How Do Your Acquire Homestead Protection?
NRS 115 is the chapter in the Nevada Revised Statutes that concerns the homestead law. You will
need your parcel number and legal description to complete your Homestead form, and this
information can be found on your recorded deed. A homestead declaration is valid only for your
primary residence.
PROCEDURES FOR RECORDING A DECLARATION OF HOMESTEAD:
1. Complete the Homestead Declaration form. (The form must be typed or printed legibly in black
ink). Text cannot extend beyond the one-inch margins on all sides of the form.
2. Sign the form in the presence of a Notary Public.
3. Take the completed document to a Clark County Recorder’s office to be recorded:
Main Office
4. For information regarding the recording fees, contact the Recorder's Office at 702-455-4336 or
visit their website at www.clarkcountynv.gov/recorder.
The completed Homestead Declaration can also be mailed to the Recorder's main office. (The
Recorder's Office is unable to accept mailed documents for recording at the Northwest Office.)
WHAT THE LAW CURRENTLY PROVIDES:
When you record a Declaration of Homestead, Nevada law protects the equity in your home up to
$605,000 from general creditor claims (unpaid medical bills, bankruptcy, charge card debts,
business/personal loans, accidents) but would not preclude a seizure or forced sale of your
residence from general creditors if your equity exceeds the $605,000. A creditor may file suit and
can record a judgment lien against any real property you own. Recording a Declaration of
Homestead protects your principal residence up to the statutory maximum. For example, if the
value of your home is $645,000 and you have a first mortgage of $485,000 plus a second
mortgage of $10,000, the equity is $150,000.
WHAT IS NOT PROTECTED:
The Homestead law does not protect you against debts secured by a mortgage or deed of trust,
payment of taxes, IRS lien, mechanic's lien, child support or alimony payments.
If you need a homestead form, I would be happy to provide that to you. I can also provide you
with a copy of your recorded deed and/or your tax record, showing your parcel number and legal
description. I cannot give you legal advice though, so if you have any legal questions regarding
your homestead form, please consult your attorney.
“I Told You So!”
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
The above quote was from our “Guardian
Gladiator” Rana Goodman after a series of
clandestine meetings. Succinctly stated: “They’re
back!”
My Rana has maintained that the Guardianship
scandal, while corrected in many aspects, was far from
over. I, however, thought this issue was “dead.” I was
wrong.
Sadly, no matter how many times we try to kill this
evil creature, “somehow” the guardianship court and
lawyers (and it’s always the lawyers) find a way to
shove innocent seniors into their legal sewer.
As per Rana’s column (page 8) The Vegas Voice
spent years working to expose, uncover, and ultimately
assist in reforming the guardianship system in Nevada.
The “private guardianship industry” has collapsed as
dozens of private guardians “suddenly retired” while
others found new residences in Nevada prisons.
Unfortunately, there’s a new problem. It’s now, not private guardians,
but family members and their lawyers ripping off their relative.
Personally, I cannot comprehend the thought that relatives/siblings
would obtain separate attorneys to destroy their family (especially their
elderly parent). Hopefully you likewise have the similar belief, however,
once the lawyers (and I repeat, it’s always the lawyers) smell that money,
well…
Fortunately, there is one positive, one shining light, that appears to
be an unconditional protection to this court approved rape of assets: fill
out, complete and submit your Guardianship Nomination Form to the
Nevada Secretary of State.
All such guardianship nominations forms (at last count 5,000+)
placed in the Secretary’s “lockbox” have been honored. No one who filed
has become a victim.
I’ve heard the counter argument(s) numerous times – and while my
response sounds like a broken record, for those who disagree with me,
kindly read the following and explain where I am incorrect.
Reasons for Not Having Such Guardianship Nomination
Form:
1. I have a valid Power of Attorney OR
2. My Trust documents state my choice of a guardian OR
3. It’s a waste of time and money.
All of the above sounds reasonable, but here’s the “catch”:
1. Once the Guardianship Court gets involved, all powers of attorney
are “revoked.” End of discussion.
2. The guardianship court (and the attorneys) do not have immediate
access to your Trust and (most importantly) the court is NOT bound to
follow the terms.
The Court has the legal right to terminate, change, revise, rip-up (you
pick the term) your Trust documents. The reason for such authority is to
provide the financial resources to the guardian since it is “for your own
good.”
Our latest review has found a “relationship” between certain attorneys
and the judges that “somehow” always favor the lawyers (especially their
legal fees). While you still might win the case, it’s going to cost you.
For these “cesspool ambulance-chasers” your assets and finances are
a never emptying piggybank, even though it’s your money. The court
approved “reasonable legal fees” taken from “nest-egg
retirement funds” are jaw-dropping astonishing.
Let me be clear – the guardianship court system is
obscene and an unconditional disgrace. This so-called
legal system is “not broken”… but “fixed.”
And the best (if not only) way to avoid this happening
to you (and please don’t think it “can’t happen to you”)
is to avoid it – at all costs.
Which brings me to point number 3. For the price of
a US postage stamp (and a notary – which most banks
will do for their customers at no cost) you can rest easy.
Oh, and the two pages in filling out the form takes
about 5 minutes.
The court is still required to check with the Secretary
of State in every potential guardianship matter. So,
despite the court and lawyers’ best efforts, such guardian nomination
form is and remains “bullet-proof.”
Could I be wrong? Of course I can and my PILL (partner in love &
life) reminds me of this remarkable skill on a daily basis.
And if I am, and you followed this advice and suggestion, you lost 5
minutes of your time and the cost of a stamp.
But if I’m correct (and I’ll stake the reputation of The Vegas Voice on it)
how much time, effort and money will be spent attending court sessions
and proceedings, all while racking up “reasonable” attorney fees? And
that’s assuming you win the court battle.
What if the “fixed” guardianship court rules against you?
This continuous scandal (and don’t even get my Ladylove started
about that Guardianship Commission) will be elaborated by Rana in
future editions.
In the meantime, as Rana has done (the photo shows her signing and
filing the 1 st guardianship form with the Secretary of State) complete the
Guardianship Nomination Form. You can find and download it on our
Vegas Voice website (thevegasvoice.net) and if you have any questions,
How to Give a Cat a Pill
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
am sure you have gone through the impossible
I task of giving your pet medicine. The following
is a good example of giving a cat a pill:
1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of
your left arm. Position fingers on side of cat’s mouth and gently apply
pressure to cheeks. While holding pill in right hand, as cat opens
mouth, pop pill into mouth, allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take new pill, hold rear paws tightly, force jaws open. Push pill
to the back of mouth.
Hold mouth shut for
count of ten while
rubbing cat’s throat
vigorously.
5. Retrieve pill from
goldfish bowl and cat
from top of wardrobe.
6. Kneel on floor
with cat wedged firmly
between knees while
holding front and rear
paws. Ignore menacing
growls. Get spouse to
hold head firmly while
forcing wooden ruler
into mouth. Drop pill
down ruler into back of
throat.
7. Retrieve cat from
shredded curtains. Make note to buy new ruler and curtains. Carefully
sweep shattered figurines from hearth.
8. Wrap cat in large towel with head just visible. Put pill in drinking
straw, force mouth open and blow down straw.
9. Drink beer to take taste away of pill. Apply Band Aid to forearm
and clean your blood from carpet.
10. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto
neck leaving head showing. Force pill down throat with flick of elastic
band.
11. Consume Scotch. Use screwdriver to put cupboard doors back on
hinges. Apply whiskey compress to disinfect deep scratches to cheeks.
Throw bloody T-shirt away.
12. Tie the little @#%&* front and rear paws tightly to the leg of the
dining table. Hold head of cat vertically. Push pill to rear of throat and
pour 2 pints of water down its throat.
