Are Solar Panels Right For You?
Solar panels have become more popular than ever! With more affordable installaon and material
costs, many people are installing solar panels on their homes. It might be worth considering if you
want to offset some of your energy costs.
The Ease of Installaon
Solar panels sll require expert installaon, but the process has become much more
straighorward. A good installaon technician will be able to walk you through the process so that
you understand the pros and cons of your investment.
You will want to consider the placement of your home with respect to sun exposure. South-facing
homes are ideal, but other posions can also work depending on the slope and direcon of your
roof. The shade from tree cover may also play a part in the placement.
Return on Investment
The average return on investment (ROI) for solar panels in the United States is roughly 10%. The
ROI isn’t the same as the payback period. That’s part of it, but the rate of return and the cost
savings for energy should also be factored into the decision.
Rebates and Tax Credits
For solar power systems installed between 2022 and 2032, tax credits are 30%. You must meet
certain residenal requirements, so check with your tax accountant before signing a contract to
learn more. You can also review the federal guidelines for more details.
Purchase? Lease? Power Purchase Agreement? Or?
There are many types and structures of "Solar Agreements" and you really need to understand
what you are agreeing to before signing on the doed line... I oen find when assisng clients
with the sale or purchase of a home with solar panels that they don't know what type of contract
they have signed - it is VERY important to understand the opons, and to understand the terms of
your agreement. You will need to know what type of agreement it is, what is and is not included
in the price, warranty & maintenance informaon, and more.
Need help?
I will be happy to answer any quesons that I can, and to direct you to trustworthy experts for any
quesons that I can't answer (people who aren't just looking to sell you something...). I'm here to
assist you with all of your real estate needs!
Some Assembly Required
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Damn right I’m useless.”
That was my short, annoyed, and rather
accurate reply to my Rana as she emphasized my
mechanical abilities. In my defense, she
(and everybody else that knows me) are
aware of my “challenged” skills.
My PILL (partner in love and life)
and I were spending a lovely Sunday at
Town Square last month. The sun was
shining, the birds were singing and after
a wonderful lunch, while holding hands
like young newlyweds, she suggested we
visit The Container Store.
Rana loves that place since it sells
everything you never knew you needed -
but was now a “must-have and how did
I ever live without it” necessity.
This particular item was a mobile 3 drawer file cart. And of course, it
was “exactly” what she needed.
When I went to place the item in her shopping cart, I froze. The box
stated the 3 most frightening words in my vocabulary: “Some Assembly
Required.” “Forget it” I said as I started to return it back in the aisle
“Don’t be ridiculous” my Rana confidently assured me. “We can put
it together in no-time.”
Upon returning home and while Rana carefully read the directions
(it even has diagrams, she exclaimed!) I struggled (and began using
certain words that are not fit for this publication) just to open the
cellophane packages containing the numerous screws and plastic parts.
And then the “fun” began.
As she pondered “how” and “why” about these things, Rana
eventually noticed my frustration and disgust. No doubt if she took my
blood pressure, 911 would have been dialed and an ambulance would
have been summoned.
Compounding my increasing anger as to how I got sucked into this,
my Ladylove was having her difficulties figuring out why the drawers
were not coming together as easily as she believed.
What Do
You Think?
Do you agree with our columnists?
Did anyone get you angry, make
you think or simply put a smile
on your face? Please tell us by
forwarding your comments,
thoughts or suggestions to Publisher
Dan at: dan@thevegasvoice.net.
Oh, and it certainly didn’t help that her dogs were scampering around
the room with my transgender cat Eli deciding to plop herself/himself
(whatever) on top of the instructions pages while playfully swiping the
parts with her paws.
When she asked what “we were doing wrong” I (not so) “gently”
reminded her of my limitations. Next
thing you know, we were having a
“discussion” in not so hushed and
loving tones.
Rana thereafter mentioned her BD
(before Dan) long-ago single days when
she used to do all this stuff by herself.
I immediately suggested she return to
those days of yesteryear since I quit -
and if it was up to me, I’d grab all the
“gosh darn” pieces and chuck it in the
garbage,
I walked out of the room but to her
wonderful credit, after about 30 minutes,
she was able to figure it all out and assemble it. Not sure if the credit
is for her persistence or stubbornness but, bottom line, she got it done.
And to show readers how lucky I am to have her in my life, my Rana
even asked if I wanted to go back to the store and purchase another one
for my office. You can only imagine how fast this publisher thanked her
for the thought… and declined.
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Sun City Singles Dilemma: A 65-year-old
Sun City widow went out on a blind date with a
75-year-old man. Returning to her daughter’s
house around 10:30 she was quite upset.
“What happened?” asked the concerned
daughter. “I had to slap his face three times.” She finally admitted.
“You mean…?” fumbled her daughter. “Yes“ she answered. “He fell
asleep three times!”
And the Lord said: A man on his motorcycle was riding along the
California beach when suddenly the sky opened up above his head and,
in a booming voice, God said, “Because you have tried to be faithful to
me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.”
The biker pulled over and said, “Lord, build a bridge to Hawaii so I can
ride over anytime I want.”
The Almighty replied, “Your request is materialistic. Think of the
enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking, the supports required
reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would
take!
“Of course, I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for
worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could
possibly help mankind.”
The man thought and thought about it for a long time. Finally, he
said, “God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women. I want to
know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the
silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say nothing’s
wrong, why they snap and complain when I offer to help, and how I can
make a woman truly happy.” God replied, “You want that bridge with two
or four lanes?”
And that’s how the fight started: My wife told me that at my age,
I should just embrace my mistakes…so I gave her a hug.
And finally: I bought my Mom a mug which says, “Happy Mother’s
Day from the World’s Worst Son.” I forgot to mail it, but I think she
knows

My Mum
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
She was a beautiful woman, inside and out. This
woman I called Mum was smart, funny, brave
and always ready to take off on new adventures.
Her first adventure that I was part of was during World
War II when the British Government came up with
several ideas to move young children out of “harm’s
way.” One of those ideas was to send some children who
had relatives in the United States to sit out the war in
America.
Doing that meant volunteers were needed to
accompany and care for those children until the
transfer to family members could be made. My mother
was one of those volunteers, taking along my 4 year old
brother and her yet un-born child … me.
Delivery made, we (now) three and her fellow
volunteers headed home, unaware that another
“adventure” was one day away. As their ship passed the
point of no return, December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was
attacked and America entered the war.
Once safely back on British soil, my mother (who was an
incredible seamstress) began designing and sewing to support us while
the war raged on while my dad was serving King and country.
It’s been said that small women are tough, and that she was. At 4’11
she was ready to take on the world. Not the type to rant and rave when
angry, her left eyebrow would shoot up and we kids knew to shut our
mouth and stay out of her way.
Most of the time however, without even trying, she would be so funny.
A perfect example was one evening.
My father passed away in 2003, and we opted to sell
their home. It meant mum would move in with me so
that I could take care of her. After looking at several
options, we chose Sun City Anthem to have a home
built.
Once we settled in, I asked my mother who was 90
years old, if she felt like going out to dinner and then
perhaps, we could meet some ladies and get into a card
game at the Center. She looked me right in the eye
and said, “Hell no, lets go to the Mirage, these
people are far too old!”
Then there was the day that I walked into the house
with the mail, separating hers from mine. I placed hers
in front of her and walked into my office.
A few minutes later she pushed her little walker into
the room, her face flushed with excitement and said, “Look at this,
I’ve won the Publisher’s Clearing House thing”
I took the papers from her hand and quietly pointed out that the
letter said, “you might have won.” That darn eyebrow went up as she
stared at me, and as she walked away, mumbled, You don’t know what
you’re talking about, I WON!
Mum turned 92 in January 2005, and a month later I lost her. I hope
she knew that love is eternal, and I miss that beautiful woman every
single day.
