’ve often asked
myself, what is
considered resort
casual? On a recent
trip to Bermuda, I found myself in a
quandary.
Thinking I knew how to pack as a
seasoned fashion consultant, this should
have taken no thought at all. Instead, I
found myself overwhelmed with what to
wear for the hotel New Year’s Eve dinner
party. The instructions said Black Tie
optional for men and for women dressy
resort casual.
For many women (and men) the word
resort casual can have many meanings.
The true definition of dressy resort casual
is collared shirts and dress shoes for men,
and cocktail dresses or dressy separates for
women.
Looking into this further I discovered that resort casual can also
mean sundresses for women as you’ll find in the Hawaiian Islands
and in Bermuda, naturally the men are allowed to wear the famous
They say there is no such thing as too much of
a good thing, but when it comes to cosmetic
procedures, is that true?
I recently went
to a reunion. All old friends, both in
age and the number of years we had all
been friends.
Everyone looked terrific. There were
fun conversations, mostly about family,
pets, aging, illness, and lots of talk of
old times.
As I came away, there was one
person I kept thinking about. This was
a beautiful woman; she was always
beautiful. As a young girl, she had a
natural beauty and pretty smile.
As many of us do, she looked to hold off the signs of aging and
honestly did a good job. Although she didn’t look much younger than
the group as a whole, she didn’t have any of the telltale signs, like
wrinkles, loose skin, jowls, and some of the other things we expect as
we age.
So what could be wrong? She just didn’t look like the same person.
So much so, that several people commented that they didn’t even

“Bermuda Shorts” not without a collared shirt, tie and jacket though,
to complete the look.
My initial thought was I’ll pack 3 dressy
outfits (completely unnecessary) My black
velvet jumpsuit that I ended up wearing,
(along with a pair of dressy shoes) would
have sufficed.
My suggestion - the next time your
travels take you someplace special and the
dress requirements are Black Tie optional,
if you’re on an island (whether it’s Hawaii,
Bermuda or some other tropical paradise)
for the Ladies take a nice sundress.
For Men, a nice collared shirt and slacks.
Leave your bag vacant for any fun things
you find along the way to bring back.

recognize her. It’s hard to know the full scope of what she had done as
no one would have asked that, but it was very clear to see she had lots of
filler, very full lips and what appeared to be an altered, square, jaw line.
Her once beautiful eyes had no definition lines from the lashes to her
face and her eyebrows were extreme.
As I talked to her, I felt like I was
talking to a complete stranger. She
looked good but not even close to her
old self. The most important thing of
course, is if she is happy and from all
signs, she appeared to be, what other
people think shouldn’t matter.
But I couldn’t help but wonder if this
was her intent when she started down
this road?
I’ve always thought the goal with
cosmetic procedures would be to look
better but still like myself, good, bad or indifferent, I want to recognize
the person in the mirror. Often, once you get one thing done it leads to
the next.