13. Consume remainder of Scotch. Have spouse drive you to the
Emergency Room to stitch fingers and forearm and remove pill
remnants from right eye.
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Medical Advice: Never go to a doctor whose
office plants have died.
* Patient: “Doctor, every time I drink coffee,
I get a stabbing sensation in my eye.” Doctor:
“Next time, take the spoon out of the cup.”
* Doctor: “I can’t do anything about your condition. I am afraid it’s
hereditary.” Patient: “In that case, send the bill to my parents”.
Wait, what? Part I A 90 year old Sun City man went to his doctor
and said, “Doctor, my wife who is 20 is expecting a baby.”
The doctor said, “Let me tell you a story. A man went hunting, but
instead of a gun, he picked up an umbrella by mistake. And then, when
a bear suddenly charged at him, he pointed his umbrella at the bear,
shot, and killed it on the spot.”
“Impossible”, replied the man. “Somebody else must have shot the
bear.” The doctor replied, “Exactly my point!”
Wait, what? Part II Last month I noticed that senior citizens at
a local café get free coffee. I asked “How old do you have to be to be a
senior citizen?”
The server looked at me for a few seconds, and without saying a word,
poured me a cup of coffee.
Wait, What? Part III Visiting the Social Security office for the first
time is like the first day of school when you were a child. You feel like
you don’t belong there, but there isn’t much you can do about it.
And Finally: The comfort of residing in an “age-qualified
community” is that you know that you’re too old to die young.

Oh No! Not Again - Part I
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
Six years ago, Publisher Dan and I, along with
a handful of people assisting The Vegas Voice
worked tirelessly to investigate and expose the
scandalous private guardian industry.
We were successful in changing several laws
that led to all but one private guardian leaving
Las Vegas. And some that left involuntarily are
still spending time in prison.
Of the various laws we were successful in
getting passed, one enabled out-of-state loved
ones to be named as guardians. Previously,
guardians had to be Nevada residents.
Also, private guardians had to be licensed.
In the past, they were not notwithstanding that
such guardians had full control of everything
(and every penny) the now called “protected
person” owned.
One of the most important reforms was the
ability to nominate your choice of guardian by
filing that nomination with the Nevada Secretary of State. Once done,
the court had to accept that choice should a guardian be needed. At last
count, per the Secretary of State’s office, there was in excess of 5,000
October 2023
nomination forms filed.
Also included was the “Protected Person’s Bill of Rights” that
guardians must follow, insuring the protected person, (no longer
named “wards”) would never again be treated poorly as they were in
the past.
At that point, Dan was convinced the “war
had been won.” Sadly, that is not so, we are
now working on round two!
This time however, the danger to our seniors,
and despite all the progress made, seems to be
coming not from the private guardian industry
but from the families, judges, and (of course)
the attorneys.
Let me tell about “Jenny.” Jenny has three
daughters, but was closest to her youngest,
“Karen.”
When Jenny first began having memory
issues, she asked Karen to help her with dayto-day
finances etc. This was formalized in
2019 when Jenny executed a Power of Attorney
naming Karen as her agent.
The other sisters, however, had already filed for guardianship of their
mother and it was quickly approved by the court. Can you say, “attorney
fees?”
Jenny eventually testified in the subsequent court hearing and clearly
stated that:
1. Karen had power of attorney, and
2. Her preference was for Karen to be her guardian. (She was not
aware of the Guardianship Nomination Form.)
The court eventually removed both sisters and formally granted
guardianship to Karen. Did justice prevail (even after attorney fees?)
Of course not.
As you can expect, there were “ruffled feathers” between the sisters
and complaints renewed, once again in court. The new allegations
claimed that Karen was not allowing her sisters and the rest of the
family to visit their mom as often as they wanted to.
They also charged that Karen was not keeping adequate records of
expenditures from their mother’s estate. That claim was dismissed after
a financial examination by a court ordered expert, proved that claim
false.
Legal documents also clearly showed that visits were made, or not
made per Jenny’s wishes. Although she had slight dementia, Jenny was
still able to participate fully in enjoying her life as she wanted.
Who won? How about the lawyers that were called into the fray. Can
you say, “cha-ching?”
The (reasonable) legal fees bill presented to the court from the sisters
My Bucket List Has
Sprung a Leak
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
There’s something about reaching the big
seven-zero birthday that makes a guy realize
that he is not going to do a lot of things in life that he once thought
he could.
I don’t mean to be pessimistic. There are still lots of things that I
can do. It’s just that the list of can’t do’s is catching up with the can
do’s which has forced me to undertake a down-sizing of my bucket list.
The idea of having a bucket list of things to do before one dies is
popular right now. There are several activities that I’ve thought about
doing over the years but never got around to.
And now I’m afraid it may be too late. So, I need to modify my list
a bit.
For example, I dreamed about touring Ireland and Italy. Ireland to
visit the pubs and Italy for the great pasta.
I’ve pretty much given up on that idea. Instead, I will curl up on the
couch and watch Rick Steves’ videos while drinking a pint of Guinness
and eating a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs.
Another experience I thought I’d like to have was to go for a swim
in the ocean. You know, like Burt Lancaster in From Here to Eternity.
I’m probably a little old for that. Besides, I can’t swim.
But there’s nothing to stop me from filling up the bathtub and
splashing around a bit - while wearing a life jacket, of course.
Always thought that being in a famous rock band would be fun.
There was only one thing holding me back: I can’t sing or play an
instrument.
So, I’ve modified my bucket list to include working up the nerve
to join other people who can’t sing at the local bar’s weekly karaoke
night.
As a distance runner, I fantasized about running in the Boston
Marathon. Unfortunately, I never did achieve that level of conditioning,
and it’s certainly too late now. However, I did recently pick up a Boston
Cream Pie from the day-old bakery rack at the grocery store.
Not quite the same, but it sure was good.
Spider Baby Lives On
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
Happy Halloween everybody!
Memories video
I recently did a Vegas Voice Hollywood
segment where we talked about the movie
Spider Baby. I did this movie way back in
1967. It also starred Lon Chaney Jr.
I realize that horror movies aren’t for
everyone, however, much to my surprise
the segment received well over 18,000 hits
on YouTube!
Recently, I was contacted by an up and
coming young film maker by the name
of Dustin Ferguson. He wanted to do a
remake of Spider Baby and he wanted me
to do a cameo in it.
Dustin told me that it would be executive
produced by the original writer/director Jack Hill. I was excited to hear
that the movie was deemed worthy enough to even be considered for a
re-make.
I still get fan mail from all over the world in regards to Spider Baby,
and since Jack Hill was on board with a re-make I was thrilled to be a
part of it. I was also contacted by Rob Zombie. If you’re a horror fan you
will know exactly who he is, as he is huge in this genre.
He just produced the sound track for Spider Baby and I am on
the cover, along with many photos (along with an interview by Rob
Zombie). It’s on 2 vinyl records which apparently is now the “new
thing”!
The new re-make is having its red
carpet premiere in Santa Ana, California
on Halloween, October 31 st at 7:00 pm.
It will be at the Frida theater and the
premier is open to the public.
Filming was fun and I met Ron
Chaney.(See photo) He’s Lon Chaney’s
grandson and he also had a cameo
role. It was wonderful to reminisce
with him about his grandfather as Lon
Chaney Jr. was such a dear man and was one of my favorite people to
work with.
Sadly, only Mary Mitchel (who played Ann the secretary in the
original) and I are the only two actors still alive from the original
movie. Mary, who is now 83 is retired, so that leaves me as the only
original cast member.
I was honored and thrilled to be a part of the re-make. All these years
later and Spider Baby still lives on! I guess you just never know what
the future can bring!
Until next time, remember, Being kind is more important than
being right.