As I think of my own beautiful Mum, Publisher Dan
and I wish moms everywhere a wonderful Mother’s Day
Mom Wasn’t Royaly, But She Ruled the Roost
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
Last year, the death of Queen Elizabeth II
dominated the news. Then in March, there
appeared the headline, “Royals
share photos to mark first U.K. Mother’s Day without
late Queen.” Mother’s Day in the U.K. occurred on
March 19th.
As Mother’s Day is celebrated this month, it
triggered thoughts of my own mother and related
childhood memories, many of which I am sure are
like others of my generation.
While my dad worked as a police officer, it was
Mom who walked the beat at home 24/7. Back
then everything Mom did was by hand: laundry,
cooking…and discipline.
My mom, like many others at that time, never got
a driver’s license. Day trips were by city bus, and those were exceedingly
rare since dragging five little boys downtown on a bus hardly qualified
as a “fun outing.” So, Mom was stuck at home which had to be rough
on her.
The sharp distinction between the lavish lifestyle of British Royalty
and that of my mother could not have been clearer. However, in the
1950s there did appear to be one chance to close that gap at least
temporarily - on the TV show “Queen for a Day.”
As many of you recall, the show opened with host Jack Bailey asking
the audience (mostly women) “Would YOU like to be queen for a
day?”
Following emotional interviews of several women,
the host asked each contestant what she needed most
to improve life for her and her family if she were to
win the title. The winner was then chosen based on
audience applause.
As I recall, my imagination ran wild as “Pomp and
Circumstance” played, a red velvet robe and glittering
crown were placed on the sobbing “Queen,” and was
handed a dozen roses while sitting on her throne.
As the host displayed all the prizes, including fancy
appliances, expensive clothes, cosmetics, or jewelry,
even exotic vacations, all I could think about was, “If
only Mom could win!”
Well, Mom never got the chance to be Queen for a Day. But every
Mother’s Day, my brothers and I remember that Mom will always be
Editor’s Note: Bill Fayne died March 29.
Fayne and Clint Holmes forged a lifelong
friendship
that began as college roommates
and endured for six fulfilling
decades. Here Holmes shares
Bmemories of his friend.
ill Fayne was my best friend for
almost 60 years. We made a lot
of music during those years and we
played a lot of tennis together.
The most aggressive I ever saw
Bill was when he would come
barreling in to try to return a short
shot at the net. That’s where he got
the unlikely nickname “Freight
Train Fayne.“
Bill’s real power came from his
My Best Friend - Bill Fayne
gentleness and his passion. So many people respected his musicianship
because of the way he always respected both the music and the
musicians he was playing with.
So many singers, young and old, loved working with him because he
never sat in judgment. He always offered encouragement.
Bill was a true accompanist. He never tried to steal a moment from
the artist he was playing for.
But he knew when and how to push to get the best performance from
them.
A Finale For the Ages
I was the beneficiary of all those traits for most of my career. It would
take pages and pages to share our musical experiences but suffice it to
say I would not have the career I have without him by my side.
Since his passing I find myself thinking “I’ve gotta call Billy” several
times a day . Sometimes it’s to
discuss something his beloved
Yankees or Buffalo Bills did or
didn’t do.
Often to discuss politics (which
we always agreed on). Sometimes
we’d talk about the newest
Broadway play, or the newest
recipe he wanted to come over and
cook, or the exploits of our kids,
grandkids or even our dogs.
Billy was the best friend I ever
had. He was one of a kind and he
will never be replaced.
When I think of how quickly 60
years of friendship went by, I guess
it does kind of feel like a speeding Freight Train .
I will hold on to the memories, there are enough to last the rest of
my life.
Presents the
A
tremendous finale at our March Afternoon Affair at Sun City
MacDonald Ranch. A standing ovation “thank you” to the
performers (left-to-right) Rita Lim, Patty Powers, Rene Hale, Katy
Monroe, Tony Arias and our co-hosts Evan Davis and Jonny Bird.
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
was visiting my daughter and grandchildren
I in Colorado Springs. I watched as she worked
so hard to
meet all
of her family’s needs.
It also struck me that her
family didn’t have a clue as
to how hard she worked and
sacrificed, (without a word)
to meet those needs. It then
reminded me that I did the
same thing!
I finally realized I was
invisible when I saw the blank
stares, the lack of response to
a question, the way one of the
kids will walk into the room
while I’m on the phone or even
in the bathroom to ask to be
taken somewhere or do something.
Inside I’m thinking. “Can’t you see I’m busy?” Obviously, not.
I’m invisible. The Invisible Mother. Some days I am only a pair of
hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you find this?
May 2023
Some days, I’m not even a human being…..I’m a clock to ask,
“What time is it?” “When do we have to be there?”
I’m a Detective…”Where is the remote control?” “Where are my
socks?”
I’m a Taxi Driver…”You
have to pick me up from
practice at 5:30…Oh, and you
have to take Kristen home too.”
It seems like just yesterday
that these were the hands
that once held books and the
eyes that studied Art and the
mind that graduated and had
a successful job – but now
they had disappeared into the
peanut butter and dirty laundry
never to be seen again. She’s
going..going..gone.
One day, my good friend,
who led a life like mine, but
discovered she could hide in a
special place in the garage to escape her children and enjoy her passion
- reading, gave me a book of the great Cathedrals of Europe. She said I
would find my value and greatness in this book.
At the time, I had no idea what she meant. After reading the book (in
my own special place I found in the garage) and devouring it a
second time, my life became full of pride and beauty.
It told of all the workers and artisans who sacrificed daily to
build these magnificent cathedrals and expected no credit. They gave
their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.
No one can say who they were because there is no record of their
names.
The book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while
being built and watched as an artisan carved a beautiful bird inside of
a beam. He asked why he was spending so much time carving that bird
since it will be covered by the roof, and no one will ever see it?
He replied, “Because God sees.”
It made me realize that the sacrifices I make every day, even when
no one around me sees them, no act of kindness I’ve done, no sequin
I’ve sewn on, no cupcake I’ve baked, no lack of sleep watching over
my ill child, no giving up my buying myself new shoes so my daughter
can have ballet lessons is too small for ME to notice and smile over.
I am building a great cathedral, but I can’t see right now what it
will become.
And one day, the world will marvel, not only at what I and other
Mothers have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world
by the sacrifices of the “Invisible Mother.”
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Invisible
Mothers.
Anne Baxter
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
This month I’d like to write about Anne
Baxter. Many of you
will remember her from
“All About Eve” as well as her Oscar winning
performance in The Razors Edge, with Tyrone
Power, or perhaps from Cecil B. DeMille’s The
Ten Commandments.
I remember her as a beautiful lady - both
inside and out. I was lucky to work with her
in an episode of The Zane Grey Theater called
“Star over Texas” back in the fifties.
When I first met her, she gave me a big
welcoming hug - which always set the tone for
the first day of filming. She had a warm and
sweet smile and I felt comfortable with her
right away, although I must confess, I actually
didn’t know just how famous she was.
Anne exuded grace, charm, and warmth.
I liked her right away. She was a wonderful
actress and more importantly, a lovely lady.
Sadly, she died in 1985. Baxter was only 62 - which now seems so
young to me. I’ll never forget her.
As a child performer, I wasn’t always aware of just how famous some
of the people I worked with really were! For me, many of the stars I
worked with were just ordinary people.
It wasn’t until I became an adult and
reflected on my career that I realized how
fortunate I was to have worked with so many
wonderful and famous people. I am most
grateful for your numerous emails stating that
you like that I always have something nice to
say about the people I’ve worked with (rather
than bad-mouthing them) but the truth of the
matter is that it’s true!
In fact, for the most part, it seemed the bigger
they were, the nicer they were. Case in point:
Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, Kirk Douglas,
Loretta Young and Lou Costello to name
just a few.
