Pumpkins Are Everywhere By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness It’s now November and another year coming to a close. And I see pumpkin this…pumpkin that. Am I the only one who is not thrilled for pumpkin in almost everything you see? It’s now in coffee, drinks, cakes, etc. everywhere you turn it’s “pumpkin spice” or some derivative. I even heard on the news there will be garbage bags with a pumpkin scent! WOW! I admit I like pumpkin but not in most of my food! I even tried making a cake with one box of spice cake mix and one can of 100% pure pumpkin. It was just ok - but pretty mushy. I ate a little of it and threw the rest out! I really hate wasting food, but it was not good. Even my veterinarian suggested to put a small spoon of 100% pure pumpkin in my kitties’ wet food to help with their digestion. It worked. BUT I can just imagine my two felines thinking, “Really Mom, PUMPKIN?” I did make some pumpkin muffins with most of the can of pure pumpkin so they didn’t come out as mushy as the cake. I have them frozen and will take them out when I’m hungry for something and have nothing else to eat for dessert. So, for all you pumpkin spice fanatics, good for you. I’m sure you really enjoy it but I’m just in the minority. I will continue having some pumpkin spice in small portions - maybe in a small cake or muffin. But I draw the line for having it in my coffee. I’m one who likes my coffee nice and strong and plain so I can enjoy the richness of the taste. Maybe this fall I’ll attempt to try some other variations of cake mixes with other spices, but I’ve given up on pumpkin spice. Positive attitude and good health to all! You never realize how much you use your shoulder until it is painful and you cannot use it. Shoulder pain has many causes and many people will experience shoulder pain as they get older. Many people experiencing shoulder pain are told that they have a rotator cuff injury. The rotator cuff is made of four muscles – teres minor, supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis. These muscles and their tendons both help the shoulder move and secure the shoulder joint in place. The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body. This mobility, however, also makes it one of the most likely joints to be damaged. A rotator cuff injury is usually due to damage to the tendons of one of the mentioned four muscles. This damage may be minor and will heal by itself over time, or it may be major which requires surgery to reattach the tendon. Another potential cause of pain is bursitis. A bursa is a fluid filled sack that serves as a type of shock absorber between two structures in the musculoskeletal system. It is designed to keep them from damaging each other by repetitive rubbing against each other. 28 Shoulder Pain By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You November 2023 Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa due to excessive wear and tear. Because the joint is continuously used, the bursitis may not resolve on its own and may need acupuncture or an interjection of an antiinflammatory. Arthritis is another common cause of shoulder pain. There are many kinds of arthritis but most forms can be broken down into two types. The first type is due to wear and tear on the shoulder joint which is called osteoarthritis. The second type is due to inflammatory processes damaging the joint which includes rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. In the case of arthritis, intervention focusses on reducing the inflammation and helping the tissues of the joint to heal. Shoulder injuries, as in all injuries to a body part, the longer the injury is allowed to progress, the longer and more difficult it is to treat. If you begin to experience pain in the shoulder, have it evaluated by a medical professional.
