What are the mortgage rates really doing?
Are you feeling a bit unsure about what’s really happening with
interest rates? That might be because you’ve heard someone
say they’re coming down. But then you read somewhere else
that they’re up again. And that may leave you wondering what’s
true.
March 2024
The simplest answer is: that what you read or hear will vary
based on the time frame they’re looking at.
Mortgage Rates Are Volatile by Nature
Interest rates don’t move in a straight line. There are too many
factors involved for that to happen. Instead, rates bounce
around because they’re impacted by things like economic
conditions, decisions from the Federal Reserve, and much more.
That means they might be up one day and down the next
depending on what’s going on in the economy and the world as
a whole.
The Big Picture
Mortgage rates are always going to bounce around. It’s just how
they work. When you look at the highest point for mortgage rates
in the past year (October 2023) compared to where rates are
now, you can see they have come down compared to last year.
The interest rates go up and down daily, however experts agree,
overall, that the downward trend could continue this year. That's
good news for both homebuyers and homesellers!
market - I'm here to help! My office is open 7 days a week for
A Cranky Old Man
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
It serves you right for answering the phone.”
That was my Rana’s response when I, once
again, slammed down the phone after telling the
caller to engage in solo lovemaking.
I admit that I’ve reached the age and now disposition of my dad.
I used to tell him that he was
becoming a “cranky old man.” He
would (eventually) calm down,
smile and advise me that I’m not far
behind.
As always, my father was correct.
I mention this since I just
received my fifth robocall/unwanted
telephone call of the morning. And I
am fully aware, (heck, we all know)
this is only the beginning.
Welcome to the new (and
never-ending) political season.
Compounding this epidemic and
our slow but steady descent into the
bowels of hell is the use of AI-created voices.
There was a brief article in the LV Review-Journal last month. It
advised that the Federal Communications Commission unanimously
ruled against robocalls that contain voices generated by artificial
intelligence.
The article indicated that this government bureaucracy would not
tolerate this new technology to scam people and mislead voters. With
this news, will you now sleep better at night?
Who are they kidding?
Does anyone believe that this issue is now solved? I have no doubt
that this ruling will be as effective as that “do-not-call” directive that
was supposed to end robocalls in the first place. How did that work out
for you?
Let me ask this question. One I have posed previously: Does anyone
listen to robocalls? I mean the entire message from start to finish?
Perhaps you race to see how fast you can disconnect the call, or if
you’re as pathetically idiotic as this publisher, wait until the end to see
if it connects to a “live” person so you can use some (unprintable, yet)
colorful Bronx expressions to articulate your feelings.
Or if you’re a good-hearted person like my PILL (partner in love &
life) Rana, you try to patiently explain that you wish not to receive this
and future calls. Like that tactic ever
works.
And now with AI generated voices,
is there anyone out there that
originally wasn’t going to listen to
these calls, but will now do so, since
the President or former President
(as I present all sides)… or even
Elvis is “calling you”?
There is one small possible ray of
hope. If you want to avoid all such
political mailings and telephone
calls, you can fill out and complete
the “Confidentiality Request”
form. (See below).
All the information, instructions
and guidance can be found on our Vegas Voice website: thevegasvoice.
net.
Hopefully this Confidentiality Request will have better results than
the “do-not-call” fiasco. Until then, I guess there is nothing else to do
except “grin & bear it.”
But I sure do resent being suckered into answering the phone and
helpless to do anything but hang up. How do you stop the madness?
Call me cranky or grouchy but one thing is clear – I have good
reason to be.
Let it Snow, Let it Snow
Publisher Dan’s brother, Jeff Roberts sent over this photo of his Long
Island, NY home being blanketed by 6+ inches of snow last month.
Dan laughed and laughed and told his little brother it’s a good thing
he has a shovel.
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
une 15: Just moved here from Las Vegas. No
Jmore Vegas heat! We’re going to love living
here.
December 8: The first snow of the season
and the wife and I sat for hours by the window
watching the soft flakes drift down. So romantic, I love snow!
December 9: We awoke to a beautiful white
blanket. What a fantastic sight! Moving here was
the best idea I’ve ever had! Shoveled for the first
time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both
our driveway and the sidewalk.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and
covered up the sidewalk and driveway, so I had to
shovel again.
December 12: The sun melted all the snow.
Such a disappointment! My neighbor tells me
not to worry - we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. He’s such a nice
man, I’m glad he’s our neighbor.
December 14: Lovely 8 inches of snow! The temperature dropped to
12. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the
driveway and sidewalks. This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll
certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn’t huff and puff,
however.
December 15: More snow forecast. Bought snow tires for the wife’s
car and 2 extra shovels. The wife wants a wood stove in case the
electricity goes out. I think that’s silly.
December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in
6
Diary of a Chicago / New York Winter
March 2024
the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an
hour.
December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads too icy to go
anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on
to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife. Guess I should’ve bought a wood
stove but won’t admit it to her. I hate it when she’s right. I can’t
believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20: Electricity’s back on but had
another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
More shoveling! Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice. Neighbor
says I have to shovel, or the city will have it done
and bill me. I think he’s lying.
December 22: 9 more inches of the stuff fell
today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt till
August. Tried to hire my neighbor who now has a
plow on his truck, but he says he’s too busy. Now
I know he’s lying. Beginning not to like him.
December 23: “Only 2 inches” of snow today. And it warmed up
to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this
morning. What is she nuts?! Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month
ago. She says she did, but I think she’s also lying.
December 24: 6 inches and the snow now packed so hard by the
snowplow; I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If
I ever catch the SOB who drives that snowplow, I’ll drag him through
the snow and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling, and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour
and throws snow all over where I’ve just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her
and open our presents...but I was too busy watching for the damn
snowplow.
December 25: Merry freakin’ Christmas! 20 more inches of the
damn slop tonight - snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood
boil. God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit
him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she’s a fricking idiot.
December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here?
She’s really getting on my nerves.
December 27: Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze;
plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him. He only charged me
$4,400 to replace the pipes.
December 29: 10 more inches. My lying neighbor told me I have
to shovel the roof, or it could cave in. How dumb does he think I am?
God, I hate him.
December 30: Roof caved in. I beat up the snowplow driver, and
now he is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her
mother who lives in Sun City. Nine more inches predicted.
December 31: I set fire to what’s left of the house. No more
shoveling. Anybody know a good lawyer?

Look Familiar?
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
thought I’d write this month about a wonderful
I actor and dear friend of mine, Jim Beaver. He
is also a writer and film
historian.
Probably the thing he is most remembered
for is his reoccurring role in “Deadwood” and
“Supernatural”
A few of his other roles are the TV shows Perry
Mason, Matlock, NYPD Blue, The West Wing,
Home Improvement, Mike and Molly, and Young
Sheldon to name just a few. A favorite of mine
was on a series called B Positive.
Another one you might remember is when he
was cast as Ed Asner’s comic sidekick in the TV
series “Thunder Alley.”
He also wrote several episodes of the TV series
Alfred Hitchcock Presents and received a Cable
Ace Award nomination for the first episode he
wrote for that series.
Being a film historian, he has written and researched a great deal
about George Reeves, and in doing so was hired to be the historical and
biographical consultant for the 2005 movie based on Reeves’ life called
“Hollywoodland.”
Jim and I share our admiration and respect for George Reeves, whom
I’m sure you know played Superman. I played the little girl who was in
my room when two little “Mole” men come in through my bedroom
window in the pilot of the Superman TV series.
I was a big fan of Superman and although he wasn’t in the scene I
was in, he was wearing his Superman outfit on
the set and I thought he was really Superman!
Jim and I have been to many Superman
luncheons and celebrations where people from
all over the country come to celebrate him.
Through all of his research, Jim probably knows
more about George Reeves than just about
anybody.
He has also written several books. One of his
books is entitled “Life’s That Way” which is
about his beautiful late wife and the emotional
journey she endured during her cancer battle.