Until next time, remember sometimes the
reason it’s hard to be happy is because we refuse
to let go of the things that make us sad.
What Work Ethic?
By: Liz Breier / This & That
Am I imaging things? Have folks really become
less interested in working hard, proving
themselves, “climbing
the ladder” or for that
matter, working at all?
What am I referring to? Where should I
begin?
Been to a pharmacy recently? Short staffed
and long lines. How about a restaurant?
Many seem to be taking longer to serve food
or your order arrives but not as requested. And
then there is the lack of training.
Used to be ladies were served first, or at least,
the server would walk around the table to put
your entrée in front of you – not pass it to you across the table.
Then there is the on-line experience. Why do I feel many of you
reading this are now shaking your heads in agreement?
Recently I purchased something that had 2 defective parts – almost
a month of emails back and forth – days go by with no response after I
provide the requested information, and still no resolution.
A second defective product is reaping the same result – occasional
emails requesting details and serial numbers… then crickets. I just
returned the item. But that’s not the way to do business.
Have you tried calling a medical office for an appointment lately?
I was shocked to get a recording that they will call me back within 24
hours – but you know the rest… that never happened.
Even in the education system there is
a shortage of teachers. Some schools are
employing full time teachers that have a
“sub” license – meaning they qualified after
a background check to be a substitute teacher
but with no real education or experience in
the field.
I am not inferring that every pharmacist,
educator, restaurant server or office worker
is incompetent and not a diligent worker. I
am saying that there seem to be fewer of those
hard-working individuals and the consumer is the one that pays the
price in diminished confidence and enjoyment.
I do know, for sure, that when we were younger, we worked hard and
never thought of being anything but cordial and helpful to a customer,
patient, or consumer.
Blowin’ in the Wind
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
What wind? Do we have wind? Just another
day in Las Vegas sitting behind glass patio
doors watching our outdoor furniture go flying
by.
Other days I find myself hugging 73 pounds of dog because she
hears thunder 25 miles away with the wind. Her majesty has broken
the record for holding it, so she doesn’t have to brave the elements.
The wind seems to be at its best the night before trash pick-up. The
bins flip open, and all the coyotes know what night it is. That makes for
double fun the next morning.
My deliveries of small items always seem to arrive on windy days
too. The large cartons of dog food wait until the rain hits but little stuff
bounces along the rocks until I run around and catch it.
Wind in southern Nevada has a character all its own. One side of the
Las Vegas valley can be calm and the other has dancing dust devils all
over the place.
Rain is like that too. Ominous clouds hang over one neighborhood
surrounded by blue sky everywhere else.
When summer comes, we get all excited about wind because it will
cool us off from the blazing heat. Nope. Not going to happen.
We have what we affectionately call “the blow dryer effect” in the
summer. A blast of warm air engulfs you, messes up that cute summer
hairdo and your body gets all mixed up.
You’ve just left an overly air-conditioned building, walked out into
the heat, and now get into your car which is baking in the sun. You
turn on your car air conditioner and it blasts you again with hot air
until you’ve travelled a few miles.
In the fall we wait patiently for it to cool down a bit. The breezes
seem a little more manageable and the temperature drops somewhere
between October and November.
This year, however, nothing was normal, and it seemed like the
winds blew almost every day. But I’m grateful we’re not in the Midwest
dealing with tornados - so a little wind is OK.
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
When I was a little girl I remember dancing
around a maypole in the school playground.
We held long streamers and weaved in and out
around each other until the maypole was
covered in a pretty basketweave of colors.
It was something we did each year in
May from the first grade through the fifth.
And I have pictures from each of those
years.
I guess we were considered too old in
sixth grade to participate in that particular
festivity because I don’t remember
participating that year. It’s odd, the things
we remember that come out of nowhere.
I also remember a Home Economics
class in fifth grade where I made Spanish
Rice. Apparently, I was allergic to
something in the dish and had a terrible
reaction. I never did learn what it was from but spent years avoiding
Spanish food.
Nowadays I find that I enjoy Spanish food and drink. Paellas and
tapas are favorites. I’ve had paella parties for friends and we sit around
eating and drinking Sangria for hours.
I always find it such a mellow drink that leads to easy thoughts. A
Let’s Talk Hats
By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents”
Hats are an important
accessory, and often
a necessity. When the
wind blows hard, and the temperatures low,
or the rain is pouring, or the sun is glaring,
many of us adopt a hat.
But the hat is more than just a protective
piece of clothing. It can be a wonderful
accessory.
A sun hat, a wide brim fedora, beanie, beret,
boater, bowler, and the ever-popular baseball
cap.
There are many more, but I find that a hat
can easily offer protection but at the same time
adds style to your look. Since spring is here,
and summer around the corner I recommend
you investigate the type of hat that is a soft,
durable, washable, and crushable.
Crushable hats can be folded up into your
purse, or easily packed and they really don’t lose their shape. Add to the
A Prelude to Summer
May 2023
brim some of my favorite accessories: A scarf, a pin and viola you can
match an outfit.
You say your hair isn’t right? Yes, add a
hat. I know - hat hair is never desirable, but
a messy uncooperative cowlick hair could be
even worse. And here is where a scarf could
replace a hat, too.
I am blessed with a head that just will not
wear a one size fits all hat. I have snipped the
hat liners on many a quick purchase straw
hat, and it always eventually ruins the hat. So,
I usually look for a large size when buying a
hat.
Have fun with your hats. I would welcome
seeing pictures of the hats you wear. Just be
careful of those pesky Vegas winds; and if it is
windy, I recommend a bucket hat with a chin
strap!
friend and I used to sit together on her deck on warm spring evenings
sipping Sangria and talking about life, love, and world events, not
necessarily in that order.
Sitting in the dark, with only the stars and moon to light the night
and listening to the sounds of evening, allows deep friendships to
develop. I still miss those times.
I thought I had the perfect Sangria
recipe until I found this one. It’s a keeper
and has a surprise ingredient. Try it. It’s
special.
Red Wine Sangria
Make and chill twenty-four hours
in advance. In a large, covered pitcher
combine 2 bottles good Spanish wine (or
Merlot), 1 cup brandy (the secret), ½ cup
Triple Sec, 1 cup pomegranate juice, ½
cup simple syrup (equal parts sugar and
water heated until sugar dissolves).
Taste for sweetness. Depending upon
the wine you use, you may need more simple syrup. Add thin slices of
orange, apple and strawberry. Pomegranate seeds look really pretty but
are not necessary. Stir well and chill.
Bank Accounts for
Grandchildren
By: Heather Latimer / Heather’s Self-Help Tips
When I started school in England in the
1930s, I was given a picture that showed a
tiny acorn beside a huge oak tree under the heading, “Little acorns
grow into huge oaks.”
It was accompanied by a post office savings book in which we were
instructed to deposit pennies from our weekly allowance plus all the
money received for birthday and Christmas gifts. Consequently, I
developed the habit of saving that has remained with me to this time.
After spending long years working and increasing savings, I now need
that money to pay for prescriptions, caregivers and perhaps residence in
an assisted living facility.
In addition, like some aging grandparents, we may be “victims” of
several offspring with entitlement mindsets. Youngsters who expect
frequent gifts and cash handouts without working for them plus a
substantial inheritance later on.
With so many demands on money it’s wise to introduce newborn
family members to handling their own deposits and withdrawals. Chase
Bank recently introduced a “debit card for kids” aged 6 – 17 years of
age. Every adult Chase customer is eligible to open it in a child’s name
by making a small one-time initial payment.
Thereafter the young account owner is required to keep it open by
making deposits. Those could consist of a fixed portion from a regular
monthly allowance plus earnings for chores carried out in the home,
or from odd jobs like babysitting.
According to bankers, those hands-on experiences cannot fail to
result in wise decisions regarding their capital long before the youthful
account owners reach maturity.
