8 Important Documents You Should
NEVER Throw Away!
Grab your glasses and always pay attention to what you are throwing in the
trash! It's easy to accidentally toss something important that was mixed in with
unneeded papers. Being patient when you are decluttering is always wise -
separate the good from the bad and try to keep your papers organized so you
always have access to your important documents when you need them in the
future. There may be a time when you need to find those documents quickly,
such as when you apply for a loan, meet with your estate planning attorney, or if
you need to leave your home in a hurry because of an emergency.
1. Personal Papers : Birth certificates, military records, social security cards,
marriage licenses, ID cards, divorce decrees, and your passport would be on this
list.
2. Bank Account Records : Keep these as long as possible! Cancelled checks and
receipts should be kept until you receive and reconcile your statements, and
ones that are proof of big purchases (or are tax related) should be kept long
term.
3. Investment Records : Investment related papers such as trade confirmations or
statements should be kept at least 6 years after investing or longer. They are
also proof of what your cost basis is so that you can keep track of capital gains
and losses.
4. Credit Card Statements and Documents : Keep your receipts to reconcile with
your statement. Keep any receipts for items you might want to return (or might
need for warranty purposes, tax purposes, etc).
5. Loan Records : All loan records should be kept in a safe place. This includes
everything from mortgages to car loans. Retaining proof that you have paid off a
loan can be important even years down the road (as there could be a problem
with the records of the creditor - you will want to keep your proof that you paid
them.)
6. Rental Agreements : Keep your rental agreement for at least 6 years after the
end of the lease.
7. Insurance Policies & Related Documents : Health insurance policies can be
discarded once the coverage ends, but all other insurance documents should be
kept for at least 6 years after the policy is canceled (just in case anything
unexpected comes up.)
8. Tax Returns & Related Documents : Anything related to your tax returns should
be kept for at least 6 years because the IRS can audit you that far back (not just 3
years .. and in some special cases up to 10) - and if you don't have your
supporting documents readily available they will likely charge penalties.
Be careful when you do perge certain documents and properly shred them to
help prevent identity theft. When in doubt, keep a digital copy of the item before
destroying it just in case you end up needing it unexpectedly.

A Day to Always Remember
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
I’m not big into history.” That’s the excuse
they gave in response to our proposal to
commemorate the 80 th anniversary of D-Day.
Their statements and their reasons
were nothing short of insulting.
For those collecting Social
Security, I have no doubt that June
6, 1944 is one that resonates with
them. As a reminder, that’s the
date that American, Canadian and
British forces stormed the beaches
of Normandy, France. It marked
a turning point; the beginning
of the end to Hitler and Nazi
Germany.
A total of 4,414 Allied troops were
killed that day, including 2,501
Americans. More than 5,000 were
wounded. In the ensuing Battle
of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces
were killed and 153,000 were
wounded.
Sadly, I could not find anyone
under the age of 50 who has a clue
as to what occurred that day. So
many men lost their lives on that
French coast designated as Utah,
Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
And what about their families’
sorrow and heart-break?
Regardless of your religious
or political beliefs, there should always be a debt of gratitude and
remembrance to those brave, patriotic and heroic boys.
The fact that the majority of the American public know little (if
anything) about that day is a national disgrace. That such history
apparently has no relevance to those designated as Millenniums and
Generation Zs is shameful.
Here’s what worse: Rana and I, on behalf of The Vegas Voice wanted
to do something (anything!) to commemorate this 80 th anniversary.
We even stated that we were willing to pay for it out of our own pockets
(we would just take it from our children’s inheritance, we joked) only
to be turned down (or even worse, ignored). It saddens and angers us
to no end.
One agency advised that it could not do anything since it required at
least six months of preparation. Our response that we can do it with 6
days’ notice was met with disbelief. And yes, I resent their arrogance…
and incompetence.
As my Rana outlined in her column (page 6) visiting such hallowed
ground and standing where so many Americans gave their lives for our
county is awe-inspiring. One cannot walk along the burial grounds
and not be moved.
So, as Memorial Day and the 80 th anniversary approaches, perhaps…
just maybe… Nevadans and all Americans can take a few minutes out
of their 3-day weekend, hold off on that bar-b-que, put down that beer
and remember and give thanks to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice
for our country.
* Last month Jared Shafer
died. He served as Clark County
Public Administrator for nearly
25 years and was the “first private
guardian.”
His actions in crafting the
original guardianship laws
(eventually rescinded and
reformed) speak for themselves.
Shafer also served as Exhibit
A of all that was evil with the
guardianship system when
he spoke before the Nevada
Guardianship Commission (of
which Rana was a member) at its
initial meeting.
He told the Commission that
it wasn’t the private guardians
but solely family members that
were stealing and ripping-off
those caught in the guardianship
scandal. Rana and I will never
forget the stunned and outraged
looks by the public. Even the
guardianship lawyers and judges
could not mask their disbelief and
embarrassment.
I was brought up with the admonishment that one “should not talk
ill of the dead.” Enough said.
What Do
You Think?
Do you agree with our
columnists? Did anyone get
you angry, make you think
or simply put a smile on
your face? Please tell us by
forwarding your comments,
thoughts or suggestions
June 6, 1944
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
Last August, Publisher Dan and I vacationed
in Europe. We made a special effort to visit
Normandy.
Ironically, my family came
to the United States in 1953,
transplants from England, and
yet, in spite of this French coast
being just across the English
Channel I had never been to
Normandy.
It was a place I had longed
to visit and pay my respects;
especially since June 6th makes
the 80 th anniversary of “D-Day,”
- the day the Allies stormed the
continent.
Whenever thinking about
what happened on “D-Day”
(and especially when Dan and
I visited this historic site) I
remembered how many times my dad would say “Thank God for the
Yanks.”
My father, who rarely spoke of his days in the “Combined Operations”
of the British army, (England’s version of the US Special forces) refused
to talk about “D-Day.” His reasoning was that he lost too many friends
that day.
As I strolled around the many monuments on that beach, my
emotions went from pride in
honoring the countries and
soldiers who participated in
such a world-changing battle,
to sadness and anger over the
thousands of men killed that day.
The museum at the site of the
cemetery honors the Allied forces
was nothing short of fascinating
and awe-inspiring. Their various
films highlights what happened
that fateful day 80 years ago.
There were likewise numerous
exhibits and photographs of
the courage, determination
and sadly, carnage, death and
destruction of men (some just boys) on that Normandy beach.
I wished my dad was with me when I walked along the coast. I
pictured my dad bursting with pride where his fellow “Brits and Yanks”
turned the tide against Nazi Germany and saved the world.
While flags of the Allied nations that participated blew steadily in the
breeze of the sea air, I realized just how fortunate I am living in this
great country. Yes, there are a lot of problems and divisions in America,
but seeing those graves makes one realize how we owe a never-ending
debt of gratitude to those brave, courageous soldiers.
Thousands of men died on these beaches and as the 80 th anniversary
approaches, I hope everyone reading this takes a moment to remember
and offer a prayer of thanks to these brave men.
Where Did We Get Such Men?
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
There are so many good men and women to
remember on this 2024 Memorial Day that
most of us just bow our heads and silently focus
on the thousands that gave their all while defending America in the
Armed Forces. However, this Memorial Day, I’ve one dear friend in
mind, and would like to honor him by sharing a bit of his story.
Commander William “Country” Landreth, USN (ret.), passed away
at 90 years old on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012. The cause of his death
was the lingering effects of a WWII injury.