How it All Started
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
My dreams were about to come true…the
moment I had waited for all my life! But
then disaster happened, and it all fell apart in
that single moment with the “hiccup heard
‘round the world.”
I was a fairly quiet and thoughtful kid growing up. I spent most of
my time with adults and read a lot of books.
There was only one kid my age in the neighborhood, Hopie Schrader,
so I kept busy by reading when she couldn’t come out to play. By the
time I reached high school, I had read all 23 volumes of the Funk &
Wagnalls encyclopedia and was ready to let my tiny school know who
I really was.
12
October 2023
I was going to be a star!
As the first freshman in my school to ever be accepted into the elite
“Swing Choir,” I thought I was on my way to guys patting me on the
back and girls lining up to give me a hug. Or maybe even a kiss!
All I had to do was sing. The butterfly would emerge from the cocoon,
and I’d soon rival the popularity of the hunky quarterbacks on our
varsity team.
On that fated day, the entire school was in the gymnasium ready for a
concert they would never forget. I was tasked with singing the first song
and I practiced the words, picked out my best outfit, and was ready to
be that star.
The music rang out, the band was swinging, and I opened my
mouth and…hiccupped into the microphone. Then I burped - into
the microphone.
All the plans, all the dreams, all the girls’ love and admiration went
up in a deafening round of laughter. Dreams shattered in a single
moment. I thought I may never perform again.
But if I had have accepted that, I’d have never made it to Vegas and
be here with all of you, many years later.
I’m ready, once again, to step out into the unknown with you, our
readers, and am grateful to be in the Vegas Voice family. Let’s see what
we can do together!
Dyn-O-Mite Headed to Tropicana
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
With the anticipation of the Oakland
Athletics relocation to Las Vegas, there’s
been speculation over
the Tropicana Casino’s future, site of the
baseball team’s upcoming stadium.
Harry Basil, partner and general manager
of Laugh Factory, the Trop’s comedy mecca,
assured those concerned that the expected
Dyn-O-Mite delivery is in the person of
Jimmie Walker, familiar to mid-70’s TV
audiences as “JJ” on Norman Lear’s Good
Times. “Dyn-O-Mite” became a catch
phrase of the era after Walker popularized
it while portraying the teenage son of James
and Florida Evans, “JJ”, residents of an
inner-city Chicago high rise.
Basil describes Walker’s approach to
comedy as “squeaky clean,” adding that his brand of humor was
cultivated in the era of Gabe Kaplan, Robin Williams and David
Letterman, disclosing that Walker was a writer on Letterman’s early
shows.
Last month, an audience of Baby Boomers filled Ahern Live, the
new comedy club at the Ahern Boutique Hotel for the venue’s 2-night
Grand Opening. Walker’s approach was reminiscent of the comedy era
Linda Lou & Jimmie Walker
of Seinfeld, Howie Mandel, Louis Anderson, Steve Landesberg (Dietrich
on Barney Miller) and David Brenner.
Laugh Factory and Ahern Live represent the growth of comedy clubs
in Las Vegas…Laugh Factory being among
the earliest and Ahern Live the most recent.
From those early days to the current day,
comedy often targeted a contemporary
audience with material that frequently was
edgy, divisive, controversial and blue.
Veteran comedian/comedy writer Cliff
Lawrence, who has collaborated with
Walker for over ten years, takes issue with
that approach. “If you work clean, you’ll
never be unemployed. I learned that from
Vic Damone,” he said. Both Landesberg
and Brenner were influential to Walker’s
approach to comedy, Lawrence added.
High energy comic/magician Lorenzo
Clark hosts the Ahern’s weekly rotation of
comedians at 7:00 pm every Friday and Saturday (free admission/
parking, 2 drink minimum). Fitting in perfectly between the Clark and
Walker was Henderson housewife/comedian Linda Lou who shared the
charm and humor of living in a 55+ active adult community.
Walker, a Las Vegas resident, will join the lineup at Tropicana’s Laugh
Factory for his annual Thanksgiving engagement November 20-26.
Primary care for adults
60+ that’s a natural fit.
Library Voices
By: Liz Breier / This & That
Recently, I was with a few friends in a public
place. We
were playing
cards at a venue
that had several other groups enjoying
various senior pastime experiences.
One group was quite loud and
even after they finished their games,
decided that standing directly over
our shoulders and continuing their
conversations with a few others was a
good idea. It was quite disturbing and
in my opinion, rude.
In a public place, I believe folks
should speak in what I refer to as
“library voices.” When not in your
own home there should be the
consideration of privacy.
Do you really want everyone else to know your business? If you want
to share your life with strangers around you, then you are succeeding.
Coincidentally the next evening, I was in a restaurant with my
spouse. A table across the restaurant also seemed to think they were at
their own kitchen table.
Memory Lane
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
got lost today,
I in a stroll
down Memory
Lane! Poodle skirts and crinolines,
nylon stockings with a seam up the
back…so sexy, but hard to keep
straight!
Remember hats and gloves? No
Sunday was complete without them.
We all had a Jacqueline Kennedy
pillbox hat and at least one A-line dress.
School days wouldn’t have been the same without white bucks,
saddle shoes and penny loafers. Who remembers sock hops in the
school gymnasium where they played 78 and 45 RPM records?
Wigs were all the fashion in the sixties, and miniskirts and boots
were in. I remember when it was a compliment if you got a wolf whistle
when you passed a construction site. None of us felt violated! We were
disappointed if no one noticed us.
And then there was the Playboy Club! It wasn’t easy to be chosen as a
Playboy bunny! Women’s lib came along and told us it was demeaning
to wear a costume with a bunny tail and bunny ears, so that was that!
How many of you still have your Playboy Key or card? They fetch more
14
October 2023
We felt like we were part of their conversation. We heard every name
and every detail of their shared experiences.
The owner of the restaurant then
decided to strike up a conversation
with the table immediately adjacent to
ours. Again, we were forced to listen to
every detail of someone’s divorce, new
girlfriend, etc.
The conversations got so loud we did
not even bother to try to engage in our
own tete-a-tete since we would have
had to yell at each other to be heard.
Why are people yelling in public
places? Why are they speaking as if in
the privacy of their own homes? Why
are folks not more considerate of those
around them?
While dining or patronizing a public
place, we can’t expect total silence, but
I do not believe it is wrong to expect a modicum of decorum. Library
voices – please!
By the time I was thirty, I had a collection of swizzle sticks from
various nightclubs around town. We began to smoke because we
wanted to look sophisticated…yeah,
no one told us how dangerous it was!
Once upon a time ordinary
memories were made, now we
examine them as treasures.
They say you can’t go home again.
With that I disagree.
For one can always go back home,
At least in memory.
It brings back golden sunshine. Days, carefree and bold.
Your world was full of lace. Toy soldiers, worn now old.
The puppy dog you loved so well! Or maybe it was a kitten.
Of measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Even the occasional lickin’.
Chicken soup and animal crackers, Sunday dinners with Jello!
Car trips, picnics, and movies…Make you really mellow.
Most memories are happy, Some touched by sorrow.
Remember that today’s, Are the memories of tomorrow.
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
At times called the “plastic princess”, the Mattel
doll that most little girls grew up with is now a
hit movie. Director Greta Gerwig’s film was No.1
at the box office for weeks
Some say “Barbie” is poised to become 2023’s top film. It is now the
biggest movie to be directed by a woman.
This award-winning cast includes; Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan
Gosling as Ken, plus America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Rhea Perlman,
Micheal Cena, and Kate McKinnon.
“Barbie” is a
visually dazzling
comedy whose
meta humor
is smartly
complemented
by subversive
storytelling.
To live in
Barbie Land,
confectionary
pink, is to be a
perfect being in a
perfect place.
Unless you
have a full
existential crisis.
Or you’re Ken.
