When preparing to purchase a home...
If you’re getting ready to purchase a home, there are some key things
to keep in mind after you apply for your mortgage and before you
close on your new home. Here’s a list of things to remember:
Don’t Deposit Large Sums of Cash
Lenders need to source your money, and cash isn’t easily traceable.
Before you deposit any cash into your accounts, discuss the proper
way to document your transactions with your loan officer.
Don’t Make Any Large Purchases
It’s not just home-related purchases that could disqualify you from
your loan. People with new debt have higher debt-to-income ratios.
Since higher ratios make for riskier loans, borrowers may no longer
qualify for their mortgage. Making a large purchase may negatively
effect your credit score as well. WAIT until you own the new home
before buying ANYTHING.
Don’t Cosign a Loan for Anyone
When you cosign for a loan, you’re making yourself accountable for
that loan’s success and repayment. With that obligation comes higher
debt-to-income ratios as well, as it is as much your debt as the person
who you cosigned for.
Don’t Switch Bank Accounts
Lenders need to source and track your assets. That task is much easier
when there’s consistency among your accounts. Keeping everything
stable during the loan process will make things much easier for you.
Don’t Apply for New Credit
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a new credit card or a new car, new
credit can have a negative impact on your credit score and/or your
debt-to-income ratio. When your credit report is run by organizations
in multiple different financial channels (mortgage, credit card, auto,
etc.), it will have a negative impact on your FICO® score.
Don’t Close Any Accounts
Many buyers believe having less available credit makes them less risky
and more likely to be approved. This isn’t true. A major component of
your score is your length of credit history and your total usage of credit
as a percentage of available credit. Don't do anything without first
checking with your loan officer.
Bottom Line
You want your home purchase to go as smoothly as possible. Before
you make any large purchases, move your money around, or make
major life changes (such as changing jobs), be sure to consult your
lender first. Keeping everything "stable" during the process will help
make the process easier (and less frustrating) for you.

My Valentine - The Guardian Gladiator
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
What else could we possibly do?” I snapped to
my PILL (partner in love & life) when (like a
broken record) she asked
once again.
Her concern? What can The Vegas Voice
do to help readers (and everyone else)
protect themselves from the “evil & corrupt”
guardianship system?
No need to repeat Rana’s history with
this scandal. It’s now been now 9+ years
that The Vegas Voice began investigating
and uncovering this dirty/destructive “court
approved” rape of seniors’ assets.
My Rana strongly believes that you must,
must, must avoid ever setting foot in
guardianship court. Between the (not broken
but “fixed”) court system and attorneys’ (and
its always the attorneys) insatiable quest for
your money, whatever can be done to avoid this
nightmare has been my Ladylove’s mission.
She has this simplistic belief that our readers should be able to keep
and decide how they should spend their money and assets in their
retirement years. Not the unwanted guardian.
Toward this end, The Vegas Voice has held over 70 guardianship
seminars around the valley. Last month we held four more with over
500 in attendance.
This time Rana came up with the following plan for these
guardianship workshops:
1. Provide all information/help and assist in filling out the form,
AND
2. Provide the guardianship nomination form, AND
3. Provide the required 2 witnesses, AND
4. Provide free notary services to execute the form, AND
5, Have The Vegas Voice mail out all forms to the Nevada Secretary
of State to place in its “lockbox.”
“Anything else?” I sarcastically asked. “Oh, yes” she quickly replied.
“Make sure we have enough pens for everyone.”
With the wonderful help and assistance of Eleanor Prior of Wet
Ink Mobile Notary and working with the Nevada Notary Public
Loan Signing Success Network Facebook Group, we had additional
volunteer notaries to make sure that everything could be completed as
quickly as possible.
As for my feelings toward the new president of The Vegas Voice, despite
her obsession to help all seniors avoid this guardianship cesspool, and
notwithstanding my reservations of her offering 24/7 assistance, I
nevertheless admire her passion and fierce determination to make the
world (or at least Nevada) a better place.
I was awe-struck by these qualities when I first met her eleven years
ago, and working and living with her hasn’t changed my opinion one
bit. It merely confirmed them.
And while many people deserve credit for their roles in exposing and
reforming the guardianship scandal, can anyone claim that Rana was
not on the front lines? To say that I am and remain terribly proud of
what she has accomplished would be an understatement.
Her fierce, non-stop drive is remarkable and
while there have been times (like before my
morning coffee or while watching the football
games) that my guardianship concerns are
“somewhat” less than Rana’s, I marvel at her
ability to never give up.
I never imagined that I would spend my
evenings and share “pillow-talk” discussing
Nevada Revised Statute 159.059(5)(a) or
coming up with a new strategy to make sure
that everyone fills out the guardianship
nomination form. Who knew that I would be
sleeping with the Guardian Gladiator?
Anyway after these last seminars, she’s still
thinking of ways to make the process even
easier. No doubt, she’ll come up with another
plan to discuss when we go out to dinner
And when she explains and elaborates (in
infinite detail) her latest guardianship plans, I’ll wonder how I’m so
lucky to have her as my forever Valentine.
I
’m sure if men are reading this, you’ll make
faces and perhaps be mildly annoyed. Just
remember you have gazillions of observations
about us - so choose your battles wisely.
The senior boyfriend brings some minor challenges that you either
accept or reject depending on how the columns add up.
Chances are you’ve both had full lives before and most of your daily
routines are pretty much set. The idea of adjusting to habits, perspectives
and annoying quirks has never been a consideration before.
Now he takes over that special chair in the living room, plays with
his phone while you’re watching TV and hates his hearing aids so
the sound is up
to levels that
break glass. As
you adjust and
actually get used
to it, the dogs
hide to get away
from the noise.
Bedtime never
seems to be
in sync but he
lays there like a
at the ceiling
while you fall
asleep instantly.
up because the
dog announces
she’s ready for
breakfast at
7: 00 am.
He stays in
bed. Poor guy didn’t get much sleep so you leave him alone. It’s a good
time to watch your girly shows without hearing big sighs of frustration.
Mealtimes are an enormous challenge. When I’m alone I take some
stupid combination of whatever is there and make something out of it.
But when he’s here, I feel I have to prepare a balanced meal and
demonstrate skills as a homemaker. The best way to avoid that is to
suggest we go out. That works most of the time.
Let’s talk about “droppings” for a bit. Those are clothes, shoes,
napkins, gadgets from Amazon and let’s not forget papers! There are
important papers all over the place but heaven forbid I put them in one
place. Organized chaos is his specialty.
Bodily noises come into play at our age. Enough said.
I could go on but everything is new again and I really love it and
him. The adjustments are many so we keep laughing and life is good.
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Q
: How do retired executives in Sun City spend
most afternoons?
A: Power napping.
Q: As people age, do they sleep more soundly?
A: Yes, but usually in the afternoon
Q: What does an “afternoon delight” mean to a Sun City resident?
A: A nap after lunch.
Q: What do the following have in common for Sun City residents: an
opera, a neighbor’s slideshow, and the Tunnel of Love?
A: They are all nap opportunities.
And BTW: Why is it that the person who snores is always the first
to fall asleep?
*It’s All About Me
1. I still have everything I had 20 years ago…only it’s all a little bit
lower.
2. I joined a health club last month, spent about $400. Haven’t lost
a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
3. I get up each morning and pick up the LV Review Journal and
read the obituaries. If my name isn’t there, then I know I’m not dead. I
eat a good breakfast and go back to bed.
4. Every time I cough, sputter, or sneeze, my radiator leaks and my
exhaust backfires.