Bill grew up in Nebraska and joined the Navy as an officer. He went
on to pilot an F4U Corsair with fighter squadron VF-17, the Jolly Rogers,
“Country”, as his
squadron mates dubbed
him, was credited with
3 kills and 1 assist while
his squadron destroyed
154 planes in 76 days
of combat in the South
Pacific. No bomber
escorted by VF-17 was
lost to enemy aircraft,
and no ship was ever
hit by a bomb or aerial
torpedo. They were at
the top of their game.
In March 1945,
on his first day of combat with a different squadron, fighter/bomber
squadron VBF-10, Bill was launched from the carrier Intrepid and
never returned. His plane went down after flying through the explosion
caused by his own low-level strafing of a camouflaged ammunition
dump.
After 3 days in a raft in freezing rain with a broken back, he was
captured and spent the last 6 months before liberation as a POW in
Ofuna, Japan.
Country’s Navy career decorations include the Distinguished Flying
Cross with Gold Star; Air Medal with 4 Gold Stars; Purple Heart; Navy
Unit Commendation; Prisoner of War Medal; and numerous theater
ribbons.
I got to know Bill when I became the National Director of a veteransfor-veterans
support organization, and my numerous visits and
conversations with “Country.”
I recognized a common trait that I have seen in all heroes, regardless
of which war they were in: They possess a sense humility, and a deep
appreciation for life that strikes at one’s heart.
Quoting Rear Adm. George Tarrant in 1954, “Where Did We Get
Such Men?”
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.
You Gotta Laugh (and
Admire) Moms
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
In honor of Mother’s Day, what better way to
show our love and appreciation than to run
the following words of wisdom? Agree, disagree,
smile, laugh or shake your head all you want, but
you know that the quotes below are entirely true.
To moms and grandmas everywhere, a very Happy Mother’s Day.
1. When your mother asks, ”Do you want a piece of advice?” it’s
just a mere formality. It really does not matter if you answer yes or no.
You’re going to get it anyway. - Erma Bombeck
2. An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest – Spanish Proverb
3. There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has
it. – Chinese Proverb
4. A mother is a person who, seeing there are only 4 pieces of pie for
five people promptly announce she never did care for pie. – Tenneva
Jordan
5. The phrase “working mother” is redundant. - Jane Sellman
6. A mom forgives all our faults, not to mention one or two we don’t
even have. – Robert Brault
7. We have a secret in our culture and it’s not that child birth is
painful. It’s that women are strong. – Laura Harm
8. Any mother could do the jobs of several air traffic controllers with
ease. - Lisa Alther
9. It’s not easy being a mother. If it were, fathers would do it. – The
Golden Girls
10. I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then,
I want to move in with them. – Phyllis Diller
11. God could not be everywhere, and that’s why he made mothers.
– Rudyard Kipling
12. Mom, I do love you, even though I’ll never accept your friend
For You Trekkies
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
This month I thought I would write about an
actor all of you who are Trekkies & Trekkers
will remember fondly.
His name is Sean Kenney and he
played the physically disabled Fleet Captain
Christoper Pike.
It was a two-part episode in one of the
most revered and popular episodes of Star
Trek titled “The Menagerie. “ He was the
first of the two actors to be seen in the show.
In the original pilot for Star Trek,
Captain Pike was played by actor Jeffrey
Hunter. His appearance was used later in a
court martial scene, and he appeared as a
“Healthy” Captain Pike.
Sean took over the role and was rendered
mute and disabled to conceal the fact
that his voice was not the same as Jeffrey
Hunters and to hide the fact that he was
not the same actor. Ah, the magic of television!
Sean also did other TV shows, such as The Streets of San Francisco
and Police Woman as well as starring in films such as The Corpse
Grinders and Slumber Party in 1976 to name a few.
He also played Lt. DePaul in the episode “Arena.”
N2S2 | NNSS | NEVADA TEST SITE (NTS)
In 1980 he decided to become a photographer and has since become
a successful, very well known, highly sought after promotional
photographer.
I had the pleasure of meeting Sean and his darling wife Taki a few years
ago when we filmed “Unbelievable???”
the Star Trek Movie spoof starring Snoop
Dogg and several original cast members of
Star Trek.
We have since done several Star Trek
conventions together and have been
friends ever since. We’ll also be at the Star
Trek Convention at the Rio in Las Vegas this
coming August.
Not only is Sean a gifted actor and
photographer, but he is an all-around
nice guy and for those who have met him
at various conventions, I’m sure you will
quickly agree that he is a fan favorite...and
certainly one of my favorites.
Until next time... remember to never lose
hope, for you never know what tomorrow might bring.
Happy Mother’s Day Mrs. Nugent
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Dear Mrs. Nugent,
Happy Mother’s Day! Your son, Michael
Nugent, is doing just fine here in Las Vegas.
Many dreamers come here hoping for stardom. But it takes more
than hope to succeed in this town, and Michael’s
got what it takes: a plan and the guts to put that
plan into action.
He showed confidence and courage when he
packed his car and headed over 2,000 miles from
his home in Buffalo with only one performance on
the books...an invitation from Sun City Anthem’s
Lori and Richard Raine…a show that he worked
for free just to get his name known!
Michael’s work ethic and love for crooner
standards has helped him define his audience. He considers himself “a
gateway singer to the standards”, targeting his music to Baby Boomers
who grew up wearing Bobby Sox and listening to the“Bobbies”: Darin,
Vinton and Rydell…and the great crooners of the day, Frank and Dean,
Tony Bennett and others.
It was a special night when Ben Spano, general manager of the
Italian American Club alerted your son that Frankie Avalon was on the
reservation list. “Let him sing,” Spano suggested to songster Jerry Tiffe,
who was supplying the lounge’s Vegas Vibe that night.
“He’s from Buffalo,” Spano added, referencing the great local singers
hailing from your town.
Michael made Buffalo proud! Avalon told Michael, “You’re going to
be doing big showrooms someday, kid.” (That’s a photo of Ben and
Frankie Avalon with Your Boy.)
Avalon’s prediction came true when Michael
followed the advice of bass player Bob Sachs, “If
you want to make it, you need a show.”
For four nights, Michael filled Laughlin’s
Riverside Casino’s 400-seat showroom and he’s
taking his Michael Buble’ show to Texas for three
One Life
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
In the movie “One Life” Director James Hawes,
tells the story of a British humanitarian in
flashback form.
It stars Anthony Hopkins, Helena
Bonham Carter and Johnny Flynn.
The movie is about Sir Nicholas
Winton. While on vacation in 1938,
he discovered children living in dire
circumstances as Hitler was about to
invade Czechoslovakia.
He soon plotted to rescue these
children from certain death. Winston
was able to hide and arrange the escape
of 669 youths from Nazi occupied
Czechoslovakia just before World War
II.
Winton’s mother assisted him in loading kids on the trains called
“Kinder.” However the 8 th Kinder (with 250 children) never left the station
as that was the day the war broke out.
It was presumed they all ended up in one of Hitler’s concentration
camps. It haunted Winton until the day he died.
As for the 669 children, they made their way to England where his
mother placed them in foster homes out of harm’s way.
Long after the war was over, Winton was invited to attend a television
show named, “That’s Life.” The hostess seated Winton in the front row
where he could be seen by everyone.
She explained to all that more than 40
years earlier, as the Nazi’s were invading
Czechoslovakia, one man arranged for
the rescue of hundreds of children from
Prague. The hostess revealed that the
entire audience were some of the 669
children Winston rescued from death.
This part is a tearjerker. It
demonstrates how one person can
make a positive difference in the world.
Winton died in 2015 at the age of 106.
“One Life” is a heartwarming tribute
to an ordinary man who provided a remarkable humanitarian effort.
