“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
Is the Real Estate Market about to CRASH?
There’s been a lot of recession talk over the past couple of years,
which has caused some people to think we’re headed for a
repeat of what we saw back in 2008. But the latest projections
confirm why that isn’t going to happen.
April 2024
The overall economy is pretty good. Not fantastic, but better
than many are giving it credit for. There are a few economists
predicting a recession in the next year, but they are in the
minority. In fact, most experts don't believe there will be a
recession in the next 12 months. A major reason why is the
current unemployment rate. When you look at historical data, it’s
pretty clear that the unemployment rate today is still relatively
low.
Will the unemployment rate go up? Unfortunately, it probably
will, but most economists don't expect the unemployment rate to
get anywhere close to the rate that we saw when the market last
crashed (over 8%). Projections currently show that the
unemployment rate will continue to stay under the 75-year
average. Translation: well below the percentage of people who
would have to lose their jobs to cause enough foreclosures to
have a significant impact on the housing market.
Another factor that I see is that we are still "undersupplied" on
available housing inventory (there are more people who want to
buy than want to sell). For a crash to occur, the supply would
have to far exceed the demand, and there isn't anything
foreseeable that is going to make that happen. Current market
conditions are good, and we are enjoying an appreciating
market. That's GOOD news for both current and prospective
homeowners.
If you are thinking of selling your current home, or looking for a
home to buy, it's important to know the facts and your options.
Call me today to get the information you need.

Pleasing the PILL
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Do you want to come with me?” Immediately
(but luckily) I realized that my Rana asked me
a “trick question.”
Regular readers are well aware that The Vegas
Voice president, Rana Goodman is also my PILL
(partner in love & life). In our now nearly
dozen years in playing house, I have come to
understand that what my Ladylove says is “not
exactly” what she means.
As any caring male partner should know,
their better half does not always speak the same
language that men do. Snicker all you want,
but every woman reading this knows it’s true.
Rana had made a “most gentle, but you
better follow my suggestion” that I accompany
her to Costco.
Fortunately for me, Rana uttered the remark
after my morning coffee. And with the caffeine
reaching my brain before my mouth, yours truly gave the “correct”
response.
“Why of course. I would love to go with you! Actually, there’s no
other place where I would rather go - so long as I’m with you.”
Now I admit that the last sentence was gratuitous and perhaps even
“over-the-top” but I never know when I might need some extra credit.
For this publisher, it’s called: Happy Pill, it’s a Thrill!
Holding hands like teenagers, off we went.
As I have stated in prior articles, except during the football season, I
really have no hesitancy in “Driving Miss Goodman” whenever and
wherever she desired. However one of my unbreakable rules is that
despite her constant and continuous dismay and “look” (and no doubt,
men reading this know exactly what that means) once we enter any
store, I always walk 2 steps behind her.
Especially when she’s pushing a shopping cart. The reason? For my
protection and safety.
In counting just one of her numerous skills, Rana has the uncanny
(if not magical) ability to move left, go right or reverse course in an
instant. No kidding, she can stop, pivot and/or zoom on a dime.
More than once when holding her hand, my arm would go one
way while the rest of my body went another. Then like a drill sergeant
dealing with a new recruit, she would admonish me to “Keep up, keep
up” while immediately doing an about-face.
I’m telling you that if my NY Giants could be as agile, mobile and
quick as my Rana, we would be hosting Super Bowl parties every year.
So as I walked behind her (keeping my head on a swivel like a Secret
Service agent) I remained in awe as to how she can simultaneously
move in several directions – all at the same time.
And for additional extra, extra credit, I insisted on taking her out for
lunch. Those Costco hot dogs were delicious.
*In last month’s column, I complained about those unwanted
robocalls that everyone now receives on their cell phone. Wouldn’t you
know it, but when our Executive Director (and my Bronx brother) Bill
Caserta read my column, he immediately told me what I needed to do
to stop the madness.
The best part – it worked. And even I was able
to do it.
So as a “public service” if you have an
iPhone:
1. Go to Settings AND
2. Scroll down to “Phone” AND
3. Scroll down to “Silence Unknown
Callers” AND
4. Turn this feature on.
That’s it. Calls from unknown numbers will
be silenced, sent to voicemail and displayed on
the “Recent” list. Thank you Bill!
Sad News: I am very sad and sorry to advise
readers that one of our wonderful columnists,
Heather Latimer, passed away in February.
Her “Heather’s Self-Help Tips” was a regular
and popular feature since she began writing for us in May 2018.
She was a woman with style and class and I not always enjoyed her
columns but her insistence in submitting them way before deadline.
Heather was 97 years young. May she rest in peace.
From Loss to Purpose
By: Annoula Wylderich / Our Best Friends
In 2007, having arrived in Las Vegas just three
years prior, I lost my fiancé to cancer in the
middle of our wedding plans.
I knew very few people in the community, and
the housing bubble was about to explode, making selling my home
difficult. And the thought of returning to Cleveland winters, despite that
I had many friends back there, didn’t appeal to me. I was lost.
While struggling through my grief, I accidentally came upon an
article describing an act of horrific animal cruelty. The story stayed
with me, and I embarked upon research into animal welfare.
The more I read, the more shocked I became at the level of evil
perpetrated upon helpless beings. I connected with a variety of
organizations that were fighting the abuse and exploitation of animals,
which led to a sense of purpose and the reinvention of my life: I became
an animal advocate.
I eventually founded a grassroots organization, Animal Protection
Affiliates, and collaborate with local, national and global organizations
to help advance animal protection and fight cruelty via legislation,
ordinances, education and campaigns.
Animals are among our vulnerable populations. However, unlike
children, seniors, and veterans, they cannot ask for help and have far
fewer protections.
While animal advocacy may not be for everyone, anyone can take
small steps to help create a more humane society. The collective power
of baby boomers is transformative and can help change the world!
The path that I chose to take has certainly changed my world,
and helped me find fulfillment, purpose, and new friendships while
knowing that I am bringing relief and comfort to countless sentient
beings.
To those who may be struggling with a similar loss as mine, or are
feeling lonely or seeking a calling, please consider volunteering at a
local shelter or rescue. If you would like more information on how to
get involved in animal welfare, contact me at wylderich@cox.net.
former District Leader for the HSUS, and former State Director for
Wives vs. Man’s Best Friend
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Here are a “Baker’s Dozen” why men have dogs
and not wives!
1. The later you are, the more dogs are excited
to see you.
2. Dogs don’t notice if you call them by another
dog’s name.
3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
4. A dog’s parents never visit.
5. Dogs realize that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
6. You never have to wait for a dog; they’re ready to go 24 hours a day.
7. Dogs find you amusing when you’re drunk.
8. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing.
9. A dog will not wake you up at night and ask: “If I died, would you
get another dog?”
10. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and give them
away.
11. A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a
pervert.
12. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don’t get mad. They just
think it’s interesting.
13. Last, but not least, if a dog leaves, it won’t take half your stuff.
*A retired Sun City resident volunteers to entertain patients in assisted
living homes and hospitals. He visited one hospital in Summerlin and
brought along his portable keyboard.
After telling jokes and singing songs at patients’ bedsides, he said
farewell and, “I hope you get better.” One elderly lady replied, “I hope you
get better, too.”
And finally: The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.

Dennis The Menace
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
thought I’d write this month about a dear friend
I of mine - Jeannie Russell.
I’m sure you
will remember the TV series “Dennis
The Menace” which ran from 1959 -
1963 on CBS. Jeannie played the role
of “Margaret”, Dennis’s playmate. She
was the little girl with the horn-rimmed
glasses and pigtails.