Mysterious Mount Shasta
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Thousands of seekers from all over the
world arrive in Mount Shasta’s in Northern
California for spiritual cleansing, healing, and
self-discovery.
Although some visitors come for outdoor sports, many more flock
here annually for mystical experiences. Most say they heard it was a
magical healing Mecca, while some say they listened to the “Call of
the Mountain.”
Yet, everyone agreed that it was impossible to go to Mount Shasta and
not be changed.
Mount Shasta is one of the planet’s most energetic and sacred peaks.
Historically it’s been a paranormal wonderland.
It has vortexes, cosmic portals, caverns, hot springs, etc.; Bigfoot,
UFO, inexplicable supernatural sightings, stories of hikers vanishing
without a trace, etc. It’s also the source of ancient legends and
Shamanic rituals since the Native Americans.
The Winnemem Wintu tribe, indigenous to the area, claim they’ve
always felt that they came from the mountain; it’s a sacred part of
the center of the universe. They even have stories about it being the
creator’s home.
Some wonder if the mountain’s unique geology and placement
on earth attract beings from other worlds - and maybe even different
dimensions. Others believe that the lost continent of Lemuria, with
its Crystalline capital city, Telos, is hidden underneath the mountain.
Some claimed to see white-robed, seven foot giant Lemurians shopping
in town, traveling in cloud-shaped UFOs in and out of the mountain.
An enigma still haunts Mount Shasta native Elijah Sullivan. He
spent the last six years trying to solve the mystery of a giant (60 ft)
secretly hand-dug hole on forest land on the side of Mount Shasta ten
years ago. Even though Forest Agents refilled the gap, Sullivan is still
adamant about investigating its source and what they were looking
for.
He’s been tracking three main theories, each of which points to a
different story about the region’s history. Were they looking for the
underworld of Lemuria, Ancient American Indian artifacts, or gold?
As cited in Active NoCal Magazine: “The town’s diversity is its draw,
and sitting at the bottom of the hole could have been any object
surrounding Mount Shasta.”
Is the Sun Setting on AM
Radio?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
AM radio has been in cars for over 100 years,
but like any other technology, there’s a time to
be born and a time to die. Unfortunately, the time to die for AM is now.
General Motors, Ford, BMW, Volkswagen. and other manufacturers
are deleting AM radio in their electric vehicles, mostly because EVs
are powered by a rechargeable battery, electric motor, and a frequency
converter that controls how much power the car’s electric motors put
out by turning voltage on an off thousands of times a second, basically
chopping up energy.
This process causes electromagnetic interference that gets picked up
by the radio. This explanation makes sense, but not everyone is in favor
of getting rid of AM.
Some people are fighting this wave of omission, mainly government
agencies. Why? Because AM radio operates at lower frequencies and
longer wavelengths, which enables it to pass through solid object and
travel farther than other radio waves, something FM channels can’t do.
This is why, when there’s any kind of national emergency (FEMA’s
National Public Warning System), AM radio is the best way to broadcast
the information that will reach the broadest section of people.
AM radio is where most news and sports events are broadcast, and
there’s no extra charge for it in a vehicle. Manufacturers are changing
infotainment systems over to subscription-based setups, such as
satellite radio, Google navigation, and others that they can charge for
and make a profit. It’s a win-win for the manufacturers because that’s
one more component they don’t have to pay for, and another area of
potential income.
If AM radio disappears, what are the options? With Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto Compatibility available in most new cars today, people
can tune into their own sports or news apps and connect directly to
their in-car radios to listen.
There are also third party apps that provide access to AM broadcasts,
meaning there’s still a way to gain access. So, enjoy AM now, for it shall
soon disappear like roll up windows and bench seats.
More Bureaucratic
Nonsense
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
new government sponsored farce made its
A debut last month. The US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) introduced a new demand that all car
manufacturers must build 50% electric vehicles (EV’s ) by 2030.
Considering that manufacturers sell about 15 million vehicles
annually, at least 7.5 million therefore must be EV.
Never mind that EV technology is far from perfect. Never mind that
the electric power grid is incapable of handling the enormous demand
that this would create. Never mind that this will be an absolute failure!
Putting this in perspective – I previously mentioned that in Nevada
there were a total of 2,200 EV’s registered in the state. And last August,
NV Energy implored all of those users to defer charging their EV during
the day because the demand on the grid was too great for it to operate
efficiently.
It doesn’t take a rocket science to conclude that if 50% all car owners
in Nevada operated EV’s by 2030 (estimated to be 1.27 million in 2020)
the grid would collapse.
Two months ago, I touted a revolutionary EV that I termed “a real EV.”
Designed, produced and marketed in the Netherlands, the Lightyear
Solar Car, made its debut at the annual CES show in January.
The EV recharges itself directly from the sun, has a range of 300
miles and an affordable cost of $47,000. Unfortunately, one week
after my column came out, the company filed for bankruptcy. Is that
because it didn’t work? Nope. It was because the company didn’t have
the financial resources to produce more than one vehicle per week.
Why didn’t a EV producer (such as Tesla) buy them out and mass
produce the vehicle as designed? The answer - every EV manufacturer
builds only PLUG-IN EV’s.
What do you think would happen if Tesla purchased the Netherlands
technology? Every EV manufacturer would go belly up. We are talking
billions of dollars. Totally unacceptable.
The predictable answer is to keep going down the rabbit hole
developing a technology that will not work. This means trillions of
dollars will be wasted and the cycle of government intervention and
stupidity will prevail, once again.
Quick, Call an Ambulance!
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker /
Out & About
Last month my husband Ray and I decided to
have dinner at our favorite Italian bistro. We
like to slip in at a moment’s notice and look for a seat at the bar so
we can relax, listen to the talented local
musicians, and then have an authentic
Italian meal.
Ray and I never seem to run out of
things to talk about, but suddenly and
without warning, I found I couldn’t follow
his conversation. I had a strange sensation
that my barstool seemed to be shrinking. I
knew this was crazy.
It was just a typical barstool and even
had a footrest. But something weird was
happening and I was afraid I might fall
off my leather chair. It seemed to keep
slipping out from under me.
I tried to explain this to Ray, but his voice was fading away. I could
tell Ray was struggling to keep me from falling to the floor, but by this
time I was slipping in and out of consciousness.
Ray yelled for someone to help, but everything was happening so
fast, most of the diners sitting nearby just stared at us, as if we were
characters in some sort of show. By this time, I was vaguely aware that
Ray needed help and I needed an ambulance.
Everything seemed surreal. By the time the ambulance arrived I was
completely helpless and barely conscious.
Before I knew what was happening, we were on our way to the
hospital. Ray was following the ambulance
and I had no idea where we were going,
but it didn’t matter.
Summerlin Hospital had been notified
and I was barely aware of anything as the
hospital staff started checking my vitals
and filling out my admission papers.
For the next two days I had a myriad of
tests, which fortunately revealed that my
problem had been a bad reaction to a
prescribed medication.
Two days later I was awake, feeling much
better, and released from the hospital. It
was almost as if nothing ever happened.
The Importance of Strength Training for Seniors
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Strength training is essential
for people of all ages, but it
is especially crucial for seniors.
As people age, their muscles
gradually weaken, leading to various health problems,
such as frailty, falls, and difficulty performing daily
tasks.
However, the good news is that strength training can
help seniors improve their muscle strength, balance,
and overall quality of life.
Compared to other modalities, such as cardio or
flexibility exercises, strength training offers unique
benefits for seniors. For instance, cardio exercises, such
as walking or cycling, primarily focus on improving
cardiovascular health, which is undoubtedly essential.
Unfortunately, they do not provide the same benefits
as strength training when it comes to building and
maintaining muscle mass.
On the other hand, flexibility exercises, such as yoga
or stretching, can help improve range of motion and joint health. They
do not, however, offer the same benefits as strength training when it
comes to improving muscle strength and preventing muscle loss.