This is a very touching story and Anthony Hopkins is a master actor
supported by a great cast.
This film rates a big 5 on any rating scale. It’s a must watch!
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
When I was a child, my family had a summer
home in Upper
Greenwood Lake, New Jersey.
My favorite pastime there was to grab a juicy
MacIntosh apple and a book and head down
the road to my favorite spot for an afternoon of
reading.
My spot was a long, flat rock overlooking the
lake and it just invited you to sit and read. There
were no other kids my age in the neighborhood
but then, as now, books were my companions. I
was never alone so long as I had a book to read.
At the end of the day, I would head home and
usually find my mother cooking dinner. She would
talk about her day, her newest recipe and her latest
plan for redoing the house.
My dad, the inveterate handyman, would talk
about his latest projects. I talked about what I was
reading. How I loved being part of their discussions.
I jokingly say I was born with a hammer in one hand (to help my
dad) and a wooden spoon in the other (to help my mom). My love of
cooking comes from kitchen time with my mom, and my love of design
comes from watching her redecorating each season.
An Ode to Mothers and Fathers
May 2024
I’m certain I became an interior designer and cook because of my
mother and a building contractor because of my father. How lucky was
I!
My mother loved fresh fruit, and since apples
were plentiful on our property, I picked them for
the pies and applesauce she made. Since I prefer
homemade apple sauce, I use her recipe.
Don’t be afraid to use blemished apples or those
past their prime, just choose what you like. It’s
deceptively simple.
Homemade Apple Sauce (2 Servings)
Wash 5 large apples, then core. Place in wide pot
with ¼ cup water. Cook, covered, over medium
heat for 20 - 30 minutes; time varies according to
type of apple.
When apples are completely soft, uncover pot
and cool. Remove apples from pan (skins should
be falling off) then remove skins, Mash with a
potato masher. Delicious as an accompaniment to
pork dishes.
As a dessert, add sugar and cinnamon to taste. Top with whipped
cream.
Talk to Your Grandkids
By: Craig Smith / Exploring Your Roots
This is the time of the year that most genealogists
tell us to get organized. It is a good idea and
spring cleaning your genealogy documents and
records is always
recommended.
Additionally, recording a session with your
grandchildren for genealogy purposes can be
a wonderful way to preserve family memories
and stories for future generations. Here’s a
simple guide to help you make the most of
your recording session:
1. Select a quiet and comfortable space
where you and your grandchildren can sit
and talk without distractions.
2. Make sure the lighting and background are suitable for recording.
3. Think about some family-related topics or questions you’d like to
discuss during the session. This could include asking about their favorite
family traditions, memories of relatives, or significant events in your
family’s history.
Seems silly but it is important to preserve full names accurately.
Encourage your grandchildren to share their thoughts, memories, and
experiences related to your family. Ask open-ended questions to prompt
detailed responses. For example:
1. Can you tell me about your favorite family tradition?
2. Do you have any special memories of family gatherings or holidays?
Don’t hesitate to share your own stories and experiences with your
grandchildren. This can help them connect
with their family history and learn more
about their roots.
After the session, make sure to save the
recording in a safe and easily accessible
location. You may also want to organize it
alongside other family history documents and
recordings for future reference.
Genealogy is not only about preserving
the past but also about strengthening bonds
across generations. Don’t make the mistake I did.
My grandfather lived with us the last five years of his life. I wish I
had asked questions about his past. I have many loose ends about my
grandparents that I may sadly never discover.
Intuition: The Most Sacred Gift
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
One of my most profound intuitive experiences
occurred in 1991 after shedding 176 lbs.
I self-published a book, Love Your Fat Away,
a self-love workbook. It was a heartfelt book that people responded to
well and a fluke that somehow
ended up on six small best-seller
lists.
Some of the benefits that
arose from the massive publicity
I received was that various
organizations invited me to
attend their seminars so that
they could benefit from my
attendance and possibly use my
name in their publicity.
One of those events was a catered dinner and lecture on relationships
at a private mansion overlooking Lake Michigan in Illinois. The speaker,
JC, was a Nassau physicist who gave weekend seminars all over the U.S.
From the minute our eyes connected, JC explained that he already
knew everything about me and had been looking for someone like me
to date and partner with for a long time. His attentiveness surprised and
flattered me.
JC wooed me on the phone all week. He suggested that we write a
May 2024
relationship book together and that his manager manage us both.
JC, his manager, Pam, and I brunched the following weekend. I
followed them to his intensive workshop in Schaumburg.
He was everything a woman could ask for, so why was my gut unsettled
since I met him? JC repeatedly insisted that Pam was strictly his manager.
So I asked her directly when
I got her alone. She told me
he had proposed to her the day
before and accused me of being
a problem. I left immediately.
After a few days, she called
and asked what he said about
her. There was a silent pause,
and she said, “Oh my God, those
are the same phrases he used
to describe Lisa, a woman in
Milwaukee.”
Over the next month, we uncovered a total of seven fiances. All beautiful,
wealthy, successful women that he was in the process of conning.
Ten years later, a successful therapist and a friend in Laguna Beach,
called to tell me she was selling her 24-year practice to travel and teach
relationship workshops with the love of her life. It was JC.
Swimming Pool
Memories
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
For a big part of my life, first as a child then
later as a young parent, the official start of
summer was the day that the municipal swimming pool opened for
business.
During the summer when my boys were little tykes, we had one of
those cheap, round, inflatable pools in the backyard. It was fine, except
whenever I moved it for some reason, it revealed a large round area of
dead grass, never to be resuscitated until the next summer.
The other problem with the backyard pools was that little critters would
sometimes fall in the water and could not get out. I found quite a variety
of bugs, an occasional bird, and even a bat in the pool.
Call a Friend
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
Slip, slide, crash and down! A stumble on the
stairs and I was flat on my back in front of
everyone. Not really hurt, but I was mortified!
There I was, dead on the floor, with the gimpy knees that had betrayed
me. I couldn’t get up!
My floppy hat hung down over my left eye, and my hair, discreetly
tucked under the hat, unfurled in twenty wacky directions.
I looked like a floundering homeless person!
“Are you okay?” A concerned lady extended her hand, but before I
could grasp it, her friend yanked her away.
The boys, of course, thought the corpses were “cool” and protested
when I insisted on removing them.
Eventually, the boys were old enough for the public swimming pool
where I would keep watch on them in the baby pool with one eyeball,
while scanning a copy of “Being and Nothingness” by French philosopher
Jean-Paul Sartre with the other eye.
I couldn’t make heads or tails out of the book, but if someone asked
me what I was reading, it was certainly a lot cooler to respond, “Oh, just
a little ditty by Sartre,” instead of “Tarzan Rescues Jane from the Monkey
King” which I had left back at the house.
As they grew a little bit older, my kids seemed to blend in with the rest
of the screaming, splashing horde the moment they jumped into “the big
pool.” I found it terrifying to lose sight of them for even a second.
I imagine that contemporary parents have a similar experience on
summer days at the pool. Except many of them today are more likely
staring at their phones while the kids frolic in the water.
My three boys’ swimming experiences as youngsters were quite
different than mine. For example, they took lessons and actually learned
how to swim. While my idea of “swimming” was to wildly throw my arms
and kick my legs - resulting in a lot of splashing before slowly sinking to
the bottom of the pool.
May 2024
“Don’t touch her! If she’s hurt, she could sue you.” I blinked in
astonishment.
Finally on my feet, I stumbled to my car and drove home. I was shaking
and my head throbbed from where I’d grazed it on the tile floor. I decided
to call the EMT’s.