It is truly one of the most heartwarming, heart
wrenching, compelling and beautiful books I’ve
ever read.
To say that Jim is one of “the special” ones is
putting it mildly. How blessed I am to call him my friend.
Until next time, remember to hold tenderly that which you cherish.
That Rainbow Bridge
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
From the time I was a little child, there has
never been a day when my family and I were
without pets. They were always an essential part
of my life.
My love of dogs and cats became important to my children too and
fortunately, Publisher Dan felt the same way.
In my youth I learned of a magical place called “The Rainbow
Bridge. ” It is located
in Heaven where
animals go when
their life among us
is over.
At the Rainbow
Bridge they are
without pain, or
sickness, and never
lonely. They have
room to run and play
with so many others
- all waiting for their
families to eventually
join them.
Sadly, last month,
my dog Muffin, who
I adopted twelve years
ago from the Nevada
SPCA suffered a stroke. She joined all of our other dogs and cats that we
lost before her that were waiting at that Rainbow bridge.
My Muffin was a sweet little fluff ball that had been adopted twice
and, for some unknown reason, returned to the shelter both times. We
were lucky. The third time was the charm for 12+ wonderful years.
A year after Muffin came into my life, one of my daughters surprised
me with a Golden doodle pup for my birthday. Muffin stepped right in
and played mother to Daisy, who eventually grew ten times larger than
Muffin.
With Dan by my side, when it became “time,” I held Muffin in my
arms as the vet sedated her and then administered the medication that
would send her quietly to rest and to join her friends waiting for her at
that Rainbow bridge.
I’m sure many of you have gone through those same steps with your
beloved pets and have thought, as Dan and I did at that moment, how
calm and peaceful her passing was. Sad as it was, as it has been with my
other pets that passed on, it truly was one of the most compassionate,
humane and loving moments in my life.
Dan and I still cannot believe that such “final moments” are
forbidden by law in
our state. I am in
disbelief that the
government will not
allow its citizens to
go peacefully into
whatever waits for
us after our time has
come.
During the last
legislative session The
Vegas Voice started a
petition drive in favor
of allowing Nevada
residents the right to
end their suffering
as other states have
done.
Known as Death
with Dignity the
proposed law has failed in the Nevada Legislature several times over
the years. At the last Nevada legislative session, it finally passed the
Assembly and Senate, however, Governor Joe Lombardo vetoed it.
Perhaps at the next legislative session, once the bill (hopefully)
passes, the Governor can show the same “compassionate, humane and
loving concern” that Dan and I had and have for our “best friends.”
* As set forth last month, The Vegas Voice held a series of Guardianship
workshops around the Valley for our readers. And despite the work,
efforts and even an occasional “hassle” with Publisher Dan, when I
receive “cards, letter and emails” like the one below, it makes it all
worthwhile.
The future of the Suncoast Casino’s showroom
is uncertain as plans to
repurpose the beloved local
venue loom. Speculations persist of a potential
bingo or other gambling room, but definitive details
remain elusive at press time despite efforts for
clarification from management.
Suncoast opened in late 2000. The Review-
Journal’s Mike Weatherford observed the showroom
boasted, “handsomely retro tables-and-booths
venue in the tradition of the recently departed Desert
Inn or Caesars Palace.”
Ed Mathews, a retired record industry executive
settled in Sun City Summerlin in 1992. He soon
began producing weekly shows in the community’s
Starbright Theater, benefitting from the rich pool of
talent in the community.
Michael Gaughan, Suncoast’s owner, recruited Mathews to produce
a weekly variety show. “He knew what would work for his casino and
he was right. He knew what his audience wanted and gave it to them,”
Mathews remembered. (Gaughan has since sold his interest in Suncoast
to Boyd Gaming.)
Dennis Bono Show
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
The weekly Dennis Bono Show at South Point
Hotel Casino & Spa is the longest running
broadcast variety show in Las Vegas. Last month,
Dennis celebrated 24 years at the helm of this
Las Vegas treasure.
Every Thursday at 2 p.m. the 330 seat
showroom is filled. Most of the folks there are
“regulars,” the majority are senior citizens
who pay the phenomenally low price of $10
(which includes a ticket stub good for one
free drink that day.) for some wonderful
entertainment.
First comes the warm-up with giveaways. Hats, tickets for shows
at South Point, coupons for dinners at South Point or the popular
Bootleggers.
No surprise as Bono’s wife Lorraine Hunt Bono, the 32nd Lieutenant
Governor of Nevada, is part of the family owned Bootlegger Italian
Bistro on Las Vegas Boulevard, “South Strip.” Lorraine has appeared
on the show many times entertaining audiences with her singing.
Bono welcomes some of the finest talent in Las Vegas to the stage
during the 1 ¼ hour show. But first, we hear from him, the man
who is known as “the consummate interpreter of the Great American
Songbook.”
March 2024
Familiar songs such as “That Old Black Magic” put the audience in
the mood as Joey Singer and the other long time musicians back him.
The entertainers take center stage and then sit down with Bono to chat
and promote their gigs.
The first guest on his 24 th anniversary show was well known veteran
entertainer Bob Anderson. And the audience
loved seeing longtime favorite impressionist
Rich Little.
Others included Jazz vocalist Clint Holmes,
showman Earl Turner, songstress Kelly
Vohnn, the lovely Rita Lim, regular sidekick
Corrie Sachs, and the incredibly clever
Dennis Blair who serenaded Bono with an
original song related to the man who Blair
suggested worked an hour a week.
Surprise guests included tuxedo-clad entertainers Vinny Adinofi and
Chris Phillips aka Zowie Bowie with a special tribute. Frankie Scinta
sent a message and Entertainment icon Tony Orlando stopped by with
a congratulations. .
Treat yourself to a good time at the Dennis Bono Show at South Point
Hotel.
Ed Mathews: Memories of Suncoast Showroom
Gaughan directed Mathews that the venue “should have shows for
seniors.” He wanted to attract Sun City’s audience, Mathews remembers.
After a lifetime in the competitive record business, Mathews reflected
on his days producing a trio of weekly shows at
Suncoast, Sams Town and Gold Coast. “The only
time I loved my job was when I was working with
the casinos.”
“It was a happy time for me, a happy time for Las
Vegas,” Mathews recalled. He patterned the show after
the Ed Sullivan show. “They gave me an opportunity
to show off Las Vegas talent in a wonderful format.”
“My memories are the people,” Mathews
reminisces of his Suncoast days, citing music
directors Ned Mills and the late Bill Fayne before
rattling off a Who’s Who of local talent. Mathews
credits the Suncoast’s and other local showrooms for
allowing local talent to “show the best of themselves
in a production show.”
The days of major casinos attracting seniors by offering
complimentary transportation by the busload and other incentives
are long gone. Mathews credits Gaughan, now dedicated to the South
Point, with maintaining a venue emphasizing the senior audience.
“We had a great thing.”
Little Eddie
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
can still remember the smell of the cracked
I brown leather and cigarette smoke from Little
Eddie’s secondhand silver wheelchair. Those
cracks absorbed the smoke from the adults who
smoked, and they all smoked.
I hated that smell but loved seeing Eddie.
My Grandma Millie’s neighborhood was full of kids, and the field
between my grandma’s house and the Jennings’ house was “home
base” all summer long. We’d play kickball, baseball, or just tag around
the broken-down cars, and then cool down with grape Kool-Aid from
my grandma’s plastic pitcher, or the garden hose at John Decker’s
house.
14
March 2024
Each day, Eddie would be pushed out onto the edge of the field by his
younger but much bigger brother, Anthony. Eddie was older than the
rest of us kids, but he was smaller than everyone but me. I was always
the runt of the litter.
Eddie’s arms were like buggy whips and I’d have to hold his hand up
to give him a high-five, but I would always see his big smile when our
hands slapped.