Strength training, therefore, should be an integral part of any
senior’s exercise routine. It not only helps build and
maintain muscle mass but also improves bone density,
reduces the risk of falls, and enhances balance and
stability.
Furthermore, strength training can help seniors
maintain their independence and perform everyday
tasks with ease, such as carrying groceries or getting
up from a chair.
Strength training can also be customized to meet
individual needs and abilities. Seniors can choose
to use free weights, resistance bands, or machines,
depending on their preference and physical limitations.
It can also be tailored to meet individual needs
and abilities and is suitable for seniors with various
medical conditions. Therefore, seniors should prioritize
strength training as part of their exercise routine to
maintain their physical health and overall quality of
life.
Larks & Owls
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
hate morning people! The Larks. They’re
I the ones who wake up happy after achieving a
restful, restorative sleep, never waking even once
to pee.
They’re the ones who pop out of bed at 5:00 am, rush off to the
gym, exercise, shower,
change, grab breakfast
and are at work by 8.
Or, maybe they stay
home, make coffee,
and report to their
computers to continue
writing the great
American novel before
they’re disturbed when
the slackers decide it’s
time to rise.
All my life I’ve
struggled with
morning. Even as a
kid, morning was a
shock. My own mother refused to come near me. To wake me for school
she would shout out from the kitchen so as not to have to deal with my
grumpy demeanor.
As a single mom, I was on my own. Frankly, I don’t know how I did
it. Two kids to get ready for school, lunches to pack, a dog to walk, and
out the door by 8:15.
I’m sure my lack of enthusiasm for that time of day was instrumental
in their GPA failing
to get them admitted
to Harvard. That,
and feeding them
Spaghetti-Os for dinner.
I used to be an Owl.
I relished the evenings
after the kids were
asleep and the house
grew quiet. This was
“me” time before there
was such a thing.
A glass of wine,
a good book, and a
comfortable chair was
like being on vacation.
Once, I could even stay awake for the entire “Saturday Night Live.”
Today I’m no longer a night person. But I’m still no friend of the
morning. I have a few good hours in the middle of the day, but there’s
only so much productivity one can cram into the space between 11:00
and 1:00!
Is there still a chance I can learn to delight in the morning? I can’t
seem to sleep past 7:30 anyway.
And rarely must I rush off to anywhere. Even the dog likes to sleep in.
As long as I’m awake, should I at least try to be happy? Can I influence
my inherent circadian rhythm?
The answer is a resounding NO! An article I read recently claimed:
“If you’re just not a morning person, science says you may never be.
Morning people and night owls are born that way. If you’re not a
morning person, it’s likely you’ll never be, at least until the effects of
aging kick in.”
Well, the effects of aging have kicked in. I do wake up early each day,
but science is reassuring me I don’t have to like it!
So much for smiley faces and cheerful chatter at 8:00 am. I shall
continue to move through my morning routine in utter silence. I’ll
continue to grunt at my husband as he walks into the kitchen and
buries his head behind the newspaper. After years of marriage, he’s
learned not to speak to me before my second cup of coffee.
And thanks to that article, I can apply my self-improvement energies
elsewhere where they might have a better chance of succeeding. Like,
for example, flossing.
NSPCA Facility is Wonderful
By: Diane Rosen / Animal Magnetism
The new NSPCA facility in Vegas is spectacular!
I took a tour last month with fellow members
of the Sun City Anthem Pet Club, and we all
came away surprised
and delighted. What a fantastic shelter.
It’s not just the cleanliness of the
facility and the obvious love the staff and
volunteers have for the residents there. It’s
the whole philosophy of what an animal
shelter should be.
Lori Horeen, the Executive Director of
the 40-year old, no kill shelter, says that
intake diversion is a key goal. That means,
they want people to keep their pets if they
can.
If a pet owner can’t afford to feed their pets, the shelter’s pet food
pantry helps them. The pantry was started during Covid, so that people
in isolation didn’t have to give up their pets.
Lori describes the NSPCA as a human services organization. What a
rare way of thinking about an animal shelter. It’s not just animals in,
animals out, destroy the sick ones, try to keep up. It’s compassion and
love for animals!
The shelter is spotless. It doesn’t smell at all. It’s neat and orderly and
wonderful. The shelter takes in pet rats (eek!) guinea pigs, cats, dogs
and rabbits.
Each pet area provides a stress-free
environment for the animals. It feels like
a home, not a shelter.
The NSPCA is the largest transfer shelter
from kill shelters in the area. No animals
are ever killed there.
They stay at the shelter for as long as it
takes to find them a home. And they’ll have
a home at the shelter for their lifetimes if
they don’t get adopted.
They have a devoted paid medical staff,
hundreds of on-site volunteers, and 250
foster families that care for and get to know
the animals so they can eventually be matched with the perfect human.
Please support this great shelter. They rely solely on private donations
from generous people like you. They are currently in great need of cat
food. And they have a wish list on Amazon. Please check it out.
I Love These Products
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
I
’m so happy to share
that I have found an
entire line of products
that I love! Well, at least everything in the line
that I’ve tried so far.
The products and the pricing are wonderful.
The line is called Andalou Naturals.
Their website states that they are 98%
nature-derived, vegetarian, with a large vegan
offering and most important, (to me) they
never test on animals.
I first ordered their rose scented foaming
face wash. It was light and left my skin feeling
clean but not dry. I love the way it smells too.
I decided to try their heavy face cream and
once again I was so pleased. It’s heavy and
really moisturizing but did not break me out which often happens with
heavy creams.
Loving both those items, I ordered the mask, and the lighter day
moisturizer all in the same grouping. The mask was a leave on and
wash off.
I used a light exfoliator first and then the
mask. It did leave my skin really soft.
The line has several ranges, like Age
Defying, Clear Skin, Sensitive etc. and then in
each line, several options. They even have a
men’s care line.
Although the only grouping I have tried is
the sensitive skin line, I am very happy with
all of the products.
They do offer a free sample with every
order so you can test other products without
committing.
Should you want to learn more, their
website is: https://andalou.com.
Even Kindness Needs Boundaries
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
One of the most popular topics I teach is Setting
Boundaries - but setting boundaries can be
hard to do if you’ve made kindness the primary
focus of
your engagements.
Don’t get me wrong, we
should all be kind. And there’s
no doubt that if there was more
kindness, the world would be a
much better place.
Attention to kindness is now
a thing, complete with memes.
Apparently, it needs promoting
like the latest marketing concept
we’re reminded to support.
But it’s not reminders to be
kind that we need. What we
need are reminders to be kind, but with boundaries.
Kindness is great until boundaries are crossed. Unbridled kindness
can have you giving up a piece of your authentic self every time you
engage. When you lead with kindness, you feel good about yourself at
the end of the day.
But were you kind to yourself? How much did you tolerate? How
many of your personal boundaries were crossed?
How much self-love and self-compassion did you shower on yourself?
If the answer is none, then it’s time to set some boundaries for yourself
May 2023
too!
One boundary that comes to mind is: Don’t do more for others than
you do for yourself. Kindness begins with how you treat yourself!
Boundaries communicate our needs and expectations. It’s kind, not
selfish, to tell others how you want to be treated. If someone becomes
upset at your boundaries, it’s
just more evidence you need to
set them.
They’re healthy guidelines
you can use for more clear
and mindful communication
and engagements, less stress,
and a better sense of control.
When you don’t set boundaries,
you may begin to sweep all
the things that your infinite
kindness allowed past your
boundaries right under the rug.
It’s time to draw your line in
the sand and set some personal boundaries. Proclaim who you are and
have your circle adjust to it. Let your kindness flow, but let it flow with
awareness and intention.
Setting personal boundaries is the epitome of self-care and selfrespect.
Kindness with boundaries is Positive Aging!
