What is Happening With Home Prices?
If you are thinking of selling your home, you may be feeling unsure about what’s happening with
home prices and fear whether or not the worst is yet to come. That’s because today’s headlines
are painng a very negave picture. Contrary to those headlines, prices aren’t in a freefall. The
latest data tells a very different (and much more posive) story.
If we take a look at the year‐over‐year data, home prices stayed posive – they just appreciated
more slowly than they did at the peak of the pandemic.
In the rst half of 2022, home prices were climbing, and they peaked in June. Then, in July, home
prices started to decline slightly. By roughly August or September, the trend began to stabilize. As
we look at the most recent data for the early part of 2023, we see a recent rebound in momentum
with prices cking back up. Monthly changes in home prices are gaining steam, slowly but surely,
as we move into the busier spring season.
Do What I Say, Not What I Do
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Hey Sarah, if you call me one more time, I
swear, I’m going to reach through the phone
line, shove my arm down your throat, pull out
your damn heart and feed it to the birds!”
I was (as you can sense) “annoyed.” And as
I was screaming such potential threatening
behavior, my Rana very calmly looked at me
and gently advised, “You do know that it’s a
recording.”
Catching my breath, I realized that she
was (as always) correct. But I have to admit
receiving such phone call every day, three times
a day, finally go to me.
“Sarah” (and I doubt that’s her real name)
was trying to inform me of various Medicare
benefits. She wanted to share the “great news”
about the available options with yours truly.
And to my embarrassment, notwithstanding
what I have been urging Vegas Voice readers in
our “Scams, Schemes & Senior Safety” columns, radio and podcast
segments, YouTube video broadcasts, and even presentations around
the valley, I failed to follow my own advice.
I don’t think I was being a hypocrite but no matter what I said and
no matter how many times, I hung up the phone, like my PILL (partner
in love & life) may at times do, I was being ignored.
At first I was polite in my rejection of their offer, then I raced to see
how fast I could disconnect the call. But no matter what I did, Sarah
kept calling.
I even played along to determine how long I could keep them on the
line. On one occasion, I was extremely cordial in thanking them for
thinking of me and caring about my medical issues.
I described in vivid details (including sound effects) that I was
suffering from, among other various ailments, gout, syphilis and
continuous gas. On and on, I rambled about my medical needs and
humiliating flatulence problems.
For the record, it was 4 minutes, 13 seconds (yes, I timed it. As you can
tell, I have no life and plenty of free time) but although the supervisor
finally disconnected the call, they still kept contacting me.
Now I know that the correct action would be to notify the Federal
Trade Commission about such “Do-Not-Call” violations but when I
realized that my complaint would be one of (literally) millions, what
good would that do?
And even though I have scam blockers
apps on my cell phone, somehow (and giving
Sarah some credit) she was able to successfully
navigate via another phone number.
So, after my last encounter, besides just
hanging up, I came up with another plan.
Henceforth, I’ve decided not to answer my
cell when it rings unless I know the identity of
the caller or recognize the number listed. If the
call is legit and he/she leaves a message, I’ll
call them right back.
So far “straight to voicemail” appears to be
working although a few Vegas Voice columnists
(who shall remain anonymous) advised that
they “don’t like leaving messages.” But no doubt, they’ll learn.
As for Sarah, while I’ll miss her persistent offers, I’m confident she’ll
get over it.
It’s Father’s Day - Where’s the Remote?
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
always find it interesting how the store ads
I differ between the build up to Mother’s Day vs.
Father’s Day.
For Mother’s Day the stores push products that are aimed at making
mothers more attractive to fathers! Such things as cosmetics, perfume,
fetching apparel, etc.
I thought the whole idea was to give Mom
a day off. Isn’t that approach simply making
mothers work even harder than they already do?
Or, to take that concept a step further, for
mothers, the stores run ads featuring stoves,
washers, dryers, and vacuums. Resulting in more
work for Mom!
Sure, a fancy washing machine is better than
sending Mom down to the river with a shiny new rock to beat the
babies’ diapers clean, but something still seems slightly screwy about
this whole picture.
Then there are the Father’s Day ads which attempt to create the
illusion of the hard-working family man. Ads loaded with gas grills,
power washers, lawn mowers, etc. which, quite honestly, make me
laugh since I see women using these items as much as men.
It’s probably a more realistic portrayal of the modern American Dad
when the stores feature fishing gear, golf clubs, hammocks, and bigscreen
televisions to purchase for his special day. It’s even feasible that
wives pitch in to help the kids buy Dad these items so that he will use
them and stay the heck out of the way so the rest of the family can get
some work done around the house!
There are other obvious commercial discrepancies. Stores display
a variety of hair shampoos, and blow dryers for
moms in May, only to be later replaced with
deodorant, Rogaine, and nose and ear hair
trimmers for dads in June.
Restaurants offer elaborate brunches including
prime rib, and chocolate-dipped strawberries for
Mom’s Day, while pizza-delivery coupons and
sales on beer and chips dominate Dad’s ads.
Mother’s Day observers are enticed to attend a
symphony concert of romantic classics while, for
their special day, fathers receive a discount to an Elvis impersonator
show.
Despite such discrepancies, fathers know it’s the thought that counts
- now, where’s the remote?
Mike Murphy is a retired teacher/coach. His book of humorous
articles titled “Tortoise Crossing - Expect Long Delays” is available
& A for Sun City Retirees
Q Q: Why is it no longer common to give a
retiree a watch? A: Retired folks don’t care what
time it is.
Q: What’s the best way to describe retirement?
A: A coffee break that never ends.
Q: Why does a retiree often say he doesn’t miss the job but he misses
the people he used to work with? A: He’s too polite to tell the whole
truth.
Q: What do you call a retired boss? A: Anything you want.
Q: And most importantly: What is the key to a successful
retirement? A: Not dying on the job.
*You Know You’re Getting Old When:
1. The gleam in your eye is from the sun hitting your bifocals.
2. You feel like the morning after the night before except you
haven’t been anywhere.
3. You decide to procrastinate, but then never get around to it.
4. You look forward to a dull evening.
5. You sit in a rocking chair but can’t get it going.
6. You look forward to calls from telemarketers.
7. Dialing long distance wears you out.
8. “Getting lucky” means you found your car in the parking lot.
*Medical Advice: I told my doctor I get very tired when I go on a
diet, so he gave me pep pills. Guess what happened? I ate faster.
*To my fellow former New Yorkers: I was walking around my
Sun City community when I saw a bumper sticker on a parked car that
read, “I miss the Bronx.” So, I broke the window, stole the radio, and
left a message that read, “I hope this helps.”
*And finally: The older a man gets, the further he had to walk to
school as a boy.
Stay Out of Probate
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
was contacted by an out of state reader asking
I for information on Nevada probate issues.
It appears, (just as in the case of guardianship
before we had the law changed)
a person has to be a Nevada
resident in order to administer
the probate of an estate.
The reader and his cousin
were the only heirs to the estate
of a lady who passed away in
Las Vegas. The decedent did
not have a trust to protect her
property.
Therefore a professional
administrator was to be
retained. Susan Hoy of
Nevada Guardian Services
was chosen.
While such a professional private guardian didn’t seem to be an issue,
what became the problem was that no guidelines were established by
the administrator and the cousins as to what property and items could
be disposed of - be it sold, donated, or thrown away.
Sadly, the home was listed for sale and all of the belongings of the
decedent were disposed of without notification to the family.