Jeannie auditioned for the role and of
course, was hoping to get the part. In the
casting business, they have what is known
as a “call back.”
These are the actors who are narrowed
down as the producer’s favorites. Often you
will have a “call back” (more than once)
and have to “audition” again; sometimes
reading with the main star of the show.
This was a great, great role and there
were countless girls all vying for the part.
At her last call back, she (along with the others) had to read with Jay
North, who played the part of Dennis.
Jeannie always credits Jay with the reason she got picked because after
reading with her, he turned to the producers and said, “I like Jeannie!” It
was important that Dennis and Margaret had a connection working
together, so Jeannie got the part.
She probably would have anyway as Jeannie was perfect in the role but
having Jay on her side helped them make their final decision. To this day
and after all these years, she and Jay are
good friends.
Jeannie and I didn’t know each other as
children as I am 7 years older than her.
Over the years however, Jeannie and I met
at various autograph conventions.
I was impressed with her from the very
beginning. She is truly one of the nicest
people in the business and I feel blessed to
call her my friend.
We now do radio re-enactments
together and she too is an animal lover
like I am. Jeannie is also a very wellrespected
chiropractor.
I am grateful that I can now call her my
good friend.
Until next time, remember: A smile is
an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
What Time is it?
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
accidentally “sprang back” last month.
I “Spring forward” and “Fall back.” Sounds so
simple. But did anyone consider that it is also quite
easy to get them mixed up?
I confess that last month I accidentally set the clocks back. Then,
attempting to fix the error, I set them back again..
This situation does not come as a total surprise. After all, I’ve lost track
of how many times I have fed the dog twice the same evening. And it
doesn’t do any good to ask the dog if she’s already been fed since she
shakes her head “NO” no matter how many times I ask her.
If you’re anything like me, come each spring and fall you are shocked
to discover how many clocks you have. It seems like I always overlook a
timepiece (or two) stumbling across a forgotten clock weeks… or even
months later, thinking “I plumb forgot this clock out in the garage that’s
covered up with the towel I use to dry off the dog.”
The twice a year ritual also leads to a surprising revelation as to how
the time differs on each clock that we own. The difference in time can be
so extreme that it’s possible a clock in the kitchen is on standard time
while one in the basement shows the current time in Reykjavik, Iceland!
I must confess that I seldom get around to changing the clock in my
car. Mainly because I never seem to think of doing it until I’m strapped
into my seatbelt.
Then, in trying to reach the glovebox and scrounge up something to
use like a ballpoint pen, I nearly strangle myself. I’m not even sure that
those holes in the dashboard have anything at all to do with the clock.
Maybe poking one with the pen will result in all the car doors locking and
I won’t be able to get out.
So, I end up angrily tossing the pen, leaving the clock unchanged, and
figuring that’ll put me ahead of everyone else when the next time change
rolls around.
I better stop now so I can submit this article - which I calculate will be
either a week early or a week late.
When Public Utilities Become Bullies
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
When I was in my youth I was often referred to
as a “Spitfire” since I never ignored bullies
or people who talked down to me as if I was just a
female who knew nothing of the way things are done.
As an adult however, while in business for myself, one of the first
things I told my staff was that customer service
and friendly communication was one of the most
important things they were to do. Perhaps that’s
why the letter I received from NV Energy last
month “lit the fire” within me.
Paragraph two of the letter starts, “As you are
aware, you requested to opt-out of NV Energy’s
standard meter program”. (I don’t recall any
such request.)
“A non-standard meter was installed and
was subject to special rules and conditions. You
are responsible for paying all charges, rates and fees and must make
timely payments. Any customer who fails to make timely payments
twice in a twelve-month period is no longer eligible for service under
the NSMO rider.”
NV Energy goes on to advise that my monthly payments of “August
and September of 2023 were late and thus you do not qualify to
remain on the non-standard option.”
The problem with that statement is, being a creature of habit, I pay
my bills the day I receive them. My checks are dated 8/25 and 9/20 – the
same days that the NV Energy bills arrived in my mailbox.
The letter further stated that my “meter will now be exchanged for
a standard meter and my rates will be placed back on the rules of a
standard meter.”
The “crowning glory” came with the last
paragraph (after warning me to keep my gate
unlocked and my dog restrained). “If access is
impeded in any way, you will be in violation
of the tariff rules that govern electric service to
your home and your electric service may be
terminated until unrestricted access is restored.”
This above sentence was in bold and underlined.
I don’t know how those reading this would react
to that last sentence, but I took it as a threat to
disconnect my electricity.
I have been paying the power company in Las Vegas and Henderson
every month since I was 19 years old. Now, (apparently) thanks to the
USPS, two payments were perhaps a few days late, and NV Energy now
demanded to change out my meter last month.
Compounding this dilemma, there was no appointment time given.
Since my dog visits the backyard whenever “nature calls” and my gate
is always locked, unless Publisher Dan or I are home to allow the NV
employee access, there would be no entry
During this period, I also waited for the supervisor to call back as she
promised to do weeks ago. I really wanted her to explain why NV Energy
would threaten to turn off my power, but you and I know that call never
came and will never come.
By the way, NV Energy arrived without notice on March 19 th (not the
18 th ) but fortunately, I was home to open the gate, keep my dog out of the
yard and successfully had my meter changed.
I have no idea what the difference is between this newly installed
meter, but just based on customer service I guess I better line up
my candles.
Nobody’s Alone for a
Vegas Passover
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Later this month, Jews around the world will
celebrate Passover with a ritual feast, the Seder,
in remembrance of their liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt.
Last year, Beth Harpaz of New York’s Jewish newspaper, Forward, wrote,
“Inviting ‘strangers’ to Seders - individuals who have nowhere to go, and
individuals who may never have experienced a Seder before is part of
Jewish tradition.“ That tradition has long been embraced by our Vegas
Voice entertainment columnist Dianne and husband Burt.
Since arriving in Las Vegas 19 years ago, Davis’ has shared a
microphone and printer’s ink with an extensive list of the town’s high
profile celebrities and behind the scenes people who keep the gears
oiled. As “The Entertainment Capital of the World” Las Vegas attracts
hopefuls…both on-stage and behind-the-scenes…from around the
world. Holidays, Davis said, can be lonely for those people.
In 1970, with a 14-month old child and six months pregnant, a job
transfer found Dianne and Burt headed to Little Rock, Arkansas, knowing
no one in the area, “I felt someone’s warm arms wrap around me,” she
Love Will Always Win
By: Bruce Ewing / Having Faith
pring this year holds many of the holiest of
Sdays for so many faiths. The Islamic holiday of
Ramadan, the Christian observance of Lent into
the holidays of Holy Week and Easter, and the Jewish Remembrance of
the Passover all take place in March & April.
Thinking about these holidays has led me to reflect daily on the current
and often hateful state of our society - especially the rising tensions of
bigotry toward African-Americans, Jews, Asians and Women. I wonder,
“What could I do about any of these current day happenings?”
said of a Sedar invitation. “She gathered the ‘orphans.’”
As future job transfers took Dianne and Burt to Houston, Raleigh,
and other cities, the couple continued the tradition. In each city, “I kept
adding chairs to the table.”
The Davis’ eclectic group of guests takes turns reading passages from
the Haggadah, a booklet retelling the Egyptian exodus. “It isn’t a party,”
Davis said, but the blending of faiths and diverse personalities creates a
unique atmosphere of instant camaraderie.
In 1999, celebrity impersonator, John DiDomenico delighted Davis’
guests by reading the traditional Four Questions as a non-political
Donald Trump.
Rented tables and chairs fill what becomes a spacious dining hall and
guests arrive toting casseroles and salads to share. “Everyone is invited to
contribute.”