Vets Town Hall
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Humans are amazingly resilient when part of a
community, and amazingly fragile when they
are not. For most of human history, trauma has
been experienced and processed in groups (family,
village, or tribe).
In fact, during the Middle Ages combat warriors
returned to village communities that wanted to help
loved ones make important readjustments in getting
back into the swing of things. One particular act of
welcoming the warriors back was to strip off their
clothes, burn them, and then pass their weapons
through fire to purify them.
It was a clear gesture announcing that it was over - and time to
settle in. Somewhere along the way society has lost much know-how in
caring for those who have been through the horrors of war.
A discount at the car wash, or free meal once a year on Veterans Day,
just isn’t enough. So, here’s some good news!
Sebastian Junger has founded Vets Town Halls, a nationwide
foundation that gives veterans the chance to tell their communities
what it felt like to go to war. The new non-profit organization provides
a healing platform for the difficulties in making war transitions.
For those unaware, Sebastian Junger is the bestselling author
of “War”, a book about the struggles of American soldiers in
Afghanistan’s infamous Korengal Valley, and their adjusting to life
back home. His documentary “Restrepo” won the Grand Jury Prize at
the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar the
following year.
These meetings help veterans, and the nation,
overcome misunderstandings, stigmas, and many
social disconnections that occur on the arduous
passage from war to peace. It may take courage to
stand up and speak, but it also takes courage to sit
down and listen.
Healing of traumatic war wounds (i.e., PTSD, et al),
begins with one important factor -understanding,
and a Vets Town Hall helps bring that understanding not only to veterans
but to the compassionate hearts of caring people in the community.
Perhaps there is an interest in sponsoring one in Las Vegas. For more
information: contact them the old-fashion way: Vets Town Halls, P.O.
Box 112, Richmond, VA or: vetstownhall.org,
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. All can be found on Amazon at: http://www.
Living Trust Concerns
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
“
Does your Plan prepare you if one or both of
you have to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility or
Memory Care Facility?”
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly
so, because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But
few are asking, “How does my estate plan help me handle with Elder
Planning or Assisted Living?
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a few days or months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled,
entering a skilled nursing facility/memory care facility or pass away.
This is when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work --
and when it’s too late to fix it!
I met with a family last week that is going to lose several hundred
thousand dollars because their Trust didn’t prepare for assisted
living.
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is all Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out and take the steps to avoid problems.
Learn why/how:
1. Many Living Trust plans may prevent you from qualifying for
Medicaid benefits and allow your estate to be wiped out by nursing
home bills! or Nevada’s Enhanced Medicaid Recovery!
2. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to needlessly lose half your community property
when it could have been protected.
3. It’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones -- after you’re gone! - such
as unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems! AND
4. How properly drafted Powers of Attorney for Finances and
Healthcare may remove the threat of guardianship, preserving your
ability to act and not involve the Court system. (A Living Trust that
merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
5. How to preserve your ability to act and make choices to save your
assets!
6. How a “Blue Pig” can save half a couple’s community property
when a spouse dies, and
7. How a “Pink Pig” can save your house
Check the seminar flyer below and make your reservation
right away.
Don’t risk all you’ve worked for during your lifetime. A properly
drafted and maintained Living Trust is critical to you and your loved
ones’ well-being -- be informed, rather than wait until it’s too late!
kind of a Big Deal!
This will be my fourth year as Executive Director of the Games
and each year I meet new people and make new friends among our
athletes. I’ve found that the Nevada Senior Games appeals to not only
our “junior seniors” at age 50 but also our more seasoned athletes.
In 2022 we had 24 athletes over the age of 85. Our oldest athlete was
93 years old. She played cornhole and inspired all of us to keep moving!
Like Walking on Broken Glass
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
You step out of bed in the morning. Your first
steps are agony. It feels like walking on broken
glass.
Eventually the pain eases but you may still have pain on the bottom
of your feet throughout the day. This has
happened every morning for a period of time
and it is just getting unbearable.
This is what life is like for someone
suffering from plantar fasciitis.
“Plantar” means the bottom of the foot.
“Fasci-” is short for fascia which is a tough
type of connective tissue that surrounds
muscles, nerves and blood vessels in your feet.
The fascia on the bottom of your feet run from your heel to your toes.
The “-itis” means inflammation. So plantar fascitis simple means
inflammation of the fascia in the bottom of your feet.
Plantar fascitis does not usually come from an overt injury or
trauma. It is most likely due to excessive wear and tear on the tissues at
the bottom of the feet.
Calf muscles that are too tight, an arch in the foot that is too high
or too low and improper foot wear are just a few of the contributing
factors that may lead to plantar faciitis. Being overweight or using the
feet excessively such as in long distance running may also contribute
to plantar fasciitis.
The two most common places for plantar facitis pain are the arch
of the foot and the heel, although it may be felt in other places on the
bottom of the foot.
Although plantar fasciitis may resolve on its own, many times it
does not. If the factors which contributed to
its development are not removed, the tissues
in the feet continue to undergo wear and tear
producing a chronic inflammatory state.
Even short periods of walking can
exacerbate the condition. Where massage of
the calf muscles, losing weight, arch supports
and rest may contribute to decreasing damage
to the fascia, many times the patient must undergo medical therapy to
reduce the inflammation in the fascia.
From my perspective, a few sessions of a frequency specific
microcurrent program for plantar fascitis is the most effective and most
painless way of resolving plantar fasciitis.
IRS Scams
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
It’s that wonderful time of year – spring is in the air, the cherry
blossoms coming back to life, and even the crack of the bat
signaling that new baseball season.
But we hope you didn’t forget about April 15 th - tax day. Scammers
didn’t. And don’t you fall for that IRS scam.
You know, that’s when you get a “phone call” from that IRS
informing you that your taxes are not paid, or that there was a
mistake in your filing.
The “agent” might tell you that you must pay up now or the US
Marshalls will be coming to your house or perhaps the IRS is missing
valuable information
which you can
simply provide to
the person on the
phone to clear up any
misunderstanding.
Remember what
we have been saying:
Government agencies
(and especially the
IRS) will never call,
email, or text you
to ask for personal
information - like
your Social Security
or bank account
number
And if you receive
this message via
email, never click on the links. It’s a trap.
One more thing: Don’t trust your caller ID. While that caller ID
might show an actual government agency, any caller ID can be
faked by the bad guys.
What do you do if this happens to you? It’s simple. If you have any
concerns about its legitimacy, contact the IRS directly.
Remember our Senior Scam number 1 rule: NEVER,
NEVER, NEVER give out any personal information over the
phone. That includes your date of birth, Social Security, Medicare,
and your bank accounts numbers.
And if anyone demands payment by means of a gift card, Western
Union money transfer or even cryptocurrency, it’s a 100% scam.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS.
So, what do you do if you get that phone call or email?
Take a deep breath, listen to your brain, and DELETE, DELETE,
DELETE that email - and if by telephone, HANG UP THE
PHONE, HANG UP THE PHONE & HANG UP THE PHONE.
We’ll have more scams in future editions. Until then, The Vegas
Voice hopes that everyone stays safe, be smart and to always -
SLAMS THOSE SCAMS.
Walk - Don’t Run!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
You’ve all heard the adage “walk, don’t run.”
Well, that goes for many of us.
I used to participate in 5k and 10k runs - not
anymore. My knees won’t take that now.
Although I’ve been teaching Zumba for 15 years, my knees are still in
great condition, but believe me - I’m not pushing it by running!
I now walk around my neighborhood, especially since the warmer
weather is upon us. Walking is good for the soul and your heart. I take
my cell phone and play music while walking at a leisurely pace, and
then pick up the pace a little. Flowers are in bloom and the warmer
weather feels good!
We’ve had a different winter - lots of wind and cold. We even
experienced some days of snow! Yep, even here in the desert!