* About Those Forever Marriages
1. Jim was asked the secret of his long marriage to Edna. He explained
that they take the time to go to a restaurant two times a week. It always
includes a candlelight dinner, soft music, and dancing. Edna goes on
Tuesdays; Jim on Fridays.
2. You know you’re getting old when your wife gives up sex for Lent,
and you don’t realize it until the Fourth of July.
And Finally: When do you know it’s time to buy a hearing aid?
When the burglar alarm goes off and you check to see who is ringing
the doorbell.

Remember Him?
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
thought I’d write this month about a wonderful
I actor and friend by the name of Michael
Dante.
Now you might not recognize him by name,
but if you watched any of the TV shows (mostly
from the 50s and 60s) you would definitely
remember him. He was on just about every TV
show there was!
If you’re a “Trekkie“ then you will certainly
remember him from an episode of Star Trek
called “Friday’s Child.” Another one that
he is remembered for is his starring role in
1975 where he played the title role as the
legendary Blackhawk Chief in a movie called
“Winterhawk.”
Some of the other shows he was in that you
might remember are Cheyenne, Perry Mason,
Bonanza, The Six Million Dollar Man, Death
Valley Days, Daniel Boone, The Big Valley,
Maverick and many, many more.
He also had a recurring role in the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”
The list goes on and on. Michael was also a radio talk show host, and
he also has a wonderful book out called “From Hollywood to Michael
Dante Way “ (which I highly recommend) and is available on Amazon.
At one time he was under contract to MGM, Warner Bros. and 20 th
Century Fox.
Michael is now 92 years old, looks wonderful, and is still active doing
autograph shows, book signings and appearances. I was lucky to see
him recently at The Star Trek convention here
in Las Vegas .
I’ve known Michael and his lovely wife Mary
Jane for several years and I adore them both.
The one thing that I particularly love about
him is that he is always so pleasant and is the
epitome of a gentleman. He is soft spoken, kind,
gentle and warm and always has a smile on his
face.
Oh, and did I mention that at one time he was
a professional baseball player? He played right
after High School for the Boston Braves - that
is until the acting bug bit him and lucky for us
that it did!
Until next time, remember to stay close to
anything that makes you happy.
A Shot in the Dark!
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
We’re now one month into hanging a new
year on the line.
The time-honored
tradition of New Year’s resolutions is in
full force. Did you make any? How are they
going?
Every January I sit and ponder, then begin
to write. What are my goals? What do I need
to improve?
Easy to make the list, hard to struggle
through it! Looking in my rearview mirror,
I don’t believe I’ve ever gotten through a
whole year with all, or even most, of those
good intentions accomplished.
I’ve realized that resolutions aren’t my
thing. That said, this year my list consists of
one, and only one resolution
I’m not giving up on myself, but we’re all good at some things and
not very good at others. Apparently, I’m hopeless when it comes to
accomplishing those optimistic little resolves I’ve neatly listed in order
of importance.
Let’s see - I’ve vowed to shed the same twenty pounds…for the last
twenty years! My diet resolutions to eat healthier evaporate when I get
a whiff of freshly baked French bread or spot a batch of scrumptious
chocolate chip cookies!
I’m a goner! I’m serving a healthy kale
and quinoa salad for dinner, and bread
would be delicious with it! And really, how
bad could one (or even two) little crisp
chocolate chip cookies be? The bread and
cookies end up on my dinner tables!
Every year, I promise to improve my
housekeeping skills. By February I’m
pushing the dust motes under the sofa again!
I say I’m gonna hit the gym on a regular
basis, learn a new language, meditate daily.
I cut coupons to save. That lasts a month if
I’m lucky!
No, I’m finally tired of carrying the same
list over and over from year to year. I’ve
stopped writing. No more resolutions!
Oh wait! That’s a resolution, too. Isn’t it? Wonder how that one is going
to work out for me? A shot in the dark again, Ya think?
“New” Showroom for
Tony’s Farewell
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Tony Orlando’s final performance at the South
Point Casino last month was a memorable
event for both the audience and Entertainment Director Michael
Libonati. The longevity of Orlando’s career and the loyalty of recurring
show-goers Adele Tanner and companion Harvey Katz reflect the
impact Orlando has had on his fans.
“It leaves me with a special feeling,” Tanner remarked. “Tony’s show
is very moving,” added Katz, referring to Orlando’s patriotic tributes.
The opening of Orlando’s final 3-nighter represented a milestone for
Libonati. The Showroom reopened after a major project to restore and
refresh.
After the Bronx
Wanderers
counted down to
Michael Libonati surveys refreshed
South Point showroom
midnight New
Year’s Eve, the
showroom closed
for the project.
Wear and tear
had begun to
show.
Libonati
collaborated with
the Showroom’s Production Manager, Jason Lein to craft a plan. “Our
goal was to represent Mr. Gaughan (founder and owner) and what he
has done…we want to make it more presentable…to welcome guests
to our ‘home.’”
The all-inclusive list included the annual re-upholstering of all
booths, a new stage floor, stage screen lighting to extend around the
audience and bar and sanding and refinishing all exposed wood. “The
Showroom takes a beating during the 15 days of NFR (National Finals
Rodeo) with 700-800 attendees daily,” Libonati reflected.
With the closing of NFR in mid-December, the countdown to New
Year’s Eve celebrations begins. Libonati is tasked with the entertainment
in venues throughout the casino, including the Grandview Lounge
and ballrooms. A tireless worker, he commented, “New Year’s Eve is my
adrenalin.”
Libonati, whose career began as a stagehand at MGM and Thomas
and Mack Center while attending UNLV, possesses an old-school
approach. While Las Vegas’ casinos seem to downscale the amenities
that appeal most to locals, Libonati’s crew is focused on increasing
revenue by improving the customer experience.
Long delayed backstage improvements have been made for both
employees and talent, which he believes will help the venue continue
to attract top acts. “We’re trying to create a living room experience for
the performers and office staff,” he said.
For audience members Tanner and Katz, “It all adds up to a positive
experience.”
This is Why
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
amazed and grateful we were when she walked into our event at Sun
City MacDonald Ranch leading a group of five notaries ready to move
February 2024
things along as quickly as possible. And we had even more for our last
two seminars at Sun City Summerlin & Anthem.
Since The Vegas Voice began its mission of getting as many seniors
as possible to take advantage of their right to nominate their own
guardian should one become necessary, more than 5,000 seniors have
filed their form with the Nevada Secretary of State to be placed in the
“lockbox.”
I never get tired of
explaining why these
Guardian Nomination
forms are so crucial to
us seniors.
The question that
always comes up is “I
have a trust, and a
will and I gave my
adult child my power
of attorney. So why
do I need to file this
form?”
The answer is really
quite simple. Should
someone try to place you into an unwanted guardianship (and of
course, no one can stop them from trying) as soon as the papers are
filed with the court, by law, the clerk of the court must contact the
Secretary of State to determine if you have filed a nomination form in
the lockbox.
If you have, the proposed guardian’s request is “out
the door” and denied. The court (and the unsuccessful
lawyers) must accept the person you chose.
Remember, filing the guardianship nomination form with the
Secretary of State lockbox costs you nothing, (except for the notary and
a US postal stamp) and it is the best “peace of mind” you can have to
keep you and your assets safe.
Regarding your Power of Attorney: people are not aware that on
every court order granting guardianship, the judge decrees, “that
any powers of attorney are hereby revoked.” This can be a scary
thing should you end up with a stranger rather than someone you have
chosen as you guardian.