This year, the Davis’ expect as many as 60 for the Sedar. “Everyone is
welcome,” she said. “We’ll find a seat for them.”
And she plans to continue the tradition. “The holidays keep you
grounded.”
Dianne & Burt Davis 60 Years Together
April 2024
When I hear people speaking in hateful, bigoted ways, being complacent
is never the answer. But confronting in an aggressive manner will only
invite more of the same behavior.
In the past few years, I have witnessed and overheard horrible things
said about these groups. At times I felt speechless.
At times, I wanted to scream in confronting and exposing the
ignorance. However, what good could be accomplished with such an
extreme response?
As a Jesus-follower, I am often in awe of how He confronted tensions
with gentle questions. I’ve tried to do the same.
What has happened to our society that has allowed this sort of speech
and behavior to seem acceptable? What can we gently say to stand up
against it?
Bigotry comes from darkness. We must shine light, remembering that
even the smallest spark of light dispels such darkness.
In a recent class I am taking on Judaism (Secrets Of The Bible at OLLI),
I was encouraged by this thought: When being loving and inclusive
feels like an uphill battle, look to this Scripture: “Great waters cannot
extinguish the love, nor can rivers wash it away.” (Song Of Songs 8:7)
No matter what floods of hatred, bigotry or ignorance come toward us,
none can extinguish LOVE. LOVE will never be washed away.
This time of year is a time to look at all that is going on - all that feels
so antithetical to God’s purpose for us and know that LOVE will always
win.
Let’s do our best to answer all hatred with LOVE.
Stay Young at Heart
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
Do we have expiration dates? Are we supposed
to just accept aging?
Recently, two friends reminded me that life is
certainly about living it! My friends Marcus and
Len know the difference between just existing and being alive.
Here are their stories:
Marcus worked for the state of Minnesota for most of his adult life as a
social worker specialist and thrived in his job. He worked his way up the
ladder to a successful and comfortable life but decided it wasn’t enough.
As he approached his 50 th birthday, Marcus took a leap of faith, moved
to a new city, and embarked on a journey for a master’s degree.
14
April 2024
He knew the stresses it would put on his beautiful new family and
wife with school, a full-time job, and the unpaid intern hours that were
required, but he was convinced that his short-term sacrifices would pale
next to the long-term benefits. As he proudly approaches his graduation
he is reminded of that.
Len, a robust six-foot-five man with an impish glint in his eyes was at
the tender age of 92 when he stepped into my studio to record his second
album - his first in over 30 years. He joked about wanting to be the oldest
person to ever win a Grammy, and I didn’t wanna burst his bubble about
95-year-old Tony Bennet or 97-year-old Pinetop Perkins.
When he handed me his song list of great standards from Bennett,
Sinatra, Dean Martin, and others, I knew I was in for a treat. For the next
six months, we chipped away at his songs, a few at a time, and in about a
month he’ll be holding his new album, Young at Heart.
Although his voice was just a bit frailer than his previous project, his
passion and sincerity still shone through. Working with him was like
working with a little kid playing with a new toy. He exuded glee and
humor and together, we had a ball recording his songs.
Remember that a life is only worth living if we are living our life. Don’t
ever stop being that kid!
Jersey Boys Deserves Long Run
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
“
Oh What a Night” it was when the Tony Award
winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys
opened at The Orleans Hotel on February 22,
2024.
The show in an abbreviated
version enjoyed an eleven year run
at the Wynn and Paris Casinos.
This production is the entire
Broadway version with a cast of
17 performers, ten musicians,
all 27 songs and a ten minute
intermission.
The show is based on the real
life story of Frankie Valli and
The Four Seasons. The group repeatedly reached the top of the charts
racking up two dozen Top Forty hits from 1962-1968. The opening night
audience clearly enjoyed legendary hits including “Big Girls Don’t Cry”,
“Oh What a Night”, “Can’t Keep My Eyes Off of You”, and “Sherry”.
The producers took no chances on this version of the show. Many of the
talented cast members were tapped to reprise the roles that they already
mastered around the country.
According to John Bentham, CEO of Ivory Star Productions and lead
producer of the new Jersey Boys, “Everybody from the director to the
choreography, lighting, audio, costumes, they’ve all been associated with
the show for decades.” Joel Barreiro in the role of Frankie Vallie brings the
house down with his vocal range. Kudos as well to Tyler Matthew Burk,
Jonatan Cable, Jared Chinock, and Kit Treece.
The show brings to life the story of how four young guys under a street
light in New Jersey rose to fame.
As audiences enjoy so many of
their hits, folks learn about their
personal lives – often troubling.
There is no idealistic sugar coating.
While they rose to the top of
the charts musically, off stage was
a different story. We see crime,
infidelity, out of control gambling,
death of loved ones, and squabbles.
Real life stuff that accompanied their on-stage success.
Go see this show to hear the songs you love and enjoy some tremendous
talent from the leads and backup singers and dancers. See Jersey Boys at
The Orleans Wednesdays - Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday matinee at 3:30
p.m.
Spring Cleaning & New Goals
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Spring! Time to work on our 2024 goals
including spring cleaning.
Yep, I started my spring cleaning in mid-March.
I purged my closet of quite a f gowns, evening bags, shoes and accessories.
Project 150 received my closet donations. It’s an organization that
supplies prom dresses, accessories and regular clothes to underprivileged
high school kids. This will enable them to attend their prom in style
which they may not have been financially able to do.
As far as my other spring cleaning, I will donate household items to my
other favorite charities. What a relief! And heart-warming to help others.
Unstuffed Means Unstuck
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Nothing more upsetting than when you can’t
find something. And in looking for and
finding that thing, you get sidetracked to an
uninvited walk down memory lane.
Now you’re overthinking, crying, stressing out, getting upset, and
dealing with emotions you hadn’t felt in years. None of it had to happen,
but the stuff got in your way!
And now you’re stuck; you’re right back through the door you thought
you closed. It’s time to get unstuffed and unstuck!
Each day, you have an opportunity to move past the stuff that keeps
you stuck. Getting unstuffed and unstuck requires a clear understanding
of your current and future needs.
New goals are on the agenda. Now that the weather is warmer and
pleasant, daily walks are on the rise. I see neighbors walking each day and
getting some wonderful fresh air.
How many of you are tired of being cooped up in your house throughout
the winter? I manage to get out each day; whether working or teaching
my aerobic classes.
You’ve seen the commercial of the “energizer bunny”? Well, I’ve been
called that frequently! Keep on going, going, going!
I’ve been asked “where do you get your energy?” I’ve been active all my
life, so it’s no big deal to “keep going.”
What do I eat to keep up my energy? Anything I want! I try to eat healthy
with rarely red meats, but mostly vegetables, fruits, chicken or fish.
I drink lots of water. Rule of thumb is that you take your “honest”
weight, divide it in half and that’s how many ounces of water you need
each day. If you exercise (especially in the soon to be hot Las Vegas heat)
you’ll need even more water to stay hydrated.
At 79 years young, I feel so blessed to do what I do each day. Yes, I do
get tired sometimes, but I know my body and know when to stop or slow
down.
My goal is to have my 100th birthday announced on the TODAY show!
Well, that’s a great goal to have, right?
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
April 2024
That includes your lifestyle needs, your medical needs, and your actual
and unpredictable needs. You must decide what to keep and what to
purge. But you may be thinking about how to purge, instead of why.
When you’re purging your life of unnecessary stuff, how are you
making those decisions? Decisions in matters like this are usually made
based on lack of use, takes up too much space, don’t use anymore, or
making the home safer and more accessible.