Three years after the dreaded pandemic began, we are beginning
to spring back to life. It may not ever return to the way it was prepandemic,
but at least we can see the “light at the end of the tunnel.”
As each day goes by, we are seeing recovery in our beautiful Las Vegas
Valley.
Did we all gain a few pounds during the pandemic? Don’t stress
about it. Just take it easy.
Better to lose a few pounds at a time slowly than to crash diet. Try to
enjoy the goodies if you must – but in moderation.
I try not to deny myself any of the wonderful sweets, chocolates, etc. I
found one secret to keeping your alcohol in moderation is to have a sip
of water every so often when drinking wine or cocktail.
I also try to nibble on some veggies before venturing out to meet a
friend for drinks or snack. Then I am not so famished when I get there
and eat much more than I intended!
Enjoy life - since we are not promised tomorrow!
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
Are You Water-Wise?
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
In May, as we begin our time of high temperatures
and reduced rainfall, an important factor
affecting our gardens is using water in an effective
and cost-effective manner. Improper irrigation leads
to higher water bills, water waste and plant stress.
Proper irrigation requires grouping your plants
based upon their watering needs. They can be
categorized as Non-Native plants (such as roses,
lavender, gardenias, etc.) placing them on a
separate irrigation setting (valve) and following
Water Authority recommendations or categorized
as Native plants needing limited amounts of water (such as cactus,
agave and yucca), and grouping them together on a different setting
(valve).
If you are growing fruits and/or vegetables they too should have
their own settings. In this way, you are addressing their individual
needs while saving water and money!
Native plants follow a more limited watering schedule of one day a
week in Fall and Spring; twice a week in Summer; and no irrigation at
all in Winter. When you do water, remember that it is how often (not
how long) that you irrigate that matters to your plants.
Excessive water just filters down through our sandy/rocky soil and is
lost along with your money!
Use drips rather than spray irrigation to prevent run-offs and to
direct water to the root systems. Drip emitters are labeled with how
many gallons of water they release per hour or have adjustable swivel
heads to control the amounts.
Water deeply rather than frequently. During hot, dry months, each
session for non-natives should be for about 30
minutes twice a day while natives need between 10-
15 minutes once or twice a week.
You can retain soil moisture and lower water
usage by surrounding plants with organic (wood)
chips or compost. This will lower soil temperature,
reduce evaporation, and provide needed nutrients
for root absorption.
As your plants mature, reposition and add more emitters around
larger plants. Active roots are located parallel to the “canopies” of the
plant. Emitters located too close to the trunks or stems are ineffective
and wasteful!
With our on-going drought conditions, it’s important to be Water-
Wise!
We Saw Crocs
By: Dianne & Burt Davis / Our Vacation
We were less than a foot away from
crocodiles jumping out of the Adelaide
River in Australia. We were warned - we best keep our appendages
from dangling over the side.
Thanks to Viking Cruises, we experienced wild life in the wild.
During an hour long cruise, crocodiles’ snacks were dangled over the
side of our flat bottom boat as a lure for the 15 foot long creatures to
jump above the water to retrieve the offered food.
They got meaty snacks. We got the opportunity to see them rise out
of the water, open their huge jaws wide, and consume their rewards.
“Casanova”, a 1,700 pound specimen raised himself out of the water
for his snack. The food used to lure the crocs up is not their main diet,
more like a snack or dessert, enough to entice them to rise so we can
appreciate their enormity.
They use their tails to rise high enough to grab the dangled food. The
younger leaner ones can jump pretty high.
These salt water crocodiles have a unique sensory system that
enables them to tune into vibrations in the water. They can sense
“food” entering the river.
These “Salties” have the strongest bite force of any animal. Their life
span is about 70-90 years. Our guide/boat driver told us that they are
highly territorial predators who eat each other, turtles, grubs, or most
anything that crosses their paths.
They don’t usually die in the wild, but rather are killed and eaten by
others of their species who take over their turf.
Our outward-facing boat seating gave us unobstructed views of the
crocs, critters, and vegetation. The Adelaide River, less than an hour’s
drive from Darwin is home to about 10,000 of these reptiles.
The facility we visited is “proudly” owned by the Arirrki Aboriginal
Corporation, a registered not-for-profit which is dedicated to
“Community support for the Anindilyakwa people of the Groote
Eylandt Archipelago, our brothers and sisters.” We truly enjoyed this
educational excursion during our Komodo and the Australian Coast
Cruise.
Paris & Normandy Memorable Trip
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
Over the 35+ years we’ve been in the travel
business, one of the reoccurring trips we plan
for our clients are “big personal event” trips. It
might be a big birthday trip, a round
number (think 60, 70 or 80 years old), or a grandchild’s
birthday, (first communion or Bar/
Bat Mitzvah) trip.
Travel and big family events go
hand in hand.
As I approach my 70 th birthday,
that’s exactly what I’m planning
right now. In addition, I want to check off one of
my bucket list travel destinations. I am currently
researching a personal trip that will include a visit to
Normandy and the World War II D-Day beaches in France.
I always wanted to visit this area for two reasons. First, I was a history
major in college with a focus on modern American History. I am a
World War II history “nerd.”
Second, and most important, my Dad was a World War II European
Army Vet. He served from January 4, 1944, until the end of the War.
He served in France and entered Europe through the port of Le Havre,
in early 1945. To walk in his “Army” footsteps would be a memorable
experience.
One of the best ways to accomplish this “Bucket List” trip is by a River
cruise. And with our new relationship with Viking River Cruises, we
are happy to announce a VEGAS VOYAGERS, PARIS & THE HEART
OF NORMANDY river cruise scheduled for
October 22, 2024.
2024 will celebrate the 80 th anniversary
of the D-Day landings and many special
dedications are planned in this anniversary
year.
This trip starts and ends in Paris with a full
day trip honoring D-Day landing beaches
and memorial sites included in the cruise.
We are offering additional “special Vegas
Voyager offers” above and beyond Viking
River cruise offers you might receive in the mail. Any offer code that
you receive we will also honor, plus our group specials for this October
22, 2024, departure.
For further information call us at 516/485-3200 or email to
fairtravel@aol.com. Please consider joining us for what will be a truly
memorable experience.
As part of the Cascade Range, Mt. St. Helens,
Mt. Hood, and Mt. Jefferson appear like a spine
progressing up the center of Oregon and Washington. And when it
comes to Mt. St. Helens, expect the unexpected, scientists say.
Mt. St. Helens represents nature’s awesome power at its finest and the
most active volcano (and deadliest) in North America. The mountain
was dormant for 127 years and being from the Pacific Northwest, I
grew up with assurances the beautiful dormant white mountain would
never become active in my lifetime.
Could Mt. St. Helens
Blow Again?
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
That was
before Mt. St.
Helens came
to life and
literally blew
her great
white dome
top on May
18, 1980.
Survivors
called it “Hell
on earth.”
On May 17,
1980, a succession of earthquakes underneath the mountain signaled
that a cataclysmic occurrence was commencing. Many thought the
mountain would blow straight-up when it went off. Instead, it blew
sideways.
A mudflow roared down at 300-miles per hour. The blast was
stronger than hurricane force, with mud the texture of concrete. It was
the largest landslide in recorded history.
The nine-hour eruption killed 57 people and leveled 230-square
miles of prime forest. To this day, it’s Washington State’s worst air
polluter.
Mt. St. Helens is rebuilding itself from the inside out and is still
considered the most likely mountain in the Cascades to blow again.
The Cascade Mountain Range stretches from British Columbia to
Northern California.
With a perfect conical shape Mt. St. Helens was considered the prettiest
in the range. When I was a teenager, my family enjoyed a camping trip
alongside the lake that was below picturesque Mt. St. Helens.
Spirit Lake is no more. When the mountain blew, the lake swiftly
overflowed with volcanic ash and debris.
