How I Spent my Summer Vacation
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
Don’t even think it! That was my Rana’s
immediate response – and that was before
I even asked the question.
As I wrote last month,
we were celebrating my
becoming a septuagenarian
on a two-week cruise to
Europe. Suffice to say, we
had a wonderful time,
truly a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
Like I have done my entire
adult life, we were joined by
our Vegas Voice travel editor
Stu Cooper and wife Sharon.
The four of us have gone on
so many trips and cruises
together, it’s like we know
what the other couple is
going to do or say before we do it.
On this occasion, we were in the “House of Scotland” in Edinburgh,
souvenir shopping (that happens a lot while we’re on “holiday”) and
my PILL (partner in love & life) caught me looking at Scottish men’s
clothing – kilts.
“Forget it” she exclaimed loud enough that left no doubt her final
position on this subject. “With your fat ass and bony legs, you’ll
scare children and probably get arrested for indecent exposure.”
Fortunately, that was the only disagreement between my Ladylove
and yours truly over the entire vacation. Unfortunately, and sadly, I’m
left to always wonder just how comfortable and “airy” such wardrobe
might have been.
Anyway, without going into specifics as to “how I spent my summer
vacation” allow me to highlight certain aspects of our journey.
Knowing Stu as well as I do, we had no embarrassment in asking,
searching, and “luckily” finding men’s rooms - be it in England,
Ireland, Scotland, or France. Sort of like our own private scavenger
hunt.
Let’s just say, we never met a toilet we didn’t like and after Rana
and Sharon wandered into another tourist trap looking for that perfect
T-shirt, we hunted for the nearest WC.
And yes, it is truly awe-inspiring to see the elegance and grandeur
of those magnificent Houses
of Worship, however (and
without sounding prejudicial,
or picking one religion over
the other) after a while, ALL
the churches looked the same.
Lastly, I realize that
notwithstanding all the
pictures taken by us (and the
constant ship photographers),
it is impossible to show how
special cruising is, but as this
photo demonstrates, there’s
nothing like two great friends
finding an empty bench.
Two couples, once again completing that once-in-a-lifetime
vacation. And in a couple of weeks, no doubt the travel editor will
announce where our next once-in-a-lifetime location will be.
An Ode to Baby Boomers
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
Ah, the Baby Boomer generation. An era of
peace signs, bell bottoms, colorful polyester
outfits, disco fever, and Lava Lamps
We were raised without the internet, but you didn’t miss what you
didn’t know. Remember these quirky things?
No smart phones with voice assistance in sight, we had to deal with
rotary phones. And don’t be in a hurry… it took a minute to dial the
corrects digits with your index finger, then curse under your breath
when the rotary dial got stuck at number 9. Let’s not forget the tangled
cords we had to contend with, either!
Our minds were blown when color TV first made its appearance.
Suddenly, the world was filled with rainbows, and our favorite
characters on screen looked
totally different in color!
However, we were still
adjusting those rabbit ear
antennae to catch the best
reception, and it was like
trying to find a needle in a
haystack. “Just a little to the
left…no, wait, go back…
oh you had it there! Okay,
freeze!”
Who could forget vinyl
records? The struggle was
real: dusting them off,
carefully placing the needle
without scratching the
surface, and trying to avoid
the wrath of our parents
when we accidentally
scratched their precious collection.
But hey, we had some memorable tunes like “Staying Alive” and
“Bohemian Rhapsody” that would get anyone grooving - even those
with two left feet! So cool!
As teenagers, our social life revolved around good old-fashioned
face-to-face interactions. No swiping left or right.
We actually had to approach someone and start a conversation.
It was exciting, small talk with sweaty palms and no emojis to hide
behind! We still prefer to talk more than text.
Remember the fashion trends? Lots of flair pants, platform shoes,
and hairstyles that defy the laws of gravity. We owned it with style! Or
we thought we did!
Growing up a Baby Boomer, we navigated through life with
determination and an upbeat attitude. So, to all my fellow Baby
Boomers out there, let’s raise a toast to our colorful past and embrace
the ever-changing present.
Peace and love, my friends!
A former schoolteacher, Dianne Sebis Hahn writes for children too.
Presently, Dianne has eight books available on Amazon.com.
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
“Baker’s Dozen” Commandments for Seniors
A 1. It’s okay to talk to yourself. There are
times when you need expert advice.
2. “In Style” are any clothes that still fit you.
3. You don’t need “anger management.” You
need people to stop pissing you off.
4. Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for idiots that
needs work.
5. The biggest lie you tell yourself: “I don’t need to write that down.
I’ll remember it.”
6. “On time” is when you get there.
7. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid, but it sure does muffle the sound.
8. It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10
minutes, then come out wrinkle free and 3 sizes smaller.
9. Lately you’ve noticed people your age are so much older than you.
10. Growing old should have taken longer.
11. Aging might have slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up.
12. “One for the road” means peeing before you leave the house.
And bonus commandment: You still have not learned to act
your age…and hope you never will.
*Are You Ready For Some Football? In honor of Publisher
Dan’s long time devotion to his New York Giants (but for other football
fans, just fill in your favorite team) I ask you to consider the following:
Q: What do the NY Giants and possums have in common? A: Both
play dead at home and get killed on the road!
Q: What did the NY Giants and the late Billy Graham have in
common? A: They both can make 60,000 people stand up and yell
“Jesus Christ!”
Q: What is the difference between a NY Giants’ fan (like Dan) and a
baby? A: The baby will stop whining after a while.
And my favorite: All of the Seven Dwarfs were marching through
the forest one day when they fell in a deep, dark ravine. Snow White,
who was following behind, peered over the edge of the steep chasm and
called out to her fallen comrades.
From the depths of the dark hole a voice returned, “The New York
Giants are Super Bowl contenders.” Snow White thought to herself,
“Thank God! At least Dopey survived!”

September 2023
The Lonely Wheelchair
By: Keith Bettinger / Guest Column
October 1, 2017 will always be remembered as
Las Vegas’ day of infamy. Death and injury
rained down on music fans from the height of
the thirty-second floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, stealing the lives of
fifty-eight people and causing injury to more than five hundred others.
Survival instincts and fear gripped the attendees and performers.
People began running away from the scene as well as through open
fields being used for parking.
For those that kept running, many wound up on the McCarran
Airport runways, taking cover in the adjacent rain channels. Others
attempted to hide at the scene under bleachers or canvas canopies.
The murderer
killed himself.
The shooting
stopped, and
the sun rose
that Sunday
morning. All
anyone could
see were the
remnants of the carnage that covered a crime scene; the likes of which
few law enforcement officers had ever seen.
It would take investigators weeks to photograph, recover, inventory,
process and eventually return items to the rightful owner or their
surviving family members.
The hard packed dirt just east of the stage area was filled with cars,
trucks, trailers, buses and motor homes. The cars belonged to the
concert attendees. The trucks, buses and motor homes belonged to the
performers and their crews.
For days these vehicles did not move as evidence technicians
processed the crime scene. Eventually the evidence was gathered and
the vehicles were released.
