Quick, Call an Ambulance!
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker /
Out & About
Last month my husband Ray and I decided to
have dinner at our favorite Italian bistro. We
like to slip in at a moment’s notice and look for a seat at the bar so
we can relax, listen to the talented local
musicians, and then have an authentic
Italian meal.
Ray and I never seem to run out of
things to talk about, but suddenly and
without warning, I found I couldn’t follow
his conversation. I had a strange sensation
that my barstool seemed to be shrinking. I
knew this was crazy.
It was just a typical barstool and even
had a footrest. But something weird was
happening and I was afraid I might fall
off my leather chair. It seemed to keep
slipping out from under me.
I tried to explain this to Ray, but his voice was fading away. I could
tell Ray was struggling to keep me from falling to the floor, but by this
time I was slipping in and out of consciousness.
Ray yelled for someone to help, but everything was happening so
fast, most of the diners sitting nearby just stared at us, as if we were
characters in some sort of show. By this time, I was vaguely aware that
Ray needed help and I needed an ambulance.
Everything seemed surreal. By the time the ambulance arrived I was
completely helpless and barely conscious.
Before I knew what was happening, we were on our way to the
hospital. Ray was following the ambulance
and I had no idea where we were going,
but it didn’t matter.
Summerlin Hospital had been notified
and I was barely aware of anything as the
hospital staff started checking my vitals
and filling out my admission papers.
For the next two days I had a myriad of
tests, which fortunately revealed that my
problem had been a bad reaction to a
prescribed medication.
Two days later I was awake, feeling much
better, and released from the hospital. It
was almost as if nothing ever happened.
A word to the wise… Always double-check your prescriptions!