Ryan Gosling
goes all out,
especially in his
rendition of “I’m
Just Ken “, as he
acknowledges
pressures men face. In one scene, 44 Kens wearing black outfits and
Barbie-pink socks, absurdly strike each other with aggressive dance
moves.
This film is funny, bright, and uplifting! It has a lot to say about the
modern world in terms of feminism and gender equality.
It’s a wicked satire for everything the Barbie franchise stands for. It’s
not mean spirited, in fact, it’s a celebration, a balancing act for the
ages.
My favorite scene shows Barbie sitting down on a bench where a
91 year old woman is sitting reading a newspaper. Barbie says to her,
“You’re beautiful !” And the woman replies with a smile, “I know it.”
The movie is clever and I enjoyed going back in time as both of my
daughters had played with these dolls, I’m giving this film a 10 and
suggest you go see it for yourself.
Living in the Widowhood
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
I
’m approaching 10 years as a widow. At times,
it’s been tough and challenging, sad and lonely,
and scary and intimidating, but it’s also been
filled with lessons learned, mindset resets, and lots
of reminders calling for self-love, self-care, and lots of self-acceptance.
The Widowhood was my home. It wasn’t a bad place to live, until it
became my comfort zone. It took a few years before I realized it’s not
the place I wanted to live.
Grief lasts as long as love lasts, and love lasts forever. I had to figure
out how to grieve, accept, and move forward.
I had to learn to support myself in my grief, as I continued to accept
and adjust to my new normal. I had to shift my mindset.
As you probably know, life in the Widowhood comes complete with
all the reasons and excuses to stop living and stop enjoying life. You
may even begin to exist on auto pilot.
However, it also comes with plenty of reasons to reset and re-self.
You’ll have to adapt to the YOU that supports your new independence.
You’ll never be okay, but you must learn to support yourself and adjust.
A mindset reset is in order. Leaving the often-hopeless mindset of
widowhood involves a few shifts and lots of self-awareness.
It involves self-discovery and self-rediscovery. Some parts of life will
need reimagining. You’ll need to take lots of deep breaths; then, you’ll
be able to set your soul free.
It’s time to be YOU, guilt-free, with a healthy hold on the past and a
future vision filled with self-care and self-awareness. It’s time to create
and move into an updated, renovated
Widowhood tailored to who and where you want to be now. This is
positive aging!
The Little Patch That Could
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
Growing your own vegetables is such an
amazing experience.
Years ago, when I lived in California, I turned
a 20 x 30 patch of ground into a garden and grew everything from
corn to zucchini. From July through October, that patch never stopped
producing. It was like the little engine that could.
The bad part of a good garden is that it never stops giving. I love
corn but how many ears can you eat? And how much can you pass off
to friends!
Then there are tomatoes! Oh, those gorgeous tomatoes. I froze them
whole for delicious tomato sauces all year long. Some say they can’t be
frozen - they can!
Then came the zucchini, the most prolific of growers. If you want
to ruin friendships,
show up at a
friend’s door with a
bag of zucchini.
The first time
you are gladly
welcomed, the
second time the
smile is thinner
and the third time
no one answers
the bell. (As an
incentive, I even
tried giving out
zucchini recipes
ranging from bread
to quiche. It didn’t
work.)
I was desperate to
give the produce a home and prayed to the Zucchini Gods that they
would wither away, but no; still they came. A word to the wise - pass on
the zucchini!
But, back to corn. It’s a favorite and can take the place of potato salad
or coleslaw, so try it for something new.
Corn Salad: Defrost 16 oz. bag of fire roasted corn. (I use Trader
Joe’s for the best flavor). Melt 2 tbs. butter in large skillet over high
heat. Add 1 minced garlic clove and stir for 1 minute. Add corn and
cook for 3-4 minutes, seasoning with ½ tsp. each of kosher salt and
ground black pepper.
In bowl mix ¼ cup crème fraiche, ½ tsp. ancho chili powder, ½ red or
sweet onion diced, juice of one lime, 2 stems finely sliced green onion,
and 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley or cilantro.
Pour over corn, toss well and top with ¼ cup crumbled cotija cheese.
Taste and add more cheese, seasoning or lime juice as needed.
Food is Medicine
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Hey kids, you’ve heard the adage “you are what
you eat”? This is also true for the food we eat
as your food is only
as good as what it ate - whether it’s fruit
and veggies or beef, chicken, or fish. What
were they fed?
The bottom line? Food is medicine!
The notion that food can be a potent
medicine dates back centuries, with
ancient cultures recognizing the healing
properties of certain foods. In recent
times, scientific research has provided
a deeper understanding of how specific
nutrients and compounds in food can
influence our bodies at the molecular level.
Take inflammation, for instance – a root cause of numerous chronic
diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Certain foods like
berries, fatty fish, and leafy greens are rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory
compounds that can help mitigate this bodily response.
By emphasizing fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and sprouted
grains while replacing table salt with Celtic Sea Salt and eliminating
processed foods, this diet has shown remarkable efficacy in lowering
blood pressure levels without the need for medication.
Complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, such as quinoa
and sweet potatoes, can help stabilize blood sugar levels. Cinnamon, a
common spice, has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity.
These dietary adjustments underscore
how food choices can significantly impact
the management of chronic illnesses.
It’s not just about combating ailments
– food can also optimize mental wellbeing.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty
fish like salmon have been linked to
reduced risk of depression and anxiety.
In a world where chronic diseases are
on the rise and health care costs continue
to escalate, realizing that food can be a
powerful form of preventive and supportive medicine is paramount. So,
drop the wheat and dairy, eat pasture raised beef, chicken, and eggs. Eat
wild caught fish like Pacific Salmon.
Exxcite The Show Turns Up The Temperature
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Exxcite The Show in the Duomo at the
Rio Las Vegas is suggestive, seductive, sexy,
sensual, succulent, and simply superior. This
is Las Vegas - classically trained attractive showgirls with glitz and
glamour showing the audience
their beautiful fronts – and their
other assets.
These women know how
to move and grove for your
enjoyment. Their tatas are
covered (barely) and the
audience does get to enjoy their
gyrations from various angles.
Vocalist Gabie Lopez certainly
can count on a bright future in
Sin City. She has the wow factor as she belts out the high notes of rock
and roll songs that we’ve enjoyed through the years.
Award-winning producer, director, choreographer Jennifer Romas is
a seasoned pro who knows how to put it all together. Although Jen does
not perform in this production, her magic touch is evident.
She wants the audience members to feel the genuine Las Vegas vibe.
And they do.
Kudos to the costume designer for manifesting exceptional creativity
while keeping it on the pleasingly skimpy side. The music is rock and
roll through the years.
The outstanding choreography keeps the show moving on its high
energy path. And then what would modern life be without the pink
Barbie scene?
It’s not all song and dance. The props add another enjoyable
element. The bathtub scene will satisfy those who are looking for a bit
of eroticism.
And wait til you see the
suspended hula hoop numbers.
The stripper pole is called into
play a few times..... And the
action on the throne.... And the
mock motorcycle..... And the
giant lips. Yum.
Take note that these luscious
ladies journey into the audience
and bring some lucky folks on stage for a little extra ooo la la. Want
to see a real classic and classy adult Las Vegas production? Exxcite The
Show at the Rio is it. 10:00 pm show on Saturday – Monday.
Loneliness
By: Heather Latimer / Heather’s Self-Help Tips
Loneliness is that sense of abandonment that
often results from grief over the death of a
loved one.
It’s due to the loss of touch, lack of closeness, and inability to interact
with the living being that’s impossible to replace (person/dog). One
can only be lonely living with an unresponsive person or failing to be
accepted in a group .
A government funded Ministry of Loneliness exists in England to
cope with its epidemic of loneliness. Japan and several other countries
have followed suit.