When the field was emptied of cars and trucks and the blood was
disinfected and cleansed from the ground, just one thing remained; a
overturned wheelchair.
Looking at the wheelchair in its lonely state left one wondering and
trying to answer so many questions. Who was the occupant?
Did the person make it this far on his own only to topple over? Was
someone pushing him? Did someone carry him to safety?
Was he pulled to safety behind a parked car? Did people, terrified and
fleeing, leave him to fend for himself?
Eventually the wheelchair was no longer alone. Two evidence
technicians walked across the field, righted the wheelchair and pushed
it into the evidence processing facility.
The wheelchair was no longer alone. It joined the other evidence
waiting to be processed. But it left one important question unanswered
- WHY?
Saturday Morning Serial
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
The year was 1956 and I was cast in this Saturday
morning NBC
serial called “Fury.”
The show was about a boy and his horse
(much like Lassie the dog) since the boy
and horse always came to someone’s
rescue! The series ran from 1955 to 1960.
In this episode, I played a little brat
who was not happy that my mother was
getting married to someone I did not like.
It also starred Peter Graves, who later was
remembered from the TV show Mission
Impossible.
In one scene, I started crying (what else
is new) and run away after trying to drive a
car which I smashed up and drove down a cliff. Enter Fury, the beautiful
black stallion and the little boy, Joey (played by Bobby Diamond, that’s
him in the photo with me) who miraculously bring me to safety.
About “Fury” the horse. His real name was “Beauty” and was mostly
called “Beaut.” He lived to be 29 and was trained by Ralph McCutcheon
who was like the Horse Whisperer.
People were always astounded how Beaut understood everything he
said. The horse was even trained to turn his head either left or right on
command.
He also played baseball! The horse would stand in center field and
when someone hit the ball, he would “fetch” it and take it to home
plate! He could pretty much do anything he was told to do, just by
listening to Ralph’s commands.
Beaut was also in other films, such as
Lone Star, Johnny Guitar and was the
featured black stallion in Giant.
There were actually four horses used
in Fury; one being a “stand-in”, one for
long shots and then one for just standing
still when there was a lot of dialogue going
on. Yes, even horses can sometimes get the
“star treatment” - especially when he was
the main star of the show!
At the start of each show, the announcer
would always say: “Fury...The story of a
horse and a boy who loved him.” Once again, I am so happy to have
been a part of such a sweet show.
Until next time, remember...The happiness of your life depends on
the quality of your thoughts.
Mold in Your Home?
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
received the following email from a Sun City
I resident.
As previously elaborated, a few years ago,
publisher Dan and I had to go
through the ordeal of mold
infestation in our home, so I
understand completely.
I wanted to share this message
with the hope that:
(a) you don’t have this
problem,
(b) that you might have a
suggestion I could pass along to
the writer,
(c) that you carefully check
your home and make sure you
don’t have the same issue hiding
in your walls.
I was out of town when my contractor found a slow drip in a
bathroom, which led to extensive black mold wallboard and carpet
damage. The cause was the shoddy “Shark Bite” fittings attached to
the Pec plastic pipes.
I have discovered at least another fitting similarly corroded and
about to fail. The remedy is to dig into every wall where there may
be a plumbing fitting and replace them with proper professionally
done CRIMP fittings, which do not fail like the “shark bites.”
For full remediation of the mold, 110’ linear feet of wallboard
will have to be removed (which includes interior and exterior walls
up to 4’ in height removal). Time and materials will be in the $60-
75,000 range.
The reason I am writing to you is that my guess is that ALL Sun
City Anthem houses have similar plumbing. This is not to blame
Primary care for 60+
that’s a natural fit.
At ArchWell Health, you’ll enjoy more time with
your doctor, same-day appointments for members,
and locations near you — making it a great place
to put down roots.
the SCA builder, because they were simply following code, which
originally installed shoddy “Kitec plumbing pipe”, which was
replaced with PVC pipe. However, the PVC pipe was joined with the
SHARK BITE fittings, which in the case of my house have or are in
the process of failing.
I admit I don’t know what to do
with this information.
How many of the 7,200 SCA
homeowners will be able to avoid
inevitable plumbing failure(s)?
I would guess there are many,
perhaps an overwhelming
majority, who cannot afford to
properly remediate black mold
due to an (inevitable) plumbing
failure - which is not covered by
insurance.
Do you have any suggestions?
Next Month: We believed the
guardianship scandal was finally behind us, but unfortunately, the
fight is back on! The Nevada Courts (and attorneys) are ignoring
the legislative reforms that were placed into law to protect people
from guardianship. The right to name our own Guardian is in
jeopardy.
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Don’t miss this PG13 action, adventure, thriller
directed by Christopher McQuarrie, starring
Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible – Dead
Reckoning Part One. Cruise valiantly
throws everything he’s got into the movie
including a lot of his trademark intense
running.
Cruise, as Ethan Hunt must track down
a dangerous weapon before it falls into the
wrong hands. With control of the future
and the fate of the world at stake and
dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a
deadly race around the globe begins.
Confronted by a mysterious all-powerful
enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than
his mission - not even those he cares about most.
With a terrific cast and some beautifully shot stunts, Mission:
Impossible – Dead Reckoning might be the best action movie of the
year.
Here are a few critics opinions:
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
Be Bear Aware & Other Tips
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
Throughout my life I
have spent summers
camping in our national
forests, so I’ve put together a FAQ column
dealing with bears and other camping matters.
Q: Should I obey the rule to not feed the
wildlife?
A: Yes, but if you happen to come face-to-face
with a grizzly sow and her cub while hiking you
may not have much choice since you will be the
main entree.
Q: Experts say to be on the alert for “bear
signs.” What do they mean?
A: One sign is bear scat. For example, if you see
poop on the trail and upon closer examination
notice it contains a set of dentures, chances are
they did not belong to the bear.
Q: Is bear pepper spray a good investment?
A: Yes but use caution. If attacked make sure
the sprayer is pointed away from you. Otherwise,
Yogi will get a good chuckle watching you
blindly running into trees before he enjoys a
seasoned feast.
Q: Is it safe to sleep in a tent?
A: Yes, but if your campsite has a bear-proof food storage locker I
September 2023
1. A few bag of tricks, high points stratospheric,
2. Stunts make it a good time but not enough to make it a great
movie or even a great mission;
3. Cruise performing stunts that would terrify actors half his age,
4. A combination of good script writing
and impressive stunts,
5. Represents the pinnacle of blockbuster
filmmaking, AND
6. The film makers wanted the audience
to experience the same way the actors did.
I didn’t know what was going to happen
next.
I am not a Tom Cruise fan but I really
enjoyed the stunts and the photography
of scenes from Venice, Rome, and the
Scandinavian landscape. Note that this film is 2 hours and 43 minutes
long without a bathroom break.
My movie score is 10 out of 10. The stunt on the train sequence alone
is worth the price of the movie. Check it out!
