My Business Partner & Friend
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
My Vegas Voice partner Ray Sarbacker is retiring after 14 years
with the publication.
I met Ray at a business network meeting in the summer of 2009.
He convinced this stubborn publisher to “get out of his way” and
make him responsible regarding all graphics for the newspaper, now
magazine. To my everlasting credit, I listened to him.
He leaves The Vegas Voice with a bang – winning six national first
place awards from the North American Mature Publishers Association
(NAMPA) – the senior publishers trade association in the United States.
Ray achieved awards for our front pages an astonishing six years
in a row. In total, he designed 156 Vegas Voice front pages So please
understand my boasting when I shouted that Ray is the number one
graphic artist in Nevada.
And for extra credit, besides his extraordinary skills and talent, I
will always be grateful and proud for his exceptional character and
principle.
When political editor Rana Goodman first became aware of the
guardianship scandal, Ray was an unmovable rock in demanding that
we continue the investigation despite our then major advertisers (who
we later learned had a “relationship” with certain private guardians)
screaming that we “cease & desist” - or face financial failure
His telling them to “go to hell” and the subsequent consequences
nearly crippled The Vegas Voice but he was steadfast that the truth be
told. If my Rana is the “face” of our guardianship reform efforts, he was
certainly the “heart.”
Make no mistake: I will miss Ray and I constantly yelling at each
other. When I look back however at our Vegas Voice history and growth
of our “little throw away paper” I realize what a fantastic talent (and
most importantly, what an incredible friend) he has become.
For that, Rana and I, along with our entire Vegas Voice family wish
him and his Crystal a very long, healthy and happy retirement.
Sweet 16!
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
It’s beyond gratifying when our work and efforts are recognized by our peers. With that in mind, I am extremely proud to
announce that The Vegas Voice received 16 national awards last month from the North American Mature Publishers
Association (NAMPA see page 43). NAMPA is the largest, and most prestigious senior publication association in the United
States.
Such honors and awards went to:
1. Rana Goodman for her “Topical Issues” concerning Guardianship,
2. Howard Galin for his “Happy Gardens Column Reviews”,
3. Dan Hyde for his “Profile” of concentration camp survivor Ben Lessor,
4. Michael Roberts for the “Overall Design” of our magazine,
5. Our fantastic IT - Success City for “Best Website”,
6. Yours truly for my “Senior Issues, Editorial & Personal Essay”,
7. Six awards to Ray Sarbacker for his Front Pages & Graphics, AND
8. To everyone associated with The Vegas Voice for (once again) “General Excellence.”
As the judges held:
Cheers to The Vegas Voice for celebrating its 20 th anniversary… Every issue continues to be
loaded with columns and essays, some serious, others practical, many humorous. Whatever the topic, the columns
are always good reads.
In fact, all writers are listed on The Vegas Voice roster with a goal of writing “For your Health, Wealth, and Good
Times!” That goal has definitely been reached, maybe even exceeded.
In receiving “Best in Show” honors, all I can add is that our magazine and entire Vegas Voice family exemplifies the best of senior publications
and service to our readers. Every month we strive to be the “voice” to protect and enrich the lives of our senior community. As the “guy in charge”
I’m humbled and thrilled by these national awards.
Meet the New VP & President
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
It’s been a busy month at The Vegas
Voice with President Ray Sarbacker
retiring (see previous page) and our need
to name new officers.
Dianne David has served as our Ad
Manager the past few months. Her work
ethic matches her grace, charm and
professionalism and she has become an
indispensable part of our family.
With great pleasure, we announce that
Dianne is our new Vice President.
As for our new President, who better
than my Rana Goodman? Rana
epitomizes “Horatio Alger” in climbing the ranks of success through
hard work and never-ending dedication to
The Vegas Voice.
Starting over a decade ago as a
columnist, then political editor and
now ACE (Any Content Editor) my
PILL (partner in love & life) has
unconditionally earned this title through
her tireless efforts to protect seniors from
the evil and wrongdoing confronting our
readers.
And, yes, it certainly did not hurt that
she sleeps with the publisher.
How will Yours Truly survive with these
two “determined” women? We’ll soon find out.
Remembering Barbara Grostick
By: Rana Goodman & Dan Roberts
Our Vegas Voice Executive Director (and Dan’s Bronx Buddy) Bill
Caserta’s “domestic partner” Barbara Grostick passed away last
month.
She is survived by her two sisters
Becky and Beth, daughter Jennifer
and grandchildren Lyndon, Lily and
Laura.
And that does not include her Vegas
Voice family who have no words to
describe our grief and sadness. Our
deepest symphony and condolences
to Bill.
We have the obituary from
Barbara’s sisters setting forth what
a remarkable life Barbara had. Her service to others was legendary,
including her love and dedication to her Community Lutheran Church.
Barbara exemplified all that was good in a person.
We can list her numerous accomplishments but these are simply
“facts.” And in her passing, it’s not the awards that count, but how she
made everyone smile and feel that really matters.
Bill’s daughters Laura and Lynn in a few sentences correctly spelled
out how truly special Barabra was:
You brought so much joy and happiness to our dad and families
throughout the years. Thank you for making our kids feel so very
special and loved. People like you deserve the largest wings and the
brightest halos.
And our friend Bruce
Ewing was able to perfectly
express what everyone who
knew Barabara felt: One of
the sweetest, kindest people
I’ve ever known has moved
on to eternal life today.
Barbara was simply the
best.
Dan and I always had the
pleasure and absolute joy of
having Barbara as part of our
lives. From vacation trips to
simply going out with Bill
and Barbara for lunch or dinner, we always smiled and laughed.
We would constantly credit Barbara for having the remarkable skill
and patience for putting up with Bill on a daily basis. And while we
would laugh as she rolled her eyes as she hilariously replied with “if
only you knew” responses, there was never any doubt of her love for
Bill - and that Bill felt the same way towards her.
Her friends, her extended family (including her Vegas Voice
family), her now broken-hearted canine, Buster and everyone who
knew or she touched in so many ways will always treasure and love her.
We don’t know how one can measure a person’s value and existence
on this earth. We guess if you are loved, cared for, and be forever
missed when you are no longer around; you’ve had a worthwhile and
exceptional life.
By these standards, Barbara Grostick was a success beyond her wildest
dreams. May she rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, November 18 th at 11
am at Community Lutheran Church located at 3720 E. Tropicana
Avenue, Las Vegas 89121.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to the Community
Lutheran Church https://www.communitylv.org where Barbara was a
member for over 30 years.
Marching with Ancestors
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Publisher’s Note: In honor of Veterans
Day this month, we proudly highlight our
Vet-2-Vet columnist Chuck Dean.
My grandfather, Francis Dean, participated in the battle
for Elizabethtown, in North Carolina’s Cape Fear region.
And on August 27, 1781 the small contingent of patriots
crushed a larger force of British loyalists.
He was an Irish immigrant that became a soldier in
this country’s new army. In 1783, at the end of the war,
Francis was granted land on the frontier as payment for
his wartime service.
He set out immediately for the Smokey Mountain
wilderness to claim his land on the French Broad River,
what is now Tennessee. There he built a tavern/meeting house and
donated 50 acres of his granted land to establish the second oldest
town in Tennessee -Dandridge, named after America’s first First Lady,
Martha (Dandridge) Washington.
When I joined the Army in 1963, I had no idea that I was following in
the footsteps of one of America’s first veterans. Only later did I discover
this wonderful heritage.
Perhaps it’s why I wanted to be a soldier from an early age. I
wonder (this could be stretching things) if DNA markers are involved?