Instead, think about how these items make you feel when you see them?
Do they take you back to a bad memory, bad time, or bad experience? Do
they make you feel stuck? If yes, maybe it’s time to purge!
Take time to review your stuff and determine: What items make you
feel happy without also making you feel sad? Which items do you need for
your activities of daily living (things you require to survive)?
What are you holding onto because you’ll feel guilty letting them go?
These questions are most important because they get rid of the indecision
and fringe “stuff” places in your life. Now, you’re ready to purge.
It’s the stuff that keeps you stuck and doesn’t allow you to age in place
comfortably, contently, and peacefully. It’s time to get unstuffed and
unstuck!
The Tax Man Cometh
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
I
’ve always been fortunate that in every place
I’ve lived, I met
the most wonderful
people, and made best friends. Usually they
had my same interests and loved to entertain
as much as I do.
A few years ago, some of my fun-loving
friends and I decided to have a party on April
15 th to commemorate tax day (notice I didn’t
say celebrate). We called it “Rich Man, Poor
Man.”
Those of us who had to pay the IRS were
given dishes that cost $15 or less. Those who
were receiving refunds were given dishes
costing a minimum of $30.
Each dish had to feed 20 people. No, this
is not a fairy tale; it was a time when food
could actually be purchased somewhat
inexpensively.
To make it more interesting, proteins had
to be featured in the inexpensive dishes and carbohydrates in the more
expensive ones. We had to procure the ingredients and provide receipts for
the dish we were making. Serious business!
The idea turned out to require a lot of ingenuity, creativity, and plain
hard work, but when we sat down to plan, the ideas just flew. And, oh, it
was fun! It became the party to repeat each year.
There are certain memories that I hold dear. Sitting around a table
with friends, laughing and working together - this is one of the better
ones!
I haven’t associated April 15 th with fun
since then, but (big surprise) I do associate
it with food. One of the dishes that stood out
was Hot Crab Dip. It became my go-to for
many years, and I forgot about it until now.
Hot Crab Dip: In top half of double
boiler, combine 8 oz. softened cream
cheese with ½ tsp. prepared mustard, 4 tsp.
Confectionary sugar, ¼ tsp. garlic powder,
1/3 cup mayonnaise (Best Foods), 3 tbs.
Sauternes, ½ tsp. salt and ¼ cup grated
sweet onion. Heat and stir until well blended.
Stir in two six ounce cans of crabmeat and
heat through. Serve in a small chafing dish
if you wish to keep it hot. Serve with garlic
buttered Rye toast squares or crisp crackers.
Note: Sauternes can be replaced with
Moscato, Riesling or Gewurztraminer.
Free From Bondage!
By: Liz Breier / This & That
As of this writing, we are nearly 6 months
from the horrendous events of October 7,
2023. There remain approximately 130 hostages
in Gaza. This
month, Jews worldwide will celebrate
the Passover holiday.
Israel has been accused of genocide
of the Palestinians. Genocide is not a
word I think of when I think of Jews or
Israel, unless I focus on the multitude
perpetrated on Jews since the first century.
Is it any wonder that Jews are
determined not to have a repeat
performance? When have Jews ever
initiated a war or an attack? When
persecuted, they have always moved on, either expelled, exiled,
exterminated - but never the ones to initiate.
The story of Passover recalls how Jews were slaves in the land of Egypt
constructing pyramids and statues. Moses and Aaron appeared before the
Pharaoh and asked to release the Jews from slavery.
Each time the request was made, Pharoah would agree and then
reverse his decision. Finally, Pharoah gave in and allowed the Jews to
leave.
When Pharoah realized he would have no one to build his great edifices,
he sent his soldiers after the Jews. I doubt that there is anyone who has not
witnessed the epic scene from the movie “Ten Commandments” when
God parted the Red Sea for the Jews to proceed as the pursing soldiers
came after them, only to have the waters close over them.
The story of the release of Jews from
slavery in Egypt has created many
symbols that are evident at a Seder and
for the entire week of Passover. Why
matzo (unleavened bread)? It symbolizes
the suffering of the Hebrews while in
bondage as well as the haste with which
they were forced to leave Egypt.
Another symbolic food is called
charoset – a mixture of apples, walnuts
and wine that is meant to symbolize the
mortar used to construct the Pharoah’s
buildings. Bitter herbs (horseradish is commonly used) and that, along
with parsley dipped in salt water, represent the bitterness of the years and
tears shed during their slavery.
This Passover the hostages in Gaza are in my prayers. As Moses
implored Pharoah so many centuries ago, Let My People Go!
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
figured it was time to expand my horizons
I and talk about men’s fashions. Many people
may not know that men’s fashions are equally as
important.
To that end, attending last month’s fashion shows here in Las Vegas
proves that men’s fashion is innovative, daring and on the cutting edge
- just like women’s attire.
There are too many influential men’s designers to name in this
column. Some of the most recognizable names are Ralph Lauren,
Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Alessandro Michele and many others.
What’s interesting about this is they all started out designing just men’s
clothes and branched off into home decor, cologne, shoes and women’s
attire.
Who doesn’t remember the Izod polo? It was the rage in the early 80s
and everyone (myself included) wanted one. As a very stylish unisex
pullover, it
was a perfect
item to wear
with jeans and
shorts. And the
best part was
that it came
in multiple
colors.
Returning
to the original
topic of men’s
fashion, Stitch
Fix defines
“Big and Tall”
as the same elements of Tall sizing, but also includes width. If a man
needs clothes that go beyond XL, Big and Tall may be the perfect fit - e.g.
17 inches in the neck, 46 inches in the chest, and 40 inches in the waist.
The general rule of thumb is Men 6’ 2” and taller. Many of the male
clients that I work with, have no idea that you can purchase clothes in
this category at stores like Dillard’s, Nordstroms,
The clothing departments are almost the same in either Big and Tall
as well as regular sizes. Case in point: Tommy Bahama carries their
famous Camp Shirt, in regular and Big and Tall.
Some of the most famous faces that would fall into the Big and Tall
category are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Trace Adkins, Ben Affleck, Fred Dryer,
and Terry Crews. It’s pretty safe to say that these guys are most likely
thrilled that designers create clothing that will accommodate their
height and waist.
“It’s not the appearance that makes a man, it’s the man that makes
an appearance.” Anthony Liccione
If you’re a baby boomer, then you may remember
the phrase “what season are you?” Starting in
the late 70s and going strong through the 80s
there was a very popular book called “Color Me
Beautiful” by Carole Jackson.
The book was a guide to what colors looked best on women and was
divided into seasons. You may be considered a winter, summer, spring or
autumn depending on your skin tone and hair color.
In order to help women find their best color, there were home parties
where a host would invite guests and a color specialist to drape you with
material in hopes of deciding your true color for your best look.
I remember attending a party but honestly don’t remember what my
season was. I wear the colors I like, although I recognize that my favorite
colors often do not look the best on me.
I love red and
I wear a lot of
it, but it doesn’t
do much for
me. When I put
on olive green,
which isn’t
often because I
don’t love the
color, I do think
it’s a way better
look.
Well, why
does something
that happened
over 40 years
now? It’s
because what is
old is new again. Like so many things, there is a new version of our old
Color Me Beautiful parties.
I know this because once again, my 14-year-old granddaughter was
excited to share this cool “new” idea with me, telling me all about how
certain colors look better on people depending on their coloring. She was
surprised when I sent her links about this concept that was very big when
I was just a little older than she is.
Curious to find out your season? Like many things, technology has
entered the picture. There is a website called Colorwise.me to help you
figure it out. Or, if you prefer the old way, you can find an updated version
of the book “Color Me Beautiful” available on Amazon.