Even though he was in pain, Little Eddie always had a smile for me.
He had a smile for everyone.
Little Eddie had advanced Muscular Dystrophy and couldn’t move
much by my eighth summer, but he was an inspiration to me. His
mother would bring out medicine around noon. I didn’t know what it
was, but it seemed to make him feel better.
Every day, we’d slap hands, he’d smile, and the rest of us would play. I
would catch a glimpse of him from time to time and I could tell he was
hurting. I didn’t understand much about the world, but it sure made
me sad to see him in pain.
Little Eddie passed that summer I turned eight, but I never forgot
how he made me feel when we slapped hands. His smile was bigger
than the pain, bigger than the disease, and bigger than my loss. He
helped me learn that tomorrow is never promised to any of us.
I never forgot that lesson. Bless you, Little Eddie!
A Day Late, a Dollar Short
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
got a speeding ticket! I was going 40 in a 35
I mile zone. Couldn’t believe it!
I decided on traffic school so my insurance
rates wouldn’t be affected. When I called, the
instructor said, “Bring fifteen dollars exactly.
We don’t have change.”
I forgot about the exact change part until
I was walking out of the house the day of.
I backtracked and went through every purse
I own - scrounged up $7.45. Then I tackled
all my coat pockets… another twenty-five
cents!
I realized, I’ll have to drive by the ATM,
however I hate ATMs! Don’t know how to do
them!
I suppose even morons know how to drive through an ATM, but not
this moron! When hubby was alive, he took care of the money. I never
bothered.
I drove to the bank with my bank card and started pushing buttons
at the ATM. The machine was broken! It insisted on giving me a twentydollar
bill!
Frustrated, I glanced in my rear-view mirror. A long line of cars had
formed behind me!
I stretched out the driver’s window to try again. A man suddenly
stopped beside me, and he had a holstered gun!
OMG! A robber. I watched him closely so I could fill out a police
report if he didn’t shoot me!
The name on his shirt was L-O-O-M-I-S.
Wait! Loomis is the company that services
the bank. Thank goodness! Someone called
to report the broken machine I suspected.
“I need exactly fifteen dollars,” I explained.
“The machine won’t give it to me!”
The man shook his head. Oh no, Now he
was going to shoot me!
“Punch twenty dollars into the ATM!”
Fearfully, I did.
“Punch in your security code!” The
machine spit out a twenty dollar bill.
“The ATM doesn’t dispense money in fifteen-dollar increments,” he
said. I gasped. “Really? Thanks!” I sped away, and the long line behind
me moved up one car!
I bought a package of gum with the twenty dollars and got the rest
of the change I needed.
Luckly, I wasn’t late for class! Safe driving everyone!
A Birthday Memory
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
When I was 22, I began to play cards with my
90-year-old next door neighbor, August, and
his girlfriend, Edith, 81. I
loved my evenings with them and I adored August.
He was sharp and funny, and candid. He hated
losing and would blatantly cheat. I occasionally
called him on it, but I enjoyed him too much to
really fuss.
We took turns playing at each other’s houses,
and the host always provided cake and tea.
August loved Duncan Hines Spice Cake Mix with
a confectionary sugar glaze and made it each time
it was his turn.
To celebrate my birthday one St. Patrick’s Day,
he added vivid green food coloring to the cake mix
and to the glaze. So utterly unappealing, but so
thoughtful!
He presented it to me with a green candle atop, and said, “it’s not
pretty but neither am I and you like me.” He won that night!
He was a Connecticut Yankee, WASP through and through, no
nonsense, no frills, plain talk and plain food. I remember once I made
him a French soup for his birthday (in August as you might suspect).
He was reluctant to try something new and “foreign”, but his manners
prevailed.
“This soup is cold” he complained, but, happily, he loved the
Vichyssoise and it became “his” dish. Whenever he had a yen, he would
hint at how good it had tasted, never asking outright, of course. And, of
course, I would always make it for him.
My birthday is coming up this month and in
memory of an old friend, I’ve decided to make
“his” dish. If you make it, I hope you enjoy it as
much as August did, and perhaps raise a glass in
his honor.
Vichyssoise (serves 6 to 8): In heavy 6 quart
pot, simmer 4 cups peeled, coarsely chopped
potatoes, 3 cups thinly sliced leeks, white part plus
2” of green, 2 quarts chicken stock and salt for 50
minutes or until tender. Cool.
Use an immersion blender, until you form
a thick puree. Season and stir in 1-1/2 cups
heavy cream. Use immersion blender again to
thoroughly mix. Chill until very cold. Garnish
with fresh chives. Serve with chilled salad, crusty French bread and a
glass of white wine.
Haircut Blues
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
Prior to my recent haircut, I decided to do a bit
of research before venturing out to see what
the latest suggestions are for older men. I have
to say I was amazed how the web can have such an abundance of
suggestions about something so scarce as senior male hair.
Here’s a sample of a brilliant insight put forth by a so-called expert
on senior style: “Deciding which type of haircut is right for you can be
one of the biggest challenges senior men face. A hairstyle that worked
30 years ago may no longer look as good as it once did.”
I’ve got news, buddy. When it comes to senior men, nothing works
or looks as good as it did 30 years ago!
Another topic listed on a senior website is “How to Care for Mature
Hair.” Mature hair? If that’s what this little grey sprig is on top of my
head then I’ll take back my immature hair right this minute!
Then this title caught my attention: “Trends in Baby Boomer
Hairstyles.” Well, it’s heartening to know that it’s still possible at my
age to be trendy at something besides modeling the latest innovations
in hearing aids.
One site really got carried away with its declaration “Finding the
right haircuts for seniors can make you feel like a million bucks.” Uh,
no, not when everything below my hair makes me feel like two cents.
A caption on a final site advises “Thinning hair, bald spots, and
graying are all things senior men need to take into account when
getting a haircut.” For me, personally, I’d say all of those are relevant,
plus making sure my hair appointment does not conflict with naptime.
When I give the hair stylist directions on how I want my hair cut,
and she nods, I’m pretty sure that as I rattle off specific styles such as
blocked hairline, tapered hairline, layered, spiked, or high and tight,
what she actually hears is “The usual old guy haircut.”
The reason I think that is, no matter what I tell her to do, I always
end up looking like a dweeb, and I have to blame someone else—it
can’t be my fault!
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Since this is an election year, I thought I’d step
away from my normal focus on Positive Aging
and write about something that relates to any
American of voting age. And so, I ask: Can you pass the U.S. citizenship
test?
Do you remember what you learned in Civics class? Do you know
how government works and what the branches of government are?
I was surprised by what I don’t know about what I should know. I felt
a bit embarrassed both by my arrogance in assuming I knew and my
shock at not knowing. Am I qualified to be a U.S. citizen? UGH!
With elections approaching, it’s a good time to remember what we
learned in civics class, which in my opinion schools need to bring back.
Should we have to take a citizenship test before we’re allowed to vote?
Can you answer these questions? I couldn’t answer most
of these and many others.
1. What is the supreme law of the land?
2. How many voting members make up the House of Representatives?
3. Does the Pledge of Allegiance show loyalty to the United States or
the flag?
4. When was the Constitution written?
5. Can you name the original 13 states?
6. Who was President during World War I?
7. How many amendments does the Constitution have?
8. Name one of the two longest rivers in the United States?
9. What’s the name of the national anthem?
10. Do you know who your council person and state senator are?
Remember, learning and relearning are keys to Positive Aging! Check
out the citizenship test for yourself.
Help Me Grandma!
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
When it comes to scammers, nothing is sacred – including
the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. It’s
the “Grandparent Scam.” In these scams, scammers pose as
panicked, desperate grandchildren.
It starts with a call from the scammer pretending to be your
grandchild. They’ll tell you they’re in trouble and they need money
for some emergency.
And they beg you to keep it secret – due to a court “gag order”
or perhaps they don’t want their parents (your children) to know.