Interesting thought, but who knows?
Over the years, I have met many veterans that have children, or are
a child of a veteran, that joined because they were directly influenced,
and inspired, by an ancestor’s service. Likewise, I’ve met many “Army
brats”, “Navy brats”, “Air Force brats, or “Marine Corps
brats” that grew up immersed in military life in career
military homes.
With little deviation, these people make some of the
finest service people in the world. And America can be
thankful they took this well-trodden path.
In the late ‘90s I had the honor of pinning parachute
wings on my son at his jump school graduation. It was the
same school I graduated from in the early ‘60s.
He was stationed with the same army unit I was
many years earlier. I’m proud of his many awards and achievements
performed at levels that I never did.
He held to the standards; some I had taught him over the years and
exceeded those standards in his own way.
So, here’s another salute to veterans, and those that will follow.
You’re invaluable.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.
A New Kind of “Turkey”
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
Thanksgiving turkeys aren’t what they used to
be.
Check out this recent headline: “Millennials
Are Buying Smaller Turkeys for Thanksgiving Dinner.” Shocking, isn’t
it?
Makes one nearly give up hope for the younger generation.
You would think that Millennials would show some gratitude for my
generation of Baby Boomers who worked tirelessly to develop a breed
of big, fat 30-pound turkeys chock-full of antibiotics and salt water that
can barely waddle over to the feed trough. In fact, as reported on NPR
last year, “Due to selective breeding, the average turkey is now twice the
size it was in 1960.” Twice the size!
But Millennials, with their skinny jeans and skinny lattes, look to
purchase turkeys that resemble Victoria’s Secret models wearing Angel
Wings. What is wrong
with kids nowadays?
And when it comes
to Millennials looking
for just the right bird to
serve on Thanksgiving,
it’s not only size that
concerns them. They
can’t just walk up to
the counter and tell
the butcher, “I want a
turkey.”
No, their order is more likely to sound like this: “I would like a fresh,
all-natural, organic, bone-in-breast, free-range turkey, fed an allvegetarian
diet with no antibiotics, synthetic hormones, pesticides, or
stimulants.”
And do you know what? The butcher’s most likely going to wrap up
and hand them a plain old turkey, and they won’t know the difference.
On top of that, there are birds for sale today called “heritage
turkeys” which are growing in popularity with young buyers. Heritage
turkeys are described as “one of a variety of strains of domestic turkey
which retains historic characteristics that are no longer present in the
majority of turkeys raised.”
Not sure what characteristics they are referring to. I mean a wattle
is a wattle.
Folks who buy heritage turkeys place their orders months in advance.
That way they can go out to the farm and form a personal relationship
with the turkey of their choice leading up to Thanksgiving.
Purchasers of the turkeys swear that paying $100 or more for a 10
lb. turkey is worth it because they can do “a background check” on the
turkey and “bond with the bird.”
Sounds great. Except that, from a turkey’s perspective, something
tells me this relationship is going to have a tragic ending.
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
It seems like just yesterday that I completed
my 18-month service on the first Nevada
Guardianship Commission. It’s Chairman was
James Hardesty who, at that time was
chief justice of Nevada’s Supreme
Court.
The commission consisted of
attorneys, judges, a senior advocate
and two journalists, one from Reno
and yours truly. At every meeting,
people who had been victims of
guardianship were invited to speak
to the commission and tell their
experiences.
One in particular, a young
wheelchair bound man, told the
commission that one of the attorneys
sitting on the commission had sold
his home, out from under him to
benefit the guardian.
To put it bluntly, every victim, or person speaking on their behalf
told “gut wrenching” tales that often had some of the commission
members (but never the attorneys) in tears. When the 18 months were
over, I told Justice Hardesty that I would be (more than) willing to
continue serving on the permanent commission.
The Guardianship Commission is Worthless
This will guarantee it will never happen to you!
November 2023
Rana Goodman signs the first
Guardianship Nomination form. With her
is Publisher Dan, President Ray and then
Senator Becky Harris.
For more information and to RSVP,
contact The Vegas Voice at:
702/251-4441
or www.thevegasvoice.net
However, when the “permanent” commission was formed, I was
shocked to learn that the group chosen to serve were several attorneys,
and judges who had served originally. There were no senior
advocates nor were there any journalists who could make
sure the public knew what was happening.
I hoped and believed that the
commission would serve as a
lifeline for our seniors caught in the
guardianship trap. Sadly, that has not
been the case.
One of the judges on the commission,
Linda Marque, presided over a case last
year of a very well know, active Sun
City resident whose children wanted to
remove their mother from her home.
The children, after many hearings, got
their way.
Mom was involuntarily moved away
from her friends and placed into an
assisted living facility in California.
As you can imagine it was against her
(and her numerous friends willing to testify) very vocal objections.
Beyond tragic. Oh, but not a total loss. The attorneys made a ton of
money.
As I wrote last month, the danger to our seniors these days are not
coming from private guardians as they were a couple of years ago.
Now it is from their own families and in some cases, rivalry between
children or siblings.
And what is the Guardianship Commission doing to protect our
rights and dignity? Not a damn thing, but don’t worry, the lawyers and
judges on the commission are doing just fine.
I have to admit Publisher Dan is correct on one point – the
guardianship court system is not broken, but “fixed.” You need to
protect yourself and not become a victim.
If you have not filed a guardianship nomination form, PLEASE do
so. There is no cost involved other than a postage stamp.
Some people say, “I don’t need one, I have named my guardian in
my trust”
Well, think about this - no one will see your trust until it is too late.
As I have pointed out many times, if someone files with the court to be
your guardian, how does the judge know what’s in your trust?
Once you have filed the nomination form, should someone come
along and try to take guardianship of you, the first thing the court
MUST do is call the Secretary of State’s office and ask if you have filed
a nomination form. If you have…..CASE OVER!
Your wishes must be followed. Since the nomination form was passed
into law more than 5,000 have been filed by our seniors.
Don’t let anyone control what you have worked all your life for. File
the darn form.
Want a copy of the form? Go to our Vegas Voice website (thevegasvoice.
net) and down load a copy. Questions or information needed.? Give me
a call or attend our 1 st guardianship and scam seminar.

Folk Legacy Trio Returns to Sun City MacDonald Ranch
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
An unknown and unpublicized trio hit the
stage at Sun City MacDonald Ranch five years
ago and captured the hearts of an audience that
exploded to their feet after a 3-song performance.
They publicize themselves as the
World’s Oldest Boy Band, the Folk
Legacy Trio. The Trio brought
to the stage an ancestry of music
that shaped their audiences’ early
lives. George Grove and Rick
Dougherty combined for four
decades with the Kingston Trio;
Jerry Siggins carved his musical
monument with The Diamonds,
performing their hits Little Darlin’
and The Stroll.
After completing a month-long
Midwestern tour earlier this month,
the Trio returns to Sun City MacDonald Ranch November 18. See next
page for details.
New management brought changes to the Kingston Trio, a group
that had five Number One albums. Veterans Dougherty and Grove, who
combined for over fifty years of experience and a resume that boasted
audiences that numbered in the millions found themselves on the
outside looking in.
They agreed that retirement wasn’t in their future. An extensive
search led them to Siggins. Still there was apprehension whether they
could find an audience.
Grove, a longtime Henderson resident and Vegas Voice reader
gambled that this magazine would provide the answer. An email inviting
a Vegas Voice editor to Grove’s home
for a preview performance was
inadvertently overlooked; a followup
email elicited a response from the
embarrassed editor (that being me!)
and an obligatory promise to attend.