A group of the most gorgeous men I’d ever seen walked into my house.
I almost fainted! If only I was twenty-five years younger!
“Sit for a moment,” one said. He smiled and my heart melted. “Is it
okay if I touch the back of your head?”
“Oh yes!” “And your neck?” “Oh please, keep going!” We were laughing
as they drove me to the hospital by ambulance.
“Your head is fine. You’re discharged,” the doctor said. “However, you
have Covid.”
“What!!?” He prescribed medicine.
“Will you call me a taxi,” I asked the nurse. “I can’t,” she said. “Why?”
“You have Covid.”
“How am I supposed to get home?” “Call a friend?” “Who would do
that? Expose a friend to Covid?”
Stunned, I sat with my discharge papers and phone in hand until I
finally thought of a solution. I called a friend, my neighbors, Buddy and
Janet. They have my house key.
“ Buddy, I have Covid. Would you and Janet bring my car to the hospital?
I can drive home, and you can drive back in your car.” He laughed.
My heart sank. But then, “Don’t be silly, Dianne. I’m coming to get
you!”
And he did!
Is Your Estate in Order?
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
Isn’t it about time you finally got your estate in
order? Have you set up your family’s living trust
yet? (or kept up-to-date the one you have?)
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly so,
because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But few
are asking, “Exactly what kind of Trust vehicle am I getting?”
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a matter of a months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled or
pass away -- when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work
and when it’s too late to fix it!
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is - All Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out:
1. How a properly drafted Living Trust may make your loved ones’
inheritance virtually lawsuit, creditor and divorce-proof! (A Living Trust
that merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
2. When one married partner dies, does your trust protect the
survivors’ assets to last their entire life against all creditors including the
government?
3. Why your Living Trust plan must be set up and maintained properly
or it may not avoid the expenses, delays and headaches of Probate Court
after you’ve gone.
4. Why the wrong person may be in charge of your affairs if you’re ill
or disabled and you may not be able to replace them!
5. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to endure needless paperwork, legal and accounting
fees!
6. Why it’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones - after you’re gone! (such as
unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems!)
Whether your estate is $250,000 or $2,500,000 (or more) we invite
you to attend an eye-opening and thought-provoking estate planning
seminar. Gain the knowledge that you need to make informed and
intelligent decisions.
Then, take advantage of a discounted consultation with one of our
attorneys to review your existing Living Trust or to discuss how a new
Trust plan may be custom-designed. Isn’t it worth an hour of your time to
make sure you, your spouse, family and loved ones get the protection you
deserve? See the below for the seminar date and time most convenient for
you and CALL NOW 702/806-7777.
What’s My Secret?
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
I
’m often asked the question “What’s your
secret?” And it’s always the same answer. It’s no
secret!!
Good exercise, plus good food, plus good
nutritional supplements equals healthy
aging! Here’s a short, but not complete list
of my daily habits.
If you want to get into it in greater
depth, call me at 702/297-6440 and let’s
book a time.
First, walk outside as much as is
feasible. Up to 60 minutes if you can. Start
easy with 5 minutes out and 5 minutes
back and add a minute each time until you’re up to 60 minutes total.
Strength train two to three times a week. Less is necessary if you’re
using adaptive resistance. Keeping your muscle is important for long,
healthy living.
Remember, it’s your civic duty to be a little “dangerous” and be
capable of protecting yourself and your loved ones.
Eat high quality protein such as grassfed beef, pasture-raised eggs,
and wild caught fish. I also include organic broccoli daily. I start my
day with 3 pitted dates for their iron and to get the train moving.
Drink high quality, nutrient-dense supplements to fill in the gaps in
your diet. Getting ALL your minerals/trace minerals is critical. Stop by
the gym and we’ll stock you up.
Drink a couple cups a day of cayenne pepper/honey/lemon tea for
reducing inflammation. Take a half a
teaspoon of cayenne pepper, a tablespoon
of real honey, and a tablespoon of lemon
juice in 8 ounces of hot water.
I also seek to maintain balance with the
planet through an act called grounding,
which can improve sleep and reduce
anxiety/inflammation. The easiest way is
to walk barefoot in the grass whenever you
can.
Remember, regular exercise is the best
way to prevent depression and the consistency provides amazing mental
health benefits beyond the obvious physical benefits. I’m available for
consultation so just call me and set an appointment.
Do You Have a Mustang Story?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
There are a lot of seniors who have moved to
Las Vegas from New York. If you’re one of them,
maybe you were lucky enough to have attended
the World’s Fair in 1964.
If you were there on April 17, 1964, you
saw history in the making. That was the
day they introduced the Ford Mustang to
the world.
It was unlike anything else on the
road. Ford called it a pony car, and it
was designed to appeal to a youthful
generation.
Now, 60 years later, the Mustang is still
going strong, and has an audience of
enthusiasts who not only own a car, but
a lifestyle. Everyone has a Mustang story.
Either you owned one or knew someone who did.
This is the only pony car in continuous production for 60 years.
Camaro and Challenger, which came along later, have come and gone
— twice. Only Mustang has remained constant over six decades.
The Mustang’s popularity is (and always has been) because it’s
fun to drive (we’ll just forget about the gas-crisis 1970s for now),
affordable, and inclusive. If you own one, you are part of a community
of enthusiasts who socialize with other owners, participate in car shows,
race the vehicles, and even customize them to suit personal tastes.
Over 10 million Mustangs have been sold worldwide since its
inception and are sold on six of seven continents (Antarctica does not
have any Mustangs, although Ford did try to fly one out there to claim
the continent, but it was cost prohibitive.)
The popular Mustang has appeared in
over 3,000 television shows and movies,
and has been immortalized in songs and
music videos. It’s the most Instagrammed
WHAT IS TRIGGER FINGER?
TRIGGER FINGER - NOW CURED IN THE OFFICE!
By:Ryan Grabow, MD / Help My Hands!
Concierge Carpal Tunnel and Hand Surgery - A
National Carpal Tunnel Center of Excellence
Trigger Finger is a very common condition that causes
catching or locking in your finger or thumb when
trying to open your hand from a closed fist. It may
be painless catching or locking, but typically, trigger
fingers are painful and the palm is tender in line with
the affected finger or thumb. Usually worst in the
morning, triggering may occur throughout the day. It
is caused by thickening of one of the tendons to your
finger and narrowing of one of the bands that guides the tendon. If
left untreated finger stiffness and loss of grip is common.
WHAT IS DUPUYTREN’S DISEASE CONTRACTURE?
Often confused with trigger finger, this
is a condition causing thickening and
contracture of the tissue in the palm of
your hand and fingers. Unlike a trigger
finger which can typically be pulled
straight, Dupuytren’s contracture remains
bent and cannot be straightened even if you pull on the finger. Dr.
Grabow is the only hand specialist trained in a simple in-office
procedure to relieve your Dupuytren’s contracture under local
anesthesia in the office.
HOW IS TRIGGER FINGER TREATED?
Initial treatment for a trigger finger is a steroid (cortisone) injection.
Approximately 70% of the time this will cure the catching. If it does
not completely go away or it comes back, a second injection may be
recommended. If it comes back after two injections - surgery is the
only solution! Most surgeons will require you to go to a hospital or
surgery center and be sedated for the surgery. You have to stop your
blood thinners and other medications and get medical clearance.
They make an incision in your palm and cut the band that causes the
catching.
ADVANCED TREATMENT - NO SEDATION, MICRO INCISION,
ULTRASOUND GUIDED - TRIGGER FINGER RELEASE
Thankfuly, Dr. Grabow is a national expert in a micro invasive
procedure to cure your triggering or carpal tunnel in the office! Not
only do you not need to be sedated or stop your medications - but it’s
covered by Medicare and commerical insurance as well!