Renee Riendeau is the movie reviewer for The Vegas Voice. Renee can
be reached at rriendeau@aol.com and is anxious to hear from you.
recommend just sleeping in it.
Q: How do I distinguish a black bear from a
grizzly bear?
A: Easy, a black bear will simply eat you;
whereas a grizzly will first eat the black bear
then you for dessert.
Q: Should the grandkids and I be afraid of
getting West Nile?
A: If you’re going camping with the grandkids,
West Nile is the least of your worries. You are
much more likely to require medical attention
for injuries suffered from the kids flinging redhot
marshmallows around the campfire than
from mosquitoes.
Q: What is the most difficult part of camping?
A: For me, just getting to the campsite is the
hardest part since I apparently have a bladder
the size of a pencil eraser and get the urge to go
approximately every interstate mile marker.
And finally, Q: Is it legal for a guy to urinate
outdoors in National Parks?
A: Yes, as long as you keep it on a leash… No,
no wait… that’s for dogs.
Broccoli
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
Do you remember your parents telling you
that there would be no dessert if you didn’t
eat your vegetables? Did you push them under the
mashed potatoes or maybe the pieces floated off your plate on their own
and into the dog’s mouth?
We all had little tricks to get around dinner rules. And now, when I’m
regressing in my golden years, I cook things because I’m supposed to.
I don’t actually like it and I’m sucked back into that mindset of
getting away with pushing my veggies around the plate to try and make
them look smaller.
I have this vision in my head of my mother gently explaining how
important my vegetables are and trying to reason with me. I also
remember the words “your thumb is not a pusher” when I can’t always
get everything on my fork. I know she’s up there!
Let’s take a look at broccoli: It’s a pretty little veggie and looks great
in photos. In fact, it’s so distinctive that there’s a tree in the Vatican they
call a broccoli tree because it looks like a giant piece of broccoli. And
yes, it’s true.
Who likes broccoli? We know that President Bush (the 1 st one) hated
it. Maybe it was banned in the White House?
We also know that most restaurants don’t offer it as part of your
dinner when they can use overcooked mushy mixes instead. If you want
broccoli, you pay an up-charge.
Personally, I have gone from hating it to loving it and back to hating
it again. My guy loves it and drowns it in red wine vinegar so I make
sure to have Italian dressing on my salad when he eats broccoli so my
nose doesn’t get confused.
Cooking broccoli is an art. You put it in the steamer but timing it
out isn’t easy. If it’s just a small amount, adjusting the timer is tricky. I
wind up checking it every 5 minutes to make sure the color looks right.
I stick with easy stuff now. Peas, string beans, spinach and a few
others.
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Who put those bumps in your road? Take a
look in the mirror. It’s you!
Of course, you never
imagined your family
commitments, community activism, work
dedication, and overall desire to serve others
could be keeping you from serving yourself.
I hear you saying: “But I love my life,
and I love what I do. I am fulfilled by my
passions and service to others.”
Really? You’re fulfilling something, but
it’s probably not yourself and your own
needs.
Please don’t feel taken back by this
revelation.
There are many factors involved in why
those bumps are on your road. Think about the following. Do you
recognize any of these?
1. When you’re feeling needed, do you determine if the need is real?
2. When you want to use your extra time to help others, ask yourself:
How you could use that time for you?
3. You seldom say “no” to others. Why is it okay to let yourself down
Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer
By: Liz Breier / This & That
Labor Day has always signaled the end of
summer, but
for those of us
transplanted
from the colder climates like the
Midwest and Northeast it is an
adjustment each year to realize that
the summer is not over for the Las
Vegas valley.
While folks are having barbeques
and enjoying a holiday weekend, we
realize that the children have been
back in school for several weeks
already and yet the hot weather
continues. While many folks have
enjoyed the summer vacations and
visits with family and friends who
reside elsewhere, the Vegas valley is gearing up for holiday visitors and
convention season.
It is different from many other parts of the country where folks are
talking about changing leaves and winterizing their homes. We are still
enjoying sun and outdoor fun.
Yes, eventually we will need sweaters and jackets too, but not for
September 2023
frequently?
4. You support the vulnerability of others and tend to help them all
you can. Why do you feel selfish when you help and support yourself?
5. You have a lean on me mindset. You
feel it’s your responsibility to be responsible
for others.
6. What responsibility do you take for
your needs?
These are all wonderful attributes, but
are they giving YOU what YOU need?
It’s amazing that we give more love and
attention to others than we give to ourselves.
You can’t mouth the words: I’m being
overworked or overloaded when you’re
overworking and overloading yourself.
There will be bumps in the road—but you
shouldn’t be the one placing them there.
Simply put: Lose some bumps! Gain some YOU! Just get out of your
own way! Now that’s positive aging!
quite some time. The next major holiday will be Thanksgiving and one
wonders if it will be cooler or will we regret having to turn on the oven
to roast a turkey?
I wax nostalgic at this time of year.
I am not fond of the colder weather
yet to come and while it does not
compare to the horrible winters in
many parts of the country, it is still
something I dread.
I also tend to recall the joyous
carefree days of my youth spent in
sleep away camps and bike riding,
picnics on the big boulder in the
creek near my home, picking fruits
from the deserted farm nearby. Roller
skating (yes, I had to use a skate key),
amusement parks and of course the
pool and trips to the beach.
As a senior citizen I am no longer
skating or skipping rocks in a creek but can close my eyes and recall
those joyous days of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer and wish that
summer would always be here.
Nevada Offers Free Talking Books
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Being blind since birth hasn’t stopped Brett
Silver from devouring books and magazines
and bringing that simple
activity that so many take for granted to thousands
of Nevadans who find it impossible.
Silver administers the State of Nevada’s Talking
Book Service which provides an audio player and
media to the sight impaired and others unable
to use standard print materials due to visual or
physical disabilities. Silver emphasizes that the
service is available free of charge to Nevadans with
any condition “that prevents them from holding a
book, even arthritis and dyslexia.”
The State of Nevada Talking Books program is
administered by the state through funds provided
by the federal government. There is no charge to
use the service by those eligible.
“I grew up using the program,” said the 47-yearold
Silver. “I’ve never been able to see.”
Brett Silver
Silver worked his way up the ladder at the agency. Career opportunity
eluded him after earning a degree in communications at UNLV. “I
didn’t know that I was blind until I graduated from college,” he said of
the roadblocks encountered in his job search.
Those detours led him to plot an aggressive agenda of volunteerism.
“That gives you an opportunity to prove yourself.”
“As a blind person,” he says, “if you’re not
resourceful, you’re in trouble.” That path led to
volunteer hours rewinding cassettes for the Talking
Books program 23 years ago.
As leader of the agency’s local outreach program,
Silver maintains a busy schedule presenting the
program’s benefits to community groups, schools,
assisted living centers, at health fairs and “just
about anybody who invites me,” he said.
Silver began his 23 years tenure with the Service
as a volunteer “rewinding tapes” before technology
modernized the operation. “I grew up using this
program,” he said.
Today’s program provides an audio player with
rechargeable batteries, a voice activated user guide
and a solid state cartridge capable of holding up to
30 audio books. Publications can be downloaded to
the cartridge.