From the opening number, the
audience of friends and neighbors
was transported to the era of bell
bottoms, madras, tie-dye, incense
and musk. Hang down your head
Tom Dooley. Where have all the
flowers gone. He’s the man who
never returned. Emotions flooded
the audience.
Vegas Voice’s former show producer, Evan Davis, restructured an
already tightly scheduled Sun City MacDonald Ranch variety show to
include the Trio. The explosive audience reception reassured the three
that an appreciative audience still existed for their iconic music.
Although their performances are now in larger community centers,
churches and mid-size concert halls, they still look forward to return
to their Sun City MacDonald City audience where this iteration began.
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
In 1954 I was cast in a show called “The Ray
Milland Show: Meet Mr. McNulty.” The weekly
sit-com ran for 3 seasons; from
1953 until 1955.
The episode was called “The Christmas Story.” I
played a “bratty” orphan who comes to stay with the
McNulty’s.
When they take me to a Christmas party, I decide that
there is no such thing as Santa Claus. I spend the whole
evening trying to pull off Santa’s beard to prove it.
At the beginning of the show, I have a little raggedy
doll named Amy to whom I talk and tell my troubles to.
At the party, Santa gives me a package, and when I open
it, it’s now a beautiful new Amy - no longer raggedy
and now wearing a new dress!
Santa then leaves, and in walks the guy who Mr. McNulty had hired
to play Santa, apologizing for being late! It was such a sweet story, and
one that might not work in today’s world, but this was the 50s, and
things back then were a lot simpler and innocent.
The Christmas Story
November 2023
I loved working with Ray Milland. He won the Academy Award for
best actor in 1945 for his performance in “The Lost Weekend.” Milland
got that role by default since Cary Grant turned it down.
He is the only recipient of an Oscar to have uttered not a single word
during his acceptance speech, opting to simply “bow”
his appreciation before casually exiting the stage!
I feel so fortunate to have worked with so many
wonderful people in my career, but sadly, in a way, I wish
I could have appreciated them a little more at the time.
I guess when you are just eleven years old it’s hard to
understand that they are famous.
To me, they were just ordinary people, but perhaps
that’s a good thing too.
Ray Milland died of cancer at age 81 in 1986. He was
truly a dear man and a joy to work with.
Until next time, remember: You are never too old to
set another goal, or to dream a new dream.
recall as a child being afraid sometimes. I
I always knew if I could get home I would be
okay.
Even in a bad dream
running from a monster, if I made it home, I
would be safe. That’s what Israel is to a Jew – it
is our home. The one place, no matter what else
happens in the world, we can go and be safe.
If there is another Holocaust or any antisemitic
threat, we can get to Israel and be home. That is
why Israel has the “right of return” for Jews.
This does not diminish my love and pride for
America which is my home. Both my parents
were born here, and I was reminded many times
growing up that my maternal grandfather said
that the best thing he ever did for his family was
to come to America.
There is no better place than the USA, the place I love. Lately, however,
my sense of feeling safe is diminishing.
There are centuries of evidence of treatment of Jews who have been
forced to flee from their homes, with no place to go and no one who
wanted them. Until 1948.
BEHIND THE VILLAGE PUB in ANTHEM
My grandmother, Lizzie Menzer
with Chaim Weitzman who was the
first president of the State of Israel.
Then Jews finally had their homeland returned to them. I don’t love
America any less. It is like having multiple children. Each is special
and all are loved equally.
My paternal grandmother helped form the State
of Israel. She worked tirelessly to raise money
through the Women’s Zionist Organization to
know that Jews would once and for all have a
place to be free.
Jews have always known that we cannot stop
antisemitism. So, the alternative is to have a
home when that monster rears its ugly head.
But now, my friend questions whether it is safe
to go outside wearing a Star of David (one that
she has worn every day for years) since it could
make her a target. Why does my daughter now
have to be afraid to attend Shabbat Services on
Friday evening?
Why do Jews have to live their lives differently simply because they
are Jewish? We live in America, but the reality is there are terrorists
everywhere and they have targeted Jews.
The heinous acts in Israel leave me speechless and broken-hearted.
After World War II, Jews said Never Again – yet here we are – hiding in
fear simply because of our religion.
What strikes me as so unbelievable is that many non-Jews don’t
think this affects them. Not only do terrorists hate Jews, but they hate
Americans too – don’t you remember 9/11?
Israel is little Satan and America is the great Satan.
A few years ago, an acquaintance admitted that she knew little about
the Holocaust because, she said “I’m not Jewish.” She was shocked
to learn that the Nazis not only annihilated 6 million Jews, but an
additional 7 million non-Jews.
That’s right – Priests and Nuns, mentally and physically infirm,
gypsies, Poles and other Slavic people, Jehovah’s witnesses, LGBTQ,
those of opposing political views and those that tried to help Jews.
Granted, they were not all from one ethnic group, so the ramifications
were not felt as harshly but certainly all those lives had meaning too.
If you are complacent to think that since you do not live in Israel or
that you are not Jewish, then the violence in the Middle East does not
affect you, think again. Does a savage really care who they decapitate?
It can be lonely being Jewish because many folks just don’t relate.
They live their comfortable lives and never think that when they go out
in public wearing a crucifix necklace, they will be targeted because of
it.
Jews do not have that luxury.
I will not live in fear. Yes, I will be cognizant of my surroundings, but
I will not stop wearing my Star of David and I will not stay home. When
the survivors of the Holocaust said Never Again, it was left to future
generations to make sure that promise was kept.
I am proud to be Jewish. I am proud that my daughters are proud
and love Israel too and wish they could be there to help. I am the
namesake of that grandmother that worked
Passwords
By: Heather Latimer / Heather’s Self-Help Tips
Security protection on the Internet is essential
when conducting business since almost every
business will ask for a password. All too often,
you quickly fabricate something without forethought because of the
annoyance factor.
You must have a strong password to keep the cyber scammers out.
You can achieve this by having at least 8-10 characters from a mixture
of consonants, vowels, numbers, and oddments such as question marks
and asterisks.
You can start with real words COX/WHO then, by adding, substituting
and deleting make those into a lower-case senseless jumble. Example:
CW2*OXET!WHQ @GMAIL.COM.
Never use your family surname or the nickname of a grandchild,
a legitimate address, or phone number. Listing on any of your own
devices and accounts is not recommended so you might want to bypass
Password Storage Managers when it pops up.
The same deterrent relates to placing the same password on
everything. That would also make it simple for cyber scammers to
break in, steal your identity and spend your money.
The safest method is to use a pen or pencil to list all of your passwords
in a paper notebook, or in a purchased “Password Book” from Amazon
for $5. When you are bored and have nothing challenging to do, you
might actually enjoy concocting fresh variations in readiness for the
moment you need one.
Be sure to choose a hiding place for all that irreplaceable information,
far from any of your devices and, most important, tell your executor
where it is.
Farewell and New Beginnings
By: Liz Palmer / NSG
It’s time for new beginnings, for both the
Nevada Senior Games and yours truly.
After being selected Executive Director in 2019
and enjoying four years of bringing Fitness
For The Fun Of It to seniors in our community I’ve resigned my
position to pursue other interests and spend more time with my family,
including my very adorable
grandchildren.
I’ll miss all the fun
and excitement of the
Games, but I feel good
knowing we’ve added
two very well-qualified
individuals to our staff.