It might be fun to try and figure out what my season is, but even if I do,
I’d likely still wear the colors I like. Old habits are hard to break.
Ordinary Angels
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Lionsgate Movies, under the direction of
Jon Gunn, reproduced a true story called,
“Ordinary Angels.”
Hilary Swank, (Sharon Stevens) along with
Alan Ritchson (Ed Schmitt) and Nancy
Travis, portrayed these real people to the
heartstring with simple dialogue.
You can’t ignore the value of the film that
finally makes you feel good about the world.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it 83% in scoring but
the audience score was 99%.
There’s a surprise in this “tear jerker”
that keeps the focus on Hilary and not about
proselytizing religion. The director doesn’t
beat the audience with swelling music or
manipulative weepy scenes.
Swank elevates the film from your ordinary faith based movie and Alan
proves he can play beyond the tough guy. Hilary and Alan are fantastic
together in this film.
When something works; it works. This is a “tear jerker” with solid
performances.
A tight script, good messages and polished direction. Ordinary Angels
is both inspiring and emotional and trusts its audience enough to know
that God’s teachings are spread through the actions of people and not
beat into you by incessant heavy-handed messaging.
Cinema brings light to a beautiful true story; ordinary people doing
extraordinary things and does it justice. Is
it a miracle? You decide.
It’s about ordinary folks responding
to others in need with extraordinary
compassion and resourcefulness. A
miracle any way you slice it.
In its celebration of community support
for a young girl’s liver transplant medical
expenses, Ordinary Angels is basically Go
Fund Me: The Movie. The theme of the
film - importance of the healing power of
kindness and how one person can make a
difference, may tug at your heart.
It cost nothing to be kind. This is certainly a story worthy of being told
and seen. It’s incredible!
I rate this true story movie, Ordinary Angels a big 5!
NO SEDATION, MICRO INCISION CARPAL TUNNEL
By:Ryan Grabow, MD / Help My Hands!
WE’RE BACK! “Help My Hands!” - the monthly
column on common hand conditions has returned.
WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is compression of the median nerve
as it passes through the carpal tunnel (a narrow space in
the wrist containing the median nerve and all the tendons
to your fingers and thumb). Symptoms are decreased
sensation or tingling in the thumb, index, and long
fingers. Patients may drop things or have pain. In
severe cases thumb muscle deteriorates.
HOW IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
If carpal tunnel syndrome is suspected, patients
are often sent for an EMG Nerve Conduction
Study to test nerve function. Thanks to our
advanced ultrasound technology, we can
now screen for carpal tunnel syndrome with a quick and painless
diagnostic ultrasound exam of the wrist!
STANDARD CARPAL TUNNEL TREATMENT OPTIONS?
While a steroid (cortisone) injection may relieve mild carpal tunnel
syndrome in younger patients, patients over 40 typically require
a carpal tunnel release surgery to cure their symptoms. Surgery
relieves the pressure on the median nerve by cutting the ligament at
the top of the carpal tunnel. This makes more space for the nerve just
like letting out a pair of pants. Carpal tunnel surgery is typically an
open procedure with a 1 to 2 inch incision in the palm/wrist or an
endoscopic procedure with a smaller incision. They are performed
under general anesthesia at a hospital or surgery center. Medical
clearance and stopping blood thinners are typically required!
ADVANCED TREATMENT - NO SEDATION, MICRO INCISION,
ULTRASOUND GUIDED - CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE
Invented at the Mayo Clinic, the UltraGuideCTR®
system by Sonex Health, allows your carpal tunnel to be
cured in minutes under local anesthesia with an incision
smaller than a Tic Tac®.
No Fasting - No Stopping Blood Thinners.
No Need for Medical Clearance or Preop Testing.
Using ultrasound to obtain a LIVE VIEW of your hand anatomy, Dr.
Grabow inserts the UltraGuideCTR® system to safely cure your carpal
tunnel in minutes. With an incision smaller than a Tic Tac® there are
no stitches and minimal post procedure discomfort. You are allowed
to drive, use a walker or cane, care for a loved one, and perform
light activities the day of your procedure. Most patients return to their
normal activities in under a week!
Is Your Inheritance Properly Protected?
(And What About Your Children’s Inheritance?)
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
The older generation today is about to transfer
the greatest concentration of wealth in the
history of mankind. The question is: Have you properly planned your
estate?
If not, the resulting impact on your life and your heirs may be
devastating.
“But I already have a Living Trust. Isn’t that enough?”
Many people have chosen to set up a Living Trust (and rightly so)
because the Living Trust is the preferred estate plan vehicle for most
homeowners.
The problem is that all Living Trust estate plans are not created (or
maintained) equally!
We know this because our law firm regularly reviews hundreds of
Living Trusts drawn by others and we’ve found that many contain
glaring defects. Like parachutes when the time comes to pull the cord,
it needs to work perfectly.
Even when we find that Trusts were initially drawn properly, many
have been poorly maintained.
A poorly drafted or maintained Living Trust may cause
you and your family needless suffering and unnecessary
court fees, attorneys’ fees, taxes and nursing care bills!
Worse yet, your family’s inheritance may not be properly protected
from some third party grabbing it - a spouse in a divorce, a lawsuit, a
creditor, the IRS or other predators! What if someone needs memory
care or skilled nursing?
Now is the time to properly plan ahead for you, your
children and other loved ones.
Don’t wait until your Trust vehicle is most needed – like when you
becomes ill, disabled or pass. It may be too late to fix!
Whether your estate is $250,000 or $2,500,000 (or more) we invite
you to attend an eye-opening and thought-provoking estate planning
seminar. Gain the knowledge that you need to make informed and
intelligent decisions.
Then, take advantage of a discounted consultation with one of our
attorneys to review your existing Living Trust or to discuss how a new
Trust plan may be custom designed so it will work right!
Isn’t it worth a few hours of your time to make sure you, your spouse,
family and loved ones get the protection you deserve?
See the below for the seminar date and time most convenient for you.
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Nevada ranks 35 th in the nation as to
population size - at 3.2 million people, and
yet is home to over 12% of the nation’s homeless
youth! That figure
translates to an estimated total of 1,800
youth.
To some, that number may seem
insignificant considering the percentage
to total population is .055%. But numbers
do not reflect the seriousness or level of
pain these youth suffer every day.
How do I know this? Because I became
a volunteer for one of the organizations
that provide a safe and sane environment
for these homeless youth.
The organization is the non-profit
Nevada Partnership for Homeless
Youth (NPHY) founded in 2002. I have
witnessed the agony of these “kids” and the impact it had on me was life
changing.
Reasons for their plight range from parental abuse and hunger to
outright rejection by all who they come in contact with as well as other
heinous acts. However, I have also witnessed the miracle of revival and a
A Startling Statistic
Elissa Smith-Lonsdale
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Sergeant First Class Elissa Smith-Lonsdale
served as a Combat Medic and Paratrooper.
She deployed to Iraq in
2003 as a member of the 173d Airborne Brigade,
and then again in 2009.
She was medically discharged in 2015, and
presently owns her own CPR instruction and
certification business in Georgia, where she lives
with her husband and son.
VET 2 VET: What inspired you to not only join
the Army, but to volunteer to be a paratrooper as
well?
Elissa: I joined in 1997 for a change of life.
Things were not going the way I wanted them
to go, so I needed the change. As for being a
paratrooper, I ended up in a recruiting office
where I was shown a video of the Army Airborne.
Without hesitation, I said “Where do I sign up for that?” Little did I
know how tough it was going to be, but I persevered and earned my wings
in 1998. I served with the 82 nd Airborne Division, and then went on to
serve with the 173d Airborne in Vicenza, Italy and Iraq.