Our reader told me that his aunt was known as the family’s
photographer. He remembered that on all occasions she could be seen,
camera in hand, documenting the event.
Sadly, those memories were of no value to administrator Susan Hoy.
All photographs were thrown away.
Final Wishes
– Nevada
Legislature
Our Vegas Voice Rana
Goodman holds up
additional petition book
as she prepares for her
testimony. Rana appeared
before the Nevada
Legislature Assembly’s
Health & Human Services
Committee in support of
SB 239 - our Final Wishers,
death with dignity bill.
The Vegas Voice and
its readers submitted over
1600 petitions in support of
such legislation.
That disclosure hit me quite hard since, when sorting through a
large box of assorted photographs after my parents passed away, I found
letters written to my mother in 1941 by her sister, who passed away at
age 17 from polio.
I was named after that aunt;
thus, those letters are treasures
to me. Just as those pictures
taken by my reader’s aunt were
to him.
I started doing research
and found under Nevada law
(NRS 144.040) what a probate
administrator was designated
to do. Such responsibilities
include a complete inventory
of all the real and personal
property of the decedent. And
upon failure to do so, the court
can hold the representative
liable for such gross negligence
or willful conduct.
Note that one does not to go through probate if all of the property
belonging to the decedent is listed in a living trust document. That
trust would normally contain a will in addition outlining the wishes
of the person.
In the absence of a trust, we all need to make sure our wishes
and personal belongings should be listed or willed to specific family
or friends. Let’s not leave it up to strangers to decide if things, (be it
property, photographs, or items of sentimental value) are worthwhile
to save.
Our Any Content Editor (ACE) Rana Goodman addresses the Sun
City Summerlin Investment Club last month. Rana and Publisher
Dan provided updated Guardianship information, distributed the
Guardianship Nomination form as well as led the discussion over our
Vegas Voice Scams, Schemes & Senior Safety Program.
It’s Miss Beadle!
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
Last month I had the pleasure of being at
the Cherry Blossom Festival in Marshfield
Missouri.
This one was their 18 th annual event
and it celebrates and showcases Missouri
heritage, along with guest speakers,
political dignitaries, food, crafts, vendors,
performances and more.
They also have celebrities there to meet
and greet the attendees and sign autographs.
I was honored to have been asked to be a part
of it.
Some of the other celebrities were Jerry
Farewell and Thank You
By: Evan Davis / Entertainment Director
It’s been fifteen years since moving to Las Vegas.
14 years since I’ve been
doing my web site, emails,
and calendar of local events.
Nearly nine years with The Vegas Voice writing
entertainment articles, producing and hosting
their variety shows at numerous locations.
A new chapter of my life is starting once again, as
I will be moving out of town, but my Evan Davis
Jazz Calendar and emails will continue to update
you weekly.
In Sandi and my 15 years in Vegas, we’ve moved
7 times. Renting and owing homes, country club
living, high rise living on the Strip, we have pretty
much seen and done it all. Just like Vegas reinvents
itself almost daily, I’ve grown and changed in my
dozen plus Vegas years.
Each step has allowed me to look back and say, “I’ve got nothing to
regret.” I’ve met some wonderful and talented people and performers
who appreciate the music scene.
Some were truly friends and some just, well you know, liked you for
what you could do for them. I don’t think there is a venue in town that
I couldn’t walk into without knowing someone.
Exiting a room always took 20 minutes as I said my good nights to
friends and acquaintances. For someone who couldn’t sing, dance, or
tell jokes, I felt comfortable, especially on stage with a mic in my hand.
Now it’s time to make a new home and be closer to family.
A big part of our Vegas family was The Vegas Voice. They gave me the
opportunity to be creative with producing shows while I tried to expose
as many performers as possible to the local fan base.
One of my first shows was at the Silverton with a packed house of
An Afternoon Affair to Remember
Our final Afternoon Affair for the season was held last month at
Sun City MacDonald Ranch. Sometimes there are simply no words to
describe how fabulous and wonderful the show was. Backstage before
the show (L-R) Sun City MacDonald Ranch’s Loizel Jimenez and Mary
Fellows, E’stefano Disanto, Vegas Voice host Evan Davis, Michael Sinatra,
Pete Peterkin and Johnny Fabulous.
over 1200. I co-hosted with Bob Anderson and included about two
dozen of Vegas’ best - and when Clint Holmes and Frankie Scinta
joined the stage with Bob, I didn’t think it could get any better.
I got that same thrill with a crowd of 90.
The Vegas Voice is a magazine that covers all
aspects of life for the active adult community.
Entertainment solely for them was new to them,
and they allowed me to run with it. From writing to
producing shows, to videos interviews and podcasts,
we ran the whole spectrum.
The Vegas Voice opportunity happened with the
vision of my friend and confidant, Night Life editor
Sam Wagmeister, who said, “Hey let’s bring Evan
aboard and bring entertainment to our magazine
and focus it around Evan’s blog and calendar of
events.”
From the very first gigs I put together at the
Mediterranean Grill, The Mad Greek and Blue Fire,
all pre-Vegas Voice, to my last gig at Sun City MacDonald Ranch, it’s
been a blast. Thank you Vegas Voice family Dan, Rana, Ray, Bill, Jonny,
Anna and Sam. You guys are the best!
We’ll Miss You
Sandi &
Evan Davis at
our Vegas Voice
“Goodbye”
luncheon.
Notice the cake’s
message.
Our Evan Davis “Drops the Mic”
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Over eleven years
ago, the Las
Vegas music scene
priced itself out of most locals’ budgets.
Evan Davis, hungry for an economical
alternative to ever increasing prices on
The Strip, bravely donned a producer’s
hat and began introducing top quality
entertainment through performances at
local cafes and supper clubs.
Two years later, Davis joined The Vegas
Voice, producing nearly 100 shows and
extravaganzas starring some of the
town’s top names…many of whom were
near unknowns before teaming with
the magazine’s Entertainment Editor.
Last month, Davis announced the time
had come to “drop the mic”, ending his
tenure as producer and Entertainment
Editor.
“Evan was the person who gave me
my first gig in town at the Blue Fire,”
remembered the enchanting vocalist
Rita Lim. “He introduced me to the Las Vegas community.”
“Evan has created an amazing amount of opportunity for singers
and musicians,” credits Doug Taylor, a musician and vocalist in town
since 1982. “He afforded us the opportunity to show what we could do.”
During his Vegas years, Taylor acknowledged significant industry
changes. Early on, performers were contracted to one venue for two
years or more. Today Taylor says, performers scurry for one-nighters.
“Evan went out and found places for us to perform. He did the legwork.”
Rick Dougherty, who fell victim to an ownership change after 15
years with the Kingston Trio, teamed with the group’s alum George
Grove and rock and roller Jerry Siggins to form the Folk Legacy Trio.
The apprehensive trio, not ready to retire, wondered if their performing
days were over.
With one of his tightly knit variety shows just days away, Davis
squeezed them into the lineup. Today, the trio tours the country playing
before sold out audiences.
“He introduced us in the perfect way to our first audience and he did
it in such an enthusiastic way that it gave us confidence. He has a great
sense of how to make things sparkle.”
August 14, 2014, on Facebook, Vegas Voice publisher, Dan Roberts,
announced Davis would take over a newly created position, announcing,
“Through his Evan Davis Jazz Blog, (he) has become one of the most
recognizable faces in the lounges, nightclubs and showrooms around
town. I look forward to working with Evan and helping create an even
better product to inform and promote the local entertainment scene.”