Never forget that once the court grants the guardianship the
“protected person” (formally known as the ward) loses all control of
their assets, including their home, mail, bank funds… everything.
I have received many telephone calls and email questions about
all this and it has become alarming (and quite sad) how many are
about family members who have taken guardianship from a sibling,
or other family member. You can only imagine the stress that causes
within the family unit.
Bottom line: Add a layer of protection I hope you will never need
by signing the darn form and get it to the Secretary of State’s lockbox.
You can download the form from our website: thevegasvoice.net
And if you still have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate
to email me at: RanaTheVegasVoice@aol.com.
Where’s the Scam?
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
The Vegas Voice has been reporting on scams for over 3 years.
Telephone scams, emails scams, just above everything from the
ridiculous (that Nigerian Oil Minister) to the clever but deceitful
“grandma help me” schemes.
But here’s one and despite reaching out to various banks, Metro
and even the FBI, no one seems to offer “how” this scheme can work
or even care.
As evidenced by the photo, The Vegas Voice received (via a USPS
Priority 2-day mail envelope) a bank check. No other information or
explanation was in the envelope.
While thrilled to receive payment, it
slowly occurred to this publisher that I
had no idea who the person was. Rather
than depositing the payment. I decided
to contact “Credit Union West.”
The Credit Union is real. So was the
listed address, logo on the check - even
its bank routing number was correct But
per the employee on the other end of the
telephone, there was no bank account by
that number. The check was a fraud.
The employee offered no explanation,
said there was no need to report it, no need to have a copy for their
records, or even speak to a supervisor. Case closed.
When I checked with two Nevada banks as to “where” the scam
was, one mentioned that I would receive a phone call from the
scammers. They would explain the mistaken payment and since I
already deposited the check, just mail back half the payment via gift
cards and keep the rest as their apology for the confusion.
Naturally when the check bounced, I would be out my gift card
payment sent to them. But to my dismay (and disappointment) no
phone call or email was ever received.
I still don’t know how the bad guys would even know when (or if )
The Vegas Voice deposited the check. Sadly neither the banks, Metro
nor even the FBI wanted to follow up.
The moral of this tale? You cannot trust or rely on anybody to
help you if you fall victim to a scam. You are the first and only line
of defense.
Always remember to think knowing full-well that no one is going
to send you an unsolicited payment of $1,550.00 – especially that
Strength Training: Defying Gravity
your routine can rebuild muscle, enhance balance, and improve
overall endurance.
Wes Winters Delights Fans
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Do you want to relax, enjoy good music, maybe
dance a bit, and certainly laugh too? Then
go see the talented, animated, irrepressible Wes
Winters.
You have ten opportunities per month to
share his joy. I know that he loves what he
does and it shows. The guy is charismatic,
a bit corny sometimes, but just so lovable
because of his enthusiasm which shines
through.
Of course to make it in Vegas, you’ve got
to have more than charisma and good looks
– which he has. You need talent and Wes has
that for sure.
He’s honed his craft since he first sat down
at a piano at the age of six. The piano wouldn’t fit through the door
of the house, so young Wes was in the garage every day with records
playing as he taught himself and mastered the craft.
After years of working in his home state of Kansas, Wes took the leap
of faith which landed him in the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas.
And now, you don’t have to go “Up on the Roof (the Drifters) to enjoy
everything from “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” ( Jerry Lee Lewis) to
“Pretty Woman” (Roy Orbison) or the Johnny Cash classic “Ring of
Fire” and Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to The Moon.”
Or you might be treated to “American in Paris” or “Rhapsody in
Blue” or music from “Phantom of the Opera.”
If you’re thinking that some of these tunes make you feel like
dancing, then great. That’s what a lot of folks do at his shows.
Wes entertains at The Grandview Lounge
at South Point Hotel and Casino on Friday
and Saturday evenings from 6 – 9 pm No
cover. No minimum. And free parking!
If those evenings don’t work for you, then
you’ll find Wes every other Tuesday night at
the newly opened Composers Room at 953
East Sahara in the Old Commercial District.
Free parking there too.
The show begins at 7 pm and you can
order drinks and or food while you enjoy his
charm, personality and talent. Go see Wes. I
know you’ll enjoy.
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Based on the
Broadway musical
adaptation of Alice
Walker’s novel, this film “The Color Purple”
has a very different tone to Spielberg’s 1985
drama.
Because of the songs, the story is now
infused with sunny hopefulness, which
outshines the dark narrative. While the
violence and racism are present, they fade
into the background along with character
sexuality.
“The Color Purple” is an intimate and
stirring work. While the music and drama
don’t mesh perfectly, the songs make the film
feel more like a spiritual event as it explores
themes of sisterhood, love, and forgiveness to
poignant effect.
Director Blitz Bazawule has chosen an outstanding cast of; Taraji
P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Halle
Bailey, and Fantasia Barrino. The dynamic ensemble deeply feels their
experiences, but the film finds its emotional center in the musical
16
The Color Purple
February 2024
numbers.
I found an interview with Oprah Winfrey, in People Magazine, who
starred in this 1985. To quote her, “Gratitude
really is my religion. The character I played,
Sofia, was my breakout performance;
Oscar nominated 1985 classic. It changed
everything for me. It was an opening to my
life in a different way. That movie was a
spiritual grounding for me.”
The movie is lively and fun, without
betraying its subject matter. It’s a reclamation,
but a buoyant rather than a somber one.
It features a gorgeous visual look, strong
cast, and well mounted musical numbers.
One critic says” the movie is magical
entertainment that shimmers like a rainbow”.
I rank “The Color Purple” a “4”, one of the
best year’s films - but you may have heard
this before, “The book was better.” The film is a classic you won’t want
to miss.
The Magic of Books
By: Jane Dow / Mutterings & Musings
Do you have books that you’ve read over and
over again?? Those magical worlds where
we know the outcome, but relish reliving the
characters’ sorrows and joys.
I have three I want to share with you.
I was in the ninth grade when I first met Sydney Carton, the drunken
hero of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities.” Since then, I have reread
the novel at least five times.
Dickens’ verbiage was pretty tricky for a 14 year old, but the background
of the French Revolution coupled with the love triangle between Lucy, her
husband Charles and Sydney Carton sparked a passion in my teenage
mind. I learned the meaning of selfless love.
I walked to the guillotine with Sidney Carton. I came to understand the
motivating power
of oppression in
the French people.
A Tale of
Two Cities truly
changed my
world view and
was the catalyst to
visit France three
times and learn
enough French to
be dangerous.
The second
novel that became
a big part of my
DNA was Harper
Lee’s To Kill a
Mockingbird. The
book planted the seed, but it was the movie and the character of Scout
that affected me so deeply.
My first child Ellen possessed an uncanny resemblance to the little girl
who played Scout. I even kept Ellen’s hair short like Scout’s.
She always wanted long hair like the other girls, but mom kept it short.
Ah, that’s another story.
My third favorite read, more contemporary than the others, is Julia
Child›s autobiography My Life in France. Each time I read it, I inhale
the depiction of her life in France during the 40s and 50, but it is the love
story between her and Paul Child that always moves me.
He is the reason she became Julia Child! She couldn’t boil an egg before
he introduced her to “gastronomy” and the delight of French cuisine.
And NO, Julia Child wasn’t a spy, as wagging tongues often depict her.
Both she and Paul worked for the US State Department, thus the titillating
idea that she must have been a spy. Mon Dieu!