Joyce Rohrbacher
is our new Executive Director. Joyce
is originally from Illinois and moved to Las Vegas in 2017. She also
has a strong background in both the hospitality industry and office
management. She’s excited to be a part of our organization.
Roland Cooper is our new Games Director. Roland and his wife
Deborah moved to Henderson in 2018. Roland is a veteran of the
United States Air Force. He competed for Parkland Jr College in track
and field and has competed in previous year’s Senior Games. Roland is
passionate about contributing to the success of NSG, advancing quickly
from Board Member to Games Director.
Thank you for allowing me to share the excitement and news about
the Nevada Senior Games in The Vegas Voice.
Why was it necessary to add that, as
if the conflict, so far away, really has
nothing to do with them? If not for that,
do they not feel affected at all?
The Diaspora is real. Jews have
been scattered for centuries and the
abomination towards us is real.
Anti-American hatred is real. ISIS and
Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists are real.
Trivia Fun!
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
Let’s just be silly and enjoy some trivia for a
change. As we go into the holiday season, we
all need a little distraction from the realities of the
world these days.
My friend Diana looks up everything! She sends me stuff and ideas
all the time. Since it’s Thanksgiving and I can’t think of anything
about turkeys, here we go:
“Over a Barrel” comes from the days before CPR. A drowning
victim would be placed over a barrel and rolled back and forth in an
effort to empty the lungs of water. It rarely worked so if you are “over
a barrel,” you are in
deep trouble.
“Barge In” refers to
freight being moved
along on barges along
the Mississippi pushed
by steamboats. Since
they were hard to
control, they often
would swing into piers
or other boats and the
expression “barged
in” was born.
“A Shot of Whiskey”
cost the same as a .45
cartridge for a six-gun.
So, if a cowboy was
low on cash, he would
give the bartender a
cartridge in exchange
for a drink, hence a
“shot” of whiskey.
“Riff Raff” refers
to the travel from north to south on the Mississippi where travel on
the riverboats was too expensive so many travelled on rafts. They were
considered cheap and everything else had the right of way. The steering
oar was called a “riff” and this became “riff-raff” implying low class.
The King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache.
Walt Disney was afraid of mice!
A duck’s quack doesn’t echo. No one knows why.
American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one olive
from each salad served in first class. (Really?)
No piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times. Go ahead.
We can wait.
So I have now spent my time folding paper in half, pricing olives,
pulling out decks of cards and asking Alexa to quack like a duck. It is
still much better than watching the news… and I’m good with that.
Hug your loved ones, celebrate life and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
O by Cirque Du Soleil Endures
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Want a spectacular performance in a grand
setting? Then see Cirque Du Soleil’s “O”
at the Bellagio. In a town that turns shows over
and out in short order, this aquatic
masterpiece has endured for 25 years,
selling more than 19 million tickets.
A 1.5 million gallon tank with a
retractable cover is the centerpiece of
the production. There are expert divers,
synchronized swimmers, aerial acrobats,
and amazing contortionists performing
in the waters and at startling heights
high above the man-made lake. They
appear and disappear from the massive stage as the water literally
appears and disappears as well.
The production is surreal, the cast is huge (77), and there are
precision performances that will at times keep you on the edge of
your seat. You look up and see acrobats standing on a suspended ship
constructed of steel bars.
Then they leap off into the water. Or launch into an acrobatic routine
which has them sailing from one spot – or person to another.
The show begins with low key comedic routines in front of the huge
stage. Clowns in the audience endeavoring to draw you away from
the outside world and into the acts that will soon amaze, amuse, and
entertain you.
Then the red curtain opens to some alternate universe. The occasional
verbiage is foreign, vaguely familiar, but unidentifiable.
The performers are at one time or
another above our heads, all over the
stage, in the aisles, or in the water. They
are balancing, jumping, and diving.
There is synchronized swimming and
synchronized diving.
There is no script, little verbiage,
no familiar songs being song, In fact,
no singing and no story line. There
is simply entertainment by Olympic
quality performers.
Take the plunge and see O by Cirque Du Soleil nightly Wednesdays
A Good Deed
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
bumped into an elderly neighbor the other day.
I She asked if I’d go to a senior’s exercise class
with her.
“It’s easy, we sit in chairs and exercise. You’ll enjoy it!”
I started to roll my eyes but remembered the number that popped up
on the scale when I last weighed myself. Maybe this would be a good
deed and a way to break into exercising again. I agreed to go.
The class started slowly. The ladies wiggled in their fine folding
chairs. I imitated them until things got complicated.
They began to lift their feet, marching to nowhere. Left, right! Left,
right! Then they waved their arms. Forward, backward, up and down.
Left, right! Left right!
Really? I was winded with all that foot and arm action.
If that wasn’t bad enough, they began to make circles with their
wrists as they waved their arms. Then they wiggled their fingers, too.
Kennedy Assassination
Ended Camelot
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Before his death, President John F. Kennedy
prophesied, “A nation reveals itself not only
by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors, the men it
remembers.”
Those old enough to remember 1963 recall where they were and
what happened on Friday, November 22 nd - the President was shot. All
too unreal, it was called the crime of our time.
The assassination of the President of the United States conjured up
history books and President Lincoln’s assassination a century before.
To this day, half of all Americans believe there was a conspiracy
surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy. It remains the
twentieth century’s most recognized crime.
What happened to my coordination? One foot up, one foot down,
arms wide, circles and wiggles. I never got it because they sped up the
tempo!
Some of the old ladies smiled as I strained to unwind my pretzellike
body. My right leg was floundering helplessly somewhere in midair,
and my left arm was wrapped around my neck. I struggled to look
composed, but it didn’t happen!
Suddenly the instructor clapped, and everyone began to pivot their
heads like those bobble dolls you see in souvenir stores. I followed until
I got dizzy, and my neck creaked - loudly!
Fearing the stupid bobbing would permanently injure my neck, I
stopped.
When would this end? Not yet apparently! Another clap and the class
stood and grabbed skipping ropes. OMG! That was it!
I hightailed out of there and never looked back! I could hardly walk
for a week after that class!
I guess I have to find an exercise plan that doesn’t involve a room
full of grey-haired seniors. They’re just too tough for me!
Maybe I’ll head back to the walking track. At least it has a slow lane
for those of us who need it
November 2023
Americans had never before been glued to their TV sets as they were
that heart-rending weekend. For many, 1963 was a good year except
for the JFK tragedy, but grief for a popular president pulled our country
together as nothing else did in the Vietnam era.
At 43-years-old, President Kennedy was the youngest American
president ever elected and first president born in the twentieth century.
He succeeded Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was then the oldest ever to
hold the office of President.
President Kennedy had intelligence and charm. His assassination not
only took the life of our youthful, popular leader, it forever altered the
way we see ourselves. Post-World War II and Cold War era Americans
lived with an innocence that was everlastingly changed.
Kennedy compellingly opened his Inaugural address with, “We
observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom” and
ended with, “Here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.” His
speech ranks as one of the 20 th century’s most stirring.
Following the Presidents death, Mrs. Kennedy told reports that her
husband loved this song from Camelot: “Don’t let it be forgot, That
once there was a spot, For one brief shining moment
That was known as Camelot.”
For the opening of the John F. Kennedy Library, October 20, 1979, Ted
Kennedy said of his late brother, “It was all so brief. Those thousand
days are like an evening gone. But they are not forgotten.”
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.

WHAT IS TRIGGER FINGER?
TRIGGER FINGER - NOW CURED IN THE OFFICE!
By:Ryan Grabow, MD / Help My Hands!