Using ultrasound, Dr. Grabow places a special cutting device thru a
micro incision in your palm - releasing your trigger finger in minutes
while you lay back and relax to your favorite music or streaming
video. There are no stitches, no need to stop blood thinners, and only
minimal post procedure discomfort. You are allowed to drive, use a
walker or cane, and perform light activities the day of your procedure.
Most patients return to their normal activities in under a week.
It’s Good to be the King
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
26
May 2024
grew up with a dog named Rex. He was a
I chubby, flop-eared, brown and black German
Shepherd, and my brother never let me forget
it wasn’t my dog.
He was right, of course, because when given a choice, Rex would always
run to my brother, and not me. Dogs can be cruel like that.
It was in those early years of Rex’s indifference to me that I grew an
indifference to dogs. Sure, they’re great to pet and play with, but in the
end, I began to look at them more as a chore.
I concluded that I was just a cat person. Cats are easy. You can put
down a bucket of food, a gallon of water, and a fresh box of poo-poopebbles
and head to Europe for a week.
When you get back, the food and water will have been transferred to the
box and the cat will eventually come and say hello. Simple.
In the same scenario, the dog will have eaten the food, drank the
water, eaten your couch and throw pillows, pooped in a mathematically
impossible grid across the entire house, and anxiety shed enough to start
a brand-new dog.
Recently, when Dudley, our puggle of 12 years passed, I put my foot
down and said, “Never again.” We had two black cats and were just fine
without a dog.
After all, I was the king of this castle, right? I was the captain of this
starship, and I simply wasn’t going to bring another big responsibility
into our lives.
The food, the doctor’s bills, the hair, and the “what do we do when we
are leaving for a week” conversations just didn’t need to happen.
As I sit at my desk and computer tonight, long after midnight with all
of the Birds snugly in their nests, I look up to see two jet-black eyes staring
back at me. Drool is coming heavily from a long snout filled with a tennis
ball between Deliah’s teeth. I take off my glasses and rub my face.
Good to be the king? I think I’ve been overthrown.
Fostering Animals Saves Lives
By: Annoula Wylderich / Our Best Friends
Upon retirement, we finally find that time to
pursue a hobby, travel, or watch too much TV
and sit around. We also have
the opportunity to help shelter
and rescue animals without making a long-term
commitment or acquiring the costs of pet ownership.
Fostering animals literally saves lives. Every year,
countless animals end up in shelters, frightened,
confused, and at risk of never getting out alive.
These vulnerable creatures will not do well in a
shelter environment, no matter how well they may
be cared for. With the high intake of animals at local
shelters and rescues, it’s impossible for each animal
to get the attention, care, exercise and enrichment
they need to thrive while they await a forever home.
By opening their homes to foster pets, individuals
play a pivotal role in alleviating the overcrowding
in shelters and reducing the euthanasia rates. Furthermore, fostering
provides animals with the opportunity to decompress in a home
environment, where they can receive the personalized attention and
socialization that will keep them happy and increase their chances of
adoption.
Some shelter animals arrive with special needs, whether it’s
recovering from an illness or injury, or overcoming fear and anxiety. A
foster home will provide them with the time and support they need to
heal and thrive.
Additionally, it will help free up space and resources for the shelters,
enabling them to rescue more animals rather
than turning them away due to lack of space. All
necessary supplies are provided to the foster family,
so cost will not be an issue.
For the foster family, the experience provides an
opportunity to make a meaningful difference in
the life of the animal they take home for a week or
longer, while they enjoy the companionship and
unconditional love that pets provide. Moreover,
fostering promotes a culture of empathy and
compassion within communities, inspiring others
to make a positive impact.
By opening their hearts and homes to animals in
need, foster families demonstrate a powerful act of
kindness that will make a lasting difference in the lives of countless
vulnerable creatures.
Castor Oil & Hair Growth
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
I
’m a sucker for natural remedies. So of course,
when I saw all the trending hype about castor
oil and hair growth
I decided to look
further into it.
Coincidently, after seeing the castor oil
trend, I was at a birthday party and one of
the guests was an aesthetician. I asked her
about using castor oil and she said it was
great for all things hair.
She even suggested it for eyebrows and
eyelashes. I wouldn’t have even considered
it on my eye lashes but for my brows it
seemed interesting.
After a few quick google searches, the
views were mixed. I was surprised at all the
things people did with castor oil - like putting it in your belly button.
Some articles also talked about side effects and that is when I decided
this was one natural remedy trend I would not be trying.
One very rare, but possible side effect is called hair felting. I had
Appearance Maturity
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
The other day, I was parked in a school zone where
the students ranged in age from kindergarten
to senior High School. It was interesting to notice
how they
groomed themselves and how
they dressed.
The kindergarteners to third
graders dressed very nicely
and had obeyed their parents’
grooming rules. It reminded me
of myself at that age.
Junior High and High School
hit and so did your self-esteem.
God forbid your outfit or hair
were different from the other
students!
My mother gave me a “Tony
Perm” where my head looked like a sheep who had spent way too much
time in the Highlands. I was never so embarrassed in my life! I tried to
hide in the bushes at “break time” to avoid all the rude comments and
snickering.
This did not help the emotional stage I was in where you don’t like
your parents and your ego is about as strong as tissue paper. We also wore
girdles and steel bras that were so torturous that they could have been
used by the FBI to get information out of you.
May 2024
never heard of it before, but it is a terrible scalp disorder.
There have been incidents of people with no known scalp issues,
getting a castor oil treatment and their hair becomes totally matted, so
matted that it cannot be combed out and
has to be cut off. It has also been reported
to have happened after a coconut oil
treatment.
Again, this is extremely rare, however,
having read the stories and seen the
photos, I decided not to chance it, my luck
isn’t all that good. I think I’ll keep the use
of castor oil in my childhood past.
Remember, just because it’s trending,
especially regarding your health, you
have to do your due diligence. Check it
out thoroughly because people will post
almost anything for likes and clicks.
College finally came. What a wonderful time of life! I was free to dress,
wear make-up, and do anything I wanted.
Of course, just like my college friends, I made a fool of myself by
drinking “Skip and Go Nakeds” (Beer, Vodka & Whiskey Sour Mix). I
remember spending the night under a pool table with my Sorority sister
who was worse off than I was.
Those were still the days of
girdles, tight bras and hosiery.
Talk about chaffing! My make-up
and hair had to be perfect!
Dressing during my working
life was a little easier. The girdle
died, thank God! We had “Casual
Fridays” where I could wear slacks
and a shirt……sometimes,
without a bra….Scandalous!
Make up and now only short
hair were in fashion. However, flat
shoes were replaced with stiletto
heels. Pain!
Retirement! Mascara and blush only on special occasions. God’s
favorite - pants with an elastic waist.
Comfortable shoes only. Beautiful, grey hair. Color it only if you wish
but no one cares. A slightly ragged sweater that you have worn to death.
I have replaced my pretty panties with “Granny Panties” that are two
sizes too large for me. Freedom!
My Golf Clothes Have Changed!
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
They say the more things change, the more they
stay the same. This may not be the case when
it comes to golf attire for
men and women.
As a young girl, I was aware that my dad
really loved golf. He watched it on TV and played
in a league at one of the 3 golf courses in our
hometown.
My parents even took golf vacations with their
friends to get away from the harsh winters of the
Midwest. In the early ‘70s until I graduated from
high school, I can’t recall a summer where one
or both of them didn’t play golf.
