As we go into the holiday season, we all need a little distraction from the realities of the world these days. My friend Diana looks up everything! She sends me stuff and ideas all the time. Since it’s Thanksgiving and I can’t think of anything about turkeys, here we go: “Over a Barrel” comes from the days before CPR. A drowning victim would be placed over a barrel and rolled back and forth in an effort to empty the lungs of water. It rarely worked so if you are “over a barrel,” you are in deep trouble. “Barge In” refers to freight being moved along on barges along the Mississippi pushed by steamboats. Since they were hard to control, they often would swing into piers or other boats and the expression “barged in” was born. “A Shot of Whiskey” cost the same as a .45 cartridge for a six-gun. So, if a cowboy was low on cash, he would give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink, hence a “shot” of whiskey. “Riff Raff” refers to the travel from north to south on the Mississippi where travel on the riverboats was too expensive so many travelled on rafts. They were considered cheap and everything else had the right of way. The steering oar was called a “riff” and this became “riff-raff” implying low class. The King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache. Walt Disney was afraid of mice! A duck’s quack doesn’t echo. No one knows why.