Their programs stress the importance of keeping the brain active
and free from the gloomy disquieting mixture of thoughts that, when
combined with solitude, destroy one’s peace of mind.
To combat such dreariness, you need to stop listening to those
pessimistic individuals who dwell on nothing but negatives. Then find
just one thing that is challenging - where you must develop strategy or
make choices amongst several options.
To accomplish this, either renew an interest in a former hobby or
find a new one. Preferably one that involves you in extended activity or
a beneficial outcome.
It could be selling antiques in your home, and maybe attending
auctions and acquiring other pieces to show off or sell. Or playing
a game that requires concentration - like chess. Or even learning a
second language.
As you become absorbed in your fresh venture it will keep your mind
occupied for a longer time and leave less chance for toxic thoughts to
enter.
Whistleblowers Tell
Congress About UFOs
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
David Grusch, who served as an Air Force and
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
intelligence officer appeared before a Congressional investigation
alongside two former fighter pilots with firsthand “Unidentified Aerial
Phenomena” (UAP) experiences. They were David Fravor, who spotted
a UAP, during a flight over the California coast and Ryan Graves, a navy
pilot who spoke of UAPs during training missions.
“UAP encounters are not rare or isolated,” claimed the three
whistleblowers that testified at the House Oversight Committee’s
national security subcommittee in July.
Although they couldn’t answer some of the questions due to classified
programs, all three witnesses concurred that current reporting systems
are inadequate to
investigate UAP
encounters. Yet, they
were all hopeful that
their testimonies
would lead to more
transparency and
remove the stigma
for pilots and officials
who report these incidents.
Grusch who served on two Pentagon Task forces investigating UAPs
until earlier this year, told the committee misappropriated funds were
used to block these operations from congressional oversight. Among
other information, he also told them of his direct knowledge of crashed
UAPs with deceased “non-humans” called “biologics”, that were
recovered and where they’re kept.
Navy pilot Fravor spoke of how he and another pilot spotted “the
smooth, seamless oval-shaped object” hovering over the water. He
described how it rapidly climbed about 12,000 feet, accelerated and
instantly disappeared.
Graves was an F-18 Navy pilot in Virginia Beach when his squadron
began detecting unknown objects. He described some incidents to
the Committee and stated that no acknowledgement of any incidents
reported ever came.
He later started “Americans for Safe Aerospace”, an organization to
support military and commercial aviators who witnessed and reported
objects performing unexplainable maneuvers.
Congress was not happy to hear these allegations. Though unsure
of how they will proceed with investigating the charges, they intend to
uncover the cover-up, to have a committee for UAP investigations, and
they want “Transparency Now!”
In September, the Pentagon launched a new website AARO.com (All-
Domain Anomaly Resolution Office) to provide declassified UFOs info,
reports, transcripts, etc. to the public.
Learning to be a Good Driver
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Although The Vegas Voice caters to seniors,
this column isn’t about teaching you to drive,
but your grandkids.
For those who have grandchildren who are
just getting behind the wheel, you know
it matters that they understand how to
handle a car, as well as what to do when the
unexpected happens.
One of the best driving instruction
programs is called B.R.A.K.E.S., which stands
for Be Responsible and Keep Everyone
Safe. The school was started in 2008 by
NHRA drag-racing star Doug Herbert, who
lost his two young sons in a tragic car crash.
B.R.A.K.E.S. is a non-profit organization that teaches young adults
how to be better drivers. It’s open to those ages 15-19 who have a valid
permit or driver’s license, a minimum of 30 hours driving experience,
and at least one parent or legal guardian who can attend the entire
session.
The program travels around the country, bringing an array of skills
to new drivers. B.R.A.K.E.S. is coming to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway
for the first time for one weekend only, October 7-8.
If you have a grandchild who is relatively green behind the wheel,
tell their parents to visit the website and sign up. The classes are three
hours long and fill up fast. Three sessions are available for Saturday
and two sessions on Sunday.
I’ve attended the school and have been
promoting B.R.A.K.E.S since it opened.
The team of professional drivers are both
amazing racers and talented coaches.
They instruct on everything from crash
avoidance to car control and skid recovery
to how to react in a wheel drop-off situation.
They also demonstrate how ABS feels during
a panic stop, as well as the dangers of driving
distracted. Instruction happens in vehicles
generously supplied and sponsored by Kia.
The cost of the program is free, but it
does require a $99 credit card deposit to hold the reservation. After
the class, you can request a refund or donate the money to help them
continue this valuable program. For more information or to register,
visit putonthebrakes.com.
A Fiery Turning Point
By: Jane Dow / Mutterings & Musings
“
Wake up, Janie. The chic-a-bob’s on fire.”
My 8 year old ears heard these words my
mother spoke, but I didn’t see any flames or smell
any smoke. My home couldn’t be burning up!
In 1956 my family and I lived in a sub-basement apartment under
a three story commercial building my father had designed. The top
floor had 17 hotel rooms, the ground level was a bar and restaurant.
A basement was under that, and we lived in a two bedroom apartment
next to the basement.
My father “Chic” was a larger-than-life businessman, his brother
“Bob” was a farmer. Together they built the Chic-a-Bob.
Life for a southwestern Pennsylvania eight year old and her five year
old sister Susie was the American dream from morning till night. We
walked to school, played outside till dark, and learned to be comfortable
around a bunch of drunks.
The dream came to an end that hot August night in 1956. The
clothing and toys Susie and I had madly thrown into pillow cases were
forgotten as we heard Mommy’s voice screaming to “come out of the
bedroom! You need to get out!!”
I still didn’t hear or smell anything. Why was mommy so scared? Our
neighbor, Mr. Claycomb, had arrived to drive us to a motel up the road.
Mommy stayed.
As we rode up the driveway next to the Chic-a-Bob, I looked back
through the rear window. I saw the giant orange flames licking out of
the third floor windows.
Shadows of firemen were holding powerful hoses, trying futilely to
douse the flames. It was a last memory of my childhood home.
August 29, 1956 was a turning point in my life. A few pieces of
furniture and some family photos were saved, but the only thing my
daddy and I could find the next day in the ashes were a few melted bar
glasses and eight blackened pennies. So much gone.
But true to form, six months later, my daddy built a 17 unit motel on
the very site of the Chic-a-Bob and named it the Janey Lynn. I’m Janey.
My sister is Susan Lynn.
Jane taught high school English and theatre for 30 years. She
now spends her time being a Toastmaster, enjoying the endless
entertainment options in our town, attending Pilates classes and
spoiling her rescue, Mandy.
Exploring Your Roots: A
Great Hobby for Seniors
By: Craig Smith / Guest Column
Family history and genealogy are more than
just hobbies; they’re journeys of discovery that can
unlock the secrets of your past, connect you with your ancestors, and
provide a deeper understanding of your identity.
Whether you’re just starting your research or you’re a seasoned
genealogist, the world of family history offers endless opportunities to
explore, learn, and connect with your heritage.
Preserving Your Heritage: Family history is like a tapestry of stories,
and each thread represents an ancestor’s life. Preserving this heritage
ensures that the unique experiences and traditions of your family are
passed down to future generations.
Passing on family stories to your children and grandchildren is
important as well as enjoyable.
Getting
Started with
Genealogy:
Start by
collecting
information
from living
relatives.
Record names,
dates of birth,
marriages, and
any family stories or traditions they remember. This information can
serve as a foundation for your research.
Utilize Online Resources: The internet is a treasure trove of
genealogical resources. Websites like Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org
(free), and MyHeritage.com offer access to extensive databases, records,
and tools to aid your research.
DNA Testing: DNA testing services like 23andMe and AncestryDNA
can reveal genetic connections to distant relatives and help you expand
your family tree.