Remembering Dr. King
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
For the second year in a row, I found myself in
the heart of the south and in a significant city
of note on Martin Luther King Day. Last year I
performed in Birmingham, Alabama, and this
year in Mobile.
As we celebrate a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King transformed
the hearts and minds of not all Americans, but many during a time of
tumult, discontent and turmoil. He was more than just a speech about
a dream, for his dream was not just that of a dreamer or a poet but that
of a visionary.
20
February 2024
His speech, that we celebrate every year, was that of a man full of hope
that we all could be connected with a common theme and purpose of
humanity. While, he is most remembered for that bold and uplifting
speech, he was so much more than that.
For most of his life, he passionately preached of an America that
recognized all Americans as children of God in a country that was
created with the sole purpose of blending the colors and spirits from
the globe into one nation of imperfection, and a blessed and glorious
experiment.
My hope is that someday the dreams and sacrifices of Dr. King,
Rosa Parks, and countless others (both known and unknown) will be
realized when the sun comes over the horizon to a beautiful new day.
When we can get on with the business of creating the more perfect
union that our founding fathers spoke of.
I’m eternally optimistic of what we can become when we put aside
what makes us different and embrace what makes us Americans.
Imagine what we could do together by seeking our commonalities first,
rather than last.
What can be achieved by listening to each other, rather than talking
over each other. What could be accomplished if we found love in our
hearts. It doesn’t come with a moment’s goodness, but it comes with
the rest of our lives of being and doing good.
I’m ready for that to happen now. Are you?
Meet Dr. Jonathan Maxham
By: Kyli Thomassen / Guest Column
Finally a doctor who is addressing the broken
healthcare system!
Doctor Jonathan
Maxham, a South Carolina native, graduated from
Kansas City University of Medicine and is an internal
medicine physician who has been practicing since
2009.
He joined the United States Air Force in 2005.
During his military career he was deployed to
Afghanistan and received the Army commendation
medal.
At Nellis AFB, he treated thousands of geriatric
patients and became proficient with management of
weight loss, diagnosing sleep apnea, diabetes, high
blood pressure and overall prevention.
After leaving military service as a Major in 2016,
he continued progression into hospital medicine
and eventually became an extensivist or put simply,
a doctor like it used to be. He follows his patients
through all their walks of wellness; whether it be in a clinic or hospital/
post-acute rehabilitation facilities.
Dr. Maxham is mending Nevada’s broken healthcare system one
patient at a time through his Direct Primary Care (DPC) membership
model. Insurance models presume that each diagnosis can be broken
down to a billable code.
With a DPC model, he is able to offer you excellent care at an
affordable price without the constraints of billing and coding which
takes away from the focus of care: YOU!
Included in his membership are home visits, no wait time, and longer
appointment times. You can also call/ text his cell and receive same day
Dr. Jonathan Maxham
Provided Content
or next day appointments as well as remote care while traveling.
Say goodbye to crowded waiting rooms, rushed visits with your
doctor, insurance hassles and surprise fees and list of questions you
never had time to ask.
How does DPC differ from Concierge Medicine?
Where concierge medicine emphasizes exclusivity
with higher annual fees, Dr. Maxham focuses on
affordability, accessibility and a direct patientdoctor
relationship with a lower monthly fee to serve
everyone.
Dr. Maxham’s mission is to bring back the essence
of genuine care and compassion, where patients
feel heard, understood and nurtured through their
healthcare journey. His vision is to revolutionize
healthcare by embracing traditional medical
wisdom while incorporating modern advancements,
ensuring that every patient receives the highest
quality of care with a personal touch.
He believes not to let insurance define your care for
it will define your grave and likes to think of himself
as “old school” with new tricks
I
’ve often asked
myself, what is
considered resort
casual? On a recent
trip to Bermuda, I found myself in a
quandary.
Thinking I knew how to pack as a
seasoned fashion consultant, this should
have taken no thought at all. Instead, I
found myself overwhelmed with what to
wear for the hotel New Year’s Eve dinner
party. The instructions said Black Tie
optional for men and for women dressy
resort casual.
For many women (and men) the word
resort casual can have many meanings.
The true definition of dressy resort casual
is collared shirts and dress shoes for men,
and cocktail dresses or dressy separates for
women.
Looking into this further I discovered that resort casual can also
mean sundresses for women as you’ll find in the Hawaiian Islands
and in Bermuda, naturally the men are allowed to wear the famous
They say there is no such thing as too much of
a good thing, but when it comes to cosmetic
procedures, is that true?
I recently went
to a reunion. All old friends, both in
age and the number of years we had all
been friends.
Everyone looked terrific. There were
fun conversations, mostly about family,
pets, aging, illness, and lots of talk of
old times.
As I came away, there was one
person I kept thinking about. This was
a beautiful woman; she was always
beautiful. As a young girl, she had a
natural beauty and pretty smile.
As many of us do, she looked to hold off the signs of aging and
honestly did a good job. Although she didn’t look much younger than
the group as a whole, she didn’t have any of the telltale signs, like
wrinkles, loose skin, jowls, and some of the other things we expect as
we age.
So what could be wrong? She just didn’t look like the same person.
So much so, that several people commented that they didn’t even
“Bermuda Shorts” not without a collared shirt, tie and jacket though,
to complete the look.
have sufficed.
My suggestion - the next time your
travels take you someplace special and the
dress requirements are Black Tie optional,
if you’re on an island (whether it’s Hawaii,
Bermuda or some other tropical paradise)
for the Ladies take a nice sundress.
For Men, a nice collared shirt and slacks.
Leave your bag vacant for any fun things
you find along the way to bring back.
no one would have asked that, but it was very clear to see she had lots of
filler, very full lips and what appeared to be an altered, square, jaw line.
Her once beautiful eyes had no definition lines from the lashes to her
face and her eyebrows were extreme.
As I talked to her, I felt like I was
talking to a complete stranger. She
looked good but not even close to her
old self. The most important thing of
course, is if she is happy and from all
signs, she appeared to be, what other
people think shouldn’t matter.
But I couldn’t help but wonder if this
was her intent when she started down
this road?
better but still like myself, good, bad or indifferent, I want to recognize
the next.
Soulmates: Myth or Not?
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Science hasn’t proved or disproved the existence
of soulmates. Instead, people either believe in
having a soulmate or not.
Some surveys claim that most Americans believe
that soulmates are real. Their belief suggests
that there is only one person on the planet that
completes you and that recognizing them will be
instantaneous.
But what if they’re wrong? Could this be the
reason why, as the Pew Research Center reports,
we’re seeing a record number of unmarried
Americans?
The soulmate concept is subjective and can vary
from person-to-person, depending on the different
Ancient Soulmate Mythology from which their cultural belief systems
stem. While some people believe there’s only one soulmate, others
believe there may be multiple potential soulmates for each individual
based on timing and physical location.
In actuality, soulmate relationships are more challenging than
a regular boy-meets-girl love story. Debbie Solaris, Akashic Reader,
explains, “We are connected with our soulmates, twin flames, etc. by
Karma. Our souls’ contracts exist to help us go through experiences
and our life’s ascension together, lifetime after lifetime.”
Sometimes, that growth can happen quickly. When we come together,
if our consciousness level conflicts with or is unwilling to comply with
our Soul’s higher purpose, it results in unfulfilled or detrimental
relationships.
Traditionally, most people associate soulmates with romance.
However, we encounter seven types of soulmates in
our lifetime who share various amounts of time
in multiple relationships, incarnations, locations,
etc.