For further “proof” they might put another scammer on the
line who pretends to be a lawyer
needing the money to represent the
grandchild in court.
And to add insult to injury (and
this is where it gets scary) instead of
buying gift cards, or wiring money,
the scammers advise that someone
will come to your house to pick up
the cash.
You know the rest: once you turn
over the money, you’ve screwed.
How can you avoid grandparent
scams ? It really is simple. Take a
moment to think.
If someone calls claiming to be your grandchild desperate for
money:
1. Resist the urge to act immediately – no matter how
dramatic the story is. If it is legit, a few hours or a day-or-so won’t
make a difference.
2. Verify the caller’s identity. Ask questions to the caller that a
stranger couldn’t possibly answer. Check the story out with someone
else in your family even if the caller tells you not to contact anybody.
3. If the person wants you to send payment via gift
card, or money transfer – it’s a scam. Come on - You ever hear
of any legitimate agency or organization willing to be paid by an
Amazon Gift Card?
So, what should you do when you get that telephone call? The
answer is easy: Hang up the phone, hang up the phone
and… HANG UP THE PHONE!
One more thing: Check your social media privacy settings
and limit what you share
publicly. Even if your settings
No Grandma, it’s a scam.
are on private, be careful
I’m not in a Mexican jail!
what personal identifiers you
place on Facebook.
It’s not just Aunt Alice that
will admire your pictures
and postings. Sometimes it’s
the bad guys.

Is Your Inheritance Properly Protected?
(And What About Your Children’s Inheritance?)
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
The older generation today is about to transfer
the greatest concentration of wealth in the
history of mankind. The question is: Have you properly planned your
estate?
If not, the resulting impact on your life and your heirs may be
devastating.
“But I already have a Living Trust. Isn’t that enough?”
Many people have chosen to set up a Living Trust (and rightly so)
because the Living Trust is the preferred estate plan vehicle for most
homeowners.
The problem is that all Living Trust estate plans are not created (or
maintained) equally!
We know this because our law firm regularly reviews hundreds of
Living Trusts drawn by others and we’ve found that many contain
glaring defects. Like parachutes when the time comes to pull the cord,
it needs to work perfectly.
Even when we find that Trusts were initially drawn properly, many
have been poorly maintained.
A poorly drafted or maintained Living Trust may cause
you and your family needless suffering and unnecessary
court fees, attorneys’ fees, taxes and nursing care bills!
Worse yet, your family’s inheritance may not be properly protected
from some third party grabbing it - a spouse in a divorce, a lawsuit, a
creditor, the IRS or other predators! What if someone needs memory
care or skilled nursing?
Now is the time to properly plan ahead for you, your
children and other loved ones.
Don’t wait until your Trust vehicle is most needed – like when you
becomes ill, disabled or pass. It may be too late to fix!
Whether your estate is $250,000 or $2,500,000 (or more) we invite
you to attend an eye-opening and thought-provoking estate planning
seminar. Gain the knowledge that you need to make informed and
intelligent decisions.
Then, take advantage of a discounted consultation with one of our
attorneys to review your existing Living Trust or to discuss how a new
Trust plan may be custom designed so it will work right!
Isn’t it worth a few hours of your time to make sure you, your spouse,
family and loved ones get the protection you deserve?
By: Jane Dow / Mutterings & Musings
“Oh, Mandy. Well, you came and you gave
without taking.”
My sweet dog Mandy came to me not from
Barry Manilow, but from A Path 4 Paws, a dog rescue in Las Vegas. She
has blessed my life in ways I could not have imagined.
She came with the name Mandy. I thought it was sweet and suited
her, so I kept it. She had a litter mate, Molly, which I also adopted.
Sadly, after four months, the vet discovered an advanced bladder
cancer in Molly, and I had to put her down.
Mandy
has the
confirmation
of a standard
dachshund
with the head
and scent drive
of a beagle.
A dangerous
combination!
We go for sniffs,
not walks.
Four inch
legs with a nose
to the ground
does not make
for tidy little
strolls. Plus,
doxies have ravenous appetites, so anything on the ground (I mean
anything) is in her mouth before I can scream: Stop!
Yes, there have been vet bills because of the stuff/crap she has
ingested.
But that’s all the negatives about her I can muster. She has slept on
my bed from day one. Never moving or bothering me.
The only time she ventures out of her chill demeanor is when we
get ready to take a walk. Excitement hardly describes it. Running in
circles. Whimpering. Licking.
“Hurry, Mommy, I gotta get out and sniff me some sniffs!” I attribute
her affectionate nature to the old man who raised her. His death gave
me my Mandy.
I’ve had other dogs that were not people or dog friendly. Mandy never
met a person she didn’t lick, bestowing them with wet, sloppy kisses.
She is shy around big dogs but sniffs butts with little ones. A typical
day is her wandering from her living room dog bed, to under my bed,
then the quilt in from of the TV, and finally to a doggie bed in my closet.
A true wanderer. Mandy, my bestie four-legged friend.
My final message is: “Don’t Shop. Adopt!”
20
“Oh, Mandy”
Jane taught high school English and theatre for 30 years. She
now spends her time being a Toastmaster, enjoying the endless
entertainment options in our town, attending Pilates classes and
spoiling her rescue, Mandy.
The Boys in the Boat
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
The Race is on! “The Boys in the Boat” is
a two hour biographical 2023 American sports
drama filmed and directed by George Clooney
from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. The movie is based on the 2013
book of the same name written by Daniel James Brown.
During the height of the Great Depression, members of the rowing
team at the University of Washington were placed in the spotlight as
they competed for Gold at the 1936 Olympics, held in Hitler’s Berlin.
The film highlights their journey in the Olympics. Callum Turner
was featured as Joe Rantz, top rower and Joel Edgerton as coach Al
Ulbrickson Sr.
The World Premiere for this film was held in Los Angeles last
December. It grossed $41 million and received mixed reviews from
critics.
The non-fiction novel describes the University of Washington’s crew
representing the United States in the men’s eight at the Olympics. There
was an entire section devoted to the boat builder, George Pocock, and
the working class athlete who involved himself with the builder in
completing the racing boat.
This student’s family had effectively abandoned and left him to fend
for himself at a very young age. He and Pocock worked well together
making the racing boat glisten and gleam when the boat was finished.
Grant Heslov as co-producer assisted in choosing the additional cast
of Peter Guinness, Sam Strike and Jack Mulhern and others.
This film was an inspirational true story with heart and solid
craftmanship, but George Clooney, with his traditional approach,
prevents it from leaving much of an impact. It’s a bit old-fashion,
relaxing and predictable, and a “feel good” movie. It’s a perfect rainy
day movie.
I love true stories and I give “The Boys in the Boat” a 4 on my 5 point
movie scale.
How to Hydrate Like a Boss
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Do you ever feel like a wilted plant on a
scorching day, desperately in need of some
H2O love? Yeah,
we’ve all been there. But fear not, my
parched pals, I’m about to serve up
some juicy tips on how to hydrate like
a boss.
First up, let’s talk water. But not
just any water – cool, refreshing, lifegiving
water. This crystal-clear nectar
is the MVP of hydration.
Aim to sip on it throughout the day,
not just when you’re as dry as a desert.
A good rule of thumb is to listen to
your body.
Thirsty? Drink. Not thirsty? Have a little sip anyway.
Infused water! Pop some slices of cucumber, lemon, or heck, even a
sprig of mint in there, and you’ve got yourself a spa in a cup.
Now, let’s talk food. Yes, you heard me – eat your water. Chow down
on water-rich fruits and veggies like watermelon, cucumber, oranges,
and spinach. It’s like a stealth mission for hydration – sneaky but
effective.
If you’re sweating up a storm, working out like you’re trying to outdo
Hercules himself, you gotta top up those electrolytes. Coconut water or
self-made sports drinks (water with a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt)
can be your best buddies. They’re like a pit stop for athletes, keeping
your engine running smooth.
