarantee anything
supernatural will happen during your tour, although strange things
have occurred in the past.
The hotel gained fame in 2001 as one of the “Scariest Places on
Earth” when the Fox network filmed an episode there.
It’s believed Room 109 is haunted by a prostitute named Elizabeth
who, while pregnant, was chained to the room’s radiator by the original
hotel’s owner, George Winfield. After giving birth, Winfield left Elizabeth
to die in that room.
Many feel her presence and sometimes an infant is heard crying.
Other ghosts have been seen in the halls and lobby. It is believed that
the hotel serves as a portal to the other world.
Founded in 1902, Goldfield has a rich history. After gold was
discovered, it quickly grew. In 1906, Goldfield produced $11 million in
gold and gained nationwide fame.
“A luxury liner on a sea of sand,” the four-story Goldfield Hotel was
built at a cost of $500,000.00 in 1908. It was known as “The Gem in
the Desert.”
The hotel had a gold plated ceiling, mahogany paneling and was the
second hotel in the west to have an electric elevator. It was the finest
hotel between Denver and San Francisco.
Meals were “exquisite European cuisine,” featuring oysters, quail
and squid. Guests arrived for dinner formally dressed in black tie and
ball gowns.
The hotel’s front brick facing was delivered by the US Post Office
because it would have cost more to deliver by rail or wagon. The closed
and ill-fated hotel remains the most prominent symbol of Goldfield’s
former glory.
Goldfield, once Nevada’s largest city is a ghost of its former self, but
still boosts having the best array of original buildings in the west. It
offers a glimpse into the
lifestyle of a true turn of the
century mining town.
“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
Is It Worth It To Buy A Home That Needs Repairs?
The answer differs depending on the type of repairs, the neighborhood and more.
Are the repairs only cosmetic?
Cosmetic repairs include items like painting, changing the flooring or installing new cabinetry. If
the home you’re interested in only needs cosmetic repairs, it may be worth the money because
you’ll get to customize the home to your tastes, and the Seller might be offering a discount
because they know the house needs a "face lift".
What does the inspection report say?
Always get a professional inspection before you buy. The inspection report could alert you to
problems that the Seller either doesn’t know about or didn't think to tell you about. If the
inspection report mentions foundation issues or that the HVAC system needs replacing, this may
be a bigger project than you are prepared for.
What will the ROI be for the needed repairs?
It’s worth it to take on some minor home repair projects for a house in the right location. Bringing
the home up to par for the neighborhood is wise, just be careful not to over-improve. Keep in
mind how long you plan to own the home when contemplating improvements as well.
Do you have the time to devote to getting the repairs done?
Moving into a home that isn’t move-in ready could be stressful. Make sure that you will
have not only the funds but the TIME to deal with what needs to be done. You should be
prepared for loud noises and a little debris if you hire workers to assist you with the repairs as
well.
Are you getting the home for a great price?
One of the most important factors is the type of deal you’re getting on the home. If it’s not move
-in ready, what’s the incentive to do the repairs and updates yourself? If the Seller isn’t offering
an allowance for you to do the repairs or isn’t selling slightly below market to incentivize you,
what’s the point?
Look into a 203 (k) loan
If you find a home that you’re serious about but that requires minor (or major) repairs and you
don't have the extra cash needed to complete the repairs, look into financing your purchase
through HUD’s 203 (k) loan. This type of financing allows you to finance the purchase of the
home and the necessary improvements without having to seek multiple loans.
Call me today and I'll help you decide if a home that needs repairs may be a good option for
you. If you have questions about the home-buying (or home-selling) process, my team and I here
to guide you, every step of the way!