Davis quickly fulfilled that prophecy, scheduling the twice monthly
Afternoon Affair and a sold out tribute to Sinatra’s 100 th birthday
Joining Evan are (L to R) Rita Lim, wife
and Vegas Voice Fashion Cents columnist
Sandi & Pia Zadora
Evan with (L to R) Anne Martinez, Elisa Fiorillo,
Jonathan Karrant, Chadwick Johnson, Amanda
King, and Chris Phillips
starring Gary Anthony at the Italian American Club. He followed up
with the Spirit of ’45 salute to veterans
that packed over 750 into the Silverton
Casino’s showroom.
The all-star lineup featured comedian
Marty Allen, singers Clint Holmes,
Frankie Scinta, Bob Anderson, Mark
Giovi, Bill Fayne and relative newcomers
at the time including Chadwick Johnson,
VV
Elisa Fiorillo, Michelle Johnson and
others who have emerged in the national
spotlight.
Rita Lim, who starred in Davis’ final
show, summed up Davis’ contributions.
“He opened doors for me. I will always
carry that very first friendship with
Evan.”
And on a personal note, I will miss
my friend and our weekly breakfasts. I,
along with everybody at The Vegas Voice
wish Evan & Sandi all the best in their
new Florida life adventures.
How many of these Baker’s Dozen words of
wisdom apply to you?:
1. As I have grown older, I’ve learned that
pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing
everyone off is a piece of cake.
2. As I’ve gotten older, people think I’ve become lazy. The truth is
I’m just being more energy efficient.
3. It’s not my age that bothers me, it’s the side effects.
4. I’m not saying I’m old and worn out, but I make sure I’m
nowhere near the curb on trash day.
5. There is no such thing as a grouchy old person. The truth is, once
you get old you stop being polite and start being honest.
6. He says I keep pushing his buttons. If that were true, I would have
found “Mute” by now.
7. God promised women that good and faithful husbands would be
found in all corners of the world. Then he made the earth round……
and laughed and laughed and laughed.
8. Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it the
most never use it.
9. I haven’t gotten anything done today. I’ve been in the Produce
Department trying to open the stupid plastic bag.
10. Apparently, RSVPing to a wedding invitation “Maybe next time”
isn’t the correct response.
11. Turns out that being a “Senior” is mostly just googling how to
do stuff.
12. Sometimes the Universe puts you in the same situation again to
see if you’re still an idiot.
And finally: As I watch this generation try to rewrite our history,
one thing I’m sure of - it will be misspelled and have no punctuation.
Fireflies & Worms
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
If you were a city girl, chances were that either
your family or a friend’s family had a country
house for the summers. And, if you were lucky,
your Mom and Dad knew all the fun things to do outdoors since there
was a no TV back there.
Our country house had a screened-in porch with two rockers and
Daddy would sit out there and read every afternoon. Of course, we went
to the small store at the end of the road for treats and the paper each
morning too. You could listen to the rustling leaves and enjoy the light
breezes coming through the screens.
I created my own world on the side of the house between two fully
grown pine trees. I could crawl in and pretend it was a cave, sit in pine
needles and play with pinecones.
Sometimes I brought my dolls out there for a party. I even had a
little tin swimming pool and all the neighbors’ kids were naked.
We also found a duckling on the road who had been separated from
the mother so we took her in and raised her in the bathtub until she
was old enough to go to a friend’s farm. They had white swans so
imagine our surprise when she developed and it turned out she was
a he with the most beautiful feathers we ever saw! He went on to rule
that farm.
We had a brook behind the property and you could fish there too.
My mother was a real country girl when we were there.
She could make a fishing line and hook, dig out worms and climb
trees to throw out the line.
Back then I didn’t mind worms.
But the best evenings were taking empty jars down a dark road and
catching fireflies. We would run and run until the jar was full and
bring them back to light up the porch.
Childhood summers were innocent and years later I went back
and my pine trees were gone. But memories of fireflies, worms and
tranquility stay with me.
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.

The Docksiders
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
The Docksiders have sailed into Las Vegas and
I am glad. The show, anchored by three-time
Grammy nominee Kevin Sucher is a Yacht Rock
Residency.
Sucher is producer, band leader, and
one of the singers. On stage and off, he’s a
likable guy that you would want to live next
door.
A residency in Las Vegas was his dream
and he is making his dream come true. We
get to reap the benefit.
You’ll be delighted as you sit back
and enjoy the ensemble of singers and
musicians that fill the stage at Notoriety in
downtown Vegas and sing about those who love Pina Colados..... See
you’re already singing the words in your head aren’t you!
The word “rock” usually scares me off, but this is smooth music. The
tunes are nostalgic sojourns that take you back to soft rock favorites
from the 70s and 80s. You’ll hear their renditions of mainly mellow
favorites from entertainers including Olivia Newton-John, Kenny
Loggins, Steely Dan, The Carpenters, and Hall & Oates.
Their Abba Dancing Queen routine was delightful. The visuals on
the screens enhance the experience.
This being Las Vegas, you can expect the mandatory changing of the
garb. Which means Kevin changes from one sparkly jacket to another.
But that’s fine and his wife and fab singer Erin’s dresses bring the
female glitz to the act.
This is a true ensemble production. Some
of the band members who hailed from the
Midwest became official Las Vegas residents.
In addition to Kevin, the group includes
his talented singer wife Erin, singer
Justin Rodriguez, guitarist Larry Esparza,
Saxophone Clay Konnor, drummer Chris
Kollman, Anthony Jordan on the bass, and
Theo Merriweather on the keyboards.
“Hold Me” because “This is It” and
you “Have to Believe in Magic” as you sway and sing along You’ll be
Thursday nights at 7 pm at Notoriety. Enjoy!
By: Liz Breier / This & That
Recently a friend fell ill in a public place and
felt distraught at having made a bit of a mess.
I almost felt worse for her being embarrassed
than I did for her falling ill.
It reminded me how
frequently any or many of
us have had “moments.”
And especially as we age, we
should not feel ashamed at
our situations.
If you have ever lost
consciousness, then you
know that more than likely,
you may “come to” and find
you have lost bladder control
– not fun, but a fact of life.
Who has fallen and caused a
scene because they cracked
open their noggin and made
a bloody mess?
How about falling and not being able to get up because you broke
your hip. It happened to my own Dad many years ago right in the
middle of his granddaughter’s band recital.
Years ago, a friend stood up from the table in a restaurant and his
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
Last month I did something ridiculous;
something I laughed at in the past.
When I previously scoffed and giggled
for such action, mind you, it was before
I was a senior (but don’t be asking how senior I am, I’m not
telling).
And you don’t need to know how old I was the first time I
did it.
I doubt anyone on the lower spectrum of the senior scale
would do it, so I’m not denying I’m up there, or that age had
something to do with it. However, I’m still not disclosing my
age.
You’re probably going to do it soon…or not. Maybe you
did it already! Just understand that I couldn’t believe it when
I discovered what I was actually up to!
“Really?” I said, sadly.
I’m assuming my brain went on pause for a minute. When
it righted itself and I took stock of the situation, my heart skipped
several beats.
The pitter patter part wasn’t alarming, but the stable part of my
brain couldn’t believe it. “Are you serious? What are you thinking?! Oh,
pants fell to his ankles. After dinner we went shopping for suspenders
for him!
A very tall friend fell in a parking lot and we could not get him up. It
took 3 of us and some passers-by to get him upright again.
We need to laugh this off and move on.
Many of us cannot walk
as spritely as we once did.