Mix up your favorite fruits with some
ice or coconut water for a tasty treat. It
also ticks off those hydration boxes.
For my caffeine fiends, good news
– your coffee and tea do count. Just
remember, balance is key. Don’t chug
espresso like it’s your job and expect to
stay hydrated.
So, there you have it, folks. Hydration
doesn’t have to be a chore. Spruce it
up, mix it up, and keep that glorious
H2O flowing.
Keep these tips in your back pocket, and you’ll be the most hydrated
kid on the block. Drink on, my friends!
Carbon Capture Fantasy?
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
day doesn’t go by when you don’t read or hear
A about alleged “climate change” and the evils
of the carbon footprint it produces. Fact is, the
planet cannot exist without a carbon footprint i.e.
carbon dioxide.
In fact if you really want to get technical, the human body is
fundamentally a “carbon unit” to coin an old Star Trek phrase. So,
what’s the problem?
The cliche “Too much of anything is a bad thing” seems applicable.
There are an estimated 300 million internal combustion and diesel
powered vehicles operating on American roads.
Each produces a significant amount of air polluting chemicals
such as benzene and carbon monoxide to name but a few. When you
couple that with a total estimated worldwide number of 1.4 billion
vehicles, then the sheer volume of deadly air pollutants excreted into
the atmosphere every day is exponentially averse!
People are aware of governmental edicts mandating the widespread
deployment of “cleaner” fuel burning vehicles such as electric powered
cars and trucks. This purportedly would help mitigate the carbon
problem.
But few are aware of another type of carbon reduction technology –
Carbon Capture. It is essentially an extremely elaborate air vacuum
cleaner!
This “appliance” that literally sucks the bad carbon out of the air
resembles a common sound system used at high decibel rock concerts.
The proprietary technology receives the “bad carbon” and stores it
at an estimated depth of 8,000 feet underground where is remains
essentially inert.
At that depth the CO2 is trapped in an inescapable bed rock “prison.”
This cutting edge and revolutionary technology is in the early stages of
widespread use.
Cost, of course, is a main concern. It is estimated to be on the same
level of EV production facilities - hundreds of millions of dollars per
site application.
If and that’s a big if the technology does as is designed to do, it truly
would be a game changer and we will all benefit!
Bathroom Hazards
By: Heather Latimer / Heather’s Self-Help Tips
The bathroom is a dangerous place! According
to the Center for Disease Control more
deaths and injuries happen there than anywhere
else in the house.
A common mishap occurs because racks for holding lightweight
towels are mistaken for grab bars designed to support your weight. Grab
bars are shaped like a tube, usually 5” around, and 18” long.
If you do not have them already, buy them now. And never use grab
bars with suction cups.
Clutching a sliding glass door to gain support as you step in and out
of the shower is a cause of fatalities according to Safety Circus Report.
They suggest replacing with a shower curtain.
Changing position in the shower or standing up in the bathtub can
be disastrous. First check where the soap is because it often falls in the
water.
If it is difficult to obtain a firm grip on the edge of the bathtub when
trying to get out, drape a damp towel over the edge of the tub and you’ll
find it easier to hold onto.
Physical Therapist Don Howard says “Wherever water, soap and bare
skin are combined in any situation there’s risk of injury. Any floor can
become slippery when wet. A residue of soap can be present somewhere,
especially on the soles of your feet.”
Bringing the Dealership
to You
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Life is easy now. If you want dinner, place your
order on your food delivery app and a full
meal arrives in under an hour.
Need something from a store? Amazon will have it on your doorstep
overnight.
But when it comes to vehicle service, many of us are still doing it the
old way — driving to the dealer, dropping off the vehicle, or sitting and
waiting for it to be done so we can get on with our day.
Today there are a few ways we can stay at home and still get our
vehicles serviced. First is pickup and delivery, offered by some luxury
automotive brands.
For example, Lincoln makes it easy when you request service. They
will send a concierge to your home or business to pick up your ride,
drop off a courtesy vehicle for you to use, and then bring your vehicle
back, usually the same day.
26
March 2024
No fuss, no muss. Genesis, Mercedes-Benz and others do this as well.
Another option is mobile service. This is where the service department
comes to you! Mobile service has been around only a short while. It
started with third-party companies like Amazon, and not from the
manufacturers.
It became really popular during COVID, when no one wanted to go
out in the world. Today, mobile service requests have doubled since it
was introduced.
Ford, Lincoln, and others will bring the dealership to your home
via a large van or smaller SUV, depending on service needs. They can
perform most maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, tune
ups, software updates and more. Plus, you can use reward points to pay
for it with your Ford and Lincoln accounts.
Mobile Service may cost a bit more than regular service, but for those
who don’t want to drive to the dealership because of distance, are ill, or
just have to stay home, it’s worthwhile.
Keep in mind not every dealer offers this, and dealerships set their
own prices for the service, but you are getting a trained technician who
knows your vehicle and how to fix it.
UFO of God
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
In 2007, while fishing with co-workers and his
son on the banks of the Cape Fear River Chris
Bledsoe, a deeply religious family man, walked
away from the group. On the verge of fiscal and physical disaster, he
cried out to God in a desperate plea for help when a UFO appeared,
saved his life, and cured his
debilitating chronic disease.
Four hours later, he found
his group dismayed, terrified,
and running for their lives with
several UFOs chasing them
home.
The book “UFO of God” 2023
(soon to be a movie) “is a true
story of hope, love, lies, and
deception, involving the CIA,
NASA, and a string of professors,” Jim Semivan, former CIA, Clandestine
Directorate of Operations, warns, “This humble and truthful man’s
account might change your perspective of all you think you know.”
UFOs have been appearing throughout history, yet there is no
science to explain this phenomenon, place it into context, or have the
understanding of their philosophy to decipher it. It is simply unknown.
Semivan explained, “Worldwide, governments, scientists, and
academics are not displaying the courage and fortitude needed to
accept that this phenomenon is a clear and unalterable part of our
reality.”
This narrative of Bledsoe’s unforeseen spiritual awakening with
the “Lady” is fantastical and complex. “It will raise the bar for UFO
interactions and demonstrate the interrelationships between various
phenomena,” claims Rob Freeman, USG Researcher and UFO World
Explorer.
“Visiting the site of the initial encounter, Chris turned to me and
said, ‘Oh, I think they’re here.’ Within a few seconds a UFO appeared
directly above and zipped off.”
David Russell, Ph.D. and
Distinguished Professor, UNC
says, “The moment that changed
my life’s course was while sitting
with Chris in his living room,
he interrupted our conversation
and said, “They’re here!” I ran
outside to find a UFO directly
above his house, followed by two
more.”
There are many more witnesses
and people that experienced spontaneous healing of debilitating
diseases and other phenomena that’s been documented. 15 years later,
the phenomena still visits the Bledsoe family and affects the lives of
people who come in contact with them.
By: Bruce Ewing / Having Faith
This season is an important time for many
faiths.
March 10th marks the beginning of Ramadan,
when Muslims worldwide fast, pray and reflect. The Christian Faith is
currently in the season of Lent — 40 days leading to Holy Week &
Easter, remembering Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert.
Although it is not currently common practice for Christians to fast,
it is a time to reflect, pray and grow in loving ways. Holy Thursday,
just before Easter, is remembering the Jewish Passover meal that Jesus
shared with his friends on the night that he was later betrayed and
imprisoned.
Passover, which falls in April this year, celebrates the biblical story
of the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt. The history is shared at
the Passover table, as well as the reviewing of questions important to
the faith.
These three religious
holidays have a lot in
common. We all take time to
remember, to reflect, to pray
and learn.
“What are you giving up
for Lent?” was a common
question among my friends
when I was younger. The idea
was to deprive yourself of
something and to learn from
the deprivation.