Dr. Grabow is back with another exciting
“Help My Hands!”article.
Trigger Finger is a very common condition that causes
catching or locking in your finger or thumb when trying
to open your hand from a closed fist. While sometimes
it may be painless, trigger fingers are commonly painful
and there is tenderness in the palm of your hand in line
with the affected finger or thumb. It is typically worse
in the morning but can also occur throughout the day.
It is caused by thickening of one of the tendons to your finger and
narrowing of one of the bands that guides the tendon. If left untreated
finger stiffness and loss of grip is common.
HOW IS TRIGGER FINGER DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of trigger finger does not require special testing or
imaging studies. Typically your history of finger catching or locking
and our physical exam is all that is necessary for diagnosis.
HOW IS TRIGGER FINGER TREATED?
For most patients, the initial treatment for trigger finger is a steroid
(cortisone) injection. Approximately 70% of the time this will cure your
trigger finger. If it does not completely go away or it comes back
after the first shot, a second injection may be recommended. If your
trigger finger returns after two injections - surgery is the only solution!
STANDARD TRIGGER FINGER SURGERY
Trigger finger surgery involves cutting the band that causes the finger
or thumb to catch. Once this band is released your trigger finger is
cured. Most surgeons have to perform this surgery in an operating
rooml with the patient sedated. You typically have to stop your
medications and get medical clearance.
ADVANCED TREATMENT - NO SEDATION, MICRO INCISION,
Abstract Thought #22
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
If you didn’t mean it, then you shouldn’t have
said it.
“Relationships can be tricky! It doesn’t matter
if they are friendships, love affairs, or work
relationships.
Sometimes things just flow along like a lazy river, but other times,
under pressure, they can get complicated. Under pressure, our brains
sometimes turn off, and we say stupid stuff!
In the heat of the moment, we say many things, not all kind or
truthful. They just come out, sometimes, without warning. Through
fear, anger, or misunderstanding, the truth can become a clouded mess.
Then what? Well, there are several options.
26
November 2023
Option one would be to cover the lie with more lies and double
down on the hurtful words. Once the ball begins to roll downhill, the
momentum just continues to carry us.
In fact, with all of that momentum, it becomes more and more
difficult to stop the pattern and reverse course, and the damage it
causes grows. The problem with that is, it gets harder and harder to
remember the truth if you’re not telling the truth.
Option two would be to justify it by qualifying the hurtful words as
“heat of the moment.” “I didn’t really mean it…I was just mad.”
That’s wonderful - if it never happens again! Very few of those
moments of temporary insanity are one-time incidents though, and
predictable patterns develop.
Another option would be to dismiss it as a misinterpretation of the
words said and use obfuscation as a tool. Some folks can get quite
creative with semantics following misspoken words, blaming the
listener for the words heard and not themselves for the words spoken.
“I didn’t really mean that… you heard it wrong,” or: “You’re
blowing it all out of proportion,” again, pointing the finger back at
the listener.
The best option of all, of course, is to honestly identify the words said
and fess up. In the end, the truth usually comes out in most cases, and
it’s always best when the truth comes from the person that spoke the
words they “didn’t mean.” Once you clear the air, don’t do it again!”
Strength Training & Minerals in Preventing & Treating Osteoporosis
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones,
making them more prone to fractures and
breaks. It primarily affects
older adults and postmenopausal women.
The Importance of Strength Training:
Increased Bone Density: Strength training,
also known as resistance exercise, involves lifting
weights or using resistance bands to challenge your
muscles. These exercises put stress on your bones,
prompting them to adapt and become denser.
Muscle Strength and Balance: In addition
to strengthening bones, strength training helps improve muscle
strength and balance. Strong muscles provide added support to your
bones, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.
Joint Health: Strength training also benefits joint health. It helps
maintain the flexibility and mobility of your joints, reducing the risk
of falls and injuries.
The Role of Mineral Supplements:
Calcium: Calcium is a crucial mineral for bone health. It forms the
structural component of bones and is necessary for bone remodeling.
Adequate calcium, with all the mineral co-factors, helps maintain bone
density and strength.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is essential for the body to absorb calcium
effectively. Without sufficient vitamin D, calcium absorption is
compromised, which can lead to weakened bones.
Spending time in the sun and consuming vitamin D-rich foods or
supplements can help maintain healthy levels of
this vitamin.
Magnesium: Magnesium is another mineral
that plays a vital role in bone health. It assists in
calcium absorption and helps convert vitamin D
into its active form.
Other Minerals: While calcium, vitamin
D, and magnesium are primary players in bone
health, other minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, and zinc also
contribute to overall bone strength.
Bottom line!
Incorporating strength training into your fitness routine and
maintaining proper mineral intake through diet and supplements are
powerful tools in preventing and managing osteoporosis.
Pumpkins Are Everywhere
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
It’s now November and another year coming to a
close. And I see pumpkin this…pumpkin that.
Am I the only
one who is not thrilled for pumpkin
in almost everything you see?
It’s now in coffee, drinks, cakes,
etc. everywhere you turn it’s
“pumpkin spice” or some derivative.
I even heard on the news there will
be garbage bags with a pumpkin
scent! WOW!
I admit I like pumpkin but not
in most of my food! I even tried
making a cake with one box of spice
cake mix and one can of 100% pure
pumpkin. It was just ok - but pretty
mushy.
I ate a little of it and threw the rest out! I really hate wasting food,
but it was not good.
Even my veterinarian suggested to put a small spoon of 100%
pure pumpkin in my kitties’ wet food to help with their digestion. It
worked. BUT I can just imagine my two felines thinking, “Really Mom,
PUMPKIN?”
I did make some pumpkin muffins with most of the can of pure
pumpkin so they didn’t come out as mushy as the cake. I have them
frozen and will take them out when I’m hungry for something and
have nothing else to eat for dessert.
So, for all you pumpkin spice
fanatics, good for you. I’m sure
you really enjoy it but I’m just in
the minority. I will continue having
some pumpkin spice in small
portions - maybe in a small cake or
muffin.
But I draw the line for having it
in my coffee. I’m one who likes my
coffee nice and strong and plain so
I can enjoy the richness of the taste.
Maybe this fall I’ll attempt to try
some other variations of cake mixes with other spices, but I’ve given up
on pumpkin spice.
You never realize how much you use your
shoulder until it is painful and you cannot
use it. Shoulder pain has
many causes and many people will experience
shoulder pain as they get older.
Many people experiencing shoulder pain
are told that they have a rotator cuff injury.
The rotator cuff is made of four muscles –
teres minor, supraspinatus, infraspinatus and
subscapularis.
These muscles and their tendons both help
the shoulder move and secure the shoulder
joint in place. The shoulder is one of the
most mobile joints in the body. This mobility,
however, also makes it one of the most likely joints to be damaged.
A rotator cuff injury is usually due to damage to the tendons of one
of the mentioned four muscles. This damage may be minor and will
heal by itself over time, or it may be major which requires surgery to
reattach the tendon.
Another potential cause of pain is bursitis. A bursa is a fluid filled
sack that serves as a type of shock absorber between two structures in
the musculoskeletal system. It is designed to keep them from damaging
each other by repetitive rubbing against each other.
28
Shoulder Pain
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
November 2023
Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa due to excessive wear and
tear. Because the joint is continuously used, the bursitis may not resolve
on its own and may need acupuncture or an interjection of an antiinflammatory.
Arthritis is another common cause of
shoulder pain. There are many kinds of
arthritis but most forms can be broken down
into two types.