When did golf attire become so popular?
During the early twenties, golf started to gain
traction among the wealthy elites, and clothes
during that time were formal. In fact, a Vanity
Fair article stated the well-dressed golfer should wear a single-breasted
jacket, waistcoat, long socks and golf cap.
On the other hand, women (who were not allowed to play competitively
until the late 19th century) were expected to be modest and “ladylike.”
They often wore dresses, with multiple layers and heels.
Thankfully, times have changed. As the twenties came to an end, a heat
wave during the 1933 U.S. Open was one of the factors to create more
breathable fabrics like collared shirts and flannel pants for men.
Women’s attire took a bit longer; however, by
the 1960s the Skort was introduced and by the
‘70s women golfers were allowed to wear slacks
and polo shirts. As an avid golfer, I am grateful
for the many options made available to women.
The dedication of stores like Golf Galaxy, Club
Champion and the Las Vegas Golf Superstore
are just a few examples of the fascination with
everything golf related. It’s so amazing to see
all the styles and colors offered in the way of
clothing.
The best part of all the different styles available
to men and women - you can dress it up or down
depending on the course you play. As Bob Hope
once said, “If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you
play, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.”
helping individuals with their packing needs for travel, as
well as finding current styles for both men & women. You can
Spring Has Sprung!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Spring has sprung! Warmer weather, flowers and
(sadly) allergies. More walkers are appearing
in my neighborhood.
I’ve started my spring cleaning, yikes!
Purging clothes and household items
that I haven’t used or worn in years. My
charitable organizations will be receiving
my “treasures” soon.
And it feels so good to purge and make
room. Someone told me that when you
purchase a new item of clothing, to get rid
of one item. I haven’t done that in years, so
I think I’ll start following that philosophy!
Makes sense, right?
Another item on my spring list is to find
healthy recipes and not only to keep them,
but actually make them! One I found is
Blueberry Yogurt Protein Bars. All you need is:
a. 1 cup of plain yogurt
b. 2 tsp. honey
c. 1 cup fresh blueberries
d. 1/2 cup slivered almonds
Mix honey and yogurt, stir in blueberries and almonds. Drop by
tablespoons onto tray and freeze about 2 hours. Makes about 18-25
bites. Yum!
They were really delicious. You can also alternate with chopped
walnuts if you wish.
My goal before the summer heat hits us
is to try each morning to walk around the
neighborhood for at least 20-30 minutes. I
plug in my earphones to my iPod and listen
to some really upbeat music.
But I always make sure to carry a bottle
of water while walking. Also take your
cell phone with you. One of my neighbors
fell while walking and had to wait until
someone came past her to help.
Remember that with the warmer weather,
we need to hydrate more! Rule of thumb -
divide your weight (be honest) by two and
that would be how many ounces of pure
water your body will need each day. Sounds like a lot, but really it isn’t.
Enjoy life - as we are not promised tomorrow.
Are You an Outlier?
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Do you live in the fringe of your life? Do you
feel you’re aging differently from those in
your circle or tribe? Then, you may be an Outlier
when it comes to aging!
Now, I hear you saying: What the heck is an Outlier? How would I know
if I am one? What does it look like? There are many Outlier identifiers
and being one can result from any of them. Here’s a few:
1. You have unusual, isolated, or unpopular views on life
2. You have non-mainstream opinions on the general state of society
3. You have inflexible, positive or negative, takes on your generation/
others
4. You choose to live and age in your own nonconventional way
32
May 2024
5. You have unique traits and behaviors that seem strange to others
6. You view yourself as an orange sitting in a bunch of apples
As an Outlier, you may be misunderstood, ridiculed, alone, and
avoided. You may feel like you don’t fit in. You may even be viewed as
an impostor.
But none of these identifiers make you an impostor because that would
mean you’re not being you. However, they may make you an Outlier.
It should be no surprise that Seniors can be seen as Outliers. As we age,
we see things differently. We rethink and reshape our approach to life.
Our views and opinions shift to fit our adapting mindset. And we’re
firm in our beliefs and our styles of engagements, as well as who we are
and what we engage.
Do you spend time seeking your category or your tribe? Are you unable
to find a place where you really fit in?
Have you begun to doubt your ability to live inside the circle because it’s
become obvious that you are more comfortable in the fringe? Don’t worry.
Living in the fringe, makes you special and an independent thinker!
Don’t doubt who you are and your new take on life…you’re an
Outlier! You’re aging your way - and that’s positive aging!
What is a “Pinched” Nerve?
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Many people suffer from pain in their neck
or back and are told they have a pinched
nerve. The term
“pinched nerve” is not a medical term
but its meaning is close enough.
When nerves exit the spine, they do
so through what is called the neural
foramina which basically means
“nerve hole.” The size of this hold is
maintained by the intervertebral discs
between vertebrae (bones) of the spine.
As we age, these intervertebral discs
get thinner. An individual who is in
their fifties or sixties is on average
about two inches shorter than they
were in high school. Because the discs
get thinner with time, there is less space
between the vertebrae where the nerve exits.
If this space becomes too small, the nerve gets “pinched.” This
compression on the nerve elicits a response from the nerve that we
experience as pain - sometimes severe pain.
If a nerve is compressed in the neck, that pain may not be solely
localized to the neck. It may radiate to the shoulder blade, the shoulder,
down the arm or up into the head.
You may even feel it on all of these places and not feel pain in the neck,
depending on how the nerve is being compressed.
If the nerve is being compressed in the low back, pain may also be felt
in the hip, butt, thigh, leg and/or foot.
Once again, with a compressed nerve,
pain may be felt in any of these places
without the person necessarily feeling
pain in the back.
X-rays and MRIs are commonly used
to diagnose this condition. Easier still is
to use orthopedic tests such as what is
called Spurling’s test.
With neck pain, the patient puts
their head as far back as possible and
then looks over the shoulder of the side
affected. If this movement elicits pain,
the nerve is being compressed.
In most cases, acupuncture and chiropractic care can relieve the pain
of a pinched nerve. More serious cases require surgical intervention.
Faith Over Religion
By: Bruce Ewing / Having Faith
get a little bit squeamish when anyone leads
I into a conversation saying, “Bruce you’re
religious…” Yes, I attend church, and have
worked for a church for many years.
So, why does my skin crawl when someone calls me religious? Truth
is, I’m not religious! I don’t really like religion.
Does that mean I was living hypocritically for the years I worked for
and attended churches? No, I don’t think so. Let me explain.
I believe that religion is a very different thing than faith. Faith is a
personal thing and my motivating force.
Religion, on the other hand, has more to do with organizational
power over people on behalf of God - without God asking anyone to
take power over others for Him. “Establishments of religion” judge and
sometimes throw away people on behalf of God.
miles west of Las Vegas, you can step into a rejuvenating, silky smooth,
mineral-rich, 104-degree hot bath and feel your worries and stress melt
away.
“Las Vegas seniors make it a day trip to take a warming dip,” Tecopa
Hot Springs Resort office manager Genevieve Church said. “Visitors
from all over the world stop on their way to Las Vegas, or upon leaving
“Faith” is about living by the LOVE of God.
I call myself a Jesus-follower (instead of a Christian) because Jesus
lived and taught LOVE in ways that encourage me to live knowing that
LOVE and GRACE cover everything.
I have a deep respect for Judaism because it is a faith based on LOVE;
on hospitality toward all and is practiced with questions/discussion to
understand scripture and live it out in a way that is fair and best for all.
The Islamic Faith, in its most basic way, sets a goal to follow the will
of God in loving ways - praying, helping those in need, and growing
their faith through fasting and prayer.