That never made sense to
me. As a Jesus-follower I find
it more important to reflect on
questions of life through the lens of love.
As I approach this season, the current state of our world, our country,
and our community weigh heavily on my heart. What bothers me most
right now is not only the rising tensions politically, but more so, the
fueled hatred based on bigotry.
My heart is heavy as I see excessive hateful talk and actions directed
toward African Americans, Jews, Asians and women. It is all so sad,
unnecessary and against the basic tenets of humanity!
It is so against the law of LOVE!
Each day during Lent, I will spend time reflecting on this. Why is
there such a resurgence of this kind of hatred?
How can I look for loving ways to push against the hate, and to
personally do better each day? I invite you to join me. I’ll write more
about what I learned next month.
Spring Clean Your Sex Life
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
As the temperature starts to climb this time of
year, so does our libido. What better time to
spring clean your sex life?
In the bedroom, open the windows, rip off the sheets, and make some
sexy changes to your sanctuary surroundings. Create a sex nook in
the corner of the room and fill the space with luxurious throws, erotic
literature, and titillating toys. .
“Novelty is not essential, but every now and then it gives us a new
zest,” says sex therapist and hypnotherapist Dr Janet Hall.
You can also refresh your bedroom with romantic items like black
silky satin sheets and soft swaying curtains. Candles are always ideal to
cast softer lighting and throw flowing shadows across your body.
Blooming plants and flowers can also help your sensuality take root.
“It’s been proven that plants can do everything from reduce stress and
improve your mood to absorb toxins and even reduce noise levels (if
you know what I mean),” Shellie R. Warren, PCC told xonecole.com.
“So, why not put a snake plant on your nightstands or place an
English ivy or Gardenia in a corner of the room? It can bring peace to
your boudoir and make it feel so warm and comfy that you’ll want to
cuddle up with your partner - and then some.”
“Dusters aren’t just for spring cleaning,” JoDivine.com’s Megan
Barnett asserts. “Tease your partner with flirtatious feathers, such as
the Sex & Mischief Feather Tickler. Fluttering the feathered tip across
your partner’s sensitive skin will drive them wild, sending new pleasure
sensations right to their core.”
Spring is also a time to find a signature “sex scent.” Search for new
perfumes or essential oils with notes of tangerine, jasmine, lavender, or
rose. Spray or dab them across your chest, stomach and pelvis and let
your partner follow their nose.
Last, create a sex shelf in your refrigerator and stock it with proven
aphrodisiacs such as fat figs, pomegranates, oysters, spicy chili peppers,
and chilled strawberries. Cool whipped cream, sweet honey and iced
chocolate frosting are the perfect condiments to cool hot bodies on a
warm spring night.
Let the Spring come!
Lauren Tallman is founder of the Erotic Writers Group of Las Vegas
and author of “Harem of the Dragon,” “Come Again?,” and “How
to Have an Affair and Not Get Caught.” Visit her website: laurentallman.com.

The Lighter Side of Senior Sex
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
As we all have read, a sex life should be enjoyed
for as long as you are able. Your endorphins
love it and those connections with someone you
love makes your life that much better.
However, no one
talks about the lack of
coordination when you
are arthritic or the lack
of strength in your knees
when required. Kissing
and stretching to reach
special places creates new
challenges too.
Suddenly, in the middle
of it all, you hear an
“ouch” or a groan and
push on anyway so as
not to ruin the moment
for your partner. Thank
goodness the lights are
dim and no one can see your face all scrunched up.
Body shaming is a thing of the past, no need to worry about that now.
The changes that happened over the years lead to directing each other
to new places that gravity hit. Things are squishier and flop differently.
Sooner or later you’ll have the discussion about what positions
actually work. Scissors may be the “go to” and animal poses don’t do
it anymore. You are permitted animal noises although the first order of
business is to determine if your body will agree to bend.
Talking about it starts
off seriously and usually
evolves into hysterical
laughter. There is no way
to be offended because
there’s no one to blame.
Whatever you did or
experimented with at
20 or 30 is not going to
happen no matter how
much ibuprofen you take.
We never explain
anything to the kids who
are now in their 40’s and
50’s because they cringe
at the thought. You will
forever hold the secret of senior gymnastics private.
Sex can be full-on, full-speed ahead or it can be a cuddle fest. It doesn’t
much matter anymore. We’ve earned the right to be uncoordinated.
Alexa can give you all the mood music you could ever want and a
drink can mellow and relax you, so setting your expectations on just
plain enjoying yourselves, and the intimacy of being together, can turn
the moment into a party.
Andrea brings a unique perspective on our tilted look at senior
life.
The Influence of MAGIC
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
Paris Fashion Week is the hottest ticket in town
if you’re into Fashion. Even if you’re not
into fashion we still need everyday clothing and
jackets to stay warm.
But without the fabulous designers creating new looks for every
season, there wouldn’t be a wonderful show held right in our own
backyard of Las Vegas, called the MAGIC show. More about that later.
Believe it or not, fashion can be dated back to ancient Rome and
Egypt. I learned that a toga was a symbol of Roman citizenship.
Traveling to Italy lately, I can assure you that I’ve not seen any togas
on people - unless they were a statue.
Living the Jetsons’ Life
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
For many of us born in the ‘50s, the idea of
robots was a fun fantasy.
As children we were introduced to robots with
a cartoon called the Jetsons, a family living and
working in space. The Jetsons had a maid named Rosie. She was a
robot performing daily chores.
Fast forward to 2024 and robots doing daily chores is no longer a
fantasy but a reality.
The technology for beauty robots is here. Perhaps not quite perfect,
you can have your nails painted by a robot right here in Las Vegas!
A company called Clockwork (LikeClockwork.com) has a robot that
paints your nails in 10 minutes for $10.00. While they only have about
8 locations nationwide, one of their locations is in Terminal 1 near
gate B15 at Harry Reid airport.
Often I am asked why is fashion important at all? Because it’s a
visual marker of how far human evolution has come.
What used to be considered a necessary tool in our lives has now
become a way for self-expression, identity and ways of showing changes
in social norms. Many important designers came out of the 1950s, -
Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy and many more.
As each decade has made some impact into fashion, the styles have
changed with the times. I’m pretty certain that King Louis XIV, who
paid large sums of money for the finest of fashions, would be mortified
with the 2000s and beyond as anything goes, with no fashion rules or
guidelines.
As a devoted fashion follower and stylist, I am fortunate to attend
the MAGIC trade show every August and February. At one time MAGIC
March 2024
This is an express paint and go, so don’t expect a massage or cuticle
cleanup. But if you are on the run and need a quick polish, this robot
is for you.
Robots are no longer a fantasy and I suspect things will evolve even
further in a few short years. While technology is exciting, I’m an old
fashion kind of girl.
I enjoy chatting with people. When given the option, I never use selfcheckout,
I like interacting with the checkout people.
I’m old enough to remember when there was a person to fill your
car with gas, check your oil and wash your windshield. I miss those
days. For future generations, I suspect many of the services we have
today may be lost.
By the way, I didn’t go looking for robots that could do beauty
functions for this article. I was sent the links by my 13-year-old
granddaughter who was excited to share this info.
For my granddaughter’s generation, robots doing daily functions
and using AI will just be the norm. They may never know the fun of
random chit-chat at your local store or salon.
That makes me sad, but we all adjust. Next time I’m in Terminal 1 at
the airport, I might just have to try the nail painting robot.
Why You Should Get Help For Your Mental Health
By: Stan Popovich / Your Mental Health
Many people underestimate the impact that
mental illness can have on an individual or
family.
Her are six reasons why you
should make your mental
health an important priority
in your life.
1. Your situation will
improve if you get help:
Your anxieties and fears can
be challenging to manage
and more than likely you will
need some help. Just as you
talk to your doctor about your
regular health, you should not
be hesitant in seeking help for
your mental health.
