The Lighter Side of Senior Sex
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
As we all have read, a sex life should be enjoyed
for as long as you are able. Your endorphins
love it and those connections with someone you
love makes your life that much better.
However, no one
talks about the lack of
coordination when you
are arthritic or the lack
of strength in your knees
when required. Kissing
and stretching to reach
special places creates new
challenges too.
Suddenly, in the middle
of it all, you hear an
“ouch” or a groan and
push on anyway so as
not to ruin the moment
for your partner. Thank
goodness the lights are
dim and no one can see your face all scrunched up.
Body shaming is a thing of the past, no need to worry about that now.
The changes that happened over the years lead to directing each other
to new places that gravity hit. Things are squishier and flop differently.
Sooner or later you’ll have the discussion about what positions
actually work. Scissors may be the “go to” and animal poses don’t do
it anymore. You are permitted animal noises although the first order of
business is to determine if your body will agree to bend.
Talking about it starts
off seriously and usually
evolves into hysterical
laughter. There is no way
to be offended because
there’s no one to blame.
Whatever you did or
experimented with at
20 or 30 is not going to
happen no matter how
much ibuprofen you take.
We never explain
anything to the kids who
are now in their 40’s and
50’s because they cringe
at the thought. You will
forever hold the secret of senior gymnastics private.
Sex can be full-on, full-speed ahead or it can be a cuddle fest. It doesn’t
much matter anymore. We’ve earned the right to be uncoordinated.
Alexa can give you all the mood music you could ever want and a
drink can mellow and relax you, so setting your expectations on just
plain enjoying yourselves, and the intimacy of being together, can turn
the moment into a party.
life.
