This Month It's Reigning Cats & Dogs for Brain-Health
By: Jan Fair / A No-Brainer Minute
M
ay is National Pet Month. And according to a recent study in the Neuroscience Newsletter,
pets can boost your brain power. It's not just cats & dogs, participants in
the study also cared for rabbits, hamsters, birds, fish & reptiles. Having a long-term pet companion
was found to delay memory loss and other kinds of cognitive decline. In Neil Shaw's book, "The 10-
Step Stress Solution: Live More, Relax More, Reenergize" he says pets can help in reducing stress.
Ways Pets Improve Our Health
• leads to an increase in activity (altho it's
best to 'jog' rather than 'walk' your dog)
• reduces high blood pressure
• lowers risk of a heart attack
• lessens risk of having a stroke
• helps ease chronic pain
• alleviates depression
• improves one's sense of purpose
• helps make our children kinder people
• increases one's chances for more
social interaction
• helps heal those with disabilities
• reduces cognitive decline
• extends our life span