Crossing a street or in a
parking lot we sometimes
delay traffic because of our
lack of surefootedness.
No kidding, it’s just part of
life and living and not a thing
we can do about it. Just smile
and wave at the driver that
was delayed and thank them
for their patience (hopefully).
The alternative to so many
potential mishaps as we age
is not having that luxury.
Accept that things don’t work as well as they used to and sometimes
wait. You’re not!”
“Unfair!” I replied. “This isn’t a thinking action. It’s more reflexive.”
“In that case you scored a hundred,” said my brain.
“Your reflexes are working perfectly. I saw that finger action,
deliberately pushing and pressing! You should be proud of
yourself; it was very striking!”
“Enough,” you say! “What did you do, Dianne?”
Hmm… maybe I shouldn’t tell. It might color your opinion
of me. Or maybe not, if you’re on the north side of the senior
scale. Perhaps you’ll even understand.
Believe it or not, I picked up my home phone this
morning and actually tried to change the channels on my
TV with it!
I know, I know! That’s one of the most common jokes about
(mostly female) seniors. I won’t make excuses. I wasn’t half
asleep. I’d already had a cup of coffee. But don’t be laughing!
It just so happens there is a huge similarity between the
TV remote and the telephone remote...similar color, sameish
Opening Products
By: Heather Latimer / Heather’s Self-Help Tips
There’s nothing more exasperating than after
rushing to the store for an urgently needed
prescription you’re unable to open it after you
arrive home. I sought solutions from several Sun City residents who
live alone.
Two of them were not joking when they confessed they were so
desperate to open a plastic press-down-and-turn childproof container,
they waited in their driveway for the mailperson or a dog-walker to pass
and ask for help.
Jennifer stated that when entertaining, she took small bottles of
Schweppes ginger ale from the refrigerator and was embarrassed
when she kept everyone waiting whilst she tried to remove the caps.
I questioned a bartender who explained: “Schweppes is not to blame.
A plastic cap on any glass container can be difficult to remove - even
when using a metal opener.”
Extreme cold causes swelling. Before depositing the bottle in the
refrigerator:
1. Remove the cap;
2. Replace that same cap lightly but securely;
3. Then put the bottle in the refrigerator to cool. It will be easier to
open when you need it.
Reaching that delicious jam in a jar is simple. I’ve been doing it for
years. Using a meat tenderizing hammer, and a knitting needle, I bang
a hole in the lid and it releases instantly.
If you customarily paint your nails at home, manicurist Tikki says
it’s smart to purchase a two-handled steel nutcracker. Then, when the
bottle-cap is stuck so tightly it’s impossible to remove, just use the
nutcracker to give it a quick twist and the bottle will open.
Splitting Hairs on Ageism
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Nowadays, everyone’s on the bandwagon of
ageism, as if the term and its meaning were
just discovered yesterday. No one really spoke of
ageism out loud - and now that the topic is trendy,
it seems we’re splitting hairs about it.
Every little thing involving older-aged adults has become suspect
for ageism. This is why I try to help people understand ageism and
recognize its nuances through my classes, workshops, and talks.
The terms Ageist and Ageism have been placed at the forefront of
the latest social media topics, but there’s a real lack of understanding
of what ageism really is, so it’s often misinterpreted. And now, society
has taken hold and begun to interpret and apply ageism whimsically
and capriciously - sometimes, only acknowledging ageism when it’s
convenient for the next social media post.
We see movies picked apart for allegedly promoting ageism and for
their perceived lack of sensitivity to seniors. For example, Book Club,
The Next Chapter, has some viewers feeling the movie is ageist because
its promotions paint the women as “old, cute, and silly” instead of
highlighting the importance of their long-time friendship bonds.
It’s so ridiculous! Why can’t a movie featuring “cute and silly”
seniors just be a fun, inspiring movie?
So, what is Ageism? Robert Butler coined the term in 1969 to
describe discrimination against seniors, old age and the aging process.
He determined that ageism can be blatant, subtle, even casual and it
can be technological, visual, or implicit.
You probably don’t recognize ageism when you see it. And when
you do see it, you may be surprised you didn’t recognize it before. It’s
obvious; yet it’s so confusing.
Ageism is left to a lot of interpretations, perceptions, and
misconceptions. Not everything that seems like it’s ageism or ageist
actually is.
We must learn the meaning of ageism and understand its nuances
so we neither offend or discriminate, nor manufacture misunderstood
words, actions, and interactions into ageism. In other words, we can no
longer split hairs on ageism.
Let’s Talk About Fasting
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Fasting is defined as the act of abstaining
from food or drink for
a certain period of time.
There are many different
types of fasting, including intermittent fasting,
water fasting, juice fasting, and more.
One of the primary benefits of fasting is weight
loss. When you fast, your body uses stored fat for
energy, which can lead to a decrease in body fat
and overall weight.
This is particularly true for intermittent fasting,
which involves restricting food intake to specific
times of the day or certain days of the week.
Fasting has also been shown to improve insulin
sensitivity, which is particularly beneficial for
those with type 2 diabetes. When you fast, your
body becomes more efficient at using insulin to
transport glucose to your cells for energy.
In addition to weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity, fasting
has been linked to a variety of other health benefits. These include:
1. Improved cognitive function - Fasting has been shown to increase
the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein
that is critical for learning and memory. This can help improve
cognitive function and reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
2. Reduced inflammation - Fasting has been
shown to reduce inflammation in the body,
which is a key factor in many chronic diseases,
including arthritis, heart disease, and cancer.
3. Improved immune function - Fasting has
been shown to improve immune function by
increasing the production of white blood cells,
which are critical for fighting off infections and
diseases.
4. Increased longevity - Fasting has been
shown to increase lifespan in animal studies, and
some research suggests that it may have similar
effects in humans.
While fasting has many benefits, it is important
to approach it with caution and to consult with a
healthcare professional before starting a fasting
regimen.
How to Decorate with Art
by Crystal Czerkas Sarbacker
Have you considered using art to
Crystal Czerkas- enhance your home? To create
Sarbacker
a mood? To make a statement
about yourself? Art is one of the easiest ways to enhance
and personalize your home. Whether you’re a senior like me
who’s trying to simplify our home and eliminate clutter, or a
new retiree who’s moving to the next chapter of his life, this
is the perfect time to commemorate
the event with a
new art piece.
And don’t forget to select a
subject matter that demonstrates
your special interests.
Whether it’s travel, boating,
outdoors, sports, your favorite
flowers or hobbies, the painting
you select tells us about
you and what you like. Plus
the colors that attracted you to
your new painting or artwork
can be used like a color chart
to help you redecorate or
spruce up a room or an entire
house.
Your new painting becomes your home’s new focal point.
Imagine your new painting over a sofa with pillows in
complementary colors on adjacent chairs; or in your dining
room with flowers and placemats set on your table; or over
your bed with contrasting linens…Well, you get the picture.
A large
painting is
a natural
focal point.
But if you
have smaller
pieces of art
to display,
group them
together to
add importance to your collection. And add family keepsakes
and photos, to make your arrangement really unique. For
example, I’m considering putting together a wall grouping
of some of my Dad’s miniature drawings and the awards he
won. But I have a problem... How much space it will take to
display over a hundred awards?
Summer Begins!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
We got through the spring and now we’re
into the summer months. How do we keep
cool? One is to drink plenty of water (and not just
coffee, soft beverages or adult beverages).
Rule of thumb is to divide your honest weight (don’t cheat!) and
that’s the amount of ounces of water you need during the summer. It
sounds like a lot, but really isn’t if you figure it’s from wake-up time
to bedtime.