Join Genealogy Societies: Connect with other genealogists by
joining local or online genealogy societies. These groups offer support,
knowledge, and access to resources you might not find elsewhere.
There are four genealogical societies right here in the Las Vegas valley:
1. Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society (CCNGS)
2. Nevada African American Genealogy Society (NAAGS)
3. Centennial Las Vegas Genealogy Society (CLVGS)
4. Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada (JGSSN)
Members of these organizations have years of family research
experience. They enjoy helping people get started with their family history
research and assisting with organizing family records.
Craig Smith is the President of the Clark County Nevada
Genealogical Society. The Society meets on the third Saturday of
each month at the Paseo Verde Library in Henderson. Craig can
be contacted at president@ccngs.org

A Proud Vietnam Vet
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Charlie Sharps served as a platoon leader in
Vietnam. He subsequently earned his Master’s
in Elementary Education and a PhD in
educational policy. Teaching became his forte.
VET2VET: Charlie, after Vietnam I was a Drill Sergeant
and served with several “Shake ‘n Bake” sergeants. They were
excellent NCOs. You were selected, trained, and served in this
capacity as well. Tell us about that?
Charlie Sharps: As a Shake ’n Bake sergeant, there were
hard feelings from some old-timers who had spent a lifetime
earning similar rank. The program was started because
‘Nam was taking its toll, and replacements were needed. “Instant
NCOs” became the answer.
We all trained hard and learned to successfully lead men in combat.
In ‘Nam our tenuous Shake ‘n Bake status meant little because we
proved to be experts at reading maps, compasses, calling in artillery,
adjusting mortars, and operating as skilled leaders.
VV: Veterans have re-adjusted to civilian life in many ways. Why did
you choose education as your way?
CS: Once out of the Army, I had difficulty with crowds, loud noises
(such as fireworks) and socializing in a normal way. Adjusting to
civilian life was tough.
When I returned, I found studying a comfort, and it put me at ease.
I’ve continued a lifetime relationship with education as both a school
teacher and administrator.
VV: How did leadership experience in the Army prepare you
for your civilian career?
CS: Every job I’ve ever held I’ve worked to be the boss.
Whenever I have found myself in a group situation where
leadership was expected, I just did it and that was even before
my military service.
However, running a platoon of soldiers through a war zone
probably re-enforced my leadership predisposition. Men’s’
lives were in my hands, and they were willing to put them
there. My civilian career demonstrated that leadership willingness.
Classroom teacher - a leader. School superintendent - a leader.
VV: What encouragement do you have for the senior veterans?
CS: Vietnam will never be over for us; a lifetime of memories. For
veterans reading this, remember, we are the survivors. We can hold our
heads high and shout to the world, “I’m a ‘Nam Vet and damn proud
of it.”
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.
What was I thinking? I know better than to not
do a test spot when using anything on my hair.
Those warnings are
there for a reason but…
I recently saw a hair gloss for brunettes
advertised online, no peroxide, no ammonia. Of
course, I looked it up and it had good reviews.
A non-permanent hair gloss conditioner. What
could possibly go wrong? The short answer - lots!
I washed my hair and applied the gloss. It
smelled good and was a nice brown. I left it on
longer than I should have because I got busy and
didn’t watch the time. Major mistake.
When I rinsed my hair, it was red! Not like
Orphan Annie red - more like ugly orange-red auburn. It was not a pretty
color, especially with my skin tone.
All of the gray strands that had previously been colored brown, glistened
like bright red tinsel!
I was sure washing it would help, but it didn’t! The more I washed, the
more the old brown color washed out but not the red.
It was just an odd color and in the sun, it was a mess. My son, seeing it
the first time said, “Did you dye your hair red”? I explained, clearly, I did,
just not on purpose.
Fall Fashions in Las Vegas
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
September through December are my favorite
months of the year. The weather starts to
change and our
oppressive Summer
months start to fall behind us.
Most people start to look forward to
breaking out their sweaters to accommodate
those cooler evenings. Living in Las Vegas
is a little different and most women don’t
focus on their jeans, sweaters and boots
until the last bit of Summer sun disappears.
For a fashion fanatic like myself the
stores start displaying new fall fashion
colors in August, which seems ironic since
we don’t really start to feel the changes until mid-October. That said,
perusing through the aisles I noticed all the beautiful styles/colors that
have arrived in the stores.
At the MAGIC (clothing and accessories) show in August the
following colors made an appearance: Fiery Red, Clay, Viva Magenta,
Cream & Bone, Burgundy and my favorite Chocolate Brown. These
colors have popped up in jeans, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, jackets and
even handbags.
For clothing pairings Cream & Bone works great with any of the
color choices listed above. Some women may not want to go bold;
however, Fiery Red looks amazing when paired with Chocolate Brown.
Viva Magenta (Pantone’s color of the
year) looks amazing with Navy and Black.
With all the options available this Fall,
and even if all the colors don’t appeal
to everyone, you can still enjoy the 2023
choices through a less risky approach via a
hat or a coat. Even Burgundy and Chocolate
Brown are making their way into men’s Fall
fashion choices.
Saying goodbye to Summer is always
difficult; however, the Fall season not only
brings weather changes, but a wonderful
sense of comfort and warmth. Maintaining a positive outlook on life
and realizing that even the simplest of things can offer a feeling of joy.
Happy Fall y’all and enjoy the changes of the season.
I googled everything to see how to fix this. I tried clarifying shampoos
and dozens of washings. I tried coloring it with temporary dark ash brown
- all to no avail.
The dark brown was 3 shades darker than my
normal color, so now I have what I would call
black cherry hair. The gray hair, now bright red,
still glistens through like it’s trying to show off.
I decided to wait it out. Certainly, with all this
washing, the red would fade. It’s been 3 weeks, it
hasn’t.
I have one last thing to try, then I’m headed to
a salon, which I should have done 3 weeks ago.
I’m going to try Matrix green shampoo.
While it’s for dark brown hair, and my natural
color is medium brown with lighter highlights,
what do I have to lose at this point?
Good thing fall is coming. Maybe people will think it’s intentional. After
all, who doesn’t like the pumpkin look?
The moral of this story - Do a test sample, watch the clock, and if you
mess it up, get help.
Basically, do the exact opposite of everything I did.
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
After teaching a “Fall Prevention/Balance”
course for several years, I became a fallen
victim myself. It happened last month.
I was ushering a “Beetlejuice”
performance at The Smith
Center. One of our jobs is to
“sweep” the area for any “Lost
and Found” items. I did find a
few items and was carrying one
of our booster seat cushions,
which are available to the guests.
In the midst of placing the lost
and found items on top of the
cushion so I could carry them
all, my foot caught the end of a
rear row chair. I felt myself falling, and quickly threw the items on the
floor while placing the cushion in front of my face.
Fortunately, I fell into the cushion, diverting a disastrous injury.
I laid there for a few seconds assessing the situation. My co-worker
immediately called our supervisor and and I received immediate care.
I was sent to an urgent care facility. I stayed few hours, received
observation and then sent home with a prescription and hot compresses.
When the Waters Get Thick
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
You have probably known someone that looks
much younger (or older) than their actual
age. Aging is not a
process that happens for everyone the same
way over time.
In other words, time does not make you
older. It is the level of degradation of both
structure and function of your body over
time that determines how old or young you
look and feel.
Many factors contribute to this process.
Nutrition, daily exercise, stress, and whether
and how much you smoke and drink are
common factors that most people know
affect health and aging.
There are others, however, of which you
might not be aware.
The number one killer of human beings is cardiovascular disease.
The problem here is that most people do not understand the process by
which the cardiovascular system goes from a state of health to one of
disease and eventually death.
A heart attack, heart failure and other cardiovascular problems do
not just suddenly happen. They develop over time. High blood pressure,
Falling Into Fall - No Pun Intended!