The first type is due to wear and tear on the
shoulder joint which is called osteoarthritis.
The second type is due to inflammatory
processes damaging the joint which includes
rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. In
the case of arthritis, intervention focusses on
reducing the inflammation and helping the
tissues of the joint to heal.
Shoulder injuries, as in all injuries to a body part, the longer the
injury is allowed to progress, the longer and more difficult it is to treat.
If you begin to experience pain in the shoulder, have it evaluated by a
medical professional.
What is the Color of Neutral?
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
Having attended several
Fashion shows this year
and checking out the new
color groups for the 2023 3rd
quarter, it’s exciting to see all the neutral colors that
are making an appearance.
That said, what are those interesting colors and
how can you bring them into your current wardrobe?
Simply put, a neutral color is one that lays in the
background and is not easy to notice. By stretching
one’s horizon, you can incorporate neutral colors
that’ll provide a mini makeover to your Fall lineup.
Beige, cappuccino, mushroom gray and taupe are
making a very big leap into even the most skeptical
individuals attire who perhaps, in the past may have
leaned towards navy, black and basic gray. When I
think of Falls neutrals, paired alongside some of my
personal favorites like burgundy, metallics, brown,
terracotta and yes, a true fan of navy, it takes me back to the 70s as
a young teenager who wasn’t quite versed yet in color pairing, but
thought the brown culottes paired with a terracotta sweater for class
pictures was the ultimate chic look.
Leaning into the new Fall colors, it’s evident
that most of the stores are showing these staples in
either a solid or a print. Leopard print is having a
fashion moment once again, as they say everything
that’s old is new again. So, ladies don’t throw out
the shirts and sweaters since the contrast of these
paired with taupe or khaki pants presents an
inspiring Fall/neutral look.
Not forgetting the guys, neutrals are everywhere
in men’s fashion as well. A daring color of brown/
gold pants in the men’s department at Dillard’s
showed up a few weeks ago, paired with a lovely
burgundy button down shirt. Regardless of age, the
neutral colors are showing up in suits and casual
attire, for both men and women.
“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the
emotions.” quote by Pablo Picasso.
Hair, our crowning glory - until it’s not.
I’ve never really done
much with my hair. Since
the age of 14, I’ve pretty
much worn it the same way for 54 years and it has
always been brown.
I tried Sun-In 47 years ago, fell asleep pool side,
waking up to a top layer of bright orange hair.
I also tried professional highlights once. They
turned a brassy red color and not very attractive so
I pretty much left it alone, until it started getting
gray.
Always trying new-at-home colors, no peroxide,
no ammonia, I held the gray at bay. I’ve never
been afraid of temporary colors because they
fade away and are easy to cover and I always use
variations of brown, so not much risk.
As I shared last month, I tried a brunette color
conditioner. I didn’t follow directions and left it on way longer than I
should have.
I ended up with a very red head of hair. The strangest part was all my
gray strands were really red and sparkled.
Although this should have been temporary, no matter what I did, I
Don’t Be Like Me - Part II
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
couldn’t wash it out, I couldn’t cover it up and it never faded.
Enter, Matrix Dark Envy, green shampoo! After reading all the
reviews I proceeded with caution. The first 5 times I used it, I thought
there was a little change but I was getting nowhere
fast so I went for the big guns, the green hair mask!
I used the mask for the minimum time at first
and then longer the following two uses. It worked!
It did turn my new gray hair growth a bit of a
green color which I was able to cover with my
normal color.
My hair is now very dark brown, as any of the
natural highlights are gone but at least my orange
glow has been camouflaged. I have no idea what
will happen as this fades.
Some words of warning if you ever need to use
this: Wear gloves and do not get it on anything,
it will stain! It will also darken the grout in your
shower. If you have light hair, highlights, blonde
or gray, do not use this, it will give you green hair.
Here’s wishing you, only good hair days!
The Insomnia Games
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
am not a competitive person.
I If I even so much as win at Scrabble, my
inclination is to leap over the board, hug the
loser, and say “sorry.” Yet, each morning, upon opening my eyes, I find
myself engaged in a verbal duel.
I’m not exactly sure when this began.
Perhaps it started on that critical birthday
when one’s bladder decides to stop
cooperating with one’s need for hydration
and becomes demanding during the
night in two-hour intervals. Which I
think is very spiteful.
I’m reminded of my former dogs. When
they aged, I’d remove their water bowls no
later than 5:00 pm to prevent them from
awakening me in the middle of the night.
While I don’t have to go outside to pee,
I’m definitely considering rolling back happy hour.
What’s referred to as “a good night’s sleep” has become elusive.
My husband swears he hasn’t slept through the night since he was 10
months old. His parents are both deceased so I cannot confirm this
report, but I do know that a factor in my Sleepus Interruptus is the
glow of his iPad at some ungodly hour.
As a result of this pernicious insomnia, we’ve become quite
competitive, constantly challenging each other as to who has had the
worst night. A typical morning conversation might go something like
this: “How did you sleep?”
“Terrible.” “Yeah, well, I slept worse.”
“I woke at 3:00 and haven’t slept since.” “So? I woke at 2:50.”
“No, you didn’t. I saw you. You were
sound asleep.” “I was pretending.” “So
how come you were snoring?”
“I had to go to the bathroom three
times.” “I went four....”
“Yeah, well, I had leg cramps.” “I
know. I heard you marching around the
bedroom.” “No, you didn’t. You were
sleeping.”
The verbal jousting is halted by the
current dog, who is covering his ears, and
our need for coffee, requiring someone to
leave the bed, usually me.
I’m sure competitive not-sleeping isn’t
limited to us. At this stage of life, sleep deprivation may be the latest
status age-related deficit, edging out contenders like number of body
part replacement, knowing the best doctors, and HDL scores.
Instead, we discuss the virtues of Ambien over Lunesta, or how
spraying lavender on your pillowcase is very soothing and will lull you
to dreamland. I tried that. It resulted in a damp pillowcase and an
allergy attack.
As for me, I’m tired, and want to withdraw from the game. I’d gladly
relinquish the gold medal in exchange for a few nights of solid, restful
sleep.
And when my husband laments in the morning about how bad the
night was, I’d gently pat his hand, commiserate, and try to refrain from
gloating. After all, I’m not a competitive person.
EV Car Purchase Instant Rebates & Credits
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
If you’re looking into purchasing an electric
vehicle, you may or may not know that certain
EVs come with
the possibility of a federal tax credit
up to $7,500. In addition, there can
be state and local rebates as well, all
of which are designed to entice you
into purchasing an electric vehicle or
a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as your next
mode of transportation.
For example, in Nevada, low-income
customers may qualify for an additional
$2,500 rebate for the purchase of a new
or even used EV. This is a great bonus, because EVs are priced higher
than regular vehicles, but with a $10,000 credit/rebate, it brings it
closer in line with a gas-powered vehicle.
Currently, there are fewer than 30 models that qualify. Keep in mind,
however, that how much of a credit you get is based on a variety of
factors, such as the vehicle’s specifications, where it’s built, your taxable
income, and more.
This all means that you needed to have a discussion with your tax
accountant or CPA to see if an EV purchase makes sense tax wise as
well as fits your lifestyle. With that said, starting January 2024, that will
change.
The U.S. Treasury has issued a new guidance on how the $7,500 tax
credit can be used. To bring more EV buyers into the fold, the Treasury
Department now states that the $7,500
credit can be used as a point-of-sale
rebate.
What that means is you can transfer
the credits to a car dealership, effectively
lowering the vehicle’s purchase price
right there and then.