I also add to my water intake with fruit - watermelon, strawberries
or anything that will help replenish my water intake. It sure helps and
is refreshing!
I also drink lemon water. It’s beneficial in not getting indigestion
and helps to keep your internal temperature down.
I try not to have my oven on during the day but rather in the evening
when it’s a little cooler in the house. I also bake multiple items so that
the oven is on the least time.
Making banana bread at night not only makes the house smell great,
but also for breakfast meals. I discovered an easy recipe for banana
bread.
For several years I have used a “no fail” recipe from my mother’s
cookbook. The book has become so worn that I needed to patch the
binder.
Here’s an easy one I found for a “Three ingredient banana bread”: 3
ripe bananas mashed up, 2 eggs, 1 box of yellow cake mix (Note: nuts
are optional).
Mash the bananas. Mix in your eggs, add nuts if using them. Mix
in cake mix. Bake in 2 small loaf pans at 350 degrees for about 40
minutes. You can freeze one for later.
Whatever you can do to keep cool during the upcoming summer
temperatures will help keep you healthy. If you walk around the
neighborhood, try to do it early in the morning or later evening. That
goes for walking your dogs too.
Enjoy life - as we are not promised tomorrow!
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Finally! A great movie! A must see! It’s been a
long time since I’ve been emotionally moved
and feel
strongly about any recent film.
This PG-13 true story, Chevalier
is exceptional. It’s set in the 18 th
century and tells a tale of music,
love, and insurmountable adversity.
“Chevalier” is a 2022
biographical drama based on the
life of the famous French Caribbean
musician, Chevalier de Saint
George. He was the illegitimate
son of a slave owner and a French
plantation owner.
Being of mixed race, he rises to
improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist, composer
and champion fencer. It’s complete with a love affair and falling out
with Marie Antoinette. Sadly, his career was eventually hampered by
racism.
What Za Matter?
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
Do you love playing the game of Scrabble?
I did, until I learned it’s played with words
that never made the Oxford
English Dictionary.
As someone who loves words and finds the
Oxford really good reading, I’m offended by the
nonsensical words that make up the Scrabble
dictionary.
Have you ever entered a restaurant, sat down,
and ordered Za? Your waiter then scratches the
order upon his pad and leaves to give it to the
kitchen. Never happened!
Za is Scrabble’s version of Pizza. Now, please, tell
me in what universe are you ever going to say the
words “I’d like the Za”?
And that is just one of the many words that make
up the Scrabble dictionary. I know how the Oxford
was painstakingly put together over many years,
but who put this together? Certainly not a lover of
the English language.
The problem is, I love the game in spite of all this. So, if you want
to play with someone who refuses to play by the rules (of Scrabble, of
course), I’m your gal.
And speaking of rules and words, they also apply to food. Scalloped
Written by Stefani Robinson and directed by Stephen Williams, they
have developed a solid and handsome portrait of Chevalier. Actor Kevin
Harrison, Jr. walks the walk; part strut, part bounce, all self-confidence
and radiates from knowledge of being brilliant, gifted, and adored.
This prodigy makes him
appealing to the French rich and
famous with his cockiness and
charisma. Other excellent actors are
Samara Weaving, Lucy Boyton, and
Marton Csokas.
The music, set design and
production value are of top notch
quality. The costumes are excellent
depicting the 18 th century.
This magnetic historical fiction
story was beautiful, painful, filled
with high drama, and a surprise
ending. It is a visual treat as well as an auditory one. I am happy to rate
“Chevalier” with a big 5 out of a 5 movie rating!
It’s like ordering a delicious, rare filet mignon and getting a filet of
Enough of the things that make a literal person
cringe. I recently came across an old recipe I
used to make frequently but forgot about. It’s not
chicken cacciatore, just good old chicken in rice.
Give it a try and see what you think.
Easy Chicken in Rice: In large skillet, brown 2
seasoned skin-on chicken breasts (or thighs) in 2
tbs. olive oil. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and cook
until lightly browned.
Remove chicken from pan. Add one 28 ounce can
crushed Italian tomatoes, 1 tbs. onion powder, one
tsp. each kosher salt, ground pepper and dried basil
and ½ cup dry red wine. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Add one cup rice, 2 cups water and 1 tsp. salt. Stir.
Add chicken back to pan, cover and cook until rice
is done, about 20 minutes.
Check chicken for doneness. Taste for seasoning. Add julienned fresh
basil. Serve hot.
Homelessness Worsens
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Recent news stories paints a bleak picture of
the homeless crisis in Clark County. About
a year ago, Las Vegas conducted their annual
homeless census.
They reported a total of 5,645. Today, that number has ballooned to
over 14,000.
Residents are becoming increasingly vocal about seeing an
increasing number of homeless planting themselves near their homes.
The problem is the old adage NIMBY (not in my back yard). The
problem is so exacerbated now the new adage is NIMFY - not in my
front yard.
The issue is what to do about it? One thing that isn’t working but
occurs on a daily basis, is the police perpetually clearing the homeless
from wherever they find a place to “live.”
This doesn’t solve anything. All the homeless will do is relocate to
another neighborhood until the police are summoned again.
Politicians are masters of the “sound bite” but have little backbone
to act in solving the problem. In prior issues I mentioned one of the
common responses from elected officials from both parties that the
reason they don’t act is because “the homeless don’t vote.”
They will never publicly admit that of course but I know it’s true. I
have also previously mentioned that a workable solution is not as
difficult as one may think.
Creating shelter clusters by converting old rail cars into livable and
sanitary “homes” can relieve the problem. This isn’t my idea but one
that was successfully demonstrated in Las Vegas called the Veterans
Village!
Yes. It is a microcosm of a huge problem but this works! So, why not
expand on that program and give the homeless the same self-esteem
we all take for granted?
Warp Bubbles in the Bermuda Triangle
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Everyone, including the government, is
baffled by the missing ships and aircraft that, for
decades, vanished in the Bermuda
Triangle (aka Devil’s Triangle) without a trace. There
are numerous theories about what’s been happening;
however, there are no facts to back up their theories. Now
a new finding from Norway.
Logically, some think that pilots and boaters become
discombobulated like a mirage in the desert and lose
their way or run out of gas. Another possible explanation
suggests the activation of magnetic rock properties could be scrambling
compass readings.
People also blame UFO abductions, since there are many UFO sightings
in the area and, allegedly, an active, well-known underwater USO base
near Puerto Rico in the Bermuda Triangle’s bottomless waters.
The Arctic University of Norway discovered substantial underwater
craters off the coast of Norway, measuring up to 135 ft. deep and 2,650 ft.
wide. They claim that the cavities produce methane gas blowouts.
Like oxygen in water, methane gas seeps out of cracks in the
earth’s crust and creates various-sized bubbles that rise to the surface.
Researchers believe this could cause the inexplicable vanishing of ships
in the Bermuda Triangle.
When millions of little bubbles surface at once, ships could certainly
sink suddenly if the water beneath them turns to foam, which these craters
could be capable of doing. They also explain that vast methane bubbles
can sink ships depending on their relative position.
The boat is safe when it’s far enough from the methane
gas bubble or directly above it. However, if the methane
gas surfaces close to either side, its enormous pressure
can easily tilt the ship.
Although ships are affected more than planes, the
surrounding atmosphere also becomes contaminated.
Pilots flying over the Bermuda Triangle claim
1. Seeing the methane build up under the ocean floor and the effect of
these explosions, which cause a bubbling sucking vortex.
