Do You Have a Mustang Story?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
There are a lot of seniors who have moved to
Las Vegas from New York. If you’re one of them,
maybe you were lucky enough to have attended
the World’s Fair in 1964.
If you were there on April 17, 1964, you
saw history in the making. That was the
day they introduced the Ford Mustang to
the world.
It was unlike anything else on the
road. Ford called it a pony car, and it
was designed to appeal to a youthful
generation.
Now, 60 years later, the Mustang is still
going strong, and has an audience of
enthusiasts who not only own a car, but
a lifestyle. Everyone has a Mustang story.
Either you owned one or knew someone who did.
This is the only pony car in continuous production for 60 years.
Camaro and Challenger, which came along later, have come and gone
— twice. Only Mustang has remained constant over six decades.
The Mustang’s popularity is (and always has been) because it’s
fun to drive (we’ll just forget about the gas-crisis 1970s for now),
affordable, and inclusive. If you own one, you are part of a community
of enthusiasts who socialize with other owners, participate in car shows,
race the vehicles, and even customize them to suit personal tastes.
Over 10 million Mustangs have been sold worldwide since its
inception and are sold on six of seven continents (Antarctica does not
have any Mustangs, although Ford did try to fly one out there to claim
the continent, but it was cost prohibitive.)
The popular Mustang has appeared in
over 3,000 television shows and movies,
and has been immortalized in songs and
music videos. It’s the most Instagrammed
vehicle, has the most Facebook followers,
and is responsible for over 170 owners’
clubs in the U.S., with over 100 clubs
internationally.
There is truly nothing else like it.
According to Ford, Mustang is more
than a car; it’s a forward-looking icon of
freedom and self-expression. We couldn’t
agree more.