Awakening Brings Wow Factor
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Awakening at the Wynn is an 80 minute
dazzling production with the Wow factor. You
will find yourself immersed in a mythical world
where the heroine and her somewhat comedic helpers are on a quest.
They must confront the forces of Darkness to bring Light back to the
world. Through their adventures, Awakening explores the relationship
between Light and Darkness.
But this show isn’t about plot. This spectacular
five star presentation is a treat for all your senses
with every element that you want in a Vegas
production. With 1,600 seats, (the farthest 75 feet
from center stage) every seat has an unobstructed
view.
This is theater at its finest with groundbreaking
technology, incredible sound, a talented cast, original music,
and multiple levels of action. The choreography maximizes the visuals
that fill the 60-foot 360 degree prismatic rotating stage.
The 300 costumes are colorful, creative, and unique. The dance
includes multiple variations.
Creatures come down from the top of the room, sometimes
animatronic figures sometimes imagery - the result of lighting and
other unimaginable technology. The large-scale puppetry has audience
members wondering whether they are seeing a robot, person, illusion,
or video.
The original musical score balances tone and vibe. No earplugs
needed, but you hear everything clearly thanks to the custom sound
system at every seat creating a 3-D sound effect. Comfortable padded
assures that vertically challenged people sitting behind six-footers can
still see everything.
The outstanding cast of 60 includes dancers, singers, acrobats, and
magicians, plus puppets and projected characters. Beyond the dancing,
are gyrations on the flexible balance beam, baton
and fire twirling aerial gymnastics. There’s magic
and extraordinary creatures that will take your
breath away.
The show holds the kids’ attention along with
all others. Awakening is a modern age theatrical
experience with the most advanced technology,
incredible physical facility, and talented
performers. It’s Las Vegas!
There are locals’ specials until the end of September - tickets starting
at $79 and VIP packages. Call 702/770-4469. Mention SUMR23.
Tickets can be purchased at Awakening.com or visit the Wynn Box
was with a good friend and she started
I comparing how her husband treated her before
and after her marriage. I told a Tech Support
friend and he sent me this
analogy of marriage from a Tech Support point of view.
Dear Tech Support: Last year I upgraded from
Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct
slowdown in overall system performance, particularly
in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated
flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other
valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention
6.5, Personal Appearance 8.5 and Personal Hygiene 7.0.
He installed undesirable programs such as: NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0, and
Girls Gone Wild 7.5. Sadly Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and
House Cleaning 2.6 and Taking Out The Garbage 4.0 simply crash
the system.
Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 and Sweet Talk
7.2 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?
Signed: Desperate
Tech Support Response: First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0
is a “Limited Entertainment Package”, while Husband 1.0 is a
20
Dear Tech Support
September 2023
“Permanent Operating System.”
Please enter command: I thought you loved me .html and try to
download Tears 6.2. Do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.
If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then
automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.
However, remember, overuse of the Tears application
can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence
2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1.
Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that
will download Snoring Loudly Beta version.
Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances,
install Mother-In-Law 1.0 as it runs in the background
that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.
In addition, please do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0
program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband
1.0.
In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have
limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You
might consider buying additional software to improve memory and
performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0.
The Power of the Mind for Health & Longevity
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
The human mind is a remarkable tool capable
of influencing various aspects of our lives,
including our health and longevity. While
physical fitness and healthy lifestyle choices
are vital, harnessing the power of the mind
can pave the way to even greater well-being.
Let’s explore the profound impact of the
mind on our overall health and discuss
practical applications for leveraging its power
to promote longevity.
1. Mind-Body Connection: The mind
and body share an intricate connection.
Research has shown that our thoughts,
emotions, and beliefs can directly influence our physical well-being.
Positive thinking and maintaining an optimistic mindset have been
linked to a stronger immune system, reduced stress, and improved
overall health. By cultivating a positive mindset, we can enhance our
body’s natural healing abilities and promote longevity.
2. Visualization and Affirmations: Visualization and
affirmations have long been recognized as powerful techniques for
achieving desired outcomes. When it comes to health and longevity,
visualization can support the body’s healing process.
By vividly imagining vibrant health, vitality and longevity, the mind
can help create a blueprint for the body to follow. Affirmations, such
as repeating positive health-related statements can reinforce mental
programming and amplify the mind’s influence on our well-being.
3. Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can significantly impact our
health and longevity. The mind plays a crucial
role in managing and mitigating stress.
Practices like meditation, mindfulness
and deep breathing exercises can help calm
the mind, decrease stress levels and promote
emotional well-being.
4. Mindful Eating: The mind also plays
a vital role in our eating habits, which have a
profound impact on our health and longevity.
By practicing mindful eating, we can develop
a more conscious relationship with food.
Paying attention to the flavors, textures, and sensations of each bite
helps us fully experience and appreciate our meals.
Automotive Pay to Play
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Driving a car was a lot less expensive way back
when. And the way back when I’m referring
to is only a decade ago.
This time, though, the cost isn’t related to vehicle or gas prices.
I’m talking about what manufacturers are doing with new vehicle
subscriptions. It’s similar to your cable
company giving you the basics, but charging
extra for sports or news packages.
Because of the amount of software in new
vehicles, and over-the-air updates where
manufacturers remotely upgrade that
software, your car maker can turn certain
features on or off, depending on whether or
not you paid for them.
You want to remotely start your car from your phone app? That will
cost you. You want navigation that adds traffic and weather data? Extra
charge.
You want your vehicle to drive autonomously, pony up the bucks.
Heated seats? Upgraded radio? When does it stop?
In some BMWs there’s even a charge to unlock automatic high-beam
headlamps. Manufacturers estimate it could generate about $20 billion
in annual revenue from charging for these services.
Like most people, we hate being nickeled and dimed to death. Cox
Automotive did a study recently that found 75% of consumers aren’t
willing to subscribe to most vehicle features.
The reason you spend more for a luxury car is to have those features
included. Imaging paying $80,000 for your new car and you don’t get
all the functions unless you pay every month.
New Jersey recently adopted an assembly bill
that prohibits a motor vehicle manufacturer
or dealer from requiring subscriptions for
certain motor vehicle features and from
charging certain fees, excluding third-party
services such as satellite radio or in-vehicle
Wi-Fi.
If the automotive manufacturers keep this
up, more people will become favorable to a
general car subscription service, where you don’t even own the car and
just get whatever kind you want when you need it. The impact on car
sales would be devastating.
Once again, manufacturers are looking for the quick buck without
realizing the toll it could take on them years down the line.
BJ Killeen has been an automotive journalist for over 30 years.
She welcomes all questions and inquiries, and can be reached at
There are seniors who use a wheelchair,
scooter, or walker when outdoors who blithely
“furniture walk” when moving around their own
living quarters. When the doctor prescribed any of the above-mentioned
devices s/he did so to prevent you from using unstable furniture items
which may cause you to fall.
If you get dizzy or lose your balance, it’s essential
to use your walker indoors or spend a bit of money
perfecting your own support system.