2. Unpredictable and dangerous weather changes.
3. Magnetic anomalies.
4. Instrumentation failure.
5. Technical and electrical fogs.
6. Eerie time discrepancies.
While modern technology can answer some of these issues, science
doesn’t have an answer for calming these pilots’ nerves or concerns.
A Transitional Month
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
June is transitional month, moving from
warm, pleasant days to hot and scorching
ones. Therefore, most of our physical labor and
preparation need to be completed as soon as possible.
For many “non native” flowering plants (such as roses) the hot
weeks ahead can cause them to go into a “summer dormancy”
with little or no growth. By mid-June you should prune away any
spent flowers, and damaged steams and branches.
This will help to reserve the plants’ energy so they can resume
blooming once the cooler autumn days return. All fertilizing should
be completed by now on these plants to prevent any new growth that
may become sun/heat damaged.
If you have, however, heat/
drought tolerant plants such as
lantanas, you can continue to
feed them and to prune away
spent flowers. This will encourage
continued blooming throughout
the summer months.
Now that the soil is warm, it is
the correct time to fertilize all palm
trees. Summer is also the best time
to plant new palms in your landscape.
Many succulents can still be planted during the summer months
too. You should, however, refrain from planting any “non natives”
after mid-June since they can easily get heat or sun stress/shock and
die.
While outdoors, protect yourself when working by wearing a widebrimmed
hat as well as protective gloves, (left over Covid) masks,
long sleeved shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes.
Aside from shielding you from sunburn and heatstroke, this
“outfit” will protect you from “possible dangers” lurking in or near
your garden.
Inhaling soil dust, especially where heavy construction is taking
place, can expose you to “Valley Fever” which is a potentially serious
fungal respiratory disease (showing an uptick recently in reported
cases.) Wearing a mask will protect you!
Certain insects can be living in and around your garden such as
Bark Scorpions, Black Widow Spiders, and Red Fire Ants. These
unwanted visitors can inflict very painful and highly allergic bites.
Lurking in trees and overhangs may be Africanized Bee hives.
These bees, when disturbed, attack in swarms inflicting cumulative
stings causing great pain, shock and even death! Keep yourself
covered and be safe!
About That Miracle Medical Procedure
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
Every day it seems as if there is a new miracle
remedy for looking younger. Whether you
see posts on Instagram or one of the many other
internet sites showing drastic “Before &
After’s”, it’s always good to remember,
photos can lie.
Many of the before photos look really
bad, often no make-up and uncombed
hair. Whereas the after photo is fully done
up. The lighting can also make a big
difference.
Another really important question to
ask if you are considering a procedure and
meeting with a doctor - are the photos he
shows for a procedure actually his patients that he performed the work
on?
The reason for this question is because many times the company
that provides the machines and equipment the doctors use also provide
literature that can include those photos for marketing purposes.
Also, should something go wrong, is it reversible? Like fillers. If you
get fillers and do not like them, is there an option to dissolve the type of
filler the doctor is using?
And most important to know, is this procedure one that your doctor
has done many times. Is this his specialty? You do not want to be that
first (or second) patient for a new procedure, or with new equipment.
One really good site to check for true
reviews is called RealSelf. There are
patients sharing photos and information
on every plastic surgery procedure you can
imagine. They will usually share the good
(and the bad) regarding the doctor and the
procedure itself.
Personally, I think it is more important
to know what could go wrong and what
the down side might be for anything we are
going to do electively so we are prepared
and know what to ask and what to watch out for.
The most important thing to do before any procedure is research,
research, research. Remember, it’s ok to ask questions - it’s your face
and body.
We are BUSY at the Nevada Senior Games
as we plan for our fall Games that start
in September, but we aren’t the only ones who are busy! There are
about 100 athlete qualifiers at our state Games last year who have
registered for the National Senior Games Association games to be held
in Pittsburgh, July 7-18, 2023.
NSGA’s national competitions
are held every odd numbered
year. Pittsburgh will welcome
over 10,000 athletes in 20
different individual and team
sports
One of the biggest events in NSGA’s games
will be the Celebration of Athletes ceremony complete with a Parade
of States, just like the Olympics opening ceremony. The Celebration of
Athletes is a combination opening and closing ceremony held in the
middle of the event schedule that celebrates the achievements of the
athletes.
The flag and sign bearers for Nevada are Robert Qualls of Reno and
Toni Miller of Henderson. Robert and Toni will lead the rest of Nevada’s
athletes in the ceremony.
The Celebration of Athletes ceremony will be hosted by the Pittsburgh
Pirates at PNC Park, with on field recognition and the Parade of States
happening prior to the game.
And if you’d like to be a part of the NSGA competition in 2025, look to
NSG to help you qualify in 2024. In the meantime, come to our Games
this year to see and experience Fitness For The Fun of It!
Toni Jackson - A Family
Affair
By: Betty Boyd / Love of the Sport
Toni Jackson has been playing tennis most of
her life. The greatest enjoyment is that now
she gets to play with her children.
When her children were younger, it was frustrating, but now
enjoyable. Toni plays doubles with her daughter in a women’s league.
She also plays doubles with her son, competing in local competitions,
including the Henderson games.
“It is such a rewarding sport, watching my children through the
years, and now they can beat me,” says Toni.
Tennis is great for exercise, and now being able to play alongside her
kids, the sport is now a family affair. Toni got started in tennis by her
mom teaching the game along with other kids. She played with her
siblings, watched tennis matches on television, and was exposed to the
sport at a very young age.
During high school, Toni played on the tennis team. Even after
getting married and having children, she never stopped playing.
Last year Toni and her daughter Tess competed in the World Team
Tennis held in St. George, Utah. They played with people with much
more experience, but in overall competition, were able to take second
place.
Toni has some tips for tennis players. The game is 85 percent mental
concentration, and you need to be mentally in the game all the time.
Your form is essential; ensuring you can read the other player’s and
reviewing their body language and strategy will help with your game.
Toni still loves tennis along with her family. Everyone has a great
time. It’s all in the family.
Toni has a family band called Mama’s Wranglers when she isn’t
playing tennis. She has a dinner theater in Henderson called The
Firelight Barn. For more information, www.FirelightBarn.com.
Camping or Glamping
By: Lisa Kemmerling / The Fashionable Traveler
Is it Camping or Glamping? In my 20’s we would
go camping in Lake Tahoe roughing it along
the river bank in dusty tents
or on a cot in the beautiful
Tuolumne Meadows, in breathtaking Yosemite
National Park.
This past Christmas, my amazing husband
asked me if there was something special I’d like
as a present? I wanted to rekindle my days of
camping for a number of years now.
What I didn’t want was sleeping on the ground
where an uninvited critter may make a surprise
visit in the night or all the “roughing it” accommodations I’d
experienced from my youth.
As an avid reader of both Travel & Leisure as well as Conde’ Nast
magazines, I’d seen these amazing camping or as they refer to them
“glamping” locations around the world.
And that’s how we settled on the beautiful Open Sky luxury
camping, outside of Zion National Park, Utah.
Turning down a dirt road and no signage to advertise, I started to
have some concerns. To my amazement, there were 10 canvas tents
sprinkled around the property visible from the reception area, but far
enough away from each other to feel like you’re alone in
the desert.
The tent itself was unlike anything I had ever seen with a modern
bathroom, including a flushing toilet, a king size bed and every
amenity you might expect in a 5 star hotel. The
best part was an outdoor fireplace, with cozy chairs
to stargaze and cook s’mores just like in my 20’s.