VV: Besides being a very dangerous job, being a combat medic is a
sense of belonging to a “foster sense of family.”
The NPHY provides emergency shelter and care, including food and
medical attention. It also provides long term housing and professional
counseling services.
Volunteers are available 24/7. Local businesses (including local,
county and state governmental agencies)
provide financial support as well as
ordinary Nevadans like you and me.
One painful fact is that the age ranges
from 9 - 17 years of age! Yes, as young as
9 years old!
Imagine for a moment and reflect
on your own personal experiences as to
how you lived at the age of 9! I’m certain
you will feel the incredible fear, pain and
sense of hopelessness! To these children,
the family unit is a myth!
I implore everyone to reach out to
NPHY and offer your support. Your life
will be the richer for it and so will all
those kids who desperately need your help.
Go take a look at what they do! The website is NPHY.org.
pretty big act of love. How did you get directed to that journey, and what
life lessons did you bring away from your wartime experiences?
Elissa: My stepmother was a nurse and role model, and even as a kid
I wanted to help people by working in the medical
field. Fortunately, during my Army testing I scored
110 on the GT which qualified me to be a combat
medic.
As for life lessons, I think the most important
thing I came back from the war in Iraq with was
a desire to be more grateful. After losing casualties
and friends in a war zone, I was ultra-aware of
how short life really is..
VV: Do you have any words of encouragement
for all the people struggling with physical and
mental challenges?
Elissa: Don’t let yourself fall short of any
stigmas attached to physical and mental
challenges. Personally, I continue with therapy,
and attend group counseling. I constantly find them very helpful in
smoothing out the rough spots on the road ahead.
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
RVing 2019!
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
August 2019. On vacation but stopped to have
the RV steps repaired. They refuse to fold down.
We have to leap out the door!
I don’t do leaping anymore. Hubby repels out backwards. There was a
time I would leap into his arms, but I’ve gained a few pounds.
Now I use a stepstool attached to bungee cords to exit the RV. I lower the
stepstool with the bungee cords and step down.
We’re going out to dinner tonight. Hubby was ready before me and
decided to wait in the car. I think he thinks I go faster if I know he’s
waiting.
30
April 2024
It doesn’t work that way. At this age it takes me longer to get ready and
that’s that. I gave my hair another tweak, added some blush to my cheeks,
and voila, ready as I’ll ever be.
I lowered the stepstool, hung onto the railings and backed out. Gingerly
inched my foot around until my toes found the stepstool. I gave it a little
shove to center it. My bad - it collapsed!
I muttered a curse and tried to pull myself back up. My muscles
quivered and I sank farther down. Still no terra firma!
Soon my left knee was hovering just under my chin. My right leg
was dangling, and my back and arms were stretched out of
proportion. “Help!”
Donnie had the stereo blaring in the car. He couldn’t see me, couldn’t
hear me. The dogs got up though, wagged their tails and watched me
curiously.
Should I let go and fall backwards, or just let my body break into
pieces?
The problem solved itself. My knee hit my chin and slammed my
mouth shut. I bit my lip, groaned, and sank further down.
The good news: My toes finally touched the ground! I limped to the car.
Hubby smiled. “That wasn’t long,” he said. “I’m starving! How’s about
catfish? There’s a place down the road.”
“Great. Oh, by the way, I might need a knee replacement soon.” I
wiggled my jaw. “Don’t think it’s broken.”
“Huh?” “Never mind…”
P.S. The catfish was delicious!
Cave of the Crystals
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
There are numerous known crystal caves
worldwide, including in the United States.
However, there is no exact count of how many
crystal caves exist since excavators discover new mines spontaneously. At
the same time, known mines may never get
explored since they’re either too dangerous
or unreachable.
The Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico,
is a relatively recent find that is considered
the “mother load” of crystal mines. In
2000, Naica miners discovered a horseshoeshaped
cavity around 358 feet. It contained
gigantic crystals and immediately drew
some scientists’ and researchers’ attention
since crystal caves are known for their dramatic mineral formations.
A group of scientists in the Naica Project have been studying the cavern.
The first researchers however, had little time to spend in the cave.
They found “Cueva de los Cristales,” the cave of crystals. This cave was
bedded over a magma chamber, making the temperature a scorching 136
degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining a constant 100% relative humidity,
exposing visitors to a hyperthermia hazard and making breathing nearly
impossible.
This exposure meant that doctor monitored researchers could only stay
10 minutes inside the cave. More extended excavations were limited to 30
minutes. Staying that long required fitted suits (weighing about 44 lbs)
with a cooling system containing ice reserves in backpacks.
The ice would take approximately 30 minutes to melt. Additionally,
cooled water recirculation in polymer tubes were installed over their
entire body surface, and respirators
delivering fresh air for easier breathing was
also addressed.
The giant crystals of Naica were from the
calcium sulfate-rich water. Calcium sulfate
can form several minerals, but it turned
out that a specific gypsum, transparent,
colorless variety known as selenite, came to
be the mineral in the caves.
Per the National Geographic. “The
chamber contains the largest crystals ever
found. The most gigantic of all the crystals ever found measured 34.7
ft., with a volume of approximately 180 cu. ft., and an estimated 12-ton
mass.”
In addition to their size, these 100 million year old crystals have
provided insights into the earth’s history, discovering ancient microbial
life trapped within them.
Electric Vehicles, Alive or Dead?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Although there are plenty of people who say
they want an EV, are they actually buying one?
While the government has dictated the switch to
EVs, the initial excitement and push has subsided.
Those early adopters have made their
purchases, and the rest of us are still
waiting to see if EVs are actually a viable
alternative. We are getting mixed messages
from the media that EVs are doing well,
while others are saying the trend is losing
momentum.
While 300,000 EVs sold at the end of
2023 shows growth, the pace of purchase
has dropped, and the government’s sales
targets are no longer on track. Ford, GM,
Honda and even Tesla have delayed EV
manufacturing plant startups, and a handful of automotive executives
also aren’t backing EVs as strongly as they once did.
And a handful of EV companies that burst on the scene aren’t making
enough money to sustain themselves. VinFast, the Vietnamese company
has seen its stock prices drop astronomically, while Faraday Futures and
Fisker’s stocks are worth less than $1 per share.
What makes more sense for automakers and consumers are hybrids.
These are part-time EVs that offer a smart compromise between gas and
electric.
Manufacturers have slowed EV production, but increased hybrid
production to the point that hybrids are outselling EVs by a considerable
margin. Hybrids are less expensive to purchase, they erase range anxiety,
and don’t require a home charging unit or
public charging access.
Hybrids are a more viable alternative for
city dwellers, those who live in areas prone
to blackouts or disruption of electrical
services, and people who have longer
commutes, plus can deliver good fuel
efficiency depending on driving habits.
To add to this, only a handful of EVs now
qualify for a federal tax credit now, which
means there is no tax benefit for many EV
owners.
For buyers, there are a lot more hybrid
choices from all manufacturers, which is good news as well.
Will we see a time when the internal combustion engine goes away
forever? Possibly, but not today.
By: Jane Dow / Mutterings & Musings
I
’ve been living on my own for 15 years. The
absence of a male ear to confide in has
definitely increased my self-talk.
And that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned. After all, who loves to
listen to me more than me?
My self-talk sometimes borders on the quasi-religious. “My God! Help
me quit binge-watching re-runs of Perry Mason!”
At times it’s congratulatory. “I ate only two pieces of pecan pie instead
of the whole thing!”