Left and right posts of a door frame are
immovable and are suitable grab points. And for
increase safety, purchase grab bars for additional pause points at spots
where there’s nothing stable to cling to enroute to the bathroom or
wherever you make frequent trips.
The inner workings of a grab bar are deep and intended to be
completely safe for anyone less than 3oo lbs. Three full-size steel gab
bars are usually enough and should be installed in an upright position.
Add a Stander Couch Cane that stands directly beside your favorite
Last, but not least, use a Door Grabber at your exits to the front
Channeling
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Miracles are not contrary to nature but
only to what we know about nature. - St.
Augustine
Many people associate Channeling with a woo-woo phenomenon in
which people receive messages from another dimension and convey it
to their audience in an altered voice. The word Channeling is confusing
because it means different things to people.
Unsurprisingly, 29 similar practices in this field use Channeling to
access their results, including Clairvoyants, Trance Channelers, Outof-Body
Experiences, Remote Viewing, Intuition, Spiritual Healing, etc.
Channeling is not a recent phenomenon. We were all born capable of
sensing beyond the five senses.
Therefore, whether we know it or not, everyone intuitively channels.
Throughout their lifetime, we channel energy, abilities, feelings, ideas,
etc.
A channel is a passageway - a means of access to a thing,
communication, or an idea. It’s
where data not limited by our
conventional notions of space
and time can reveal itself.
Ultimately, it’s a means to
hear our inner guidance more
clearly, act upon our intuition,
and create our inner visions. So
where do these messages come
from?
In actuality, all the mechanics of Channeling are not yet understood,
nor have they established where the information is coming from.
Some Channelers believe their sources are non-human, angels,
extraterrestrials, etc.
Some think they’re communicating with ascended masters while,
Mediums believe they are communicating with deceased individuals.
The Institute of Noetic Science survey revealed where participants
thought their data came from:
a. 56% thought it was from their higher self.
b. 50% said the universal mind,
c. 47% answered the unconscious mind, and
d. Very few reported deities, ETs, spirits, or others.
Women had more robust and more frequent experiences than men.
Its believed that this is because of the Yin or feminine energy.
Channeling is a skill anyone can learn to do intentionally. We all
know inspiration when we feel it. It is a force that exhilarates us and
prompts us to do something.
The Daily Om says, “There are many ways to cultivate its presence,
journaling, scrapbooking, visiting thought-provoking friends, etc.
Finding what inspires you and consciously cultivating it will give you
access to new ways of thinking, energy you didn’t know you had, and
develop your self-appreciation.”
Legal Identity Theft!
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Did you know that when you vote, there is a
database created that catalogs your identity!
Republican and Democratic political consultants
are experts
at gleaning personal information
about you for use in targeting
their messages for you to vote for
their candidates.
It’s all legal! Most, but not all the
information, comes from public
records, such as your property
taxes, where you live, your age,
when you registered and how
often you vote.
They assemble this information
using data from secretaries of state
and disburse that information to
state parties and campaigns. No surprise there.
But what might surprise you is that they buy information from credit
agencies such as Experian. And you thought these credit agencies are
there to safeguard your personal information.
Not when there is money to be made. Morals take a seat behind greed!
Of course, there is a limit as to what they can purchase from these
agencies. They cannot disclose your Social Security number but they
can and do acquire data related to your age, income, race, ethnicity,
and consumer purchasing patterns.
There is also an information system where all notes from voter
canvassers affiliated with the Democratic party are compiled and
downloaded into a system called VAN. All those notes are downloaded
into that system and information disseminated throughout the country.
One critical element of that VAN system is that it includes how
voters feel about certain policies and whether they are for or against a
particular issue. That information
is then shared with the candidates
so that they can formulate their
message which, in turn, could tilt
an election in their favor. I am
sure the Republican party has a
similar system.
What this does is preclude
“good” candidates from offering
their solutions to the everyday
problems that reflect their moral
character. That’s what elections
are supposed to be about, aren’t
they?
But I digress. Money is power,
politicians are pawns of a system of greed - all at the expense of moral
leadership that we desperately need.
How to Dress Like a French Woman
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
Recently, I was perusing one of my favorite
fashion magazines and
a great article presented
itself about “how to dress
like a French woman.” Taking it one step further
and realizing that the article was geared towards
women over 50, it very much peaked my interest.
I’ve always been interested in the style of French
women, from my very first visit to France in the
early 1990s. Spending a day in the Cote d’ Azur,
a memory of a lovely French woman dressed in
a gorgeous light pink tweed jacket and matching
skirt with heels, left this Fashionista wondering
one question, “how do I dress like that?”
Perhaps not a jacket and skirt in our summer
days as temperatures rise into the triple digits, but
rather sticking to the old adage of “less is more” concept parallels how
French women dress.
A few takeaways from the article:
1. Personal style is more important than fashion trends. Staying with
more of a classic look and ensuring a perfect fit.
2. Knowing their color choices and styles that look best on their
body frame. Not having a closet full of clothes taking up space; rather
buying a few new pieces to enhance their timeless look throughout.
3. Jeans paired with a simple white blouse and
flats, oversized sunglasses and you’ve created the
perfect look for any woman over the age of 50.
4. Staying true to simple clean lines, from head
to toe is essential.
5. Finally, keeping makeup to a bare minimum
As styles consistently change each season, the
timeless and classic pieces remain true year after
year. Some of the most famous French women
to grace fashion magazine covers, include Coco
Chanel, Catherine Deneuve, Josephine Baker
(American born) and Brigitte Bardot to name a
few.
I like to think that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
was America’s version of a well-dressed French woman. Happy travels
wherever the roads lead you.
Need real beauty advice? You can usually get it
from someone
in your own friend
circle. When you get beauty information
from the internet, you never know if it’s
true or just a sales pitch.
If you get it from a friend, you
can usually trust it. Giving a friend a
compliment about make-up or fashion
often ends up with them sharing their
brand or designer.
Recently at the wedding for my best
friend of 60 years, I sat next to a woman
with the most beautiful skin. It was
flawless and looked like she had no
makeup on.
I told her I was in awe of how beautiful
her skin was. She immediately responded and after thanking me, said,
it’s not the skin, but the foundation.
This woman went on to share that the foundation was nothing
special and that she could achieve that look with any store-bought
foundation by using a foundation brush.
She quickly pulled out her phone, googled the brush to show me,
32
Getting Beauty Advice
September 2023
then explained that she used sponges in the past and never got the
same finish. She said using a brush was a game changer.
I’ve always just used my fingertips, so I
figured this was worth trying!
She shared that her favorite brush was
called a Kabuki foundation brush. I
found one on Amazon with a 4.6 rating
and over 36k reviews. I figured for $10 it
was worth a try.
I ordered the brush and will try it when
it comes. I’m not expecting the beautiful
skin of the woman that shared her secret
with me (as I have 20 years on her) but
if it helps (even a little) it will be a win.