The seven known soulmate categories are:
1. Friend; most comfortable.
2. Teacher imparts lessons.
3. Companion; more intimate.
4. Karmic; trouble.
5. Twin/Flame: reuniting souls born together.
6. New Soul Connections; new.
7. Soul Family: most important, part of your soul group.
To summarize Plato, “True love is not discovered suddenly at
first sight, but rather, it’s the product of immense work, constant
attention, sacrifice, and problems more bearable. If soulmates
exist, they’re formed from a lifetime partnership of shared dealings
with common duties, enduring pain and knowing joy.”
Something Quite
Extraordinary
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Regardless of what side of the climate change
argument you fall on (fact or fantasy) one
thing is certain - alternative forms of technologies that are carbon
neutral or leave less of a carbon footprint compared to oil are escalating
at an enormous pace.
Among them are electric vehicles (EV’s), hybrid EV’s, renewable
natural gas, biodiesel, propane, solar, hydrogen, even carbon capture
systems and then, wait for it…there is geothermal energy. Northern
Nevada has a vast reservoir of this highly effective and environmentally
friendly energy source.
What this technology does is capture the heat generated by drilling
into the earth’s crust releasing an enormous amount of energy. This
is converted into steam that in turn drives turbines which creates
electricity. The electricity is used to heat homes.
But what is most intriguing is a story I read that is so incredible I just
had to bring it to your attention. Iceland has developed a project and
technology that can drill directly into an active volcano’s magma and
extract virtually limitless geothermal from that magma.
This project is called Krafla Magma Testbed. Geothermal energy is
currently used to heat 70% of Icelandic homes.
If this revolutionary technology proves viable, it will fuel 100% of
those homes. The implication for more worldwide use is staggering.
The problem is, of course, what ancillary negative and unintended
side effects could occur? After all, messing with mother nature’s
natural functions may cause irreparable harm. Proceeding cautiously
is a must.
Another key point related to the climate change issue is the fact that
innovative technologies have exploded at such an exponential rate that
it staggers the imagination. And that is a very good thing!
For, even if climate change is a fantasy, these new technologies
are creating new and sustainable educational and more importantly
business models.
We should never discourage innovative thinking by couching it into
“Climate Change Farcical” thinking! Even if those who embrace that
line of thinking are right, we all still benefit!
Operation “Jerk Around”
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Believe me when I say that the VA does not tell
you the whole story when it comes to knowing
what services you will get - and what services you
won’t. Sadly, vets have to be self-styled sleuths to know what medical
care they are entitled to and according to one’s disability rating, what
expenses, if any, they are facing.
If you’re rated 100% disabled, it is absolutely free with no copayments
whatsoever. This lack of communication on the Veterans
Affairs is almost like they want to keep vets in the dark.
It’s ridiculous
to say the least.
Someone needs
to let them
know that a bit
of education
and clear
understanding
goes a long way,
and veterans
deserve all they
can get.
I have personal
experience with
this nonsense,
and I’ll keep it brief. I had a cardiac event while visiting a developing
country.
I thought that since I always got my healthcare at no cost (according
to my service-connected disability rating) that I would be covered no
matter where I am. Wrong.
Since my heart issues were not (at the time) part of my serviceconnected
rating, I was not covered. I had to fit the bill on my own.
Luckily in China at the time, the cost was a fraction of what it would
cost in the U.S. I didn’t have to spend the grandkid’s socks to cover the
bill.
However, here’s the crazy part: Had I had the heart attack in the U.S.,
it would have been covered completely.
Does that make any sense? Of course not.
Let this be a heads up to 100% veterans. Be prepared to handle your
own healthcare expenses abroad if your ailment is not part of your
service-connected rating. Work your due diligence before traipsing off
into the wild blue.
I found out that by registering my service-connected disabilities,
including ischemic heart disease (secondary to Agent Orange
exposure), with the VA Foreign Medical Program, I would have been
covered anywhere in the world. Simple thing, but who knows about
these things?
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.

February is “heart month.” What are you doing
to protect your heart? Are you exercising and
having a healthy diet?
Here are some easy cardio exercises to
help strengthen your heart:
MARCH & TAP: Perform the move for
30 seconds. March in place, lifting your
knees as high as you comfortable can. Add
single knee taps.
As your left leg comes up, tap it with your
right hand. As your right leg comes up, tap
it with your left hand. Continue alternating.
When you have the movement down, try
a double knee tap on each leg and then a
triple knee tap on each leg. Return to single
knee taps and repeat the tapping cycle.
CROSSOVER TOE TAP: Perform the move for 1 minute. Stand tall
with your feet hip-width apart.
Step your right foot forward, crossing it in front of your body and
tapping the floor.
Return to starting position and step your left foot forward, crossing
Heart Month
Senior Exercise?
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
For the past eight years, I have been going to
a senior gym for exercise. Yes, I know….my
friends consider me
more as a Sloth than
Ms. Muscle Universe.
I do however want to walk into my nineties,
not be rolled in - if the Gods see fit. So, I will
continue to go to the gym.
This brings me to the contents of this
article.
At the gym I, notice a very big exercise
difference between the men and women. First
of all, the difference in clothing.
Most men wear ragged shorts and a tee
shirt left over from their fraternity days. Some wear bicycle shorts that
should have been washed with kryptonite weeks ago.
The women, on the other hand, wear coordinating exercise outfits
or at least tasteful shorts or pants and a matching top. The second
difference is in the exercise itself.
Most men will get on the stationary bicycle, elliptical or treadmill
and go “full bore” while sweating profusely and yelling “Hello” at their
friend who walks by. The women pick a good pace that does not have
them looking like they are about to have a coronary and gives them
enough breath to chat to their friends.
February 2024
it in front of your body and tapping the floor. Continue alternating,
moving your arms as you like.
SKATER TAP: Perform the move for 1 minute. Stand tall with your
feet hip-width apart. Step your right foot back, crossing it behind your
body and tapping the floor.
Return to starting position and step your
left foot back, crossing it behind your body
and tapping the floor. Continue alternating,
moving your arms as you like.
When you have the movement down, try
hand claps as you move side-to-side. Begin
with a single clap as you step to the left, then
double clap as you step to the right, and
then triple clap as you step again. Repeat
clapping cycle.
2024 is a new year. Take care of yourself -
in particular your heart.
BE GRATEFUL - for whatever you have, not what you don’t have.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
Mary Richard is a long term supporter of senior fitness. She
teaches Zumba, toning and dance classes throughout the Las
Vegas Valley.
The Press Fixed Bar (weight lifting bar) and similar weight lifting
machines are really interesting. I rarely see a woman use these
machines. I don’t know why.
Maybe it is because they would have to really flex their mammaries
and no one wants an over stretched boob.
What is really curious, is that these men
make these loud, grunting sounds while they
lift the bar or weight.
They also only lift the weights two or three
times, drop the weight and then walk around
the machine several times before returning.
One man was grunting so loudly that I asked
him why was he doing the exercise when,
obviously, he was in tremendous pain?
He said he wanted to tear the muscle in
order for it to grow bigger! What?
When women use Free Motion Machines (sit on bench and pull on
handles attached to the machine), they repeat an exercise amount
(100 pulls each arm) until they are finished.
I notice men will pull the handles maybe 20 times…then rise off the
bench….walk around….get back on the bench and start again.
I always thought of exercise as a necessary chore. Now, I believe it is
a window into human behavior.