The EV buyer still would need to
prove that they meet income limits to
qualify for the credit, and if they don’t,
they will have to repay whatever credit they received when filing their
taxes. For new vehicles, the adjusted gross income limit is $300,000 for
married couples, and $150,000 for individuals.
To get more information on who qualifies, the credit amount, and
which vehicles are included, visit: irs.gov/credits-deductions and select
Clean Vehicle Credits under Credits for Individuals menu.
It’s that time of year when your giving dollar
goes into action. The term represents your
donations to a nonprofit or not-for-profit effort or
organization. Some of us use our giving dollar throughout the year and
others only during the holiday season.
I get a lot of questions this time of year about giving. Many people
don’t know how to direct their donations, especially with so many ways to
offer support. Annual giving can mean year-round support for a variety of
needs and efforts, while targeted giving can fund a specific event.
Giving can
be a monetary
donation or given
in-kind, which
means providing
a service or
product you or
your company
offers or produces.
Also, giving can be
simply raising awareness and spreading the word about the nonprofit.
The best thing you can do for your nonprofit is volunteer with them.
Know the organization you’re supporting and why you’re supporting
it. Here are eight tips.
1. Ask for their brochure
2. Ask to tour their facility
3. Ask to attend a board meeting
4. Ask if there’s a “needs” list and donate for that list
5. Ask to see their money in action (visit a program)
6. Ask how the money’s allocated
7. Ask about their criteria for volunteers
8. Ask if you’re able to target where/how your donation is used
(operations, food, children, programs)
Make giving a family and friends affair. Create a collective giving group
that allows your tribe to put their giving dollars together and determine
where they want to make the greatest impact.
Ask your group for suggestions of deserving organizations and discuss
why they deserve your donation. Then, select one or two.
Get your business involved. Ask your employees where they think the
company’s giving dollar should go. Employees feel their opinions matter
when they’re included in the decision making.
Company giving efforts include employees donating time, employees
collecting goods and donations, and employers helping with and
organization’s efforts.
Use your giving dollar with purpose and passion. Fulfill your desire to
give with intentional, focused support for the efforts you love.
Genealogy & Family Stories
During the Holidays
By: Craig Smith / Exploring Your Roots
As the holiday season approaches, it’s a time
for reuniting with loved ones, sharing meals, and
passing on cherished family memories. Traditional
and joyful gatherings is the perfect time to explore
your family’s history through genealogy and pass on family stories to
your children and grandchildren.
Researching your family tree and sharing your findings can be a
deeply meaningful and personal present, not only to yourself, but for
your family. Consider creating a beautifully crafted family tree chart
or a scrapbook filled with old photos and stories and present it to your
relatives as a surprise.
Connecting Across Generations: Genealogy and family stories
have a unique ability to bridge generational gaps. They provide an
opportunity for younger family members to connect with their heritage
and learn about their ancestors. This intergenerational exchange fosters
a sense of belonging and helps younger generations appreciate the
struggles and triumphs of their forebears. So where do you start? How
about the old fashion way: Go to the library.
For example, the Paseo Verde Library in Henderson has dedicated an
entire room for genealogy research called “The Heritage Room.” On
many days the Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society has volunteers
available to help you begin your family history search. The Library also
Before Winter Arrives
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
November marks the conclusion of this
year’s growing season. Your planting, soil
preparation, and upgrades to your landscape and
gardens should be completed.
There are several tasks remaining that you should complete now
before winter arrives.
With the arrival of cooler weather and reduced hours
of sunlight, much of your landscape has now become
dormant. Deciduous trees have lost their leaves and your
flowering plants and bushes have stopped blooming.
It’s now time to begin pruning away dead and
entangled branches and flowers as well as unwanted
“suckers” around stems and tree trunks. Once leaves
have fallen, you can, if necessary, reshape tree and bush
canopies.
By pruning off dead, damaged or unwanted limbs and branches,
you will encourage proper airflow and increased sunlight during the
winter months promoting better growth in the Spring. Palm trees,
however, should not be pruned anymore this season since the fronds
protect the center of the trees (where new growth takes place) from
strong winds and cold temperatures. For smaller palms, wrap the top
portion with burlap to protect them from frost and wind damage.
Plants such as roses and lantanas should be heavily pruned once
flowering has completely stopped. This ongoing task may even
continue into early December!
Prune rose bushes leaving only 1/3 of the stems remaining. The
more you prune now, the more robust will be the growth in the
Spring. Remember that pruned flowering bushes will initially require
more time in the Spring to start flowering again.
Succulents can continue to be pruned anytime throughout the
year. They should, however, not be given any additional
irrigation from mid-November through early
February.
The root systems of succulents “shut down” during
winter dormancy. Water will accumulate around their
roots and will not be absorbed. This will lead to root rot
and plant death!
Finally, remove dead leaves and debris from around
plants. This will prevent moisture and “organic matter”
buildup that encourages insect and rodent infestation. You should
also apply insecticides around the perimeter of your house to keep
these “unwanted visitors” outdoors as colder weather arrives.
Generational Travel
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
always seem to be writing about our “Bus to the
I Boat” cruises. These 50+ “age-qualified” trips
are always fun and offer great convenience for our
Vegas Voyagers.
Truth be told, it is not my favorite form of travel. Call me masochistic
or maybe “nuts”, but I love generational travel.
I enjoy family vacations with my kids,
and yes, even my grandkids. It’s the best
way to make family
memories.
When traveling with
the various generations
there is an inherent issue - finding
the vacation that will satisfy all
the “groups” needs. There has to be
something for everyone to do, especially the grandkids.
If they become bored or uninterested in the trip, the whole vacation
can become
an unhappy
experience.
Here are a few
suggestions to help
make the perfect
“generations”
family trip.
If a cruise is
the desired family
vacation, make
sure you pick a
cruise line that has something for everyone. For example, while Royal
Caribbean might not be my first choice for seniors, it would be for a
family vacation.
There have great shows, water parks and features for everyone. And
while Princess Cruise Line is great for adults, there might not be
enough for the younger pre-teens to do.
Keeping with the cruises, make sure there is a lot of fun stuff to do
in the ports of call. A great beach always seems to do the trick for all
involved.
A trip to the Mayan ruins might not be the ticket for little ones.
Research ports for things to do for all.
As for land based vacations, it is equally important to make sure the
grandkids will be kept busy. An all-inclusive land based vacation in
Mexico, Jamaica or Punta Cana usually works well as most resorts have
great pools and beaches with age appropriate activities planned every
day.
Land based city or cultural tours must be carefully planned. One too
many museums or church visits in Europe for example might put the
younger ones over the edge.
Hope this helps you plan your next memory making family vacation.
And I didn’t even talk about that obligatory trip to Disneyland.
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Watching or reading the news today is like
watching a horror show! Everywhere
we turn all that is heard is what is wrong with
everyone else.
From arguing politics, to expressing serious intolerance for another’s
beliefs, including the dreadful word, hate. Wars, despair and death are
now the common denominator of what we all hear and see every single
day.
The question now becomes, what can be done to change the
mindsets of intolerance to one of tolerance? Is it possible for one person
to change the world?
In some rare cases, yes - such as the late Mother Teresa and I’m sure
some others. But the real question one should be asking is what can
you do about it?
The answer is not as complex as one may think. Intolerance or
tolerance comes from within each of us and is reflected in the manner
we conduct our lives and attitudes every day.
You may not be able to change the world but, you can change your
world! Every contact you make with another person can have a positive
or negative impact.