All three of these basic religions have at times participated in life in
unkind, unloving ways. But if we get back to the basics of faith as Jews,
Christians and Muslims, we will get back to the importance of LOVE.
I enjoy going to church, not for the religion, but for the encouragement
I receive studying the motivation of LOVE. I encourage all to look at
things and consider this: If it’s not LOVE, it’s not God.
Until someone can convince me otherwise, religion will never be
important to me. I simply want to live a life of faith. LOVE TO ALL!
to clean away the sins of the city.”
According to the Resort, their therapeutic waters originate deep
in the earth’s crust, hundreds of miles underground, where aquifers
are geothermally heated by magma chambers. When that water is
propelled through rock with incredible force and energy, it is pushed
through mineral deposits that dissolve into the water and makes its
way to the surface.
Intermountain Health finds soaking in hot springs can detox
your skin, relax your body and mind, improve your circulation, and
help with joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, eczema and
psoriasis, gout, high blood pressure, and digestive issues.
At Tecopa, the private bathing rooms allow you and your partner(s)
to enjoy the warm penetration in 350-gallon tubs. You can dip into the
ripples and waves or lie on the sunken lounge for a soak.
The heat and sound of slapping swells enfold you while you enjoy
each other’s company. While bathing suits are left to the discretion of
the participants, Tecopa’s Church said they prohibit passion in the pool,
for health reasons.
The churning waters can be enjoyed throughout the day in indoor
bathing rooms that feature skylights, so you can feel like you’re outside
while being protected from the harsh desert elements. You can even
take a healing dip in the evening, especially after enjoying dinner at the
rustic Steak And Beer where 5-Star Chef Eric turns up the heat.
Tecopa is a sizzling spot for seniors to enjoy the warmth of the hot
springs and steamy overnights at the Resort’s motel rooms and cabins.
Time to Complete Your Garden
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
In May, we have the opportunity to spend a
great deal of time completing any remaining
activities needed for a successful growing season.
If you are planning on adding any plants or perhaps adding raised
beds to your landscape, you may need to add additional “soil” to your
garden. This leads to the question: “Is there a difference between
garden soil and potting soil and are
they interchangeable?”
There is a difference and they are
NOT interchangeable!
Usually, potting soil is not soil at all,
but is made up of organic materials
that are mixed with chemical
additives necessary for plant growth.
It is primarily used in indoor pots and certain decorative planters
around your garden.
Garden soil is “real soil” that is rich in organic materials and
biological activity that has been augmented with compost to retain
moisture. Whether using potting soil (indoors) or garden soil in
your garden, make certain that you “solar sterilize” by placing the
unopened bags of soil in direct sunlight outdoors for a full day. The
sun will heat the soil to about 160 F killing off all insect eggs and
organisms.
Outdoors, if you are going to add organic mulch to your soil,
first apply a layer of diatomaceous soil to inhibit infestation of
“exoskeleton” insects in your garden.
With the exception of Palms, May through early June is the last time
to apply fertilizer to your landscaping since you do not want to stimulate
delicate plant growth that can be damaged by high temperatures and
direct summer sun. Check for yellowing leaves which can be caused
by iron deficiency (Chlorosis) and
apply chelated iron when needed.
As a “proactive” measure, you
should apply systemic insecticide
to the soil around the root areas to
prevent insects. For visible insect
infestation, treat with any “contact”
insecticide.
Follow the Summer irrigation schedule setting timers to a pre-dawn
and/or post sunset start time with a 30 minutes run time. Frequently
check drip/bubble emitters for proper location and for blockage and
reposition and/replace where necessary.
China Propaganda Drop
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Taiwan and China are frequently in the news.
Taiwan wants to remain a free nation without
China’s control. And China regards Taiwan as a renegade province.
You may not know of propaganda balloon drops. I am not aware of
them being readily used in 21 st century warfare, but I witnessed China
using this method to drop propaganda leaflets over Taiwan during the
mid-1970s and to be fair, Taiwan did the same to China.
During the Vietnam War era, American military members were
stationed in Taiwan. U.S. Air Force crew members regularly flew from
central Taiwan to Southeast Asia in support of that war.
Ching Chuan Kang Air Base (CCK) was considered a “remote”
assignment. Families usually did not accompany the married military
member assigned there.
My husband
was stationed at
CCK 19-months
before our family
was granted
accompanied status
and we joined
him in Taiwan.
Living there
was a matchless
experience.
Our children attended a missionary school for English taught
lessons. Each day was like a page from National Geographic.
We lived in a housing compound of two-story duplexes owned by the
Bank of Taiwan, designed for military families. The compound had a
playground in the center. Outside the fencing, on three sides, were rice
paddies.
One quiet afternoon, my husband John noticed a large balloon with
parcels touch down on the playground and drift upward again. John
called to me to come see what he had just observed. When I looked
out the front window, the balloon was still in sight, bobbing along in
the breeze.
We went to the playground, where a tied parcel had detached and
we retrieved it. Once back inside, we discovered Communist Chinese
propaganda leaflets and called local authorities, who promptly arrived
to collect them.
I confess to holding back a sampling as souvenirs of a unique
experience.
In the mid-1970s, it was unthinkable China could and would
invade North American air space with spy balloons, but this has now
been carried out. It makes my experience of witnessing a propaganda
balloon old-school, but certainly an account I thought worth sharing.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
There is an old saying, and I’ve said it a million
(well not quite a million) times - Life is
what happens while you’re making plans.
And it has happened
to all of us, even me.
Case in point. In August of 2019 we
planned a big Vegas Voyagers interfaith tour
to Israel. I was planning on being one of the
tour leaders and was really looking forward to this trip.
Israel is one of my most favorite places in the world to
visit. Unfortunately, the “fates” had other ideas. I needed
emergency mitral valve open heart repair surgery three months earlier
in June and it took me a bit longer than three months to recover from
that surgery.
And medical setbacks or family obligations can pop up at any time
for any one of us. A grandchild’s wedding is announced or a graduation
ceremony is scheduled and that Hawaiian Island cruise or European
River cruise is now in jeopardy. What is one to do?
I always tell folks not to panic. If you know of conflicts well-enough
in advance, just cancel the trip you planned.
Life is What Happens…
The Panama Canal
By: Dianne & Burt Davis / Our Vacation
The Panama Canal is an engineering marvel.
We sailed through it in early 2024 on the Viking
Star’s Panama Canal & Pacific Coast Cruise. As we journeyed from L.A.
to Ft. Lauderdale, on board lecturers gave us background and prepared
us for what we would see and experience.
History: In 1534, King Charles V of
Spain, at the urging of his Conquistadors
ordered a survey for a canal to connect the
Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. He realized
that a canal would eliminate the need for
treasure ships from Peru to travel around
the tip of South America to reach Spain.
Besides distance issues, sailing around
the tip is dangerous due to the rough seas.
Building a canal across the Isthmus
of Panama was hazardous. The area is
mountainous with thick jungles and disease-carrying mosquitoes. The
soil varies in quality and is unstable. The French were not aware of
these problems when they began construction in 1881 and failed after
ten years of efforts.
In 1903, the United States purchased the rights to build a canal from
the French. Unfortunately, Panama was part of Columbia then and
Columbia’s senate rejected the United States’ plan.
But a group of Panamanian patriots, with American assistance,
revolted and declared independence from Columbia. The new
Penalties for most trips don’t start to apply until three months before
the trip. We always highly recommend purchasing trip cancellation
insurance.
If you are cancelling within three months
of travel, and it is for a medical reason, this
insurance will usually reimburse you for all
costs incurred.