More often than not, my self-talk lambastes my failures: “When will I
ever mop my floors? Even the dog won’t lick them. Why can’t I look more
like Sophia Vergara in my thong? Why do I still find Captain Kangaroo
so tantalizingly sexy?”
I’ve done scads of research on the power of self-talk. OK. I Googled a
couple articles. It’s an inner dialogue we all do.
I’ve trained myself to be simply aware when I start the self-degradation.
It’s usually about my weight and appearance.
We girls obsess over those stupid, arbitrary numbers on the scale. But
I know - I truly know…I have led a blessed life even with my share of
setbacks.
But now is all I can control. Not five minutes ago or five minutes from
now. Being in the moment is do-able.
I’m doing some self-talk right now by typing these words. The inner
voice. Mindfulness. Self-compassionate thoughts.
I realize this whole article has been about me. But maybe some of you
out there can connect. We all share the gift of life.
My self-talk counsels me to be kind in my down moments. With myself
and others. Kindness. Compassion. Patience. We can do this.
For those of you experiencing the joy of massive
dental work, this is for you!
Let’s start with my Uncle Ben, the family dentist.
He was from Russia and had escaped incredible abuse and hardship as a
young man and came to the United States.
He became a dentist in the days when drills made the same noises as
jackhammers and scared children. If you’re from New York, you can
recall the Con Edison noises in the street. Same thing.
I was a young teenager experimenting with stockings, make-up and
hairdo styles which he did not fully approve of. So as he worked on my
teeth, at the same time, he would pinched my face and tell me to wipe that
stuff off. And let my hair flow naturally.
Remember the
beehive? With
deafening sounds
and my vibrating
head, let’s just say
he scared the crap
out of me.
I loved him
anyway and
just recently I
discovered his
history showed
him to have been
a most amazing
and courageous
man. Sadly, even
if I had known his
story, it wouldn’t
have meant much
to an early teen.
Fast forward decades of minimal dentist chairs and I’m facing the
denture/implant thing. The experience cancels the myths they advertise
on TV.
Teeth in one day means after they remove everything, they make you
temporary teeth that fit over all the stitches and swelling and covers your
palette so even if you have a strong gag reflex, you’re not going to be able
to tolerate it - even on pain killers.
The choice comes down to looking like Moms Mabley or drugs. It’s
taken me 4 months to get used to temps.
You learn a lot going through this. Putting food in your mouth at new
angles, picking out the good stuff off a plate so you don’t hit the sore spots
is just the beginning. You might think losing weight would be easy, but
then ice cream presents as a great alternative and that idea flies out the
window.
Whole Foods vs. Processed Foods
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
know everyone knows this but I’ll say it out
I loud. Stop eating “junk food!” To quote the
great Jack Lalanne, “If
man made it, don’t eat it!”
Whole foods are items that remain close
to their natural state. They have not been
significantly altered or broken down into
simpler forms before consumption.
This category includes fresh fruits and
vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts, seeds, lean
meats, and fish. These foods are densely
packed with essential nutrients, including
vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants
that are crucial for our bodily functions.
On the other side of the spectrum are processed foods. These “junk
foods” are heavily processed foods, like fast-food meals and snacks laden
with added sugar, salt, and preservatives. While not all processed foods are
inherently bad, most contain unhealthy additives and lack nutritional
density.
The advantages of whole foods over processed foods are manifold.
Firstly, whole foods provide a wealth of nutrients essential for maintaining
health and preventing diseases.
The fiber in whole foods, for example, aids in digestion and
helps maintain a healthy weight by keeping you feeling full longer.
Furthermore, whole foods are naturally lower in unhealthy fats, sugars,
and sodium.
This starkly contrasts with many processed
foods, which often contain high levels of these
ingredients to enhance flavor and shelf life
but contribute to health issues like obesity,
hypertension, and metabolic syndrome.
Whole foods generally have a lower
environmental impact since their production
and distribution require fewer resources like
energy and water and involve less packaging.
On the other hand, the production and
distribution of processed foods can be resource-intensive and generate
more waste.
Conclusion? Demand from yourself to stop the madness! Cook and eat
whole foods and give yourself a chance at a long and healthy life!!
You know better. You need to decide to choose healthy life over illness!
The Implications of
Diabetes
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Diabetes is a serious problem in the American
culture; especially among the elderly. The
predominance of diabetes cases can be of two types.
In type one diabetes, the cells in the pancreas that make insulin are
destroyed. A lack of insulin disallows sugar to enter the body’s cells. As an
analogy, insulin is like a key that opens the body’s cells to receive sugar.
In type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin but the receptors for
insulin on the body’s cells no longer responds to the insulin, once again
disallowing the blood sugar to enter the body’s cells. This is like having
plenty of keys but the locks are now deformed so the keys no longer fit.
5 Tips on How to Discuss
Your Mental Health
By: Stan Popovich / Your Mental Health
It can be frustrating to struggle with your mental
health and to get your family and friends to
understand where you are coming from. Although most people may be
understanding, there is usually one or two people who will make things
more challenging for you.
As a result, here are 5 suggestions on how to deal with the people you
know regarding your mental health situation.
Since it cannot enter the body’s cells the sugar remains in the blood
stream. There are two major ways of testing the level of sugar in the blood.
Fasting blood sugar tests the level of blood sugar over the past 24 hours.
A more thorough test is known as hemoglobin A1C.
When sugar remains in the blood stream at high levels, it coats red
blood cells. The higher the sugar content in the blood stream, the greater
sugar content that coats the red blood cells over time.
Where the fasting blood sugar shows the level of sugar in the blood over
a period of about a day, hemoglobin A1C will show the level of increased
blood sugar over a period of about 60 days.
The excess sugar in the blood stream causes many problems but the
underlying mechanism for these problems is the same. The excess sugar
in the blood stream is like sandpaper on the walls of the blood vessels,
damaging them over time.
This leads to eventual occlusion in the blood vessels. This decreased
blood flow (especially in the microcirculation) affects numerous tissues
- including the eyes (blindness), the kidneys (kidney damage) and the
nerve in the feet (peripheral neuropathy).
Where medications may help, the only truly effective way to treat type 2
diabetes is with dietary changes.
April 2024
1. Listen to the professionals: Your friends may mean well,
but when it comes down to it, the professionals are aware of your
circumstances more than anyone. It’s important that you listen and
follow the advice from your doctor or medical professional rather than
following the advice from your friends and other people you may know.
2. Don’t argue with others: It is important that you do not get
into arguments with those who are giving you a tough time. It is not
your job to worry about how others may view your circumstances. Focus
on managing your mental health rather than trying to get everyone’s
approval.
3. Choose your friends wisely: Distance yourself from those who
won’t make an effort to help understand what you are going through.
You need to surround yourself with positive and supportive people. If you
have problems or issues with a particular person, then its best to keep
your distance.
4. You are not alone: There are millions of people who struggle
with their fears, anxieties, and depression. Many of your relatives and
friends more than likely struggled with anxiety and stress sometime in
their life. Do not feel that you are alone when it comes to your mental
health situation because there are all kinds of people around you who
can relate.
5. Your goal is to get better: Focus on how you can handle the
anxieties and stresses in your life rather than arguing with others who
are giving you a difficult time. This isn’t a public relations event where
you need to get approval from everyone. This is your life, and you need
to be more concerned about getting your life back on track rather than
pleasing everyone else.
Getting Ready for Growing Season
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
In April, we see our gardens blossoming and
branching out with new leaves and flowers.
We’ll also observe the first stages of fruit and
vegetable developing in preparation for harvesting later this season.
If you purchase new fruit trees and/or
vegetables, they must have a location that
will have at least 6-8 hours of daily sunlight
for your crops to develop and ripen. Therefore:
plan before planting.