2. Drugs and alcohol
are not the answer: Drugs
and alcohol can make your
problems more complicated. Many people have said that drugs and
alcohol will only add more problems to your situation.
3. You will save time and money: Eventually, you will have to
confront your fears and mental health issues. Save yourself the time
and heartache and confront your problems now rather than later.
4. You are not alone: Everyone deals with fear, stress, and anxiety
in one’s life, whether your friends and others care to admit it. In
addition, do not be embarrassed that you are getting help.
We all learn new things from others on a daily basis and learning
how to manage your anxieties
is no different.
5. Do not make the
mistake of doing nothing:
There are many people who
struggled with anxiety and
other mental health related
issues, and they tried to ignore
their problems. As a result,
some of these people struggled
on a daily basis and eventually
things became more difficult.
6. You have a variety
of options: There are many
mental health support groups,
organizations, and counselors
in your area that can help get
your life back on track. Talk to
your doctor to get more details on where you can go for some assistance.
Yes, I truly love the warmer
Springtime is a great time to
be thankful for each day and try to
learn a new word each day. I’m one
I also plan on learning new recipes. I love to watch the Food Network
The Grandma’s Guide to Gorgeous
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
It has come to my attention that my fashion
image is in serious need of a makeover.
My entire wardrobe, which I believed to be
tasteful and age-appropriate, is, in fact, quite boring. And boring is not
the look for which I was striving.
This epiphany dawned on me via a newspaper article featuring
women ranging in age from 60 to 94. Their
unique sense of style has made them internet
stars, thereby anointing them as the fashion
influencers for the Medicare set.
All the women in said article, when not
rummaging in consignment shops for gently
used Comme des Garcons, or Goodwill racks
for someone’s granddaughter’s frayed jeans, are
also bloggers. Well, I blog too! So, what’s keeping
me from becoming a geriatric sensation?
Tempted, but timid, I launched an inquiry
into what made these women notable. I needed
fashion confidence to become an Instagram
icon. After reading the blogs and scrutinizing
the photos, I’ve figured it out.
Below is my “Baker’s Dozen” list for transforming into an audacious,
subversive, riveting, cool, and attention-grabbing granny!
1. Abandon basic blacks, whites, and grays. Replace them with wild,
colorful prints and things that don’t match.
2. Forego modesty and display body parts which you have hidden
for decades.
3. Gray hair is acceptable if cut very short. Cropped bangs and shaved
sides are uber cool. Wear it long and let it go completely wild or pile
it like a bird’s nest atop the head. Purple streaks get you bonus points.
4. Forget demure earrings; purchase hoops -- the bigger the better.
If you can find a pair that looks like it could double as a parakeet
perch, you’re solid. For a change of pace, switch to a long, dangling
chandelier style. Extra points for a pair that appears it was plucked
You Think?
your face? Please tell us by
thoughts or suggestions
to Publisher Dan at: dan@
thevegasvoice.net.
from Carmen Miranda’s hat.
5. Wear plenty of wide bracelets. On both wrists. If the bracelets weigh
enough, they’re also useful for bicep curls.
6. Consider multiple necklaces and make sure they’re really chunky.
They also serve to ward off unwanted hugs.
7. Acquire a hat collection. The sillier the better. Turbans and
baseball caps also are acceptable.
8. Even if your vision is perfect, one or two pairs
of eyeglasses the size of Mack truck headlights
are a must. Black frames are best, but bright red
with matching lipstick is also a head-turner.
9. Accessorize plain street clothes with color.
A pair of elbow length gloves in fuchsia will do
the trick.
10. No naked fingers! Flaunt multiple rings
with large stones. They’re also a handy weapon
in case of a mugging. Blood red nail polish puts
the otherwise ordinary hand over the top!
11. Sport torn denim and tee shirts with
messages. A white tee with “Be A Slut” written
in chartreuse cursive script is a guaranteed eyecatcher.
12. Top off your mismatched outfit with an
oversized cape. Add a mask and it becomes a Zorro disguise for your
next costume ball.
13. Wear an evening gown with high top sneakers.
Transformation from ordinary to extraordinary isn’t easy, but worth
the effort. So, join me at the thrift shop. Why go gentle into that good
night when all it takes is the perfect shocking orange vintage handbag?
Social Media and the Transition
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
When several soon-to-be veterans (those
leaving active duty) were asked what their
greatest fears are in getting out, the two most
prevalent answers were:
1. Getting in a position to enter the civilian
job market and
2. What is the most effective way to use social
media in that challenge.
I suppose these two could go hand-in-hand,
since we are embroiled in the digital age to
the nth degree. Without a doubt, using social
media is the only way to proceed. It cuts a lot
of corners, and can allow a vet to better target
his market point.
It has been rightfully said that veterans
tend to be at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to competing
for employment. Their commitment to service took them out of the
workplace, while their civilian counterparts were spending time
learning how to navigate the complexities of social networking. The
veteran was focused on doing a job to protect our country.
Today, social media is part of our lives. From finding a job to finding
housing to finding new friends, people use social media to proactively
position themselves to attract audiences that they want to find them.
Here’s a couple of tips that I’ve found by, yes, you guessed it…using
the Internet.
Build a civilian “You”: Create a “brand” of who you are, and
how you want people to perceive you…especially anyone that may
want to hire you. Personal branding is critical
for veterans.
Military culture does not support
individualism, so it puts you at a disadvantage
when needing to broadcast your value to target
employers. Generally, recruiters are using three
platforms: LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
So, as you build your profiles online, make
sure you have a presence on these platforms
and consider how you want to be perceived by
the employers you will target.
Be Findable: Many recruiters use technology—like Monster to
search across all social media profiles to find candidates. Using the
right keywords on your profile help employers find you.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.
The U.S. Census
By: Craig Smith / Exploring Your Roots
The U.S. Census can be a valuable resource
for genealogy research, providing a wealth of
information about individuals and families over
time. Here are some steps to effectively use the
U.S. Census for genealogy research:
Start with the Latest Census: Begin with the most recent
available census data and work backward in time. The latest available
census is typically released every 10 years, but the most recent data
might not be immediately accessible due to privacy restrictions. Note
that the most recent available census is 1950.
Identify Ancestors: Start with what you know about your
ancestors and work to identify them in the census records. Look for
names, birthplaces, ages, and other relevant details.
Use Census Indexes: Utilize online census indexes and databases
to make your search more efficient. Websites like Ancestry.com,
FamilySearch.org, and Heritage Quest Online provide searchable
databases of census records.
Understand Census Columns: Familiarize yourself with the
various columns and information recorded in each census year. This
may include names, ages, birthplaces, occupations, marital status, and
relationships within the household.
Take Note of Neighbors: Pay attention to the neighbors listed on
the census page. Relatives often lived in close proximity to one another,
so exploring the households nearby may reveal additional family
members.
Stay Flexible with Spelling and Dates: Be flexible with name
spellings and birthdates. Census enumerators might have recorded
information phonetically, and individuals may not have accurately
reported their ages.
Remember that genealogy research can be a gradual process, and
patience is key.
In Sedona’s azure sky brightness sits the chapel
Arizonans. It was voted one of the state’s Seven
Man-Made Wonders. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is built against a
backdrop of red rocks and is Sedona’s most recognized and beloved
attraction.
To reach the chapel, we traveled around a series of wide, swooping
turns that followed a sculpted cliff line overlooking Sedona. The
beautifully designed Chapel of the Holy Cross is distinctively built high
into Sedona’s rocky cliffs and seen for miles.
It was contracted by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig
Staude, who in 1932 was inspired to build the church after seeing
the construction of the Empire State Building. Before World War
proposal was to
build a church
in Budapest,
Hungary.
The changed
proposal was to
then build the
church in her
native Arizona. It
took the assistance
of the late Senator
Barry Goldwater to
obtain a specialuse
permit to
build the chapel on Coconino National Forest land - a location chosen
for its beauty and picturesque view where the grandeur of immense
space lifts spirits.