We have seen Vegas Voyagers having to
cancel or postpone their trips with us. Be
assured we are here to help you navigate
through a cancellation or rebooking process.
We can always help you “plan” that next
new trip. We just hope that another “Life is
what happens” event doesn’t come along.
*HOLD THE DATES: Our next VEGAS VOYAGER meetings are
scheduled for Monday, June 17th, 10:00 am Sun City Summerlin,
Desert Vista Community Center AND Tuesday, June 18th at 10:00
am at Sun City McDonald Ranch Community Center
We will be discussing our bus to the boat cruises: (1) seven night
Coastal California in November, (2) ten night Mexican Riviera in
January, and (3) 16 night Tony Arias Hawaiian Island cruise in
February. Please RSVP at: fairtravel@aol.com.
Panamanian government signed a treaty for the U.S. to build and
manage the canal in perpetuity.
The United States began construction in 1904 and completed it in
1914. The disease problem was solved by killing most mosquitoes with
insecticide. The U. S. managed the Canal until 1999 when it was turned
over to Panama.
Engineering: Ships traversing the
Canal have to be raised from sea level
and lowered back to cross Panama’s
hilly terrain. This is accomplished with a
series of locks designed to transport ships
through the canal.
Ocean water is corrosive, so fresh water
from Gatun Lake must be used to fill the
locks. Since Panama has virtually eight
months of heavy rain, it was felt that there
would always be enough fresh water.
Unfortunately, several recent years of drought has reduced the
availability of fresh water from Gatun Lake. Therefore the Canal has
restricted passage of large cruise ships.
While we do not consider ourselves experts on The Panama Canal,
we learned a great deal and had a good trip.
Burt and his wife, Vegas Voice columnist Dianne Davis, love
to travel the world and share what they learned along the way.
Once again our Vegas Voice thanks for sharing their worldwide
adventures.

“And That’s The Way It Isn’t”
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Those of us old enough to remember the
news broadcasts of CBS
Correspondent Walter Cronkite
can recite his nighty sign off –
“And that’s the way it is.”
Viewers had no doubt that what was reported
was what was happening without any editorial
or bias. Not to say that Cronkite didn’t have any
opinions, or that he didn’t broadcast his point of
views on occasion.
That being said, he always (without exception)
captioned those broadcasts as COMMENTARY
which was displayed on the screen. As the Vietnam War progressed in
late 1969, Cronkite went on the air to express his opinion that “We need
to get out now before we lose too many more in battle!”
Then President Lyndon B. Johnson concluded that “Cronkite is the
conscience of America, and as he goes, so goes the nation!”
Cronkite was, to the vast majority of Americans, the most trusted
newsman in the country. Sadly today the nightly national news
broadcasts are riddled with commentary, opinion and biasness so
extreme that the facts take a back seat to “journalistic propaganda!”
Regardless of your political point of view, every
single national television broadcast expresses a
particular political point of view when reporting the
“news.”
One example - the issue of Immigration. For
the left wing press, they are immigrants looking to
better their lifestyle and we should embrace them
with open arms.
To the right, they are illegal immigrants flouting
our legal system and displacing American from
their homes because there is no other place to house
them. The rule of law has become more a point of view held by each of
us based on our political positions.
Respect for factual news is pure fantasy. Is there hope things will
change for the better? Nope. Not in my lifetime. I hope I’m wrong!
By: Liz Breier / This & That
What is equivalent to having your child burned
to death in their crib? What is equivalent to
having your spouse taken hostage and after six
months not knowing if they are dead or alive?
There is no moral equivalence between the unprovoked
brutal attack on October 7 on Israel by Hamas and the
unfortunate loss of civilian Palestinian lives in Gaza.
More than 70% of the inhabitants of Gaza support
Hamas. Hamas uses women and children, the elderly
and the sick as their shields by hiding underneath
schools and hospitals… and then the world condemns
Israel.
Their own brothers have turned their back on the
Arabs in Gaza. Jordan and Egypt both share borders but
have stanchly refused to allow Palestinians entry from
Gaza. Jordan’s King Abdullah II said, “No refugees in
Jordan, no refugees in Egypt.”
Regardless of the poor response of neighboring Arab states, Israel is
condemned for not doing more for the civilians: allowing more aid, more
food, most of which is absconded by the militants anyway. “Withdraw”,
“pullback”, “cease-fire” are the cries of many nations unfortunately,
including many in the United States and in positions of power.
I must ask, why Israel, the victim of the Hamas attacks, is left with the
burden of caring for those that mostly wanted Hamas in power, those that
cheered on October 7? Maybe I should not be so surprised.
After all, Israel is the Jewish state and is not equivalent in many eyes
to any other nation. Any nation that has ever fought back, defended itself
40
Moral Equivalence
May 2024
and in so doing destroyed hundreds of thousands of civilian lives has
never received the same condemnation as is heaped on Israel.
October 7 was not a military attack. It was the brutal murder of unarmed
civilians, teens, babies, women, brutal rapes, immolation that were the
actions of the day. Somehow the world seems to feel that Israel should not
do whatever is necessary to free the remaining hostages
(if any are still alive) or retrieve their remains for the
many that may be deceased.
Israel must eradicate Hamas for its own survival.
Hamas is declaring victory because of the drawdown
and failure to proceed into Ramallah. Perhaps they have
succeeded.
The US, once Israel’s best friend, is clearly not the
staunch supporter of Israel that it was on October 8 and
that is becoming clearer each day with the US abstention
in March of UN Security Council resolution demanding
an immediate ceasefire – but failing to call for the
release of even one hostage.
The recent attack from Iran inspired our government into lending a
hand in defending Israel, but then immediately advised that there would
be no participation in a counterattack – so “take it on the chin Israel”
seems to be the message.
Israel has no choice because there is no moral equivalence between
being attacked and defending yourself. Israel will do what needs to be
done.
Happy to be an Older Adult
By: Eric Thurman / Thrive Spiritually
Stroll down the cosmetics aisle of a store and
notice the labels. A popular sales pitch says
that something is “Anti-Aging.”
Those creams and lotions are best sellers among beauty products.
But wait a minute! Anti-aging? Something about that isn’t right.
We can’t say we’re anti-blue eyes or anti-left-handed people. So, aim
to look your best, just don’t become anti-aging.
There are subtle and sometimes harsh prejudices against aging. Not
from me. I’m happy to be an older adult.
Aging is good. Getting older is a blessing. In fact, the older you are,
the more fortunate you are. A tragedy is when someone dies young.
I’m grateful to have lived longer than both my grandfather and my
father. By God’s grace, I hope to enjoy many more years.
Aging isn’t something to be dreaded. A better approach is to welcome
this season of life and relish its benefits.
There are plenty of reasons why you and I matter. Did you know that
over the last hundred years, the number of people over 65 grew five
times faster than the overall population? We’re an important bunch.
Our numbers will double again in the next ten years. Let’s hold our
advanced years in high esteem.
While many voices may be condescending about age, the Bible is
pro-aging. It’s a key source for my anticipation about what’s ahead.
Psalm 92 extols old age. Verses 12 and 13 encourage us to recognize
that we are meant to flourish.
Then, verse 14 gives specific examples of what God intends for us:
“They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green”
This is good news. “Bear fruit” is an ancient way of saying that God’s
design is for our lives to be filled with meaning, purpose, and value as
we age.
What does this look like? It paints a vibrant picture of a thriving plant
that stays fresh, green, and continually produces desirable fruit.
This is more than reminiscing about our past. God wants us to
flourish throughout this season of our lives, too!