April is ideal for adding additions to your
landscape since temperatures are moderate,
soil is warming, and the sun is not intense.
This permits new plants to develop strong and
expansive root systems needed to survive in the
hotter months ahead.
Ensure that your soil is properly aerated so
that oxygen reaches the roots and there is proper water drainage. Check
that drip emitters are strategically placed and functioning.
Follow the water authority’s watering days schedule; having your
morning sessions begin at 7:00 am so that water does not remain on
your plantings during the hottest time of the day. Droplets magnify the
sun’s rays causing leaf and flower burns!
Evening irrigation should take place at dusk to prevent surface water
from remaining on the ground at night. This will prevent root rot and
inhibit insect and fungus damage.
Fertilize your plants (except palms) at least once a month now
through mid-June. This will encourage strong roots and leaf growth by
replenishing soil nutrients absorbed in the early growing process.
Flowers, fruits and vegetables should be treated with a high
phosphorous fertilizer, while green bushes
should be treated with high nitrogen products.
Roses will benefit from applying Epsom Salt
(magnesium sulfate) as a granular or solution
to encourage flowering.
In addition, adding bone meal will increase
the calcium and phosphorous levels in the soil
helping succulents to grow. Palm trees should
not be fertilized until the soil reaches at least 70
degrees (from late May-August).
This month it is important to treat the soil
surrounding agaves and yuccas with a systemic
insecticide to prevent root-eating weevil larvae from attacking and
killing these plants!
Where to Retire
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
found these great states to retire, however, I am
I saving the best for last in a future article. In the
meantime, please contact me and tell me your
reasons why Nevada is a great place to retire.
CALIFORNIA
1. People make over $450,000 and still can’t afford to buy a house!
2. The fastest part of people’s commute is going down their driveway!
3. Everybody knows how to eat an artichoke.
4. When someone asks how far something is, you tell them how long it
will take to get there rather than how many miles away it is.
5. The four seasons are Fire, Flood, Mud & Drought.
6. People can live on the beach for free. All they need is a shopping cart,
a blanket, a bottle of cheap wine, a stray dog, and an old tarp salvaged
from a dumpster.
ARIZONA
1. People are willing to park three blocks away from any destination
because they found some shade.
2. People experience condensation on their rear ends from the hot
water in the toilet bowl.
3. People can drive for four hours in one direction and never leave the
Phoenix Metro Area.
4. Everyone has over 100 recipes for Mexican food.
5. People know that “dry heat” is comparable to what hits them in the
face if they open an oven door at 500 degrees.
6. The four seasons are Tolerable, Hot, Damn hot, & Are you
kidding me?
NEW YORK CITY
1. People say, “the city” and expect everyone to know they mean
Manhattan.
2. People get into long, heated arguments about how to get from
Columbus Circle to Battery Park.
3. People think Central Park is “nature.”
4. Most people have worn out their car horns…assuming they have a
driver’s license and a car!
5. People think eye contact is an act of aggression!
6. Nobody plans to retire in NYC, they plan on moving to Florida….
but die first.
You Really Can’t Take it With You
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Let’s take a peek where all things carousel is
celebrated and where both young and old
come to enjoy them.
Carousels are nostalgic and the Historic
Carousel Museum in Albany, Oregon offers
a good time while surrounded by and learning
about carousels.
The museum’s home is an attractive brick
building built in 2017 to honor the carnival ride.
Wonderfully preserved and restored, round and
around and around they go.
Carousel’s are charmingly simple and this
unique museum showcases their history.
Visitors see carousel figures being created,
maintained and restored. They learn that it takes
a remarkable amount of time to craft carousel
animals.
Volunteers can spend as much as 1,500 hours carving and another
800 hours to paint in order to complete a single carousel animal. Their
gorgeous works of art cost thousands.
There is also another museum display - the many loaned items by the
Dentzel family. The first creators of American carousels, Dentzel animals
were carved and painted in the late 1800s and are detailed with intricate
March 2024
Legacy Trio cruises.
And we are proud to announce that the one-and-only Tony Arias will
be bringing his oh, so special singing/comedy shows to our Hawaii cruise
next year. See next page. You can be sure that we
will be bringing you more information in future
editions.
Concerned that you can’t go since doing
so won’t leave enough to your children or
grandchildren when you take that “final
journey”? Then spend it on them when you
invite them to go on that certain cruise with
you.
For those of that have booked personal
family generation (grandparents, children and grandchildren) trips,
there is nothing more worthwhile than to receive
comments about what great family memory
moments we’ve helped create.
So, without sounding a bit presumptuous, spend
your children’s inheritance while you can enjoy it
- together as a family, or you can just take that trip
of a lifetime for yourself before it’s too late.
You never know what tomorrow will bring.
Enjoy the now and make your forever lifetime
memories. You won’t be sorry.
Carousels Delightfully Bridge Generation Gap
artistry and craftsmanship no longer found.
Of course, the museum’s main attraction is the carousel, an ongoing
project featuring dozens of brightly colored animals. In addition to
the classic horses, there are other imaginative
creatures, from unicorns, dragons, lions, tigers
and bears.
Albany’s carousel museum is an ongoing
project that eventually will have 52 different,
brightly colored animals. The rides are powered by
a 1909 Dentzel Carousel Corporation mechanism
donated to the museum by the National Carousel
Association and Bill Dentzel, great-grandson of
the founder of the Dentzel Carousel Corporation.
Each animal is a true labor of love and in the
workshop, they are in various stages of carving
or painting. The beautifully crafted works of art
become treasures and once complete, they take
their place to be enjoyed by visitors.
The next time you see a carousel, think about it - carousels delightfully
bridge the gap between generations. And this nostalgic museum is where
visitors can make yesterday’s dream today’s reality.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.

Bluff In The Buff
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
Is your party a bust? Are your friends staring into
space, or worse, sleeping? Liven up the party
with a game of poker – strip poker.
“The truth is that people love to play strip poker,” writes Dan
O’Callaghan in Emagazine 888poker.com. “It can be a fun, sexy, or
hilarious way to spend a night…. The embarrassment of nudity provides
a fun way of adding just enough risk.”
Before seniors pull out their card table and chairs, they can sharpen
their skills, and perfect their poker faces, by taking some 7-Card Stud,
Texas Hold ‘Em, and Razz classes online. “We provide personal training
with mock games, with one person or multiple novices at one time,” Mark
Streeter, owner of Pokertraininglasvegas.com said.
“[Strip poker] brings camaraderie to the community,” Matthew
Carpenter, owner of instructional poker site luckymittengaming.com,
said. “And it’s a game where you don’t lose your money.”
Both websites provide the invigorating experience of calling, raising,
and going all in. With your newfound dexterity, you’ll be flush with
confidence, and maybe the one who’s most – or least – dressed at the end
of the game. That’s up to you…
In addition to courting some action, naughty card sharks can also keep
their minds sharp.
According to replaypoker.com, poker enhances mental capacity and
helps prevent Alzheimer’s in senior citizens by up to 50 percent.
The blog post on the site states, “Along with building cognitive skills that
can lead to enhanced productivity and overall mood, games like Texas
Hold ‘Em or Omaha poker can also reduce players’ risk of Alzheimer’s,
making poker a valuable tool for senior citizens looking to stay sharp and
delay the effects of aging.”
Next time you organize a get-together, take a gamble. Tell your
swinging, high-roller friends they’re going to hit the jackpot during a
friendly game of strip poker!
But don’t be surprised if some rookie players come wearing extra shirts,
vests, hats, jackets, socks, and underwear pleading cold weather.
Start dealing, and get ready to show all your cards…