St. Helens is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, a segment of the Pacific
Ring of Fire. As of now, the mountain is to some degree tranquilly
wrapped in timber and ash, but could Mt. St. Helens Blow Again?
“Indeed, she could,” declare prominent volcano scientists.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.
Hawaii
By: Lisa Kemmerling /
The Fashionable Traveler
When I think of the Hawaiian Islands, some of
my most treasured memories come to mind.
I fell in love with Hawaii at the tender age of 15,
when my high school was offering trips to various places for a spring
sabbatical.
Many hours of babysitting and working at the Dairy Queen later
helped fulfill that dream. Landing in Oahu after an 8 hour journey, I
quite literally thought “I’m in Paradise.”
A decade later, when I met my husband we decided to take our
honeymoon to Kona on The Big Island. That was soon followed by all
the subsequent trips to the various Islands (with our daughter through
the years) confirming what many people already knew - that Hawaii is
magical, beautiful, relaxing, and tropical all rolled into one.
Naturally, many things have changed over the years on these
beautiful islands. Setting all that aside, we recently returned to the
island of Maui to immerse ourselves once again and reminisce about
the good times we’ve had.
If you’re a golf enthusiast, then Maui is your place. With 14 courses to
choose from, they’re considered some of the most challenging around.
For those who enjoy more adventurous activities, an early morning
bike ride down Haleakala will definitely wake you up - been there and
done that. US News ranked Wailea and Napili Bay as some of the best
beaches in the world.
There are many restaurants in Maui to choose from; however, our
personal favorite is Merriman’s, located in a beautiful cove with ocean
casual can be dressed up or down depending on where you are headed.
For the ladies, linen, dresses, and skirts paired with sandals and a light
For the men, shorts or light dress pants paired with none other than
Erik Eisenberg is the Vice President of Ticket
Sales for the Aviators minor league baseball
team. He is originally from Madison, Wisconsin.
Erik did various internships with the Milwaukee
Bruins and Milwaukee Bucks.
After graduating from college,
he moved to Las Vegas and
joined the Las Vegas 51’s, now
the Aviators.
“The best thing about the
Aviators is the culture and the
people,” states Erik.
The culture of the Aviators
is one of a family. It’s a team
on the field and a team in the
office, making the ballpark a
great place to work.
Family Friendly Baseball
Erik Eisenberg
Erik has been a huge baseball fan all his life. All this started with his
father taking him to County Stadium to watch baseball. Working in the
industry has been a bonus.
In addition, Erik has had various positions with the Aviators,
including Executive and Box Office Manager. He oversees all sales and
service for the Aviators in the ballpark, with approximately 600,000
fans attending during the season.
42
May 2023
The ballpark has a wide range of features for adults, children, and
families. One of the best areas is the pool, which is sold out every night.
Having suites available for hospitality gives the guests another vantage
point to enjoy the game.
One of Erik’s favorite moments at the ballpark was opening day in
April 2019, which officially opened the new stadium. It took two years
of hard work, selling out the stadium and ensuring the season tickets
were correct. It was Erik’s crowning achievement in the build-out of
the ballpark.
Having a minor league team in the Vegas Valley gives the fans greater
access to the players than at the major league level. The game is more
about the atmosphere and entertainment value; even if the team is
losing, fans are still having fun.
The Aviators are the epitome of what the Vegas Valley has to offer, and
Erik Eisenberg is an excellent example of making the stadium fun and
family friendly.
Remember the plastic bib? This is where you put it on. They bring the delicious crawfish, blue crab, snow
crab, or any other delectables still wrapped in plastic bags carried by galvanized buckets direct from the
HotNJuicy rules! Amazingly good. Felt like taking a bath in this juiciness. Easy, don’t get carried away. It was
buttery, spicey, juicy, garlicy, all stirred up in one. The seafood was cooked well. Although, I have to mention
a little quality control and examination of the cluster could go a long way to weed out the not so healthy legs
Just Crossing That Bridge When I Come To It
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
Not that I’m elderly or anything but being
none-of-your-business years old, I sometimes
have a teensy problem remembering things.
Not the big things - I don’t normally forget to
eat, sleep, get dressed or purchase hair
products.
It’s normally names, dates, plans,
and… where I put the dog food.
I forget to record Cake Boss, and then,
when I do record it, I usually want to make
one of the cakes he’s baking, so (and I
must do this immediately, or all thought
of cakes will be replaced with something
like why I can’t find a shorter pair of
shoelaces) I put the ingredients on my
grocery list - which remains magnetized
to the refrigerator as I wander aimlessly
through the aisles at Albertson’s.
In order to combat this creeping
oldness, I decided to learn to play Bridge, and went looking for someone
to teach me. After a long and frustrating (actually insulting) hunt, two
friends, John and Ralph, have accepted the challenge.
The fact that they are men made me hesitate. Women are ordinarily
much more patient as teachers of other women because most can
relate to the female learning curve, whereas men who teach women
notoriously begin yelling, cussing, and in some cases throwing things,
quite early in the teaching process.
So, I figured I might need earplugs,
thick skin, and possibly a helmet. But, so
far, playing Bridge has it backwards: your
regular, normal guy seems to have the
patience of a saint.
John and Ralph have been serene and
methodical as they’ve taken me and Laura
(the friend whom I talked into joining us)
through the beginner steps of Bridge.
They’ve answered our endless questions,
sometimes the same one, two or three (ok,
eleven) times, and still haven’t lost their
senses of humor. I know this because
every time I play a card with the shrewd
judgment of a monkey on crack, they just
laugh.
“Ha ha,” they say, “you’re just learning! You’ll get better!” (although
John is beginning to laugh just a tad desperately, and Ralph has
become quieter each week...like stoic...almost as if he had a bottle of
Knob Creek stashed under the table, which would explain his repeated
ducking to “tie” and “re-tie” his shoes).
Anyway, we’re coming along quite nicely, and I feel like such a grownup.
My parents played Bridge with three other couples every week while
I was growing up, and I thought it was so cool.
They had two tables and switched partners, and they all smoked and
ate peanuts and drank martinis, and I’d always sneak down the hall
to watch and dream of the day I, too, could drink a martini...it was a
magical time.
I love being able to toss off things like “no trump”, “longest and
strongest,” “major and minor”…and “Whose turn is it?” But my
favorite part about playing Bridge is being the Dummy.
I normally take offense at this, but in this context, it’s a good thing.
It means that your partner must play the whole hand himself, and you
get to “lay your cards on the table” sit back and drink your martini,
and you get all the points he/she makes, but none of the blame if it all
goes to hell! It’s fabulous!
There are many, many (and many more) things I still haven’t
learned about Bridge, and possibly never will, but hey, I can now play
a simple hand if I have to, with minimal screw-ups. John and Ralph
are thrilled.
They say we’re ready to play with others…like IMMEDIATELY. I
think I even saw tears in their eyes.
And I am much less forgetful now…so, whose turn is it?
This Month It's Reigning Cats & Dogs for Brain-Health
By: Jan Fair / A No-Brainer Minute
M
ay is National Pet Month. And according to a recent study in the Neuroscience Newsletter,
pets can boost your brain power. It's not just cats & dogs, participants in
the study also cared for rabbits, hamsters, birds, fish & reptiles. Having a long-term pet companion
was found to delay memory loss and other kinds of cognitive decline. In Neil Shaw's book, "The 10-
Step Stress Solution: Live More, Relax More, Reenergize" he says pets can help in reducing stress.
Ways Pets Improve Our Health
• leads to an increase in activity (altho it's
best to 'jog' rather than 'walk' your dog)
• reduces high blood pressure
• lowers risk of a heart attack
• lessens risk of having a stroke
• helps ease chronic pain
• alleviates depression
• improves one's sense of purpose
• helps make our children kinder people
• increases one's chances for more
social interaction
• helps heal those with disabilities
• reduces cognitive decline
• extends our life span