Adding a hike in Zion the following day, and
enjoying the peaceful quiet in the evenings, it’s a
perfect spot for finding your inner Zen moments.
My fashion consultant side said pack less and
be casual. For the evening Capri jeans, paired with
comfortable shoes, a casual shirt and a pullover
sweater were perfect for dinner under the stars.
Naturally hiking boots, and workout attire for a daytime hike in Zion
are a must. I didn’t worry about my clothes or what to pack. I took my
cues from my husband and only packed the essentials.
The moral of the story is sometimes camping is really not camping
after all. May the roads you travel lead you to many adventures!
Tackling the Refrigerator
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
Note: The title above doesn’t refer to William
Perry, the very large Chicago Bears defensive
tackle who was nicknamed the “Refrigerator.” I
don’t even know why I recall this piece of sports trivia. I’m not even a
football fan.
The refrigerator I’m
referring to is an actual
refrigerator that occupies
25 cubic feet of space in my
kitchen. It’s not new, but an
appliance we inherited from
the prior owner of the condo
in which we now live.
It’s in fine working
order. Except for one small
detail. An external piece of
plastic that won’t stay in its
intended place!
Are you familiar with the
base grill? You might know
it as the toe kick plate. Or
more likely, you don’t know it at all.
It’s one of those things that simply goes unnoticed because it resides
where the refrigerator meets the floor. You don’t see it unless you have
a seat at the breakfast table which affords a bird’s eye view of the toe
kick laying on its side, revealing all the horrors it has heretofore been
concealing.
Its mechanical purpose
is to allow airflow to cool
the condenser. But of more
significance to a domestic
goddess, it’s the part that
hides all the dust, missing
objects and deceased wildlife
that have found their way
under the refrigerator never
to be seen again. Unless the
toe kick falls.
I’m a proud do-it-yourself
person who dabbles in
fixing toilet bowl flappers,
assembling Ikea furniture
with no leftover parts, and
performing successful
operations on resistant
bottle caps. So, it’s no wonder one morning, about a week ago, on a
caffeine high and tired of staring at the dust, I decided it was time to
tackle the toe kick!
That was a month ago. Yet, this morning I’m still sitting at my table
staring at the repulsive mess behind the fallen toe kick.
So, why has the repair queen been procrastinating? Fellow
octogenarians – when was the last time you voluntarily lowered
yourselves to the floor with no idea as to how you were going to stand
again without summoning EMS?
What comes to mind in the current situation is the phrase “reality
bites.” It’s those moments “when the harsh pains and experiences of
life jolt you out of your fantasy.”
Unfortunately, at this age “harsh pains and experiences” aren’t mere
metaphors.
So, having experienced the harsh pains of lowering and raising stiff
joints to the floor and back, why am I even contemplating fixing that
damn toe kick? The answer is clear. It’s hard to admit that you can no
longer do what used to be easy to accomplish.
And that you should have the phone number of a handyman on
speed dial. But common sense doesn’t always prevail, and today might
be when I throw caution to the wind and tackle the refrigerator.
So please don’t be alarmed if you see the neighborhood fire truck
parked outside my building. The humiliation of being hoisted from
the floor may very well be offset by yet another successful DIY repair!
Sam The Cat Lover
By: Diane Rosen / Animal Magnetism
had a fun phone conversation the other day
I with a guy who is into cats big time. His name
is Sam Novak, and he loves cats like I love dogs
- completely, enthusiastically, and passionately.
Sam loves cats no matter what their circumstances or needs. He’s
been a cat parent, a cat rescuer and cat caregiver to dozens and dozens
of cats over the years.
Sam seems to draw cats in need out of the woodwork. He once had a
wooden sign on the porch of his Florida home that read, “We Take in
Strays.” Once he put that sign up, so many cats showed up, he swears
they knew how to read!
Are There Really No Bad
Cars Anymore?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
For those of us who grew up in the ’60s and
’70s, we knew there were cars you just didn’t
buy because the quality was so poor. As the Japanese manufacturers
moved into America and challenged the quality of domestic vehicles,
things got better quickly.
Competition breeds improvement, and it wasn’t long before the
domestic automakers were focusing on quality along with fuel
efficiency and safety. This was good news for consumers.
Sam lives in Vegas with his 13 cat kids. I asked him to name them
and he said, “My current kids are Mary and her children Miss Three,
Blaze, Lefty and Nero. Molly has no teeth. Sally has no teeth and a
broken tail.”
“Miss Pickles lost her front toes after being declawed, and Larry has
no eyes after being sprayed with a power washer when he was just a
few weeks old. The rest are Stanley, Tasha, Brucie and Glenn Binkles.”
I love it! Sam wants everyone to know that his house is spotless
and you’d never know cats live there, except for all the photos and
memorials to those who have passed.
There’s a group of people who go out every day with cat food and
water to help 40-50 feral cats that live around Towns Square and the
golf course across the street. Sam, of course, is one of them.
The people who feed these cats make sure they are neutered or
spayed, with the help of organizations and others. An easy way to tell
that cats have been “fixed” is by looking at their ears which have been
cropped or “tipped” at the corner. I had no idea!
Sam is a delightful guy with a huge heart, and cats of all kinds are
the beneficiaries of his love and devotion. They are his children. They
sure are lucky!
June 2023
For the past two decades, you’d have to search hard to find a vehicle
that any automotive enthusiast would warn against purchasing.
Domestic manufacturers were making vehicles as good (and often
better) than their European or Asian counterparts.
But since the automotive industry is a lucrative business, new
manufacturers outside of the established brands from Europe, Japan
and America stepped in to try to take away market share from the bigger
manufacturers. The Koreans came first with Kias and Hyundais, and
learned quickly that quality was important, so they improved, and
today, match the best in the industry.
Which brings us to the newest automotive import: VinFast. VinFast is
a Vietnamese-founded Singaporean-based private automotive company
that started in 2017. Its goal to bring electrified vehicles to the world.
And it has taken six years to introduce its first products to America.
Recently, VinFast hosted automotive journalists on a first-drive event,
where they got to experience the new VF8 electrified SUV. While the
vehicles were praised for their exterior design, they were savagely
brutalized on everything else.
From the horrible ride and handling to the terrible interior quality
to connectivity issues, the SUV was roasted with phrases like “abysmal,
“unbearable,” and even “terrible.” Not a good way to try to compete in
a market full of trustworthy Toyotas.
VinFast has already taken orders and delivered some vehicles to its
customers. If you are one of those or are in the market and heard about
the new VinFast, do your research and be sure to test drive one before
you buy it. Remember, caveat emptor; let the buyer beware.
River Cruise Adventures
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
“
Grandpa, tell me a story.” My sevenyear-old
granddaughter and nine-year-old
grandson love to hear me
tell them stories.
What they really are asking me is to tell them
about my youth. You could probably guess that I
like to tell them about my first recollections of traveling. For
as long as I can remember, I just loved to travel.
So, I tell them about my first
airplane ride on a Northwest Orient
Airline flight from Minneapolis to
New York in 1958. I was five years old
and I still remember bounding up
the stairs into this big four propeller
engine Stratocruiser for my flight
home from visiting relatives in the
Midwest. I just loved every second of
that trip.
Now, some sixty+ years later, I am still telling people about the fun
and interesting trips I love to take. And the trips I am most enthusiastic
about as I get older, is river cruising. This mode of travel has even
surpassed my love of ocean cruising.