Dealing With Kidney Disease
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Many older individuals suffer from kidney
disease. In order to understanding kidney
disease, you must first understand how the kidneys
work.
Located in the back of the body near the bottom of the ribcage, the
function of the kidneys is to filter and clean the blood. The functional
unit of the kidneys which does the filtering and cleaning of the blood
is called a nephron. You have approximately 1.1 million nephrons in
each of your two kidneys.
Where cleaning the blood may sound simple, it is a very complex
process. All of the body’s cells produce wastes through their metabolic
activity. These wastes are carried from cells via the blood to the kidneys.
Almond Milk?
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
I
’m sure Aunt Hattie never milked an almond
When I was little, my brothers and I took
summer train trips to Aunt Hattie’s farm in South
Dakota. Based on my recollection, farming in South Dakota during the
1950s was rough.
Normally, folks in that neck of the woods made their living as dirt
farmers. During drought they transitioned to dust farmers. And in a
year with heavy rainfall, the conditions forced them to switch to mud
farmers.
Okay, I’m just trying to be funny which is something you would
never do around Aunt Hattie.
In addition, Hattie had a head twitch which added to her “You best
not mess with me” appearance.
The blood also carries many other structures and molecules
necessary for your life including red blood cells, white blood cells,
transport proteins, vitamins, minerals, etc. These necessary structures
in the blood must be retained while at the same time all of the wastes
must be expelled.
On average the kidneys filter about 37 gallons of blood per day or
about 90 ml/minute.
If the kidneys begin to malfunction, the wastes do not get cleared as
efficiently and build up in the blood. For lack of a simpler way to put
it, over time the cells of the body become poisoned and damaged by the
body’s own excess wastes.
Kidney disease and the damage it does to the body does not usually
happen all at once but rather a process that worsens in stages over time.
Where a healthy rate of filtration is considered to be 90 ml/minute or
greater, mild kidney disease (stage 2) filters only 60 – 89 ml/minute.
Moderate kidney disease (Stage 3) filters 30 – 59 ml/ minute and severe
kidney disease only filters 15 – 29 ml of blood per minute.
Sadly, damage to the kidneys is not reparable. Once the damage is
too extreme, the patient must be put on dialysis for the rest of their life.
February 2024
On Sundays, Hattie would grab a chicken out of the coop, take it to
the tree stump, and chop off its head with her axe. Yup, I guarantee
you, we boys were impressed.
I started thinking about this recently when I noticed things like
miso, tofu, and plant-based meats showing up in the frig.
Even more of a surprise occurred the following week when a carton
of almond milk appeared. I do not understand this at all. How in the
heck do you get milk from an almond?
As time went by, I found myself eating things for dinner that were
called hot dogs, chicken or meatballs but actually contained no dog,
chicken, nor meat. And they were good.
My wife has focused on a vegetarian diet for the two of us over the
years. Lately, however, after lots of research, she is a committed vegan.
And, of course, since I can barely fix a can of soup without messing
it up, I am now a victim of what you might call “cooking collateral
damage.”
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but when one’s
choices are “eat this or make your own,” this old dog is willing to try
anything. And I have to say that so far some of these new eating tricks
my wife is teaching me are surprisingly good.
I imagine Aunt Hattie would scoff at the very idea of reducing meat
consumption, but I’ve no doubt her chickens would be pretty clucking
happy.
The Death of the Auto Show
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Hard to believe that 124 years ago, the first
automobile show started in New York at
Madison Square
Garden. A host of
manufacturers displayed 160 vehicles,
showcasing steam, electric and gas-powered
models.
The first show drew about 48,000 visitors,
who paid $.50 to attend. Auto shows hit their
stride in the ’50s and ’60s, with introductions
of now well-known models like Corvette and
Mustang.
But times change, and the auto show is
dying for a variety of reasons.
For decades, auto show season started in
September when the new models arrived. The
biggest auto shows nationwide have been Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago
and New York.
As an automotive journalist, my schedule for decades consisted of LA
in November, Detroit in January, Chicago in February, and New York in
April. Many cities host their own smaller shows, with participation from
local dealers rather than big manufacturers.
The auto show was always fun for the media. Big displays, Vegas-style
introductions, and a chance to see it all in one place.
Manufacturers, however, are always looking to stand apart from
the rest, and began to introduce new products at individual media
events so they wouldn’t have to share the limelight. In addition, as
manufacturing costs rose, automakers were looking to save wherever
they could.
Pie-in-the-sky concept vehicles that were
never going to be built went on the chopping
block. Concept vehicles you see today are
mainly precursors to new models.
Plus the cost of building giant displays at
shows was running into the millions, and
although the auto shows brought in lots
of people, the return on investment wasn’t
enough to keep justifying the costs.
Media days at auto shows used to run
three days; now it’s down to one. The list of
manufacturers that attend has dwindled
down to almost nothing. Mercedes-Benz,
BMW, Lincoln, and more have all bowed out.
Even Stellantis, which makes Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler products,
won’t be there. We can see and buy new cars online now - just another
reason why the auto shows soon will be gone completely.
BJ Killeen has been an automotive journalist for over 30 years.
The Month of Love!
By: Bruce Ewing / Having Faith
Valentine’s Day decorations and “choco-gifts”
began to appear in stores in late December
and the pressure continues to build to mid-
February, as we try to figure out what we will do for that “special one.”
Even more pressure seems to be put on single people during this
month. Some love February 14th! Some dread it.
Valentines Day is named for St. Valentine who preached LOVE in the
third century and was martyred on Feb. 14, 269. Before that, there was a
Jewish holiday in existence — The Day Of Love (Tu B’Av) which began
in the late 2nd century, and often occurs in early August.
Jewish or Christian — the center of our faiths is LOVE.
Judaism was the first religion to place love at the heart of everything.
“Love your neighbor.” “Love the stranger.”
Role-playing can bring the zing back to a lack-luster love life,
especially when enhanced with discreetly purchased items acquired
from local love emporiums like Adam & Eve in Las Vegas.
“Seniors have mature attitudes,” Jodie Allen, manager of Adam &
Eve, on 2600 W. Sahara, said. “They open up and ask questions. Many
begin small in their initial purchases, but, as they experiment, they buy
items to fulfill big fantasies.”
Or look to the very center of Judaism. “A life of love — and a love of
life. All the rest is commentary!” (Rabbi Jonathan Sacks)
Christianity often looks to 1 Corinthians 13, where Paul writes, “Love
is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud… It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong… It
always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
I’ve been in a wonderful relationship for more than 25 years but I’m
not one who likes to play into the pressures of the holiday. Instead of
giving in to all the commercialism, I want to try to become a better me
this month.
I want to do my best to love, not just the person with whom I share
my life but all people. I want to do my best to love my neighbor and
the stranger.
I want to be more patient and kind. I want to protect, trust, hope, and
persevere better.
What might our world be like if we spent less time focused on the
holiday, and instead looked to be more kind and loving to all with
whom we come in contact? Let’s try it and see what happens!
Allen said men tend to buy things they feel will enhance a woman’s
pleasure and women buy satin robes, lacy nighties and sexy outfits
from a mischievous schoolgirl, a sensuous secretary, to an his and her
Santa teddy/ Santa briefs set, each red with white trim. There is even
a plus-size nightie with football decals to catch a man’s eye during
football season.
“Senior men purchase variety briefs, more so than younger men,”
Allen said. “They lean toward the decorated ones with leopard spots, or
the one we have in black with a large red heart imprinted on the back.
We have a lot of choices in all shapes, sizes, and colors.”