However, the bigger win was making a
new friend. I paid a simple, well deserved
compliment and found I had so much
in common with a perfect stranger. We
talked all night, had a great time and have stayed in touch.
The moral of the story: if you need beauty advice, ask a friend, or
even a complete stranger, and make a new friend.
See You in September
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
think in lyrics. You may think it odd, but I have
I to live with it!
I hear a sentence and the words of a song
immediately come to mind. One year, I went off with my family for the
summer leaving my boyfriend behind.
He said, “See you in September.” Say “September” and the words to
the song come into my mind and stick with me all day.
You can say “knife” and immediately I start humming “Mack the
Knife.” Say “pickle” and I sing “My mom gave me a nickel to buy a
pickle.”
I hear the word “Cry” and I sing “Cry while your heart is breaking.”
My older sister and I used to sing it in falsetto outside the bathroom door
to torment our little
sister when she had
a temper tantrum. A
kid thing for sure!
Music is such an
important part of
my life, but I’m not
a singer, and that’s
being kind. It’s a
family curse we
blame on our mother.
She passed the nonsinging
gene to her
daughters, so be glad
you’re not around
when I burst into
song.
Going back to
thinking in lyrics,
recently someone
mentioned “basket.” My head went to “A tisket, a taskit, a brown and
yellow basket.” (And what on earth is a tisket, or a tasket?)
Anyway, somehow that became “biscuit” in my head. I hummed and
sang the words the whole day. So, of course, I baked some biscuits.
Could I use a mix? Nooooo! Here’s the recipe for a biscuit in a basket
– a massive cheese biscuit that looks great and tastes better.
Cheddar Biscuits: In food processor, pulse 1-3/4 cups flour, 2 tsp.
baking powder, 2-1/2 tsp. sugar, ¼ tsp. salt. Add 3 tbs. room temperature
vegetable shortening, pulse until combined.
Add 4 Tbs. COLD unsalted butter. Pulse 4-5 times. Add 8 oz. grated
cheddar cheese and 2 tbs. chopped chives, pulse 2-3 times. Add ¾ cups
WHOLE milk, pulse until just moistened, forming a shaggy dough.
Drop by very large scoop onto greased baking sheet 2 inches apart.
Bake at 400 degrees 15-20 minutes. Melt together 3 Tbs. butter, ½ tsp.
garlic powder and pinch of paprika for color. Brush tops while hot.
To Russia With Love
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker /
Out & About
Long ago in the crazy 80s, I took a cruise in
Northern Europe. It was a delightful trip, until
the morning when the Captain announced they had just received word
of availability of an optional trip to Moscow.
For the adventurous travelers this three-day excursion might be
really exciting, so I couldn’t wait to sign up. But it turned out to be
more than I bargained for.
We flew on a Russian jet from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We had been
told our transportation would be modern but I immediately noticed
that most of the seats on board were soiled and broken, and there were
no doors on the restrooms.
The only privacy offered was a knee-high curtain that swayed with
the movement of the plane. But to me the most alarming thing was
the condition
of my window.
It had
gaping holes
around the
glass that
revealed the
outside sky
and looked
like it might
blow out at
any moment.
The only good
news was that
with so many holes, I had fresh air throughout the flight.
Needless to say, I was greatly relieved when we landed safely, but it
was only an introduction to the tour to come.
Fortunately, most of the sightseeing was interesting, as we toured
the palaces of the tsars. And then we were bussed around Moscow to
see Red Square, and other historic sites like the “Five Sisters”, which
were famous high rises which house Russia’s most famous athletes and
celebrities.
It was the comments of our guide though which were the most
telling. She was a government official and she constantly bragged
about Russia, and how well the people lived.
But the more she spoke, the more she revealed, including the many
numbers of people yearly who were intentionally drowned in the Volga
River just before it was frozen over. She laughed as she explained this
was a traditional way to conceal the elimination of troublemakers.
Our excursion ended with another hair raising flight back to St.
Petersburg, where tales of our outings spread like lightning on the ship.
The captain assured us that there would be no more immediate visits
to Moscow.
Father & Mother Really Did Know Best
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
Yep, it was definitely a different time...a MUCH
better time, and I will debate that with anyone
who accepts the challenge!
Father actually did “know best” and 19 families
out of 20 had their fathers permanently
at home. Actually, Dad left every
morning for work and came home
every evening, normally to a wife, some
kids, and a homemade dinner - maybe
tuna-noodle casserole, with frozen peas
and some lemon meringue pie.
But first, USUALLY the boy met the
girl, the boy asked the girl out, the
boy and girl dated until they were out
of college (and by “dated”, I mean
USUALLY some kissing and light
“making out...no, USUALLY nothing further, believe it or not!).
Then, the boy called the girl’s parents and asked for her hand in
marriage, and then he proposed, and they planned a wedding, which
was USUALLY paid for by the bride’s parents, except for the rehearsal
dinner, which was USUALLY paid for by the groom’s family. Then, they
got married and THEN they indulged in a tad more than light “making
out...USUALLY.
Then, along came the children, one by one...whom they welcomed
with great joy, and love, and excitement.
A man normally taught his son lots of things in the 1950s: how to
catch a fish; how to save money; how to speak to their mothers; how
to shoot a foul shot; how to do algebra...sort of. He taught him how
to defend his sisters, girls in general...and his country; how to respect
his elders; how to build a birdhouse or a
model car; how to play Yahtzee with the
family, because family comes FIRST
and always will.
A father taught a son how to work
for a living, take responsibility for his
actions, and love his future children by,
first, loving their mother.
A woman and mother of the ‘50s
taught her daughters important things
as well: how to wear a cardigan with
a butterfly collar; how to apply makeup...very
lightly; how to speak to her
elders - and to everyone - with respect and a smile; how to work hard
at whatever they did, and not to accept less than the best from anyone
- especially themselves.
A mother taught a daughter how to play the piano; how to beat a boy
at ping-pong or golf...or running for Student Council President; how to
make a fabulous tuna-noodle casserole; how to cherish her children,
and how to make a house a home.
We played tag and hide-n-seek and kick-the-can. We played if-bikeswere-horses,
baseball and red-light-green-light...and lots of other
hyphenated games.
We loved lawn darts, we climbed trees, we scrambled all over
mountains of gravel and halfway-built houses. We ran lemonade
stands, we built forts, and we raced hard to the driveway when we heard
the popsicle boy come pedaling down the street.
We walked four blocks to school, unless it was raining. We spoke
respectfully to our teachers, we did our work...and we learned. We
learned that 4+3=7 (not 4+3=possibly 5, or 9, or whatever your
fragile psyche needs it to equal); we learned that “Columbus sailed the
ocean blue in fourteen-hundred-ninety-two” (and that he was a great
Italian explorer, navigator and colonizer; that he fought stubbornly for
the chance to find a “new world” and that if he hadn’t we might all still
live in Italy...not that I’d mind that).
We learned that Who is a subject, and Whom is a direct object or
an object of a preposition (and that Whattsup would be a totally
inappropriate - and punishable - offense when addressing a teacher.