October 2023
increased cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking and other factors
change the blood’s viscosity over time.
In other words, they make the blood thicker so nutrients do not reach
the cells as easily and wastes are not as efficiently removed. This leads
to degradation of the cells, the tissues, the
organs and eventually the whole person.
This degradation is what causes a person to
age, not time.
This process is not limited to the fluids in
the circulatory system. Fluids surround and
interpenetrate every cell and tissue.
Here the fluids may also become thick.
They can go from a free flowing water like
consistency to a thicker gel. Once again this
affects how nutrients come in and wastes are
expelled.
As previously stated, a healthy diet, daily
exercise, limiting smoking and drinking can help with this process.
Massage and acupuncture can also help transition the fluids back to a
healthy state in an effort to help the body recover.
My reason for posting this incident is to show what can happen, no
matter how careful we are in life. As I instruct my Fall Prevention/
Balance student, if you feel yourself falling, bring up your arm to
protect your face.
If I did not have the cushion
to fall into, I would have
instinctively placed my arm in
front of my face. Luckily, the
cushion saved me from a fate
which would have developed into
a different story.
When I told the emergency
room doctor what I did to protect
my face, she said I really reacted
quickly and knew what to do.
I’m thankful for just a bruise on
my leg which will heal in a few weeks.
what you don’t have.
Money vs. Results
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Politicians love to spend money – your money!
There is an old saying that capsulate all
politicians budgeting mantras: “ Throw more
and more money at a problem and sooner or
later it’s bound to work!” If solutions to our problems relied only on
the amount of money we spend, then we would all be living in a state
of nirvana.
Problem is that line of thinking has and always will fail! Cases in
point: K-12 education, food insecurity and homelessness.
Earlier this year, the State Legislature allocated a whopping $1 billion
more to their education budget. The intent was to mitigate a growing
student truancy rate (currently at 30% and rising) and improve English
language, reading and basic mathematic skills.
Result? No improvement and getting worse!
Next, food insecurity, especially among the very young, continues
to defy a solution as this problem also is escalating. Local governing
bodies and non-profits have been and continue to dispense enormous
amounts of money (upwards of $100 million) and still, kids and
families are not getting the daily nourishment they all need.
Finally, homelessness is rapidly expanding throughout the state. In
spite of efforts by the state, counties and local cities, more and more are
finding their only sanctuary is living on the streets.
This begs the question: WHY? The answer: no accountability!
There is no question that nothing can be accomplished to resolve
problems without money. But, with no system of accountability
built in, it doesn’t take a genius to determine that failure is the
inevitable common denominator.
How does accountability work? One way: disperse funds in increments
based on milestones or results achieved. If there is no improvement
(or the problem worsens) no additional funds will be allocated until
positive trends are achieved.
Overly simplistic? Sometimes, uncomplicated actions may be the
most workable. One thing I know for an absolute certainty is the manner
in which our tax dollars are currently being spent is an abomination!
An alternative line of thinking, as simple as it may appear, just might
work.
Congress Eyes Reform to
Medicare Payments
By: Paul Klein / Guest Column
Have you noticed higher prices in your medical
bills? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of
seniors across America are being affected by steep price increases for
everything from run-of-the-mill appointments to unplanned medical
treatments.
This problem will
be top of mind for our
lawmakers in Washington
from now through the
end of the year.
Congress is considering
a few options to
address the issue, such
as the Facilitating
Accountability in
Reimbursements Act
(FAIR) in the House and
the Site-based Invoicing and Transparency Enhancement Act (SITE)
in the Senate. Both would take on the increased medical costs Nevadan
seniors suffer due to increased consolidation in the health care industry.
More medical facilities are falling victim to Medicare’s unfair billing
system that allows hospitals to charge more for health care services at
newly acquired facilities. Nothing about the service itself changes, but
the new corporate hospital owners are allowed to charge more because
the facility’s ownership has changed.
Any increase in medical bills, often with no warning, can be
financially devastating for seniors who live on fixed incomes. Major
changes in their monthly expenses can be devastating.
The SITE Act can fix this issue by requiring a more fair and
transparent billing process – and not allowing service charges to be
based on the location or ownership of a facility, but solely based on the
service itself.
There is bipartisan support for fair hospital billing measures, an
element to this legislation that reinforces the severity and prevalence
of the issue it intends to fix. “Our health care system is broken, and
one problem we can fix right now is services at off-campus outpatient
facilities being billed to Medicare at higher hospital rates,” stated
Senator Braun (R-IN), a co-sponsor of the SITE Act when the bill was
introduced.
The Senate is now back at work after its summer recess. Nevada
Senator Cortez Masto is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, to
which the SITE Act has been referred.
It’s time for lawmakers to address the outdated Medicare billing
structure, low reimbursement rates, and workforce shortages to ensure
that patients have access to trusted doctors and affordable care.
in Nevada.
A Very Busy Month
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
October is a busy month for “desert gardeners.”
It’s the best time of the year to add new
additions to your garden since milder daylight
temperatures and cooler evenings will encourage better rooting and
less plant stress.
In addition, the moderate temperatures will allow us more time to
work around our gardens without subjecting ourselves to heat or sun
stroke!
In October, there are five tasks that we should address: Pruning,
Adjusting Irrigation, Fertilizing, Mulching, & Planting.
This is the month to prune and shape palm trees before colder
temperatures arrive. This will allow new and delicate fronds the
necessary time to acclimate and become more tolerant to future frost.
Roses, and other flowering plants and bushes can be selectively
pruned (removing dead branches and spent flowers). Postpone
extensive pruning, however, until early December when these plants
become dormant.
By doing this selective pruning, you will stimulate additional fall
flowering. You can also prune unwanted “suckers” from trees and
bushes.
Remember that deciduous trees should be “heavily” pruned only
after the leaves have fallen off. In addition, you can “cleanup”
dead and damaged branches on non-deciduous now but wait until
December (when dormant) before doing extensive pruning.
Adhere to the Water Authority Fall Schedule as well as reducing how
long you actually water! Check emitters for damage and your system
for leaks to replace or repair.
October is the last month this year to fertilize plants. This will help
replenish nutrients and strengthen roots.
If needed, apply sulfur to the soil to reduce pH levels. This will
improve root absorption of needed nutrients. Add chelated iron to the
soil if plants have yellowing leaves (chlorosis).
Where needed, add rock and/or organic mulch to your landscaping.
Organic mulch will keep root systems moist and warm as colder
temperatures arrive. Replace rock mulch that may have washed away
to prevent further soil erosion.
Gardening centers will have their new deliveries of plants, bushes
and trees. Take time to replace any plants that have been lost during
our extremely hot summer or to improve and upgrade your existing
landscaping. Except for palm trees, anything can be planted now.
No Rest for the Weary
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
There is just no rest for the weary. And I really
did need a vacation from my recent vacation
in Europe on the very port intensive UK/Ireland/
France cruise.
Ten ports in twelve days can keep one very busy. Loved every minute of
it but a much more sedate cruise itinerary is what I need next.
While our next few Vegas Voyager trips are not as “busy” as my last
cruise, I (we) will be busy getting our next trips ready to go.
And our next Vegas Voyager Bus to the Boat cruises are a bit more
relaxed. Relaxed but very well received!
Our January 6 – 13, seven night Mexican Riviera cruise on the
Discovery Princess is just about sold out. We have close to 150 “Voyagers”
(three bus full) participating.
As usual, I have the great pleasure of hosting our Vegas Voyagers.
Contact Sharon or yours truly if interested to see if there is any last
minute availability.
Our March 9 -16 Coastal California cruise (also on the Discovery
Princess) featuring the FOLK LEGACY TRIO is also proving extremely
popular. We are approaching 80 passengers booked with good space still
available.