Some seniors turn to Faithful Fling, a couples’ membership website
that helps users add passion to their marriage with wonder, intrigue,
and adventure achieved through stimulating role-playing scenarios.
According to news platform Elite Daily, roleplaying with a partner
and acting out your sexual fantasies is a strong indicator you feel
emotionally and physically safe in a relationship and trust your partner.
“Scheduling sex is sexy,” she said. “When you plan in advance, your
most powerful sex organ, your brain, has days to anticipate what you’ll
do and how you’ll do it, and the pleasure you’ll receive.”
This month, why not think about dressing up as a Zorro, with a cape
and mask, proving your devotion to a sensuous Elena De la Vega…
Plans for this Month
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
In February, there are numerous activities that
we should do to prepare for the approaching
growing season. And 2024 being a leap year,
affords us an additional day to the four weeks we have to complete
these tasks.
Week 1: Go into your garden and start
cleaning up any “winter debris.” Prune
unwanted and damaged branches, leaves
and stems.
Before actual budding begins, treat trees, if
necessary, with dormant oil spray to kill any
eggs or larvae that may develop into boring
or sucking insects that will attack your trees and bushes in the coming
months.
I recommend neem oil which can be used as both a dormant spray
as well as a foliar spray during the growing seasons.
Next, be proactive and treat your soil with systemic insecticide
to prevent root-eating grubs. Apply directly to the soil surrounding
agave, yucca and flowering plants.
This insecticide is absorbed through the root system and protects
(sort of like a vaccination) against a variety of damaging insects.
Remember, however, not to treat plants that you intend to eat in the
near future.
Week 2: Aerate the soil, check drip systems, and to add mulch where
needed. It’s time to fertilize all succulents, fruit trees and blossoming
bushes.
Treat your roses with a solution of Epsom Salt as well as high
phosphorus plant food to stimulate flowering. Remember however,
that palm trees should not be fertilized until late Spring.
In addition, apply sulfur to your soil to lower pH levels caused by
alkali buildup during the winter. Don’t forget
to plan your visit to the garden nurseries
since the new Spring shipments will be
arriving shortly.
Week 3: By now, leaf and flower budding
will have started. WARNING: Even a brief cold
spell can damage budding and prevent fruit development. Nurseries
should be receiving their new stock so plan to visit and start planting!
Week 4: If you are planning on growing vegetables, this is the time
that nurseries will be receiving palettes of vegetables and tomatoes. If
you are unsure of which varieties do best in our area, call the Master
Gardeners’ Hotline (702/257-555) for advice.
Take Some Genealogy
Classes
By: Craig Smith / Exploring Your Roots
In my January column, I talked about getting
organized with all your genealogy documents.
I’m sure you all made a new year’s resolution to
get organized. That’s great!
Now it is time to improve your genealogical knowledge by taking
classes or attending seminars. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned
researcher, there’s always more to learn and discover.
Here are some general tips to get the most out of your genealogy classes:
Start with Basics: If you’re new to genealogy, begin with the
fundamentals. Learn about vital records, census data, and other primary
sources. Understand the importance of documenting your findings and
building a reliable family tree.
Attend Workshops and Webinars: Many genealogy classes are
offered online through workshops and webinars. There are also many free
classes right here in the Las Vegas valley. Some upcoming opportunities:
Thursday, February 22nd, Noon - 2:00 pm, “Beginning
Genealogy.”
Saturday, February 24th, 10:00 am - Noon, “Locations are
Everything.” Presented by special guest speaker Daniel Horowitz from My
Heritage.
The above classes are hosted by the Clark County Nevada Genealogical
Society and will be held at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley
Pkwy, Henderson, 89012.
On Sunday, February 25th, Daniel Horowitz will present two
additional classes: “When There’s a Will There’s a Way” and “How AI
(Artificial Intelligence) Can Help Genealogists” starting at 1:30 pm. and
2:30 pm respectively.
These two classes will be hosted by the Jewish Genealogy Society of
Southern Nevada and will be conducted at the Las Vegas FamilySearch
Center, 509 S. Ninth Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101.
Remember, genealogy is a journey of discovery, and each piece of
information you uncover adds to the rich tapestry of your family history.
Enjoy the process, and happy researching.
Craig Smith is the President of the Clark County Nevada
Genealogical Society. The Society meets on the third Saturday of
each month at the Paseo Verde Library in Henderson. Craig can
Tricks of the Trade
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
We’ve just returned from a very successful
Mexican Riviera cruise. Over 120 Vegas Voyagers
had a fantastic time and the Discovery Princess is
a wonderful brand new ship.
We liked the ship so much that we are
returning to that vessel March 9 – 16 on a
Coastal California itinerary. And we will be
cruising with the Folk Legacy Trio as we “folk
music” our way along the west coast. There is
still space available if you want to join us, but
time is running out.
As our Vegas Voyagers know, our group is
primarily “Seniors.” Most are vibrant and
very active. We also have a fair number of
participants with mobility issues.
We encourage those with these issues to
bring walkers, wheelchairs or electric scooters
with you. We can accommodate these on the bus and they are very
helpful during the cruise.
Here is a little trick of the trade. If you have
these mobility issues you should seriously
consider bringing along
your walker, wheelchair or
scooter. The cruise line will
not provide these devises for you
on the trip.
And while
there are wheelchairs to assist you on and off the
ship upon embarkation and disembarkation,
it could be a while before porters arrive at our
bus or in the terminal to help in getting you
on the ship.
Remember, close to 3,000 passengers are
boarding the ship (with their luggage), so
passengers with mobility issues can take a
while to embark. And, without your own
mobility equipment on the ship, there will not
be wheelchairs available for the length of the cruise.
Hope this little travel tip helps.
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
When I first heard then Las Vegas Mayor
Oscar Goodman, (himself a former Mob
defense attorney) was
suggesting saving the looming sandstone
downtown post office, by creating a mob
museum in the building, I thought the
suggestion was absurd. Who would visit a
mob museum?
No longer having use for the former post
office and historic courthouse inside, the
federal government sold it to the city for $1
in 2000, with conditions that the building be
restored to its original appearance and be
used for cultural purposes.
Following work on the beautifully wellbuilt
post office, the Mob Museum, officially
the National Museum of Organized Crime
and Law Enforcement opened on February
14, 2012. It marked the saying, “Build it and
they will come,” true.
Opening as a world-class destination in downtown Las Vegas, it is
an interactive tour through true crime events, from the Mob’s birth to
current crime headlines. The Mob Museum is a repository for objects,
records and other items that tells the story of the Mob in America.
Art meets life. If you have seen the movie Casino you saw former mob
38 February 2024
The Mob Museum
attorney and Mayor Oscar Goodman reenacting his role representing
mobsters like Meyer Lansky, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Anthony
Spilotro. Snatches from the movie make up some museum displays.
Another reenactment from the movie is the late Frank Cullotta,
a former mob hitman, killing a fellow
mobster. Cullotta was the real hitman and
after serving time for his crimes, became
an advisor and actor, playing himself in the
movie.
Frank Cullotta entered the Witness
Security Program, which offers gangsters
who turn informant and take the witness
stand a way out of their life of crime, but
picking up and starting over isn’t easy. Many
now qualify for Medicare.
Prior to his death due to Covid, Collotta
become a minor celebrity appearing as
a guest at the Mob Museum and offered
Casino (the movie) tours while reviewing
his former gangster life.
Visiting the basement and the
Underground Speakeasy is a must. During prohibition, speakeasies
faced with the risk of raids, served bourbon in teacups, though lawmen
were seldom fooled.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.