OK, to us kids, maybe it didn’t always SEEM like a wonderful time,
but looking at our kids today, all on couches staring at phones - well,
there’s no question it was.
From Labor Day to Labor Month
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
Now that we have “weathered” an extremely
hot summer season, we can begin the
arduous task of repairing, replacing and
preparing our gardens for the fall and winter seasons ahead. We need
to move from a “Labor Day” to a “Labor
Month” and get back outside working and
helping our plants to grow and flourish.
To do this, our primary task is to apply a
good quality fertilizer to our soil to replenish
nutrients that have been utilized during
summer and to give a boost to our heat and
sun stressed plants. Nitrogen, phosphorus,
and potassium are the building block
nutrients that your landscaping will need.
In addition, apply specialized fertilizer for flowering plants, fruit
trees and palms. During the hot and dry summer, the pH level of the
soil can increase in alkalinity.
High pH levels can prevent roots from absorbing nutrients.
Therefore, an application of sulfur will help plant roots to function
effectively.
It is important that your irrigation system is properly working so
that nutrients are properly watered into the soil and reach the root
systems. Keep in mind that you must reprogram your irrigation clocks
to the “Fall Schedule” of three days per week.
To address the needs of specific plants in your landscape:
1. Prune off all dead and damaged parts of all plants. This will
encourage robust growth before the colder temperatures reappear.
2. Succulents need reduced amounts of water as the daylight hours
decrease and temperatures become cooler. Treat soil around agaves
with systemic insecticide to kill weevil eggs
that will hatch and devour the roots. Treat
prickly pear and cholla with malathion to
prevent cochineal infestation.
3. Spray bushes affected with spittle bugs
with an appropriate insecticide.
4. Fruit trees should not be pruned in
September unless damaged and deciduous
trees should not be pruned until their leaves
fall later in the season.
5. September is the last month this season to plant, shape or
“shave” palm trees. In addition, September is an excellent time to add
new additions to your garden.
United States Air Force Thunderbirds
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Native American mythology believes that the
mighty Thunderbird is the most powerful
spirit. Thunderbird wings
unleash thunder and Thunderbird is infinitely
the victor.
With late summer holding with little break, the
sky was clear reflecting the sun off the tarmac,
triggering heat sparkle as the fighter jet dropped
gracefully from the sky until the tires touched the
runway with a screech and a wisp of exhaust.
Las Vegans often see the planes flash by high
above in a blur of red, white and blue markings
and hear the thundering low overhead earsplitting
roar. The community is home to the United States
Air Force aerobatic demonstration team the Thunderbirds, nicknamed
“T-birds.”
September 18 th marks the 76th anniversary of the United States Air
Force. This is the official day the air defense organization was created
by President Truman in 1947 with the signing of the National Security
Act.
The Thunderbirds were created in 1953 and is one of the oldest
squadrons in the Air Force. The Thunderbirds perform aerobatic
formation and solo flying in specially marked aircraft and tour within
the United States and worldwide..
Since 1953, they have flown in front of more than 300 million
people. Previous to their creation, the United
States military had a nominal Aero Squadron air
demonstration team that formed at Kelly Field,
Texas, in June 1917.
Based at Nellis Air Force Base since 1974, the
Thunderbird Squadron is the third-oldest formal
flying aerobatic team (under the same name) in
the world, after the French Air Force Patrouille de
France formed in 1931 and the United States Navy
Blue Angels formed in 1946.
If called upon, the Thunderbirds aerobatic team
can be incorporated into an operational Air Force fighter unit and
rapidly be combat ready.
Within the Thunderbird airplane hangar at Nellis Air Force Base
is the Thunderbird Museum which documents through artful displays
the Thunderbird 70-year history.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.
“
Systemic” is a popular term of late, and it
usually points to racism. However, there is
such a thing as “Systemic
institutional discrimination.”
It causes inferiority and marginalization of
established groups of people. People that, over time,
have morphed into distinct cultures due to their
common experiences - such as war veterans.
The considerations and ideas of what a veteran
is, and how he or she behaves after going to war,
has created a whole set of skewed everyday thinking
patterns. (“Baby killers” was a popular mindset
regarding Vietnam vets, remember?)
At a systems level this has stigmatized all veterans,
and the generalization has prevented society from
viewing and addressing veterans right where the true needs are. With
veterans, it comes down to educating people just like systemic racism.
There’s a critical need to educate everyone on what makes veterans
the special people they are and how they are challenged, especially with
PTSD.
After Vietnam, “war stress” became “PTSD.” During WWI and WWII,
it was called shell shock or combat fatigue; during the Civil War it was
known as “Soldier’s Heart.”
38 September 2023
Systemic “Veteranism”
In the early ‘70s the study and treatment of war stress took a positive
turn by the VA. They found that veterans develop PTSD more frequently
than the general population because they are exposed to a larger range
of traumatic experiences during their service.
Combat exposure has traumatized combatants
from time immemorial, leaving them struggling to
cope with many emotional issues.
Explaining in simple terms, PTSD materializes as
a means for the brain to make a heroic attempt at
healing itself. It is an impulse to survive, and humans
have been equipped with an urge to survive.
However, with the heavy impact of traumatic
episodes, the brain thereafter doesn’t always get things
right. This is where therapy comes into play: to help
the individual sort things out and get back on an even
keel.
A good point to quell any stigma is: Post-Traumatic
Stress is NOT a disorder. Quite in reverse, PTS(D) is a normal reaction
to an abnormal set of circumstances, and war is certainly an abnormal
activity in which humans may engage themselves.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. Readers can contact him at skysoldier503@
High Maintenance
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
This will be short and sweet because I must run
to a doctor’s appointment.
I don’t remember if it’s the dermatologist or the
ophthalmologist. I’ll have to consult my calendar, so I don’t wind up
waiting an hour in the wrong office.
I also have to check my wallet to
make sure I replaced my insurance
card after the last doctor’s visit, and
that I have cash, check, or credit card
for the co-pay. And I’d better verify the
status of my underwear just in case
today’s appointment turns out to be
with the gynecologist.
I used to look forward to this time
of the year. I happily anticipated the
cooler weather and all the upcoming
holiday festivities. Now fall has a
whole new meaning. It has turned into Check-up Season.
My car also receives regular check-ups. But I take it to one place, and
they examine all the moving parts.
People, on the other hand, are required to see specialists. Hence, I’m
spending the equivalent of an entire month rotating among medical
offices.
I don’t think it’s my imagination, but with every passing year the
maintenance lists seem to grow longer. This year I added a retinologist,
who, after the exam, suggested I see my ophthalmologist who forwarded
me to an optometrist.
I also added a cardiologist. Or was that the year before?
Some visits I don’t mind so much. For example, seeing
the dermatologist is definitely less stressful than a visit to the
gastroenterologist. After all, the only
preparation required is that I remove
my makeup, rather than the contents
of my intestines.
The radiologist’s office was kind
enough to send me a letter to remind
me it was time for my annual
mammogram. I’m not sure whether
I will squeeze that in (pun intended)
before or immediately after I see the
dentist.