By choosing to be courteous and friendly (even to those you don’t
know) the impact can and will have a positive cascading effect on
everyone else he/she comes in contact with. One side effect is that being
positive enrichens your life.
Imagine that? A life lived instead of endured.
If more and more of us conduct ourselves with a more respectful
attitude toward each other, sooner or later, the news may become more
uplifting. But, until and if we change our mindsets to embrace that
kind of behavior, nothing will change for the better!
Karma Clearing
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Ironically, you don’t get punished for your sins.
They punish you since what you do unto others,
(good or bad) comes back to bite you tenfold.
In the West, Karma means “cause and effect.” In the East, however,
Karma comprises three (some ideologies say four) components:
Prabodha Karma embodies the physical senses. It is also partially
connected to Sanchita Karma, which past Karmas manifest. Our
current actions and decisions fuel the Agami Karma.
Karma is our teacher who forces us to experience what we do to
others. Albert Einstein said, “You cannot solve a problem with the same
mind that created it.” Karma begins with intentions.
Clearing your Karma starts with your willingness to refine your
thoughts and attitude to observe your situation from a different
perspective. Only
then will you be
able to watch
and understand
the repercussions
of your actions.
But can Karma
be forgiven?
Karmas’
symbol is the
endless knot,
representing the eternal interlinking of cause and effect. It is a unilateral
experience that you cannot wish away. The only way to dissolve it is
through knowledge, which leads to awareness and understanding, and
then you will want to make changes.
The intensity of each experience always depends on the extremity
of thoughts and actions perpetuated. It also intensifies each time with
perpetual offenses. While it is human to err, moving forward with
remorse helps you be a better person and minimizes any new Karma
when acting accordingly.
To minimize the effects of your past bad Karma, you must
1. Scan your life. Pay attention to recurring obstacles and patterns,
i.e., regrets, relationships, financial, physical, and mental issues, etc.
2. Eliminate toxic people.
3. Take responsibility for your mistakes.
4. Nurture your soul.
5. Defy and challenge your weaknesses.
6. Choose your words wisely.
7. Design new actions according to Karmic Law including:
a. Be grateful for every experience, both the good and the bad.
b. Act with love towards everyone no matter what they’ve done.
c. Check your motives and ensure they come from a place of love
for yourself and others AND.
Watch your attitude because negative thoughts create angry energy
directed at you.
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
Everyone’s back in school, including me. No,
not as in taking classes to become, say, a
doctor, but as in teaching classes so that I can
afford to go to the doctor.
I’m very excited to return to the classroom, especially to teaching
middle and high school
students, because I’ve
been totally out of the
loop on what’s cool
nowadays...for example,
it’s probably not cool to
say “nowadays.”
There were several
things that precipitated
my return to the
classroom as a substitute
teacher, things which
seem to be telling me
that Someone Up There
thinks it’s a good idea.
First of all, contrary
to popular belief (well,
contrary to a belief that
was popular with me)
writing newspaper/magazine columns does not mean instant fame
followed by incredible wealth. Of course, many columnists also write
books which may bring the incredible wealth - and I have been severely
lacking in such productions.
Which brings me to my second “sign” from above. I am submitting
a children’s book to a publisher this week, and I am scared to death
of being rejected! I thought I had the right frame of mind to handle
42
Following All the Signs Back to the Classroom
What A Show!
The cast from our Afternoon Affair show last month at Congregation
Ner Tamid. The show was a joint collaboration between The Vegas Voice,
As Steve Soiferman from Carnegie Heights proclaimed: “What a
rejections. Turns out I’m a tad bit of a whiny weenie wimp (that’s
alliteration; don’t tell me I can’t write!).
I mean, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity was probably rejected by all
the Theory publishers before he made it big, right? I’m sure he got stuff
like, “Hey, this was so close!” or “See if you can add some jokes in here
and we’ll take another look!” or “Sadly, we have way too many books
on relativity right now - how about one on the science of bubble wrap?”
(Plus, I’ve tried
all of those rejection
arguments on the
electric company at billpaying
time, and they
didn’t, shall we say, light
up over it [and that, my
dear, is called a “pun”]
I am a smokin‘ writer!).
The third sign came
when I was selling my
house because I could
no longer afford to
live in it. Having put a
deposit on some land
back when I had plans
to be rich and famous,
it was eventually time to
build or bail, so I was committed – or should have been. And, I had to
sell.
Now I’m back to earning the enormous salary one makes as a
teacher (Did you hear that? That was the sound of 5,000 teachers
simultaneously spewing their morning coffee down their fronts.).
And there was one last sign: several friends and colleagues in the
classroom are having babies. Not that I had anything to do with that,
but it does kill two birds with one childbirth.
My friends get a gorgeous, perfect little baby, and I get the substitute
jobs I need - and who knows there may be several of us “having a
bottle” at 2:00 a.m., if you catch my drift.
Of course, you know I’m only kidding, folks. Teachers never drink
(and there’s that sound again!). Honestly, I was really looking forward
to getting back to the classroom this year.
When I left full-time teaching, I felt almost as much guilt as if I
were leaving my own children and I needed to hurry home to see if
the babysitter had gotten into the liquor cabinet. Sure, most teachers I
know are just the folks I’d be happy to leave my children with, but just
like when you ask the sitter to read “Goodnight, Moon” to your child at
bedtime, it’s somehow not the same as when you do it.
So, I’m seriously having a blast this year! But I’ll make you kids a
promise - if my book gets published, the next seven months may be one
loooong recess!
Carolina. Readers may contact her - and order her new children’s
Wrangle Up Men With
Cowboys 4 Angels
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
Dating is never easy, and if you’re an older
woman, who’s divorced or widowed, it can be
hard to get back in the saddle when you want to rustle up a gentle
touch, a tender caress, or a sexy compliment.
According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 33 percent of
seniors aged 50 and older have tried using dating sites or apps including
DateMyAge, Elite Singles, Our Time, Senior Match, Silver Singles and
Zoosk.
Women, who want to rein in emotionally mature, well educated, and
articulate men, one Las Vegas escort service may be their best “dating”
arena.
Cowboys 4 Angels, https://cowboys4angels.com, offers access to
straight elite male escorts who are, according to its website, “selected
for their warmth, appearance, intelligence, humor and charm.” The
company boasts opportunities for exclusive male companionship as a
healthy distraction with no strings attached. The male companions are
strictly escorts and not to service a hot night in Vegas.
“Our services are basically for upscale women going to events,
wedding, and long trips,” Cowboys 4 Angels owner Garren James said
on his podcast.
In Las Vegas, hiring an escort is legal for companionship services
on dinner dates, at parties, on cruises, etc. If you decide to engage in
consensual sex, that’s fine too, as long as you don’t contract to have sex
and explicitly spend money for sex as a service.
Lauren Tallman is founder of the Erotic Writers Group of Las Vegas
and author of “Harem of the Dragon,” “Come Again?,” and “How
to Have an Affair and Not Get Caught.” Visit her website: laurentallman.com.
What a Celebration & Cake!
Our Lauren Tallman enjoyed a saucy celebration and a personalized
egans only eat plant-based foods. No animal meat. No dairy. No eggs. No honey.
(Honey comes from the tiny 'animal' critters called bees!) People are vegans for many
reasons: to eliminate cruelty to animals, to help the environment (animal agriculture takes a
toll on the earth) & because of the many health benefits. (Medical research finds Vegans have
less heart & brain disease, colon & lung cancer, diabetes, obesity & other debilitating
