My Vegas Voice partner Ray Sarbacker is retiring after 14 years<br />
with the publication.<br />
I met Ray at a business network meeting in the summer of 2009.<br />
He convinced this stubborn publisher to “get out of his way” and<br />
make him responsible regarding all graphics for the newspaper, now<br />
magazine. To my everlasting credit, I listened to him.<br />
He leaves The Vegas Voice with a bang – winning six national first<br />
place awards from the North American Mature Publishers Association<br />
(NAMPA) – the senior publishers trade association in the United States.<br />
Ray achieved awards for our front pages an astonishing six years<br />
in a row. In total, he designed 156 Vegas Voice front pages So please<br />
understand my boasting when I shouted that Ray is the number one<br />
graphic artist in Nevada.<br />
And for extra credit, besides his extraordinary skills and talent, I<br />

will always be grateful and proud for his exceptional character and<br />
principle.<br />
When political editor Rana Goodman first became aware of the<br />
guardianship scandal, Ray was an unmovable rock in demanding that<br />
we continue the investigation despite our then major advertisers (who<br />
we later learned had a “relationship” with certain private guardians)<br />
screaming that we “cease & desist” - or face financial failure<br />
His telling them to “go to hell” and the subsequent consequences<br />
nearly crippled The Vegas Voice but he was steadfast that the truth be<br />
told. If my Rana is the “face” of our guardianship reform efforts, he was<br />
certainly the “heart.”<br />
Make no mistake: I will miss Ray and I constantly yelling at each<br />
other. When I look back however at our Vegas Voice history and growth<br />
of our “little throw away paper” I realize what a fantastic talent (and<br />
most importantly, what an incredible friend) he has become.<br />
For that, Rana and I, along with our entire Vegas Voice family wish<br />
him and his Crystal a very long, healthy and happy retirement.<br />