Without the use of dynamite, twenty-five tons of rock was relocated. It
took 18-months to complete the chapel in 1956, at a cost of $300,000.00.
The following year, the American Institute of Architects gave the chapel
its Award of Honor.
As the sculptor said, “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art, the
Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and
all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all
men and be a living reality.”
The artsy tourist town of Sedona is clean and well-kept with plenty
of overhead sky with an attractive main drag lined with storefronts
housing interesting boutiques and gifts shops. Around Easter, tourists
When Your Knees Hurt
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
As many individuals get older, their knees begin
to hurt. While there are many causes for knee
pain, one of the most common is a problem with
the meniscus.
Situated between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibial (leg bone)
is a tough cartilaginous piece of tissue known as a meniscus. The
meniscus is seen and having two parts - a lateral or outside portion
and a medial or inside portion.
The purpose of the meniscus is to serve as a shock absorber between
the femur and tibia. For example, if you were to jump up and down and
you did not have a meniscus, the femur and tibia would slam into one
another causing damage to one or both.
The meniscus, like many parts of the body, undergoes a lot of wear
and tear through the continual use of the knees and legs. The wear
and tear on the meniscus can be further exacerbated by injury.
The most common injury is a shearing effect on the meniscus.
This happens when a person turns their body while keeping their foot
planted. During this process, the femur rotates while the tibia stays
stationary - compressing and shearing the meniscus.
Can the meniscus repair itself? The answer is it depends on where the
injury occurred and how extensive it is.
Approximately one third of the tissue that makes up the meniscus
has a direct blood supply. The other two thirds does not have a direct
blood supply.
This is important because tissue which is avascular (without a direct
blood supply) takes much longer to heal or may not heal at all.
If the injury is in the vascular area and it is not too extensive, there
is a possibility it will heal on its own. If it is in the avascular or it is too
extensive, surgery it usually required.
This surgery may be simpler where the surgeon shaves down the
damaged part of the meniscus or more extensive which many people
call “bone on bone” where the knee needs to be replaced.
It’s Now Growing Season
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
March is the first full month of the 2024
growing season.
Before starting your gardening, make certain
that you have properly applied any soil additives and fertilizer, reprogrammed
your irrigation, and removed any left-over winter
related damage. Once completed, it is time to plan
your “landscape strategy.”
When planning new additions or upgrades, it is
important to understand various factors that may
affect your Las Vegas landscape.
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone for our
community is 9b (30F-90F). Combine this with the intensity of the
summer sun, strong winds, and low humidity, you must give thought
to what and where to plant.
Partial sun exposure means less than 4 hours per day while full sun
means 6+ hours. You must keep in mind that the most intense and
damaging sun exposure occurs between 2-4pm.
Read the planting instructions to ascertain each plant’s
appropriateness. Just because a garden center sells a particular plant
(such as hibiscus, purple plum or magnolias), it does NOT mean it
will actually survive!
Names of plants can also be confusing! Sago palms are NOT palms
(and do NOT like intense sunlight), Red Yucca are not yuccas, and
Mexican Bird of Paradise will flourish in our gardens but Tropical
Bird of Paradise will die!
No palm tree is indigenous to Nevada and none are drought tolerant.
The Mediterranean Fan Palm will do well here but the Queen Palm
will be severely damaged by freezing temperatures or direct intense
sunlight.
Make certain what your HOA permits before purchasing. Do NOT
plant cactus, yucca or agave near pedestrian
walkways where people or pets can get hurt. Do NOT
plant “messy” trees such as African Sumac, Mesquite
or Pepper Trees near pools or near entrances since
they are constantly dropping foliage.
When planting fruits, vegetables or flowers, make
certain they receive appropriate amounts of sunshine. All fruits and
vegetables need 6+ hours while gardenias need only 2 hours.
Choose your locations carefully! Look around and you’ll see palms
growing above roof tops and Cypress Trees penetrating the eaves of
houses! Poor locations!
Remember: Plan Before You Plant!
Fantastic Long Cruises
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
The longest cruise I’ve ever taken was twelve
nights. They were in Europe and I was able
to see many ports in the Mediterranean, and all
around the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was
fantastic.
The Vegas Voyagers has a 16 night Hawaiian Island cruise coming
up next February 9 – 25, 2025. And it is likely Sharon and I will escort
this group. Sixteen nights is a long time to be away especially since we
are still actively working on Vegas Voyager trips and tours.
It does seem, however, that many of our Vegas Voyagers like the
longer cruises. We have close to 20 “Voyagers” getting ready for a 32
night South Pacific cruise in April.
Readers like these cruises
because they can settle in to
the
daily
routines of cruise
life. They can
unpack suitcases
just once and get comfortable in their stateroom. And over the longer
period, they can get to many destinations.
And this upcoming 32-night cruise is not the longest we planned for
some of our Vegas Voyagers. I remember planning a 44-night cruise
for a “Voyager” couple that started in Galveston, Texas and ended in
Singapore.
This cruise crossed the Atlantic Ocean, sailed into the Mediterranean
Sea, transited the Suez Canal, sailed around India into the Indian
Ocean, cruised through Indonesia and ended in Singapore. Now that’s
a cruise!
Oh, and after this couple finished the cruise, they flew from Singapore
to New Delhi and spent five nights visiting the Taj Mahal. Only then did
they fly home to Las Vegas.
If you have the time and like to cruise, then the longer cruises are
for you. We’ll have more information on a number of longer cruises
in future issues, especially a 16 night Alaska cruise roundtrip from Los
Angeles the end of August 2025.
By: Liz Breier / This & That
You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear,
you’ve got to be taught from year to year,
it’s got to be drummed in your dear little
ear— you’ve got to be carefully taught!
You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are
oddly made, and people whose skin is
a different shade — You’ve got to be
carefully taught.
You’ve got to be taught before it’s too
late, Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate
— You’ve got to be carefully taught!
Growing up, I loved listening to albums
of Broadway shows, and one of my favorites is, South Pacific. Rogers &
Hammerstein wrote the music and lyrics of this classic.
I listened to the album over and over in my bedroom and to this day,
know every word of each song. The lyrics quoted above have always
stayed with me.
Maybe because I was not raised that way. No one in my family ever
referred to anyone with an adjective.
It was more a MLK attitude of character vs. color (or religion or
ethnicity). I preface my article with this because I want to be clear to
Vegas Voice readers that my sadness and outrage at the October 7 attack
in Israel is not just because it was my fellow Jews that were beheaded,
burned, raped, shot and taken hostage.
It is because no one should suffer that treatment. Anyone who would
intentionally and unprovoked attack innocent, unarmed civilians is
barbaric.
War is ugly and mean. Over the centuries, as humankind has
developed more sophisticated ways of hurting each other, from rocks
and sticks to bows and arrows, bayonets, firearms, ovens, gas chambers,
atomic bombs, the ugliness grows more and more atrocious.
In a perfect world, there would be no
war, but sadly that is not reality.
All this said, I also believe in defense. If
someone hits me, I will put up my arms
to defend myself. If they hit me again,
I would strike back with the strongest
measure I have at my disposal - be it fist
or firearm.
I would not, however, sit back and let someone pummel me without
retaliation. If I am being hurt, I will not consider the source, or in any
way temper my response because of who or what that individual may
be.
Certainly, I expect no less from Israel.
Israel’s self-defense may seem harsh to some, but I do not see any
alternative for the lives of the remaining hostages and the citizens of
Israel (which includes many ethnicities, not just Jews) to do what must
be done to secure themselves.
This is especially true because the attackers have stated unequivocally
that they will do it again and again. If anyone chooses to not believe
the atrocities of October 7 and beyond, then I fear they are being less
than honest with themselves and may, unfortunately have succumbed
to “being taught to hate and fear.”