I see the river cruises as everything a big ship cruise is, but in a much
less hectic environment. Don’t get me wrong, I like
the excitement of nightly Broadway style shows,
and lots of big ship “bells and whistles.”
But there is just something about a slow amble
down the Danube, or Rhine or even the Mississippi
River that just can’t be beat.
The river vessels only have 150 or so passengers.
The pace is quiet and calm. There
is a sight to see on every river bank
that may be no further than two
hundred feet away.
And the river ships can literally
pull over to the side of the river and
provide a walk along the river at just
about any time. It’s fun to watch the
beautiful scenery pass by. And yes,
shore excursions are included in the price of the river cruise.
That’s why we’re so happy to be working with the Viking River
Cruise folks and all the great river cruises they offer all over the world.
We are even working on a Vegas Voyagers group Viking River Cruise
for 2024. All information to follow.
Corpus Christi - Naples
of the Gulf?
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
In an elaborate promotion throughout North
America and Europe following the Mexican-
American War, the rogue founder of Texas’ picturesque gulf town of
Corpus Christi tried to bring people to his disreputable Shangri-La.
He described it as the “Naples of the Gulf,” a tranquil, sun-speckled
place, where sounds of sea birds and lapping water are always heard.
Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Corpus Christi sits roughly 150-miles
from the Mexican border. Typically, it’s a peaceful coastal town, though
throughout the mid-1800s, law-abiding settlers were unenthusiastic
to relocate to what many considered “the most murderous, thieving,
gambling, God-forsaken hole in the Lone Star country.”
In 1839, Henry Kinney,
former politician and
military officer, opened
a trading post on the
western shore of Corpus
Christi Bay. Kinney’s
trading post was in
fact a lively smuggling
operation.
Palms wave and the
surf is cool today, though
when Kinney arrived
this was the Republic
of Texas’ westernmost
outpost.
Removed from prying eyes of government officials, Kinney’s
ramshackle settlement didn’t fear the law and prosecution getting in
the way of a thriving business. Previous to General Zachary Taylor’s
arrival, Kinney’s deserted stretch of beach was ideal for importing
contraband.
General Zachary Taylor disembarked boatloads of United States
troops here in August 1845, on the eve of Texas annexation. Quickly,
upper brass were outraged with what they discovered.
When five thousand soldiers became stuck in Corpus Christi while
waiting for war with Mexico, the always resourceful Kinney recognized
an exceptional opportunity for profit. He offered every vice that a
stranded soldier could want.
Once the troops left, Kinney (who published his own newspaper)
enthusiastically began promoting Corpus Christi as “Naples of the
Gulf.”
A time when crimes were punished by gunfighters instead of the law
and unable to exploit new corruptions, Kinney drifted to Nicaragua
and then Mexico. He was gunned down in Matamoros in 1865, a
violent death to the founding scoundrel of Corpus Christi.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.
Congratulations! What Comes After The Party?
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
It’s graduation time, and I know all of you in
the Class of 2023 have eagerly awaited the
moment when you are thrust into the world on
your own, ready to tackle your dreams, excited to
take on the responsibility of making your
own way, making your own choices, making
your own mistakes, making your own bed...
or not...it’s up to you!
And, let me tell you, it’s a blast out here!
Now, unless you’ve already gotten a job
in your chosen field (snicker) you’ll be
heading home to Mom and Dad’s for a while
as you send out resumes and “weigh all
your options.” Of course, all that “making
your own choices” stuff mostly won’t fly if
you’re living at home.
Remember the old “my house, my rules” thing? Well, you may be 21,
but when you’re home, you still belong to them.
(In fact when you’re 35 and visit M&D with your own grown-up
family...still their rules! Obviously, when they visit your own grownup
house, you can tell them YOUR rules…which they’ll laugh at and
disregard because...well, “because they said so”).
After you take a few weeks off to relax, see old high school friends
and hang out at the old hangouts; and after you send out scores of
resumes (and hear more “NO”s than you’ve heard since you tried to
get to second base with Mary Elizabeth Schumick in junior high); and
after your mother stops crying because “my baby’s home!” and starts
approaching the laundry room the way
Marines approach an ISIS cave; and after
your Dad stops grinning and smacking you
on the back whenever he passes and begins
leaving the Classifieds in your bathroom
sink...at that point, you’ll want to check into
some “temporary” (snicker again) local
employment.
Your secret inclination might be to get
the old band back together. As a college
graduate, you’d be in much higher demand
at high school dances than you were in 10th grade!
The problem is that, invariably, someone, (like the lead singer) won’t
be available due to having gotten a job at Home Depot, plus he’s getting
married and his fiancée won’t let him. You could try to substitute your
great-uncle Earl, who’s 78, but once sang with The Manhattan Transfer,
and wants to get back into the business…not a good idea on SO many
levels.
So, although you planned to work for a multi-national company
in New York, followed by a reassignment to their office in London or
Rome...well, Pizza Hut’s not so bad, with tips, and all the pizza you can
eat, plus you get to put that little Pizza Hut sign that lights up on top
of your car. Sweet!
Or, if you’re female - not that a young lady wouldn’t work at Pizza
Hut, which certainly has its share of talented female college graduates
- you could also look into being a nanny, especially if you start in the
summer. Take a couple of weeks off first, just long enough to give young
parents a chance to experience the reality of having little children at
home all day.
By around June 20, those mothers will be offering you more money
than any multi-national company on earth. They’ll give you a car in
which to schlep their little ones, they’ll stock the fridge with all your
favorite foods, and they’ll give you their pass to the country club pool.
Shoot, if you can hold out until the end of June, you might score grad
school tuition!
After you land this good local job, you’re just a hop-skip-and-a-jump
from getting your own place - which should be way across town from
your parents, for obvious reasons. And, because you’ll need the deposit
and first-month’s rent, you simply have the old band over to practice at
your parents’ house four or five days a week, and abracadabra: they’ll
take care of everything!
So, hey, congrats again, and uh...well, good luck out here!...(snicker
#3).
American Gun Play
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
am not a gun aficionado. When I meet people,
I and they discover
that I am a Vietnam
veteran paratrooper, they automatically
get this notion that I love guns. Wrong.
Then it gets even worse when they
learn that I am an ex-Drill Sergeant who
trained thousands of soldiers to care for,
and properly fire their weapons before
they went to Vietnam. No, I do not love
guns, and I do not target practice, nor do I
frequent ranges to shoot up a month’s pay
for nothing.
I am the owner of guns (several), and
I keep them in good working order. I have them to protect my fortress
and loved ones, and to take along should the “stuff”-hit-the-fan.
I do not love them simply because they are a tool and not as a toy to
be played with. That would be like loving a hammer or a saw, and as
weird as society has become, I just don’t swing that way.
On the other hand, it is ridiculous to think that banning all guns
is the answer to this country’s woes. The cliche that if you take all the
guns away from the citizens, then only the criminals will have them is
still a self-evident truth.
The good guys will be without, while the bad guys will rule the roost
by being able to get them illegally. I believe a government attempt to
remove all guns would be akin to trying
to solve the drunk driving problem by
arresting the sober drivers as well.
Guns really do have a purpose. Just
think about it – our Presidents and other
federal officials may not be alive today if
the Secret Service officers protecting them
were unarmed in our sick society today.
Folks, it’s not a gun problem…it’s a
people problem that’s in need of being
handled. The effort should be placed
where positive things will result in order
for things to get done.
It’s my hope that sanity regarding guns will return to America soon.
Its been AWOL for far too long.