If cruising and folk music is your thing, than this cruise is definitely
for you. The FOLK LEGACY TRIO will be doing “private group only”
shows just for our group.
And for those really ambitious, take a look at our 32 night South
Pacific, Tahiti and Hawaii round trip cruise from Los Angeles. That
group is already approaching twenty and should be a lot of fun.
As 2024 progresses we are looking at announcing other trips as well.
Be on the lookout for a fifteen night Hawaiian Island cruise, a Viking
River cruise (in central Europe) and a 10 night Israel, Holy Land tour.
There will be many opportunities for Vegas Voyager Travel members
coming up next year. More info to follow but as always, call us anytime.
* Vegas Voyager Meetings: I am happy to announce our
upcoming Vegas Voyager Travel Club meetings.
Our 1st meeting will be Sunday November 5 th at the Sun City
McDonald Ranch Community Center at 11:00 am. Our 2nd meeting
will be Monday November 6 th at Sun City Summerlin Desert Vista
Community Center, also at 11:00 am.
We will be discussing upcoming trips and there will be a special
presentation by a representative from Viking River and Cruise Line.
We live in an amazing city and we forget what
it’s like to be on the other side of a tourist
economy. So, when we get the chance to visit
elsewhere, it’s hard not to notice what it’s like to be the tourist for a
change.
When I go to gift shops in other
lands, the first order of business
is to buy something cute and
adorable for my granddaughter
that she will play with for about
10 minutes. So, what if it costs
$50. That’s not the point!
The next part is when I get
creative and find another gift
that will make noise. I found
junior bagpipes in Scotland.
Naturally I got the matching jacket to go with it. Yes, I’m sure my
daughter will hate me.
In Ireland I found a small Guernsey cow and a pretty t-shirt featuring
sheep to go with everything else. In England there was a Paddington
bear. When at the beach earlier in the summer it was a mermaid and
a music box.
I’m A Tourist
The Real Garden of Eden
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Tucson lies in a basin between two Saguaro
National Park sections with the Santa
Catalina Mountains rising at
the city’s northern edge. Comprised of two separate
districts, on the east and west sides of Tucson, the
park’s low-elevation desert conditions are exactly
right for the more than 1.5 million saguaros
growing here.
Slow growing Saguaros are Arizona’s signature
plant. They take as much as 100-years to grow
their first arm and mature, Plants can reach 40-
feet and weight 8-ton, although recently they have
been vulnerable to excessive temperatures.
Abundant stands of saguaro grow here as well as
prickly pear cactuses with pads the size of dinner
plates; barrel cactus larger than fire hydrants and spindly ocotillo with
long, thin gray branches reaching skyward. The only palm tree species
natives to the Sonoran Desert are fan palms, whose life expectancy can
be 500-years.
Tucson is sixty miles north of the Mexican border and the park abuts
the Tohano O’odham Reservation straddling Mexico. At 2.8 million
acres (about the size of Connecticut) the reservation is our country’s
second largest, after the Navajo Reservation that encompasses parts of
October 2023
As for us, our grown-up gifts are whiskey fudge, books of all the
places we go and tiny highland cows and sheep for the bookshelf. I
have absolutely no place for anything else.
Oh yes, also a huge bill from the cruise ship that I will treasure
always.
People are nice when you visit
other countries. You have big eyes
and you’re looking to soak up the
surroundings, so any memento
offered is greatly appreciated.
As soon as you mention a
grandchild, the suggestions start
flowing. Each one is noisier
than the last and it empowers
grandparents.
And say you hail from Las
Vegas and they smile knowingly. Not sure why.
The tours are kind of fun too. Guides are proud of their country but
you can’t see anything from a bus. They need to put bubble tops on
them so you don’t take a picture of the head in the seat in front of you.
And that’s why I buy the books and why my coffee table will collapse
soon.
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.
Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.
This region was originally a tropical rainforest with swamps and
jungle. Then came the volcano period. During this period, millions of
years ago, the area was a cauldron of lava-spewing
volcano followed by a draught.
The ancestors from so many years ago were the
Tohono O’odham people. Today they are identified
as the Hohokam.
Climate change triggered the Hohokam to
change crops they were planting and make
substantial improvements to their irrigation
systems. Consequently, the Hohokam became
accomplished harsh climate agriculturalists. The
Hohokam people revered the sun and were master
astronomers as well.
Hohokam petroglyphs can be found in the park.
You may also encounter spirals which are one
of the more common petroglyph symbols in the Sonoran Desert.
For several years, I lived in Tucson and Saguaro National Park. For
me and many others, its tranquility and raw beauty is the real Garden
of Eden.
Decisions, Decisions
By: Mark Richards / Games & Shows
The below questions give you a choice of an A
or B answer. Which choice would you select?
1. According to USA Today, the age of “21” is the average age for most
married women to do THIS with their lives:
(A) Have a baby OR
(B) Leave their husband
It’s A Matter of Trust
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
Devora Gray speaks a “man’s language.”
As a sexuality coach and 15 years of
experience as a relationship counselor, she
provides guidance to clients – 90% who are men and 40% who are
seniors. She says most sexual issues boil down to this: when the
woman doesn’t feel sexy, neither does the man.
“Couples in their fifties and sixties find their relationships gradually
turn into sexless ones,” Gray said. “When the trust of acceptance isn’t
there anymore, the sex falls apart.”
Many men want to regain the pulsing heartbeat of intimacy with
their partner while countless women desire the lost tender touch. But
most women step back
due to puritanical
social pressures, the
Barbie Syndrome of
being perfect in size
and shape and the
effects of menopause.
Gray said if men
want to recapture
their partner’s loving
caresses, they need to
become comfortable
Devora Gray
discussing their needs.
To master a sex-filled
relationship, Gray suggests taking a week to engage in non-sexual
touching.
A tap on the arm or a graze on the neck to evoke intimacy and
encouragement. The following week, a hand or foot massage, avoiding
additional physical contact no matter how hard hearts may be
fluttering. These weekly sessions become progressively steamier.
“Finding what forms of sex couples enjoy together is deeply satisfying
and they will float on a cloud of contentment,” she said.
When each partner learns to trust, they confirm their dedication
toward rediscovering the happy and sensual moments from long ago.
Achieving this connection, Gray stated, leads the man to reclaim his
sense of manhood and confidence.
The second honeymoon doesn’t stop there. Gray said to create
moments of bliss that turn up the heat every day. “Couples should give
and receive sensuality, whether in a touch, a kiss, or a full-scale ‘get
down and dirty,’ lovemaking session,” she said.
“This gradual connection shows there’s a burning light at the end
of the sexual tunnel. They can recapture the warmth of desire they felt
for each other in the past, and they can stoke a new kind of fire for the
future.”
It's Halloween. Time for Brain-Healthy SPOOK-ghetti!
By: Jan Fair / A No-Brainer Minute
I
'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. That was said by Canadian author
Lucy Maud Montgomery in Anne of Green Gables. I agree. And I'd add that I'm so glad
I live in a world where there's a Halloween. Such a fun holiday. The only hitch is we need to be
vigilant when it comes to what we eat. So in the recipe below, check the label of that jar of spaghetti
sauce and avoid ones with a lot of sugar, salt & chemicals. And, of course avoid Halloween candy.
*Good-4-U Spook-ghetti with Eyeballs
• spaghetti sauce (jar or homemade)
• spaghetti (spinach/bean/etc); or use
a spiralizer to make spaghetti out
of zucchini and/or other squash
• mozzarella balls (vegan or fresh)
• black olives (sliced)
Add spices such as garlic, oregano, etc.
[Optional 5th ingredient: meat balls or
vegan meat balls.]
*Good-4-U recipes have just
4 ingredients (plus spices) so they're
quick & easy no-brainer recipes.