Would you consider dining on a New York City
subway platform during rush hour?
Sound like a terrible idea? Then why do we
frequent restaurants where the noise level exceeds a front row seat at a
Jimi Hendrix rock concert?
Because we have little choice. If you, like millions of others, engage
in what my friend
labelled “recreational
eating,” then what
you make for dinner
is a reservation.
And everyone
wants to sample the
hot new restaurant
in town. So, you call
and are fortunate to
be granted a table
for four by the young
hostess who sounds
like she’s doing you a
favor.
A month later, the
big night arrives. You
step inside and feel like you’ve just been transported onto the runway
of the world’s busiest airport!
Your table isn’t ready, so you wait at the bar. There, the exceptionally
loud sound of people trying to be heard is augmented by pulsating
music more conducive to disco dancing than to dining.
There’s nowhere to stand to avoid the music. Speakers are everywhere!
You feel as if your entire body is being assaulted. Because it is. Sound
is measured in units called decibels (dBs). The higher the dB number,
the louder the sound.
On a New York City subway platform the sound level is approximately
A Not-So-Joyful Noise
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
Genevieve Shines Once Again
February 2024
The fantastic,
beautiful
Genevieve
autographs her
show poster
last month. Her
performance
last month
at Sun City
MacDonald
Ranch can be
summed up
in one word:
Spectacular!
90 db. The sound level in your current situation is at least 85. Average
conversation is about 60dB.
It’s no wonder that the most frequently uttered word in modern
restaurants is “What?”
The hostess finds you just seconds before you enter a noise-induced
stupor. She escorts you to your table, and hands you the menu. You
think about asking if the venue provides ear plugs, but it seems unlikely.
Besides, she probably won’t be able to hear you. The sound at the
table is slightly less
than the bar, but
still risky for noiseinduced
hearing loss.
The waiter appears
and recites the
specials. Twice. Three
times. And you’re still
not sure if the fish of
the day is prepared
with almonds or
artichokes.
You don’t want
to gamble, so you
order from the menu.
Thank goodness
Apple thought to include a flashlight on the iPhone.
Attempting conversation, the four of you lean onto the table,
foreheads almost touching. You fiddle with your hearing aids to try to
drown out the background noise. The one who doesn’t wear hearing
aids wishes she did so that she could remove them.
Straining to be heard, you soon find yourselves competing with the
other diners in yell-talking. The meal is tasty, but you skip dessert. You
long to escape to the soothing lull of street noise.
Why are restaurants so noisy? Clearly, there’s been a shift in aesthetics.
Carpeting and soft seats have been replaced by metal and concrete and
very high ceilings.
Restauranteurs claim that soundproofing has gotten too expensive
for large spaces. Besides, noise equals excitement. Who wants to walk
into a room that is deadly quiet?
I get the latter argument. But surely, there must be some compromise
between eating amidst a herd of lawn mowers or the public library!
So, people, do we give up recreational eating or try to accommodate
to the new normal? One thing we might consider is abandoning yelltalking
and taking classes in lipreading.
Perhaps decide beforehand that we will communicate via texting
and eliminate the risk of laryngitis.
Or, we simply stay home, and hope that one day, the local senior
center will open for dinner.
Just When You Thought You Were Retired
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
How older adults feel about traditional
retirement has changed. Why are so many
choosing to leave their days of leisure behind and
return to work, or work past retirement age?
One big factor is older adults today are
much healthier than past generations and
are living longer. And while that’s wonderful
news, it comes with some concerns: the fear
of outliving one’s retirement income and the
possible need for more financial security.
For many retirees, life after a career is a
commitment to service and volunteering. For
others, it’s taking their hobby and turning it
into a small business.
Then, there are those who simply discover they weren’t ready to retire
and still want to work. If you’re one of these individuals, you’ll need to
figure out what you want to do now that retirement isn’t fulfilling you.
Do you want to work in a role you’ve had before or do something
entirely new?
Before you make any moves, you’ll want to learn about the
perceptions, misconceptions, and discrimination many older adults
face in the workplace - as well as the laws that protect them. How
to navigate new work and social environments using the tools of
emotional intelligence and self-awareness will be key!
This semester at UNLV/OLLI, I’m teaching a class titled, Just When
You Thought You Were Retired. This class is packed with just-addwater
tips, tools, and lots of takeaways for anyone re-entering the job
force.
You’ll learn how to gauge your capacity,
build your confidence, find your new career
niche, or rejuvenate your old one. Also,
you’ll receive information to help turn your
knowledge, experience, expertise and passion
into small business venture.
If you’re interested in my class, please visit:
To be a Jew in America
By: Liz Breier / This & That
want to thank readers who have reached
I out over the last few months. Kind words of
encouragement, solidarity and compassion mean
everything to me.
When you are suffering, it is helpful to know that you are not alone
- that others feel the same pain as you.
I received a couple of
comments that sparked
my desire to respond. To
those who asked, “What
ever happened to the
2-state solution?”
I respond by
respectfully advising
that anyone can read the
history of the region – at
least dating back to 1937
and the many attempts
during the 1990s and 2000s. I contend that there will never be a 2-state
solution in the Middle East because the Arab nations have declared,
unequivocally that they want the region cleansed of Jews.
The cry “from the river to the sea” is the battle cry to cleanse Israel
of all Jews. Of course, no one knows if the intent would go further and
obliterate Jews worldwide, but I suspect that would be next if they had
their way.
I also mentioned in an earlier article that a dear friend expressed
her concern over advertising her Judaism by wearing her Magen
David necklace (Star of David). More recently, a reader reached out to
compliment my American/Israeli flag.
Although he would like to fly one, his wife is concerned that it could
put them in danger of vandalism… or worse. I admit that I too was a
bit leery, but here is the rub. When do Jews get to stop being afraid?
Should the events
of October 7 make us
hide? Should we be
more frightened of being
Jewish than on October
6?
Synagogues and Jewish
schools have beefed up
security. College students
are afraid to go to class.
If not the United
States, then where would
a Jew go to feel proud to wear a Jewish star or fly an Israeli flag? Israel?
We saw what happened there. Jews in Israel are not safe while Hamas
and Hezbollah and their Iranian backers have a say.
A prominent politician’s wife once declared that she had never been
proud of this country until her husband was elected to office. With all
the protest road blockades and torment of Jewish students, I wonder if
she is proud now?
I have always been proud of my country but now I am embarrassed
and ashamed that the world sees, and unfortunately many applaud, the
hostile treatment of Jews in America. Our options are to hide in fear or
walk proudly as Jews.
Yes, we may face consequences, but I would rather suffer the
slings and arrows (literally and figuratively) than hide in an attic or
basement, conceal my identity or be ashamed of my heritage.
Doesn’t every American have that right? Why are Jews not as entitled
to be proud of their religion, their heritage, and the accomplishments
of their people as any other religion or ethnicity?
Everyone has a right to speak their mind, agree or disagree, support
or discourage. Protest if you wish, but for the sake of humanity – let
your neighbors live in peace and not hide in fear.
I am not alone, far greater minds than mine concede. Ben Stein:
“The Sturmabteilung (Storm Division of the Nazi Party) has come
to Main Street. These are evil days. This is exactly how Nazism started,
and they did not have unlimited funds from petro-powers to push them
far down the road.
“Time to stop being the weak victim in history and play another set
of roles. We have been warned.”
To my Israeli brothers and sisters – we are praying every day