I also have a podiatrist on the
payroll, but he had his turn last
month. The periodontist shall have to wait until next month. And I
better get to that orthopedist before he leaves for vacation.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining, only observing. I’m
grateful that, so far, all outcomes have been good.
And I shall continue to do what it takes to keep it that way. I just
don’t understand how someone who feels so young could have body
parts that are apparently so old. (Except for my left shoulder, which is
brand new!)
A Birthday Surprise
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
My mind could not process what my eyes were
seeing. I’ve never had that experience before.
I was in a beautiful pub in the heart of London
on my 70 th birthday trip along with Sharon,
publisher Dan and his Rana.
I was looking forward to a traditional Fish & Chips dinner and then
we would be off to our next adventure in London, a tour of Buckingham
Palace. This was all in advance of our
12-night Princess cruise around the
United Kingdom
and Ireland.
I previously
invited some
family members along
for the cruise, but except for
Sharon’s brother and sister-inlaw,
all politely turned me down. I especially wanted my cousin Steve
and wife Betsy to join us.
I don’t get to see them
all that much since they
live in Minnesota and
I’m in New York. Steve
said it wouldn’t work out.
I was disappointed but
understood.
So, there I was, waiting
to order dinner when
Sharon announced
another couple we were
with were walking into
the pub to join us for
dinner. My back was to
the entrance, and I didn’t
pay much attention.
Instead of this couple
walking through the door,
my cousin Steve and wife
Betsy just ambled into the pub. To my complete surprise, Steve and Betsy
made plans to do their own tour of the UK and ended up in London to
surprise me for my birthday.
They had arranged all the logistics with Sharon and kept this secret
from me for weeks. When they came to my table my mind just did not
comprehend what I was seeing.
Good thing the pacemaker kicked in, or my heart would have skipped
a few beats.
With all the great times we had on this UK/Ireland cruise, the best
part turned out to be the surprise visit by my cousins and the chance to
spend two more days with them before the cruise.
And this is what travel is all about - visiting wonderful places with
family and friends. Truly the trip of a lifetime.
It’s Zumba Time!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Things are pretty much back to normal after
3+ years post-COVID. By the time this
column is published, I will have traveled to my
Zumba Convention.
First one since 2019 due to pandemic and back surgery. I had
attended every one since 2008 when I became a Zumba instructor.
I’m so thrilled to meet up with old friends, meet new ones, receive
new trainings and refresh my Zumba brain! I will be energized to bring
new music and
choreography
to my classes.
So how will I
“pace” myself
during four
solid days of
dancing from
9am - 6pm and
have energy
for parties
at night? I
have learned
throughout
the years to
take time to
relax between
sessions, take
copious notes
and hydrate!
A glass of
wine with dinner also helps. LOL!
Eating nutritious foods is a must! I pack lightly, only carry-on and
one backpack for the week of trainings.
I purchase dried foods, bring energy packets, energy bars and build
up my immune system by boosting with vitamin C for about a week
prior to the trainings. Snacking on fresh fruits during the day and
then a full dinner after all the dancing during the day keeps my energy
elevated.
Fortunately, our convention is near many grocery stores to purchase
fresh goods.
At my “young” age of 78, I can keep up with all the younger Zumba
instructors. Yes, 78 is only a number and I feel so much better now than
I did in my 50s or 60s.
Amazing, isn’t it? My goal is to teach Zumba as long as I’m physically
able and continue with my healthy style of living.
In my next column, I’m sure I’ll have many stories to share with
you. Until then, be safe, stay cool in this Vegas heat and hydrate.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
Mary Richard is a long term supporter of senior fitness. She
teaches Zumba, toning and dance classes throughout the Las
Vegas Valley. She can be reached at zumbaqueen@cox.net.
How Stress Can
Exacerbate Diabetes
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Over 37 million people in the United States suffer
from diabetes, a condition where the level of
sugar in the blood is too high. Two hormones, insulin and glucagon,
work to balance the blood sugar level and keep it from becoming too
high or too low.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune
system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin so the
body cannot regulate blood sugar properly. Type 2 diabetes is a modern
disease where the cells become resistant to the effects of insulin.
Using the analogy of a key (insulin) which can open locks (cells
which allow insulin to enter), in type 1, there are not enough keys to
open the locks. In type 2, there are plenty of keys, but the locks are
broken, and the keys no longer work.
There are a number of other factors which can affect the blood sugar
level. Stress is one such factor.
When a person is stressed, the brain tells the hormonal system to
release cortisol and glucocorticoids from the adrenal glands. This is
part of the fight or flight response seen during stressed states.
The cortisol and glucocorticoids then send signals to the liver to
release sugars that have been stored there. This sugar is then dumped
into the blood stream. This process, known as gluconeogenesis, further
increases the level of sugar in the blood which further exacerbates
diabetes.
Cortisol and glucocorticoids also have another deleterious effect. The
purpose of insulin is to help send sugars into the cells where the cells
can use it as an energy source that helps them function correctly.
The cortisol and glucocorticoids decrease cells response to insulin
so that the sugars in the blood are taken into and used by the cells less
efficiently. This makes the cells of the body function less efficiently and
further raises the blood sugar level.
Ticket to Paradise
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
What impressed me most was the wall-to-wall
mattress in the back of The Love Cloud’s
Cessna 414 aircraft.
“Captain Tony,” the Chief Pilot of The Love Cloud, soars 5,280 feet
(one mile) above Sin City while frisky fliers make whoopie in the
passenger cabin.
“Most tell us it’s the best sex of their lives,” Captain Anthony Blake
said about those who join the Mile High Club on his fleet of erotic
vessels. “Flying on The Love Cloud provides them with a unique sensual
experience, even if they’re just looking out to the stars and cuddling.
Let’s face it, the world changed and we need love more than ever.”
The aircrafts swing
couples around the Las
Vegas skies, climbing
to new heights by
enjoying romantic
flights. Captain Tony
said 90% of his randy
riders are 55 and older
and enjoy “connecting
with one another,
feeling what they once
felt for each other.”
His amorous air
tour company helps
couples pop their corks
when celebrating weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day,
and special occasions with champagne, one to three course meals,
chocolates, and cake. You can also opt for limo service, music, balloons,
and sex position pillows.
Past two tan leather seats lay red satin sheets atop a custom made
foam mattress, as well as soft towels and cleansing materials. Plus,
there’s no turbulent performance anxiety because the pilot is hidden
behind a secured curtain and is equipped with a noise-canceling
headset.
During day and night flights from the North Las Vegas Airport you
can reach the “Big O” when overlooking Red Rock Canyon, Hoover
Dam, Lake Mead, and the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.
“One frequent flyer couple took the flight three times in a row,”
Captain Tony said, “but then they took a fourth to actually look out the
window to enjoy the sensational views.”
The Love Cloud offers three packages: Silver – 45 minutes, Gold – 1
hour, and Platinum – 90 minutes. Back on the red-carpeted tarmac,
you’ll get a Mile High Club VIP certificate to remember your bon voyage.
